OUR MISSION Calvert Hall College, a Lasallian Catholic college preparatory school, prepares a diverse community of young men to achieve their full potential utilizing their unique talents. Through excellent academic and extracurricular programs led by innovative and dedicated educators, our students become confident men with the ethical foundation for service, independent thinking, and responsible leadership. Inspired by the faith and zeal of St. John Baptist de LaSalle, our students develop a respect for others as part of an inclusive, lifelong Calvert Hall brotherhood as Men of Intellect, Men of Faith and Men of Integrity. Calvert Hall College admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origins to all rights and privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at our school. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in administration of our educational and admissions policies, scholarship programs, athletic, and other school-administered programs. FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni, Parents, Family and Friends,
W
e are now past the halfway point of our 175th year. This past October, we began our yearlong celebration at the 175th Anniversary Mass. Archbishop Lori was the celebrant. Our next celebration will take place on March 21st with Gala 175 at SECU Arena on the campus of Towson University. We hope you will consider attending. It is sure to be the event of the year. We will host an even bigger All Day Hall Day this year on May 15, the feast of St. John Baptist de La Salle. It has been a remarkable year and many of our successes are chronicled in this issue of The Cardinal. As I reflect on the year, I am drawn to our anniversary book, Vitae Via Virtus: Calvert Hall 175. It is beautifully written by Bill Tamulonis ’76. We are grateful to him, Danielle Hladky, Director of Marketing and Communications, and many others who helped make this book a reality. You can purchase your copy in the Cardinal Shop or online. Now is a time to celebrate, but it is also a time to prepare as we want you to be in involved in our continuing story. Below is an excerpt of my final reflection in the book (p. 123): Today’s Calvert Hall is not the Calvert Hall of 1845 nor is it the school of 1945 or 1995 or even 2005. The Hall has responded to the changes in education. The location has changed three times over 175 years. New buildings and facilities have been added over the years. New courses have been introduced and new pedagogies have been employed by the faculty. Technology has dramatically changed the classroom experience. We are a state of the art school that will continue to respond to the challenges of a 21st Century education.
Calvert Hall’s foundation is made of the story of our community. Thousands of boys have come to The Hall and have left as young men. For 175 years there have been faculty and staff called by God to this vocation, full of zeal for their ministry as teachers, mentors, and coaches. Christian Brothers have joined with lay teachers and staff fully committed to the Lasallian Mission of educating the young. They have profoundly affected the students entrusted by God and parents to their care. De La Salle stated that an educator can achieve no greater miracle than to touch the hearts of their students. This is what has occurred and continues to occur at Calvert Hall on a daily basis. Our story continues. The work continues. Calvert Hall is at the beginning of the next chapter. We pledge to respond to the challenges of an ever changing world and we pledge that we will never lose the core values that make us Calvert Hall. We will continue to touch hearts for the next 175 years. Thank you for your continued passion and support of Calvert Hall. St. John Baptist de La Salle…….Pray for us! Live Jesus in our Hearts………….Forever!
The paradox is that Calvert Hall of today is still the Calvert Hall of 1845, 1945, 1995 and of 2005. This is true because, at our core, we have not changed. Calvert Hall is built on Lasallian values derived from St. John Baptist de La Salle and the traditions of the Christian Brothers. It is these values, starting with faith, that have remained a constant at The Hall for all of our history. The heart of a Lasallian school is the education of the whole person, respecting each individual, while joining in a community that professes faith, justice, and service. We are a community that welcomes all.
Sincerely,
Brother John Kane, FSC, Ed.D. President

spirit at The Hall. Founded by the 2019-2020 student spirit director, Patrick Lavelle ’20, the club’s mission is to enhance the student experience while promoting our athletics and our student-athletes. Over 300 students signed up for The Crazies in its inaugural year. The support of the students at Calvert Hall is the utmost priority and while spirit exists every day throughout the school, the Cardinal Crazies looks to build and enhance on that school spirit. Each student in the club receives a punch card that they must bring to each event. For each game they attend, a punch is given to their card which at the end of the year can turn in for prizes and incentives. Throughout the first year, The Crazies are asked to attend 20+ Varsity athletic games. During the fall semester, 8 different varsity athletic events were highlighted, most notably: the MIAA Championship Cross Country meet. Four games were identified in the first semester winter season and four more will be added after exams. Each club member that attends a minimum of 15 games will be invited to an exclusive event at the end of the year. Throughout the year, there are specifically targeted games featuring giveaways for the first 100 in attendance. Some of those giveaways include rally towels and light up glow sticks. The second semester will bring many more incentives and fun surprises. The club is moderated by Mr. Michael Clark (Campus Ministry).

Dale McArdle and Marilynn Duker have committed $625,000 to an endowment supporting up to four students in the La Salle Program. To date, this is the largest gift made to the La Salle Program. No school does it as well as Calvert Hall — the school helped him grow in really meaningful ways,” shared Marilynn. According to Brother John Kane, President of Calvert Hall, “Calvert Hall and I are most grateful for the deep generosity of Marilynn and Dale. The La Salle Program has long been recognized as the leading program of its kind for students with learning differences among Baltimore area independent schools. The McArdle/Duker Scholarship will continue to make the La Salle Program accessible to deserving students.”

“We create moments,” said Louis Heidrick. “The kind of moments students want to pause to appreciate and take pictures to remember.” Calvert Hall’s traditions join students together with their families and others they love into a community that honors and celebrates their high school turning points and achievements. “Freshmen begin building bonds of unity before their first day of class,” said Brother Patzwall, “and over four years of shared experiences, they develop a sense of brotherhood and loyalty toward one another and toward their school. Naming Calvert Hall as a IRA beneficiary can be a powerful option for planned giving! "When done correctly, this strategy can provide double tax savings – first, the charitable gift will be deductible for estate tax purposes, and second, The Hall will not have to pay any income tax on the funds it receives. This double benefit can save combined taxes that would otherwise eat up a substantial portion of your IRA." – Brian Kroneberger ‘85, CFP | Managing Director at the Dyer Kroneberger RBC Wealth Management Group
