FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni, Family, Parents, and Friends,

This issue focuses on vocations to the religious life and priesthood. Two young men reflect on how their Calvert Hall experience helped them make the decision to enter the Seminary and join the Christian Brothers. They give great testimony to their experience here and to vocation. Calvert Hall has a long tradition of graduates answering a call to this life and we are proud of the many who have responded. There is still a great need in the Church for people to join in this work and we celebrate that there are Calvert Hall men responding to the call of religious life. This year, we also experienced loss. Long time faculty members Bernie McGinn and Jack Murtaugh ’61 passed away. Bernie spent many years overseeing the Academic Resource Center and coaching golf while Jack served over 45 years as a Spanish teacher, language chair, and chair of the guidance department. Bernie’s and Jack’s long service to our students has made them legendary. They join the likes of George Kropp, Bill Karpovich, Charles Freitag, Frank Clary, Larry Wineke and Ted Thorman. Someone mentioned to me recently, that heaven now has a pretty good faculty. The loss of these two men is heavy on our hearts but we also celebrate their goodness and what they accomplished.Truly, these men saw their lives in education as vocation. They stood side by side with the Brothers to make our Mission a reality. As I reflect on these true Legends of the Hall, I can’t help but think of how blessed we are and have been. For many years, dedicated Brothers and dedicated lay men and lay women have worked side by side making Calvert Hall the wonderful school it is. From Brother Francis McMullen, to Brother Gabriel, to Brother Gregory Cavalier, to Brother Andy, to Brother Regis, to Brother Kevin Strong, to Brother

The good news is that Calvert Hall is the same today as yesterday. Calvert Hall has a dedicated faculty and staff comprised of Brothers and lay teachers who are passionate about The Hall and its mission. They do not come to work each day; they come to school. John Baptist de La Salle wrote, “You must, then, look upon your work as one of the most important and necessary services in the Church, one that has been entrusted to you by pastors, fathers and mothers (MTR 199.1).” Hearts are touched and lives are transformed on a daily basis because of the dedication of these wonderful people. De La Salle also told the Brothers that this work is not your own, it is God’s work. This is what we do at Calvert Hall. It is an exciting time at The Hall.We approach the 100th Anniversary game of the Turkey Bowl in 2019 and the 175th Anniversary of our founding in three years. The Board of Trustees is leading the process for a new strategic plan.We can and will achieve even greater things. We celebrate our many blessings and dedicated people but we will not stand still. As we continue to move forward, I ask all of you to join us in this process. We need your continued support as we provide a Lasallian education now and in the future. The Hall is built on the foundation of 172 years of excellence and tradition with an educational program open to innovation and creativity. I wish you the best for the rest of the summer months. Live Jesus in our hearts . . . Forever! Sincerely, Brother John Kane FSC, Ed.D.

Summer 2017

This past year, our students' academic performance continued to be impressive. We had 275 students take 627 Advanced Placement exams. Our marching band won a national championship. Athletics teams had great success and our clubs and activities were vibrant. Robotics achieved world recognition. Our students performed countless hours of service in the region and on service immersion trips. If you did not see the Theater presentation of Les Miserables, you missed the best show in the Baltimore region this year.We are very proud of their remarkable efforts.

John Herron, to Brother Kevin Stanton, to Brother Benedict, to Brother Charles Filberg, and so many other Brothers, we have been graced. At the same time, let us not forget the likes of Joe Binder, John Thaler, Elsie Paliath, Lou Heidrick, Lou Civitarese, Kathy Koth, Ed Patro, Joyce Reamy, Pat Curran and the contributions of so many more distinguished lay teachers over the decades. Associated together, amazing things have happened at Calvert Hall.

I

t is my hope that you will have some down time in the summer months to relax and be with family. While we all enjoy our vacation opportunities, there is no real slowdown at The Hall. On June 3, we wished the Class of 2017 farewell. Now, we focus on welcoming the Class of 2021 along with our returning students in late August. We are proud of the many accomplishments of our recent senior class, yet we are excited by what our new freshmen will bring to The Hall for the 2017 – 2018 year.

Answering the Call at The Hall

T

Summer 2017

he journey of discerning a vocation to the religious life is a challenging one. Justin Gough ’11, a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, is entering his third year of study at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Paul Cillo ’11 will be entering the postulate of The Christian Brothers in August. These two share the motivation behind their decisions to answer the call.

JUSTIN GOUGH ‘11

he student-selected motto for T my junior year at the Hall – the critical year of my discernment

of a vocation to the priesthood – was aptly chosen: “Answer the Call”. Printed upon our spirit shirts and referred to frequently in faculty addresses, that year’s slogan, at the local level, sought to inspire the student body to give of themselves more fully to the community and the brotherhood of Calvert Hall. For myself, this commonly heard mantra gave me cause to take seriously the still, quiet urging I felt within my heart to become a priest of Jesus Christ. This, along with the fine examples of many great mentors and teachers, helped me recognize God’s will for my life and to respond positively to that call. At the onset of my junior year, I volunteered as a tutor at Archbishop Borders School in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore City. The faculty coordinator was the late Br. Philip DePorter FSC. He taught religion and was a guidance counselor. Though Br. Phil was not my assigned guidance counselor, he nevertheless encouraged me in my vocation. One day, he asked me if I had considered a call to the priesthood. In fact, I had. “Why not the Brothers?” he pondered. “Brother,” I responded, “I want to say Mass.” He smiled and gave me a pat on the back, as if he knew my answer long before he had even asked. Our conversations from then on always revolved around my discernment

and, in many ways, he became my first true spiritual director. In September of my senior year, Br. Phil quickly took ill and passed away just two short weeks into the new semester. His death shook me and caused me to reconsider my vocation. I had begun the seminary application process with the Archdiocese of Baltimore over the summer and was now questioning whether I should continue it. The Lord provided, as he always does, by quickly putting several people in my life, friends and teachers at Calvert Hall, to support me in his place. In particular, I cannot help but thank God for people like my teachers Chris Barczak, the late Ted Thormann, Jeff Blake, Paul McMullen, Steve Hooper, John and Jillian Bauersfeld, George Wilkerson, Marc Parisi, and so many others that encouraged me, each in their own unique way, to continue to listen to God’s voice, though but still a whisper, drawing me to the seminary. Despite all of their support, I still felt a bit distant from the rest of my classmates in my decision. There was no one in my class that could sympathize fully with what I was feeling. God sent another bit of help one day through my guidance counselor, Mark Amatucci. When I first told him that I was considering entering the seminary, he pointed immediately to a picture above my head of one of the basketball teams he had coached decades before. One of those men, he noted, became a

Others Who Have Answered the Call

Above all, however, what about Calvert Hall drew me most to the priesthood were two simple, yet profound sayings of St. John Baptist de La Salle. These sayings are ones that students at The Hall and other Lasallian schools will say hundreds of times in their lives: “Let us remember that we are in the holy presence of God” and “Live Jesus in our hearts, forever.” These two prayers are reminders that God is always with us and that, as baptized Christians, he dwells deep within our very being. They instructed me then, and continue to remind me now, to always be attentive to the voice of God, which comes not in the violent wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but rather a still small voice, a gentle breeze (cf. 1 Kings 19:11-13). It is there, by the quiet movements of the Holy Spirit within our hearts, that he calls us, each of us. He calls us not only to the priesthood or religious life, but to family life, single life, and above all, to holiness. Ultimately, it is the task of every Catholic institution to instruct the souls entrusted to it to identify and respond generously to God’s call. Calvert Hall did just that for me and it is my prayer that it may continue that work for many, many more years to come.

Since the vocation of the Christian Brother is intertwined with the vocation of teaching, these teachers (and I could have listed many more) are the original promoters of my vocation to the Brothers.

W

hen I think back to my vocational journey to the Christian Brothers it is clear that Calvert Hall is the place where the first seeds of religious life were planted and nurtured. The teachers and campus ministry program were both instrumental in my personal development and my own spiritual journey. Calvert Hall has some amazing teachers that not only know their content and how to teach it, but also care deeply for their students. Br. Don Alger, Mr. Blake, Ms. Jones, and Mr. Hattrup were some of the great teachers I had and these individuals inspire me to this day. They are the reason I went into teaching and am joining the Brothers. Teaching different sub-

The other way Calvert Hall greatly influenced and encouraged my vocation is through the Campus Ministry program. The program exposed me to authentic Christian service, reflected true community, and normalized my Catholic faith. Faith is incorporated throughout the school - daily prayers, retreats, the mission of the school, community service, Lenten small groups, liturgy, and the steadfast presence of the Brothers. The campus ministry program did and still does a wonderful job of helping students feel comfortable with their faith while encouraging each student to grow and develop. I was and am able to stay true to my faith because of foundation that was laid by the Campus Ministers who journeyed with me. The Calvert Hall community continues to be an instrumental part in my discernment and vocation. I am continuously strengthened by the support of my former teachers, the Brothers, and classmates.
