How have you experienced life{together}? The Directors of the various Operations Departments of the church get together each week, with the primary focus being prayer. It is a time for both praise and petition, thanking God for what He is doing at Calvary and presenting the needs for our areas of responsibility as well as for the church as a whole.

Did you know..

Please pray for good health. Also, pray for the others who work in the finance department, we all have our individual responsibilities yet all the work must be coordinated in a timely fashion and with total accuracy. Pray that we will continue to represent Calvary in ways that bring honor and glory to our God.

• We have approximately 40 faithful volunteers who work on

a rotating schedule to count our offerings each week. Some have been doing it 15+ years. • Strange things sometimes end up in the offering plate… chocolate coins, foreign currencies, jewelry, $1,000,000 bills (that are really tracts). • We process approximately 400 online gifts each month. • The Finance Office collectively has over 45 years of service here at Calvary. • The Finance Office was recently baptized (tee hee hee).

After losing both of his legs in a car accident at age 18, Scott Rigsby battled his way back from depression and addiction to achieve the unthinkable—become the first double-leg amputee ever to cross the finish line in the sporting world’s most grueling and prestigious competition, the Ironman Triathlon. Scott has since become an inspiration to hundreds of thousands of physically challenged and able-bodied athletes the world over. Unthinkable documents Scott’s remarkable journey. From the scene of the devastating crash that claimed both legs, and his subsequent battle with depression and alcohol addiction, through his dawning realization that God has a greater plan for his life, readers will be inspired. From his decision to participate in the Ironman competition, to the moment he crossed the finish line, readers will engage with Scott’s unthinkable courage, determination and faith. (Also available on Audio CD) Angel in the Rubble is the story of the miraculous rescue of Genelle GuzmanMcMillan - 9/11’s last survivor. Only thirteen floors to go, and she and her coworkers would be safe. They had begun their tenuous trek down the concrete stairwell of Tower One at the sixty-fourth floor. They were so near their goal. That’s when the building began to sway and the entire tower came crashing down on top of her. In a matter of seconds, she found herself buried alive—entombed in a coffin of concrete and steel. For twenty-three hours she prayed, remembering each detail of her walk away from the faith she’d known as a child. She begged God to forgive her—accepting that she may soon die—but praying for the miracle of life and a chance to live that life with a new purpose and direction God answered her prayer by sending an angel to sustain her until rescue workers arrived. life{together} experiencing community at calvary

the adventure of community - experienced as a family by Paul and Tammy Ledford

Our Community Group meets twice a month--once during the week and once on the weekend. The weekend meeting includes having supper together - what an adventure that is . . . 17 kids and 8 adults! Each time we meet we have a Bible Study for the kids and then one for the adults. This past month we spent time stuffing 700-1,000 eggs for an Easter Egg Hunt outreach for our neighbors and friends. We provided crafts for them to do, sugar cookies to frost and decorate, and then they gathered to hear the Easter Story. We really appreciated the help that our Community Group gave us and we had a lot of fun! We only schedule the meetings out about two months at a time because everyone's schedule changes constantly with kids activities. There are people in our group early in their walk with Christ and some who have a very deep and committed relationship. It has also been nice because two of the families are headed by single Moms who really appreciate the opportunity for their kids to have positive male role models. Our community group is such a blessing and it is apparent that, while the families were assigned to our group by Calvary Church, God certainly had His hand in the mix of choosing the families with their various walks of life, spiritual backgrounds and challenges that they each face! If you would like to join one of our Community Groups or start a new one by being equipped to facilitate a group, please contact Karen VanHolstyn (kvanholstyn@ calvarygr.org) at 956-9377, ext. 5173.

Behind the Scenes

Serving at Calvary with Zoe Carmichael Where do you currently serve at Calvary?

I volunteer for Kingdom Kids, which includes serving in the Lambs room on Sunday mornings, planning and recruiting for CSI, organizing the Bowling Bash and participating in the Children’s Ministry Advisory Council.

zoe carmichael

How did you begin serving at Calvary?

I began serving in the nursery when my twin daughters were fouryears-old. I wanted to give back to the nursery that selflessly watched my children on Sunday mornings. I decided to increase my involvement when one of my daughters was diagnosed with a severe peanut and tree allergy. I decided to check out the snack situation in the rooms at church and did not feel comfortable with the ingredients in a lot of the snacks offered on Sunday morning. Working closely with the Kingdom Kids staff, I helped to clean up the rooms from any potential food allergens, and developed a new snack policy for all of the childcare facilities and events at Calvary Church. As a result of this work I met some wonderful people, saw my niche and my involvement in children’s ministry was ignited!

What challenges have you encountered in your ministry?

As I mentioned, I volunteer in the nursery and for CSI and the Bowling Bash – all of which require a great number of dedicated volunteers to be successful. Gathering volunteers for any program is always a challenge. My hope is that people will see my joy in working with the kids at Calvary and then they will want to get involved. Having enough people is always a challenge but one that is well worth the work.

How has God blessed you through serving?

Get serving

I am a witness to God’s love every time I interact with children or serve alongside other volunteers - an opportunity I happily welcome and cherish. On June 1, 2010, I was diagnosed with Stage II non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Not only did this news stun my family, but for the first time, I was forced to lean upon my Calvary friends in a whole new way. During my treatment and recovery I was on the receiving end of enormous generosity. My family and I received cards and prayers and most of all, more meals than I thought possible! Our refrigerator and freezer were constantly full. Today, it has been 1½ years since my “all clear” report, and I am feeling great! My experiences serving in this ministry have all been tremendous blessings. I look forward to continuing my service and helping wherever God leads me!

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10). Every Sunday and throughout the week, hundreds of people – of diverse interest, background and talents – devote a little bit of themselves to serving in a ministry at Calvary Church. They give a little time or a lot, whatever they can afford. It’s no over-statement to say that they are building up the body of Christ “to the praise of His glory.” Our team members serve in the library, clean the Sanctuary, teach a class, rock a baby, greet people, help staff with special events, sing in the choir and many other things. Whatever your gift, skill or passion is, we need you. Contact Judie Fielstra (jfielstra@calvarygr.org) at ext. 5095 today.

Discovery

The excitement of Discovery is uncovering unknown gifts and treasures. It brings anticipation and greater pleasure to your journey with God and it will impact three unique areas of your life. 1. Discovery provides an opportunity to assess where you are on your faith journey as you meet one-on-one with trained staff. 2. Discover gives opportunities to learn ways to connect with others at Calvary. 3. Discovery provides a way for you to uncover how God has gifted you in a way that will energize you to live out His specific design for you. Some testimonials from people that have gone through the Discovery ministry: “Great meeting! Helped me develop a plan of action and to become focused and move forward.” ~ Jerry “I was very pleased and encouraged by the Discovery meeting. I feel it is very valuable to know where your strengths and growth areas lie and I am glad that Calvary Church (via this meeting) holds you accountable for putting your gifts to good use for God’s glory, to delight Him!” ~ Andrea Make a Discovery today and contact Judie Fielstra (jfielstra@calvarygr.org) at ext. 5095.

As copper prices reach all-time highs, churches are becoming easy targets for scrap metal thieves. One church insurance company reports that almost half of recent theft claims involve copper. Thieves dismantle air conditioner units and strip out the copper pipes and wiring and cash it in at the recycling center. A church in California had been hit by copper thieves two nights in a row, so some innovative church members set a baby monitor on the roof, hooked it up to a computer, and took shifts watching it. Sure enough, six hours into their overnight stakeout, the alleged thieves returned to the scene of the crime, but this time they were caught on camera.

nancial decisions: bills, mortgage payments, college education for the kids, business investments, and our retirement plans. Sometimes when making these life choices, we “lean on our own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).

Giving Into Pressure

Hezekiah decided that the best way to secure his future was to pay off Sennacherib. He cleaned out the royal treasury, and then amazingly he stripped off the gold from the temple doors and doorposts (2 Kings 18:16). He literally robbed God and gave it to his enemy.

We are a lot more sophisticated in our thievery. We rob God by the financial choices we make. Every time you review your budget you make a decision, “Will I give this week?”“How much will I give?”“What else could Unfortunately, the best security systems in the world cannot prevent ev- I do with my money?” Our alternatives seem so logical. One newly enery robbery attempt. The prophet Malachi asks a probing question, “Will gaged couple made the decision not to give until they saved up enough a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ In money for a down payment on their first home. Their choice may seem tithes and offerings” (Malachi 3:8). King Hezekiah started his reign with like a sound financial decision, but is it? several godly choices. He sought the Lord with all of his heart, reestablished temple worship, led the people to obey God’s commands, and as a Never Satisfied result, God prospered him (2 Chronicles 31:21). Just when it looked like Allowing other financial priorities to crowd out your giving is one of things couldn’t get any better, God sent a trial to test Hezekiah’s faith. Satan’s subtle lies. “Hey, don’t get too crazy about this generous giving thing; you never know when you might need the money for something Trials and Temptations more important.” Hezekiah rationalized his decision and sent God’s monSennacherib, the King of Assyria, invaded Israel. So Hezekiah prepared ey to Sennacherib. His problems were solved, right? Not a chance. Senfor war by repairing the walls of Jerusalem, protecting the water supply, nacherib took Hezekiah’s gold and surrounded Jerusalem anyway. That’s and forging weapons and shields. But when Sennacherib captured some the funny thing about not making generous giving a priority. If you wait of Judah’s fortified cities, Hezekiah’s faith faltered and he sent a letter to until you think you can “afford” to give, you will never give. Satan will appease Sennacherib, “Withdraw from me and I will pay whatever you never make it easy for you to be generous. There will always be one more demand of me” (2 Kings 18:14). Instead of trusting God to rescue him, trinket to buy, one more amusement to enjoy, or one more business deal King Hezekiah tried to solve his problems by making a deal with the devil. that keeps you from putting God first in your financial life. Financial pressures have a way of exposing our faith. Trials tempt us to Hezekiah got his priorities mixed up and it caused him a lot of grief. If take our eyes off the Lord and push us to solve problems in our own you are guilty of robbing God, it’s not too late to turn yourself in. To learn strength. pray for our sister city in mozambique Look in the sky ... No, it was not a plane, a bird, or even Superman. It was the village witchdoctor. On one of our first trips into our adopted village of Chinhangane in Mozambique, our worker on site, Sybil Baloyi related how people in the village have seen the power of the local witchdoctor. Yes, they have seen him fly as he dishes out curses. This is not a fairy tale and it does indicate the incredible power of evil that exists in this region. In the past few months Satan has stepped up the attacks on the village and its people. It started with Victor, a new believer whose wife was taken by a

crocodile while bathing. Then the flood came and wiped out the crops. We found out recently that our children’s worker was released because of a major spiritual failure. Someone broke into our buildings and stole a generator, batteries and more. Ernesto, our man on the ground who leads the agriculture association was just in an accident and his femur was shattered. The Pastors are deeply discouraged, hope is running thin. Calvary, we need to pray. We have a team that is just preparing to return from the village and two more heading there in future months. We need to pray for them as they go to encourage, shepherd, bring hope and pray. We know that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies.

Sow Hope I have a good friend who runs a ministry with that title. (She and her husband attend Calvary.) Children’s Ministry – Joel Shank A child experiencing different cultures now wants to be a full-time missionary when she grows up. One hundred forty children know another chapter of the book of James by heart, and can recite the Armor of God in Ephesians without blinking! These testimonies are just a taste of who kids are becoming at Calvary Church. It happens on Sunday mornings, with a focus on Bible story-telling so that kids can see, hear and experience hands-on who God has revealed Himself to be in Scripture. It happens on Wednesday nights when kids learn to put their faith into action. Our Children’s Ministry includes a summer VBS using science experiments to help kids discover that God is the Creator who personally cares about us (C.S.I. Creative Science Investigators), and LUMIN8 Children’s Choir where children spread the light of God’s word through music and recording their own CD. We’re just not leaving it to chance – we want kids to know their God and express their faith! Student Ministry – Byron Dickey Student ministry has experienced a whirlwind of change with God leading Toran Scott and Jordan Koller to Ridge Point Church in Holland. God had a perfect plan ready for a seamless transition. Byron Dickey has stepped in to direct our student ministry department and Aaron Bolduc is leading the high school. Junior Highers have been studying Genesis, and will explore Daniel’s character this summer with a series called, “I W Beets.” Our High School students recently finished a series on “What is the Gospel?”, and are now studying The Book of Revelation. Thirty-five students have signed up for the High School Marvel Arkansas trip. Several upperclassmen will be traveling with three other Calvary short-term missions teams. As you think of student ministries during this time of transition, please pray for wisdom, discernment, and perseverance as we minister to students and seek God’s direction. We desire that our students become fully-devoted followers of Christ as they navigate through adolescence. College and Young Adult Ministry – Mason Sherrill One of the joys of working with college students and young adults is seeing them reject the world and live for Christ. God is developing young leaders who engage others through edifying conversations, serving in the church, and praying for their peers. As we live life together in Christian community, we are lifting each other up in times of trouble, encouraging one another in times of disappointment, and celebrating with one another in the joys of life. Our college students, young adults, and young marrieds are serving throughout Calvary. We are learning what it means to count the cost, die to self, take up the cross, and follow Christ. This vision is exciting, yet the road will be difficult. I am excited to see how we as the Young Adult staff, and Calvary as a whole, can encourage the college students and young adults “to live a life worthy of the calling [they] have received” (Ephesians 4:1).

May 1-July 31 6:30-8:30pm in Room 145 Cost: $15 (Scholarships available) Offered simultaneously with DivorceCare, this 13 week class is geared for elementary age children.

The Divorce Care for Kids (DC4K) ministry continues to be a source of healing for families as we direct children to God, the redeemer of life. Here are some comments from parents of children who have experienced God's amazing healing power: “My child felt loved and accepted and free to speak her mind and share her feelings.” “Before it was challenge to talk about the divorce with my children, now it is easier." “DC4K is the highlight of my boys’ week.” “My child learned how to better deal with stress and worry.” Why is DC4K impacting so many children? Some of the reasons include: there is a weekly routine, children know what to expect; children experience God’s love through the volunteers. It’s a safe, fun place to be with other children that are dealing with the difficulties of divorce and the topics discussed are age appropriate and timely.

Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or sign up at calvarygr.org.
