OUR MISSION Calvert Hall College, a Lasallian Catholic college preparatory school, prepares a diverse community of young men to achieve their full potential utilizing their unique talents. Inspired by the faith and zeal of St. John Baptist de LaSalle, our students develop a respect for others as part of an inclusive, lifelong Calvert Hall brotherhood as Men of Intellect, Men of Faith and Men of Integrity. Calvert Hall College admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origins to all rights and privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at our school. FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni, Parents, Family and Friends,

A

s we come to the end of our 175th year, we recognize we still have some celebrating to do. Graduation and Gala 175 were postponed, and we plan to come together for those momentous occasions at a later time. Many other events were postponed or cancelled, yet the traditions, spirit and brotherhood that are Calvert Hall shined through. A pandemic is not enough to derail The Hall. When the pandemic initially occurred, we hoped we would only be apart for two weeks, not the remainder of the academic year. With growing concern in March, the school leadership began planning for the possibility of virtual school, and we were ready when the Governor announced school closings. We then changed our learning platform asking our students and faculty to take their studies online. Words cannot properly express my pride in our leadership, faculty, staff and students for their response. Students were engaged outside of classes in multiple ways by teachers, coaches and moderators. Our students continued to learn, and we came to a successful conclusion to the school year in June. I want to also express my admiration and gratitude to the Class of 2020. Although they showed amazing strength and resilience, they missed out on the most... from athletics to prom. When I spoke with our seniors and their families during our virtual forum in May, I shared that they hold a special place in our 175-year history. They will be remembered for generations to come. People will remember them as THE CLASS of 2020, or simply as THE CLASS. We wish them the best as they leave us for new schools and opportunities, and they remain in our prayers. We pray for peace. The killing of George Floyd has awakened the consciousness of our nation and region. Racism is wrong and it is a sin. We cannot remain on the sidelines. We cannot remain silent. Calvert Hall is proud of and celebrates our diverse student population. At Calvert Hall, all are welcome! It is not enough to claim diversity; we must continually work to make our community even more inclusive. We must support our African-American students and stand with them and their families. We embrace meaningful discussions and support action that inspire communities.

Our counseling department held a virtual discussion for students to begin conversing about the current issues gripping our country. A similar discussion was held for faculty and staff earlier this month. Additionally, we have created a program committee for diversity, equity, and inclusivity. This committee will meet throughout the year to implement diversity, equity, and inclusivity programming for our students, faculty and staff. Special thanks are in order for so many of you for your continued support of Calvert Hall, even during these trying times. We rely on your support to make a Hall education available for our students and you responded. During our 5th Annual All Day Hall Day, we raised over $300,000 from more than 1,500 donors. We continue in the silent phase of our capital campaign to increase our endowment and support a few special projects. We have had early success and will continue forward with the campaign, fully understanding it is a difficult time for many. John Baptist de La Salle told the first Christian Brothers that the greatest miracle they could achieve was to touch the hearts of the students entrusted to their care. This has been the mission of Calvert Hall for the last 175 years and we will continue to live out this mission for the next 175 years. I sincerely thank you and our students as you have deeply touched my heart during this unusual and unprecedented year. Live Jesus in our Hearts………….Forever! Sincerely,

Brother John Kane, FSC, Ed.D. President

In my 25 years of coaching a team on It’s Academic, one thing I marveled about is how constant the longest running televised game show in history remained over its 60-year history. The only things that changed were the questions and the long-time host, Mac McGarry who retired in 2011. This season presented a rare, unexpected and unheard-of change midway through the taping season.

evaluated by judges The Calvert Hall team, coming off a first-round victory over Francis Scott Key and Manchester Valley in January was set to return later in the season for its playoff round against Towson and Franklin High Schools but the coronavirus pandemic brought the season to a grinding halt. Despite the challenges of not being able to gather as a team nor use the television studio, the production staff of It’s Academic was able to pull it all together using an alternate format, Zoom Technology, as a platform to produce the quiz show. Executive producer, Susan Lechner, mentioned after the very first virtual match that “with the new format, there was a certain intimacy that you don’t get with the formality of the television studio”. Players agree that it was easy to confer during team questions and that those watching could now hear teams discuss answers which made it more interesting. The It’s Academic team did conduct a few virtual practices to prepare for the playoff round using Microsoft Teams during the shut-down. The virtual practices gave us all a different, and more personal view of the team members.

This past year, the Culinary Cards held a joint restaurant outing with Maryvale’s Cooking Club as well as added cooking classes to their programming. In an effort to keep the club connected during the pandemic, co-club moderators, Elizabeth Almeter, Sylvia Doud and Tom Fan, shared a series of cooking demonstrations native to their own cultures and passions. Besides being interactive, each video demonstration was designed to highlight a few kitchen techniques and culinary hacks that would help people while at home.

Hopefully, the videos were enjoyable and brought people a bit closer and more connected during these unusual times.

virtual school At the start of the 175th academic year, no one anticipated our school year would conclude with distance learning. We rose to the challenge, and we found ways to stay connected in and out of the academic setting.

N

ew initiatives such as My175, Hall From Home, and daily virtual prayer were established. The My175 Challenge was created by our Director of Campus Ministry, Michael Clark, and Alex Brune ’20. They asked Calvert Hall students, faculty, staff and alumni to answer a series of questions on Twitter or Instagram tagging Calvert Hall. Questions ranged from who is your favorite CHC teacher, to what is your best memory at CHC, to sharing encouragement during quarantine. These clips were shared on the Calvert Hall Instagram story and were later complied into a fulllength video which is featured on the Calvert Hall Instagram and YouTube channel. Hall From Home is an initiative established by our innovative Campus Ministry team. They kicked off a 4-week long message series from some of Calvert Hall's teachers and students. These groups met online once a week, with a student leader and teacher proctor discussing a weekly message and embarked upon some fun challenges. Our Campus Ministry team also led daily virtual prayer at 8:45a. Every weekday morning, the Calvert Hall community at-large was invited to start their day with faith and fellowship.

aculty members found innovative ways to live lecture. Lectures and classes were conducted using Microsoft Teams. Members of the CHC Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band took part in the premier performance of “Mandatory Social Distancing” commissioned by a consortium of 27 college, universities, and high schools. The annual Art Show went digital with a look book displaying all of the pieces created by our talented students. The Math Resource Center and faculty members held virtual office hours for students in need of additional assistance. Our school counselors regularly checked in with their students to discuss coursework and overall well-being. Our college counselors organized a virtual college roundtable for students to meet with college admissions officers.

aculty and staff found ways to spread positivity. Mrs. Doud continued the Mindfulness Minute. Twice weekly she helped the community find peace and zen through guided meditation. Mr. Rowe ’13 created Weekly Encouragement videos tying in scripture readings. Mr. Radebaugh ’98 found ways to keep the faculty and staff connected by hosting multiple family friendly bingo nights as well as chat rooms. The School Leadership hosted three virtual forums as a platform for parents and students to share updates and allow any questions to be asked. The counseling team hosted a virtual forum for students, faculty and staff on diversity, equity, and inclusivity.

“Just want to take a minute to express how impressive Calvert Hall has been over the last 6 weeks in dealing with the COVID crisis. It was very impressive how quickly you moved to a new plan to carry on your mission. The quality of the lesson plans are equally impressive even from the beginning. When this is over and there is time to look back, others should study your response.” “I am truly amazed at the purposeful and organized way Calvert Hall has continued learning for our students without missing ONE SINGLE BEAT. It means so much right now while literally EVERYTHING else is uncertain. I love that, when we sit down for dinner, I can still ask my kids "how was school today." “From various things I’m reading and hearing through my son and other CHC parents, it is quite apparent you and the staff/teachers are working countless hours to deliver the best and most seamless academic experience to our boys. I can’t thank you and your team/teachers enough for all you are doing, and I’m so proud of the way CHC is handling the pandemic.”

5 th Annual Al l Day Hal l Day Calvert Hall College High School hosted their 5th annual day of giving also known as All Day Hall Day on Friday, May 15, 2020. The school experienced great success as more than 1,500 donors participated raising more than $300,000. This year’s numbers top last year’s records of participation (1,008) and donations ($250,000). Brother John posed the challenge that if more than 1,170 individuals participated that he would shave his mustache. At 11:30 p.m. on All Day Hall Day, Brother John shaved his mustache for the first time since 1986. All Day Hall Day is 24 hours of celebrating and supporting The Hall. In years past, All Day Hall Day was a day chock full of on-campus events and activities. Given the current times, All Day Hall Day was moved to a completely virtual platform. This year, the advancement team hosted realtime talk shows, a cooking show, mass, musical performances, a bedtime reading for younger Cardinals, and reruns of the 100th Turkey Bowl and 2019 MIAA lacrosse game.

President Brother John Kane FSC, Ed.D, exclaimed, “Calvert Hall is an amazing and strong community. In a time of uncertainty, we responded to the challenge to make a difference for our students. We exceeded our goal of 1,170 donors by 400. It was an effort by everyone: Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, students, alumni, parents and past parents, grandparents and friends. It is difficult for me to find the words to express our gratitude but simply stated, ‘Calvert Hall Proud!’’

Naming Calvert Hall as a IRA beneficiary can be a powerful option for planned giving! "When done correctly, this strategy can provide double tax savings – first, the charitable gift will be deductible for estate tax purposes, and second, The Hall will not have to pay any income tax on the funds it receives. This double benefit can save combined taxes that would otherwise eat up a substantial portion of your IRA." – Brian Kroneberger ‘85, CFP | Managing Director at the Dyer Kroneberger RBC Wealth Management Group

The CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act includes several provisions that may impact your decisions about charitable giving this year. The CARES Act allows all taxpayers, including those who do not itemize, to take a charitable deduction of up to $300. The deduction does not apply to contributions made to a donor advised fund or a supporting organization. In addition, the law allows those who itemize their taxes to deduct up to 100 percent of their Adjusted Gross Income for charitable cash contributions to qualified charities, such as Calvert Hall. The rule applies to cash gifts made during the 2020 calendar year. The law temporarily suspends the requirements for required minimum distributions (RMD) for the 2020 tax year. If you are 70½ or older, you can still make a gift to Calvert Hall from your IRA. You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction. This information is not intended as legal or tax advice. For such advice, please consult an attorney or tax adviser.
