FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Alumni, Parents, Family and Friends,
This issue features the Christian Brothers and their impact on Calvert Hall. The vision of Bishop Eccleston and the openness to the call from God of a young Brother Francis McMullen began the Christian Brothers’ legacy at The Hall. Countless Brothers have passed through the corridors of the “Old Hall” and now here in Towson. Some of these men have become legendary in status, such as Brother Gabriel, Brother Regis, Brother Gregory, the two Brother Kevins, Strong and Stanton, Brother Andrew, and Brother Charles. This list could go on and we also recognize the contributions of hundreds of Christian Brothers who dedicated part of their religious lives to bringing a Lasallian education to the young men of Calvert Hall.We are grateful for their service and commitment and are blessed by their legacy.
We are one year away from the 175th Anniversary of the founding of Calvert Hall along with the 100th Turkey Bowl. The Board of Trustees will approve a new strategic plan for Calvert Hall in the fall. It will challenge us to continue the excellence that is our hallmark and seek to become even better. We continue to work to keep Calvert Hall accessible to a diverse student population. I am grateful to our many benefactors, but I ask you to consider doing more and that everyone might join in this effort. I do believe the return is well worth the investment.Thank you so much for your support and enjoy the summer. Live Jesus in our hearts . . . Forever! Sincerely,
Brother John Kane, FSC, Ed.D. President
Summer 2018
We had a great year at The Hall.We saw the academic excellence demonstrated through the Class of 2018 in the number of college acceptances and scholarships awarded. It was a strong year in athletics exemplified by lacrosse winning its second consecutive MIAA championship, a remarkable feat in the MIAA. It is becoming a wonderful matter-of-course that the competition marching band once again won the Maryland state and national championship titles. The fine arts program continued to be a distinctive feature of Calvert Hall.We were impressed by vibrant artwork, delightful concerts and another outstanding musical theatre production of Beauty and the Beast. Robotics competed nationally and internationally. There really is something for everyone here.
The Brothers are called to see the work of education as God’s work.We are called to be big brothers to our students. De La Salle frequently used the image of the Good Shepherd as a model for what the Brothers strive to do. We still have a strong commitment of Brothers to The Hall. There are eight full-time Brothers on the faculty and staff, a significant number. We are also blessed with a strong lay faculty and staff who understand and are committed to the Lasallian Mission of Calvert Hall. They see education as a vocation and not just a job. They get it! De La Salle told the first Brothers that the greatest success they could have was to “touch the hearts of your students entrusted to your care by parents and by God.” As I observe the interactions of our faculty and staff it is a great joy to see this happening on a daily basis with our widely diverse student population.

hope as summer gets underway you will be able to find some down time to be with family and friends. It is hard to believe another school year is over. Our students may think it went slowly as they longed for summer vacation, but the faculty and staff felt the year flew by in what seemed a flash. Less than a month ago, we sent the Class of 2018 on their way to join the ranks of our distinguished alumni. We will miss these wonderful young men while looking forward to the arrival of the Class of 2022 in August.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT
C lub S p o t l i g ht
inety-two per cent of Calvert Hall students particiN pate in at least one club, activity, or sport. Students can join one or more of our 70 clubs and activities.
This issue we explore the Model United Nations Club and the Speech and Debate Club.
Model UN Students in Model UN gain a wide range of skills and process information critical to their success in high school, college, and beyond. They learn public speaking skills and deliver speeches in front of an audience. Students develop research skills and the ability to synthesize information from all over the world. They practice writing policies while learning about cultures they never even knew existed. Students learn critical social skills that will help them throughout life. Whether it’s learning to discuss complex issues and compromise, or learning how to be a leader for the first time, many students “find their voice” through Model UN. Model UN helps students build the confidence to succeed. Students work primarily through committee simulations of the UN General Assembly. A committee is a group of countries that work together to create a resolution and solve the potential problem at hand. Model UN has three main types of debates: General Assemblies, ECOSOCs, and Crisis committees. A General Assembly is a discus-
sion between countries at a certain point in time. ECOSOC is a type of committee in which countries discuss current problems and possible solutions. A crisis committee is a fast-paced committee in which the scenario is constantly changed. This past year, Calvert Hall’s Model UN team competed in the Johns Hopkins Model UN Conference and the Baltimore Area Model UN Conference. The Johns Hopkins conference hosted Model UN teams from across the US and even schools internationally. At the Baltimore event, the team had two delegates awarded Best Delegate: John Moses ‘19 and Thomas Podles ‘20. Next year, we will be hosting our very own Model UN Conference. The club is moderated by Mr. Ken Goedeke (Religion Department).
Speech and Debate Club
The Speech and Debate team is a year-round activity, with students traveling locally, regionally, and nationally 10-12 weekends in an academic year. Students this past year have been to St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and George Mason University in Fairfax,
Members of the Speech and Debate team also participate in public debate events. In March, four Calvert Hall students were invited to the House of Representatives Office Building. During the public debate, students worked with peers from California and Florida to create a dialogue on gun violence. Students were also given the opportunity to go behind the scenes and ask questions of Congressional Staffers. This club is moderated by Mr. Peter Susko (Business Department).
Summer 2018
Virginia. The Speech and Debate team finished the regular season ranked 5th in the state of Maryland. At this year’s state finals, four Calvert Hall students qualified to attend the National Catholic Forensic League Tournament. Students traveled to Washington, DC and competed against the top-ranked teams from across the country.
5 Cardinal Magazine
The Speech and Debate team provides students with the opportunity to develop multiple skills that many employers are looking for such as public speaking, critical thinking, leadership, teamwork, and professionalism. Students participate in a range of speech and debate formats; some preparing and memorizing dramatic speeches from famous plays while others create their own speeches in a format similar to Ted Talks. On the debate side, students take on controversial issues ranging from the state of our education system and gun control laws to whether or not NCAA student-athletes should be paid. In each event, students learn to work and prepare under intense deadlines.
Faculty & Staff News IN MEMORIAM OF BR. KEVIN STRONG, FSC
I
t is with great sorrow that Calvert Hall shares with you news regarding the passing on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 of the first President of Calvert Hall, Br. Kevin Strong, FSC. Brother served as a teacher, counselor, vice principal, principal, and president at Christian Brother Schools in Philadelphia, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, Radnor, PA, Miami, FL, Washington, DC, Canton, OH, and Baltimore, MD. In recognition of Brother’s service to the needs of the church in Baltimore, Brother was honored by Cardinal Keeler with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal in 1996. President Br. John Kane, FSC said, “He made a tremendous contribution to Calvert Hall as the first President. To me he was: teacher, mentor, advisor, friend and most importantly Brother. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Christian
Brother Schools, was a pioneer in establishing gratuitous schools that made access to education available to all. His work quickly spread through France and after his death in 1719, continued to spread around the globe. There are De La Salle schools in 80 different countries. The De La Salle schools are organized into districts. Calvert Hall is a part of the District of Eastern North America also known as DENA. DENA includes more than 250 Christian Brothers. What is special about a Christian Brothers’ education? “A Christian Brothers' education is both intellectual and spiritual. We are educated in theology and in the field of our choice in Arts and Sciences. We also learn about the Rules of the Institute during the Novitiate year. The Brothers also have a program for continuing formation during our life."
– Br. John Chung, FSC

“I think a Christian Brothers' education has always revolved around the person of Christ! Jesus took his apostles, disciples and many other followers from wherever they were in their lives and led them to see the greatness in him and the greatness in themselves. Students come in and we begin to work with them and give them tools to do the same. The Brothers' centuries of experience in teaching has helped them and their colleagues hone the skills needed to accomplish this noble task.”

What does a typical Brother’s day look like? “Each year, the Community sets our community schedule: Prayer time, meal time and social time. We gather for weekday morning prayer at 7:00 a.m. Morning prayer can range from Liturgical Office, a communion service or Mass. Breakfast is up to the individual and is typically on-the-run. Much of the day is spent teaching classes and other assigned activities around the school. In the afternoon or evening, each Brother sets aside individual quiet time for prayer and spiritual reading. The Community meets for evening prayer followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, we usually have a social before dinner. Weekend Mass is determined by the availability of the priest and is normally Saturday evening or Sunday morning.”
