The goal of each community group at Calvary is to meet together regularly, study God’s Word together, pray for one another and care for one another. We have groups that meet together with just adults and others that include the entire family. This month some of our family groups shared activities that bring their group closer together. As a family group, we always start out with a meal with a fun theme that kids help choose prior to the meeting. We went on a family mission trip together as a group. We always do a family activity that we relate to our lesson. We've also gone roller skating together for a social event! – Joel and Carla Shank We enjoy potlucks, we've gone bowling and have met at Millennium Park. We do lots of service projects, including sharing an informal worship service at Hope Network and serving dessert at Degage Ministries. We try to include the children on all of our service projects. We did the social justice study last year and learned a lot about human trafficking. We invited Amy, a missionary in Ukraine, to come and speak to our group. Currently, we're doing a study on raising Christ-centered children. – Kamil Family Group We've enjoyed game nights of Balderdash, shared the joys and struggles of parenting, and enjoyed potluck style meals. It's so refreshing to have friends in faith that are at the same stage of life. Watching our five kids under two grow, while our journey in Christ grows too has been such a blessing. er has brought us even closer. We would love to have a couple more families join us in our walk! - Cotter, Curnow, and Kirsch Families We all went to Sky Zone on a weekend where all ages could have fun together. As a group, we decided to volunteer in childcare for the Rewire series. Our kids could be in our classes while we served so it worked out perfectly! – Hodgson Family Group Our group got together before Thanksgiving and made pies and donated them to the Yellow House to pass out to families. The kids and adults helped out cutting apples, making pie crusts, and mixing up the pumpkin. – Christie Thompson At our last meeting, the kids learned about our Calvary’s missionaries in China, the location of China, learned to use chopsticks, tried Chinese paper folding zhezhi and watched a Torch Lighters Video on Gladys Aylward. The kids closed our evening by praying over China and we used the book Operation World for our prayer requests. – Libby Bowman

Thursdays | June 5 - August 21 | 6:00-9:00pm This summer young adults of all ages will gather together weekly for life-giving conversation around the dinner table, followed by honest engagement with the book of Philippians. Together we’ll discover the joy and peace that can only be found in following Jesus. Don’t miss the Bible Study Kick-Off on Thursday, June 5 at 6:00pm under the canopy at Entrance A. Join us for a BBQ and worship. You’ll hear details about the Young Adult Bible Study on the Book of Philippians. Note: Young Adult Communities (College, Merge & Foundations) will not meet, June-August. This Bible Study will be the only weekly Young Adult gathering.

As we all rejoiced with gladness while Jill and Jen led the group in a time of reflection and worship. The Lord surely was present… As Chef Kevin served a delicious brunch… smoothies included. The Lord surely was present… As His warmth and quiet love surrounded the table hosts as they wrapped each mom/caregiver with a beautifully knit prayer shawl from Calvary’s Prayer Shawl Ministry. The Lord surely was present… As prayers were spoken, tears were shed and hugs were given. What a joy it was to experience the rejoicing, the laughter and thanksgiving for the wonderful way God, the mighty One, the One who saves was surely in our midst. The Special Needs ministry staff would like to thank everyone who made this event possible. Laurie Droge, Mary Hulst and the many ladies from the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Thank you for serving the Lord well with your gift of 30 prayer shawls. We thank Jill Miller and Jennifer Benham from the Woman’s Ministry for using their beautiful gifts of music and testimony, and to the kitchen staff and table hostesses who made each lady feel welcomed and special. Finally, to Karen Marsman who planned the event. Karen, we appreciate and love you! The comments from everyone were unanimous – “This year was extra special.” To God be the Glory!

A Mother’s PrAyers The road to fame and success was guaranteed. Being part of the national futbol team brought recognition, nice cars, and lots of money and guaranteed good employment. While it made a mother proud, she knew her son was on a path that didn’t include God.

At our “Radical Rescuers” Missions Conference in March, Dr. Len Bartlotti, our speaker, challenged us to “stand at the door” by building bridges that let others in to worship Jesus. Many of us were touched – and even convicted – as we heard him say “I haven’t come for your money; I’ve come for your children and grandchildren!” Bringing the Gospel to the Nations means that sometimes parents are called not just to release their children to go, but also to actively prepare and send them. Here are two stories from Calvary’s missionaries that show just that – and that testify to the power of a praying mother.

Every day this mother would spend times in prayer. Three times a day she would tell her children that she couldn’t be disturbed as she spent time with the Lord. Her son refused to go to church. Luis Palau was coming to town and she did everything to get her son to attend the opening night. He tricked his mom into believing he would come but started driving to a friends’ party about 20 miles away. He was 15 miles into his trip when his car broke down. It was a deserted road but a trucker heading back into the city said he would tow him back. Connected by a steel cable Reinaldo Acevedo thought he would be killed as the trucker drove like he wasn’t towing anything. He cried to God to keep him safe and he promised that he would accept Christ as Savior if he would make it home alive. The next night Reinaldo went and heard Luis Palau and was the first to stand and go forward when the invitation was given. He walked away from the pleasures of man to serve the Lord. Today he and his wife Brenda, serve as directors of Word of Life – Paraguay. They have planted churches and are equipping the next generation to take over as spiritual leaders in their country. Reinaldo knows it all began with his mother’s prayers.


Consider these challenges: 1) Are we willing to go where God calls? 2) Are we willing to support our children or grandchildren to follow God’s call?

stAnding uP for jesus The year was 1961 and the invitation was given for anyone who needed to place their faith in Jesus to do so. Dr. Louis Paul Lehman was speaking at Calvary Church and on that particular day Gloria ‘Glo’ Riepma came to Jesus for salvation. Glo began to grow and a year later during a Calvary missions conference a challenge was given to parents; would you be willing to make a promise before the Lord that you would do everything in your power to help any of your children get to the mission field if they felt called to missions? That day Glo looked at her three young sons and stood to her feet. Her six-year-old at that time remembers that day well even though he is now 57 years old. Years later, the Riepma family left and moved to Jackson Michigan. After committing his life to Christ as a teenager, Mike Riepma was challenged to pray about being a missionary. The scene from that missions conference in 1961 flooded his mind and he went to Bible school to be trained as a missionary. It was 1980 and Mike knew God was leading him to tribal ministry in Bolivia. His mission hadn’t trained him for raising support; he didn’t know what to do, but the first place he stopped was Calvary Church. The person responsible for missions cut Mike’s presentation short, gave some advice, and said it was unlikely that the church would support him, but he would bring his name up to the missions committee.

Two months later, that same missions leader called Mike back and said that the committee and church board wanted to support him. Mike was dumbfounded that he ever heard back and even more surprised at the amount committed. He asked what had led to their decision. The answer came back that several remembered ‘Glo’ and her desire to see her children follow Christ. Calvary Church continues to support Mike & Cher Riepma. For over 30 years they have poured their lives into the Esa Ejja tribe in northern Bolivia; they have translated the scriptures and published dozens of Christian books into the tribal language; they have planted a church and raised four children. Soon they will say goodbye to one of their sons who, along with his wife and baby are about to head into missions in one of the most populous Islamic nations on earth.

This month we begin what we hope will be an enduring and encouraging conversation about who we are as God’s people, and who God has called us to be as a church.

living out our mission

Our mission at Calvary is to be Christ’s church in this place. The Elders unanimously believe that God is leading us to remain in this location, being good stewards of the property He has given us here at East Beltline and I-96. As we have discussed our space needs over the years, we assumed that God wanted us to build a larger Sanctuary. Last year, through an extended time of prayer and fasting God made it clear that this was not his intention for our church. Instead God has asked us to make significant updates to our current Sanctuary and Student Ministries area, while also creating new space for Children’s Ministry, community fellowship and a prayer garden. This project will also include a number of other key improvements to our building which we will share in detail on May 18.

being the church

We believe that the church is a community where we gather to profess Jesus as Lord in worship, where we grow in our faith in the context of community, where we serve one another with the gifts God has given us, where we are committed to both rejoicing and suffering as a family and where the gospel is proclaimed that many would be reconciled to Christ. As we enhance our building, we want to draw people not just into the Sanctuary, but into places of fellowship and service and learning, that we might become like Christ in the context of the assembly and beyond. We desire a building that enables a fuller expression of what it means to experience God’s grace.

removing barriers

Everyone who has come to Christ has a story of redemption; a story of undeserved grace; a story of God’s love. Our task is not to determine how God

works His grace out in each life or the worthiness of the recipients; our task is to offer God’s grace and blessing freely, and to eliminate barriers that keep people from receiving it wherever we can. Ultimately enhancing our building will allow us to remove some of the barriers that keep people from experiencing the grace they need in their lives.

stepping out in faith

God’s hope for His people is that they would be transformed into Christ’s image. One of the ways that God does this transforming work in our lives is by calling us to greater dependence on Him. As we move from relying on our own power to relying on Him, we see God’s goodness and grace in new ways. We believe that now is a time in the life of this church when God is calling us to exercise greater amounts of faith, to step out on the water and trust that His hand will sustain us and guide us forward. As we see in the life of Peter, God uses these steps of faith to shape us, to mold us and to enable us to do amazing things for His kingdom’s sake.

On the evening of May 18 we invite you to come to a Town Hall Meeting where we will share information on the building project God has laid before our church. We will be sharing some of the designs our architectural team has developed and how you can participate in the process as we move toward congregational approval this Fall. Thank you for taking the time to prayerfully consider where God is leading our church family. We do not take these next steps lightly, but trust that the God who has been faithful in the past will continue to guide us forward.

Choir (Chapel): Scripture set to music is the focus of this group of Go-Getters. It is a way for those who cannot read to hide the word of God in their hearts. The focus is not on singing ability. Scripture Intake (Room 207): After a brief introduction and prayer, students listen to Scripture being read, followed by a summary and question time. Sign Language (Room 211): The sign language class is open to the larger

community of the church. There, students are taught basic communication and the use of signs to praise during worship.

We are so glad you have joined us today. We know there are many churches you could have chosen to attend and we are glad you chose to be here. Perhaps this week you have experienced what a stormy place this world can be. At times our lives feel unpredictable and out of control. The Apostle Peter knew all about that. He knew what it was like to fail and to feel defeat and he knew what it was like to suffer. But he also knew what it was like to walk on water. This year at Calvary Church, we are studying Peter’s letters to the church. In them we see that Peter is telling us that hard times come and that life isn’t always easy, but that God is a refuge for each one of us.
