HISTORY

Cal U student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2009-10 season, earning five PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and two NCAA regional trophies with nine team and 14 individual appearances in NCAA post-season play. The success has continued as Cal U finished second in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 205 Cal U student-athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-straight semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Cal U also featured 16 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections, highlighted by four Academic All-Americans. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, studentathletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletics and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible for the academic honor, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport. Cal U ranked sixth among the 16-member conference with 141 scholar-athletes. The football team led the Vulcans with 16 players earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete status.

In 10 years at Cal U, John

Luckhardt has led the charge in what has been the best run in the history of football at the school. Since taking over the program prior to the 2002 season, Luckhardt has led the Vulcans to three NCAA Regional Championships, two appearances in the PSAC Championship Game, three top-10 finishes and sixconsecutive PSAC West titles. Luckhardt has posted an astonishing 78-30 record (.722) with the Vulcans and is already the program’s all-time winningest coach. In addition to the 78 wins, some other notable accomplishments during his nine years with Cal U: only the second coach in PSAC history to direct three-straight teams to the NCAA Semifinals; only coach in Cal U history to post three-straight top-10 final rankings; only the second coach in Cal U history to beat Edinboro, IUP and Slippery Rock in the same season multiple times; only coach in Cal U history to guide the Vulcans to consecutive PSAC Championship appearances. Cal U’s success under Luckhardt has also extended into the classroom. In addition to 10 or more wins for the last four years, the Vulcans have had 33 PSAC Scholar-Athletes and six CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict selections. On the field, the Vulcans have produced several players who continued their football careers in the professional ranks. Last spring, four players worked out with NFL teams in mini-camps with cornerback Terrence Johnson signing with the New England Patriots and

wide receiver Dominique Curry inking with the St. Louis Rams. The Vulcans took a dominant leap as a national power in 2007. Luckhardt directed the Vulcans to a schoolrecord 13 wins, their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Playoffs, an NCAA Regional Championship and a perfect 11-0 regular season. That season, Cal U featured the top-ranked defense in NCAA Division II and scored the most points in school history. The Vulcans suffered their only loss of the season in the NCAA Semifinals, while playing on ESPNU at Adamson Stadium against eventual-National Champion Valdosta State. The success continued in 2008, as Luckhardt guided Cal U to another NCAA regional title and the program’s first PSAC Championship since 1987. The Vulcans again lost at home in the NCAA Semifinals on ESPN2 to eventual-National Champion Minnesota Duluth. The Vulcans completed the three-peat in 2009, as they won the NCAA regional crown for the third-straight year. Cal U appeared in the PSAC Championship for a consecutive season behind a record-setting passing attack. The Vulcans won three-straight NCAA post-season games before losing on the road to another eventual-National Champion, Northwest Missouri State. Building a college powerhouse is nothing new to Luckhardt, who built nearby Washington & Jefferson into a national contender in NCAA Division III. Over his 17 seasons with the Presidents, he

compiled a 137-37-2 record and guided W&J to 13 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) titles, 11 appearances in the NCAA Playoffs, five regional championships and two appearances in the Stagg Bowl, the Division III Championship Game. Luckhardt received the American Football Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 before being inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2007, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame Class at W&J, where he still holds the school record for most career wins at 137. Luckhardt and his wife, Barbara, reside in Peters Twp., Pa., and have two grown children, Allyson Eckenrode and Matt, and two grandchildren, Mathison Ava Eckenrode and Beatrice Alia Eckenrode. Allyson lives with husband Tim and daughters, Mattie and Reece, in Richmond, Va., and Matt works as an athletic fundraiser at Cal U.

KELLAR HIRED AS ASSOCIATE HC FOR OFFENSE Former California University of Pennsylvania offensive coordinator Mike Kellar returned to the Vulcans in 2011 as the new Associate Head Coach for Offense after a successful two-year head coaching stint at Concord (W.Va.). “Mike is known for his sophisticated and high-powered offenses and helped make Cal U into a national power,” said head coach John Luckhardt, who completed his ninth season with the program. “He turned the Concord program around in only two years and had it contending for a conference championship in 2010.” Kellar previously served as the Vulcans’ offensive coordinator from 2004-08 before guiding Concord to a 14-8 record and coaching 35 All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) selections over the last two seasons. Prior to his time at Concord, the Mountain Lions managed only one win in the previous two years and hadn’t had a winning season since 1998. In 2010, Kellar guided Concord to an 8-3 overall record to mark the first eight-win season for the program since it joined NCAA Division II in 1993. Under his guidance, the Mountain Lions featured one of the most balanced offenses in the WVIAC, ranking second in passing and total offense and third in scoring and rushing. Concord also ranked fourth in the country by averaging over 498 yards of offense per game. While with the Mountain Lions, Kellar mentored one of the most explosive wide receivers in the country in Thomas Mayo. A two-time All-WVIAC selection, Mayo set a school record and led the country in receiving yards per game in 2009. That season, he became the school’s first-ever Harlon Hill regional finalist and was Concord’s first All-American since 2002. Kellar will work with a Cal U offense that was among the best in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in 2010. The Vulcans averaged nearly 40 points and 400 yards of total offense behind the play of seven All-PSAC West players on offense. “Walt Harris will continue to be on staff as the offensive coordinator and will work with Mike Kellar to make Cal U one of the dominant offenses in the country,” said Luckhardt. While previously with the Vulcans, Kellar helped the program capture four-consecutive PSAC-West titles, a PSAC Championship, two NCAA Regional Championships and a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Lambert Trophies. A native of Shinnston, W.Va., Kellar originally attended Glenville State before transferring to Fairmont State where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1991. He started his coaching career at Fairmont State and served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for eight seasons before accepting the offensive coordinator position at Northern Michigan in 2002. Kellar and his wife Melissa have four children, Diedra, Jarrod, Anthony and Jacob.

PORTIS SELECTED TO NFL COMBINE Former California University of Pennsylvania quarterback Josh Portis participated in the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Feb. 24-27. Portis is the first player from the Vulcans to attend the NFL Combine. He was one of just 18 quarterbacks, and the only from NCAA Division II, invited to attend the annual event, which was attended by the top executives, coaching staffs and player personnel departments from all 32 NFL teams. In only two years at Cal U, Portis established himself among the best quarterbacks in program history. He finished his career ranked fourth in school history with 6,072 passing yards and set the all-time record with 69 touchdown passes. The 6-4 quarterback passed for 2,650 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2010. He also completed a career-best 61.2 percent (205-for-335) of his passes and led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with a passing efficiency of 156.0. Portis, a two-time All-PSAC West selection, received All-America Honorable Mention laurels from D2Football.com in February and was a regional finalist for the 2010 Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded annually to the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. Among the notable quarterbacks who also attended this year’s NFL Combine were Alabama’s Greg McElroy, Arkansas’ Ryan Mallet and Auburn’s Heisman Trophy-winner Cam Newton. Portis and Delaware quarterback Pat Devlin, a transfer from Penn State, were the only two quarterbacks from non-FBS programs invited to the event. Last year, there were 19 quarterbacks invited to the NFL Combine and 12 were selected within the seven rounds of the NFL Draft. The 2011 NFL Draft will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City from April 28-30 and will broadcast live on a variety of ESPN outlets and the NFL Network.

NEWS & NOTES

A LOOK BACK

For the second-straight season, California University of Pennsylvania senior offensive lineman Dan Jordan earned Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Third-Team All-America honors. The 6-3 offensive lineman started all 12 games for Cal U this past season, anchoring an offensive line that helped the Vulcans average nearly 40 points, 170 rushing yards and 400 yards of total offense per game. Jordan finished his career with 40 starts, including 27-straight over the last two seasons. This past November, Jordan was named both ESPN Academic All-District and All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West for the third-straight season. In total, the PSAC featured 11 players on the three All-America Teams, including National CoFreshman of the Year running back Franklyn Quiteh from Bloomsburg. This marks the 23rd year Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, a recognized authority on small college football, has selected an NCAA Division II All-America team. The California University of Pennsylvania football team had nine players selected to Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Super Region One Teams. The nine players tied Bloomsburg for the most in the four-conference region. The Vulcans had one player to the all-region first-team and three to the second-team, while five players garnered third-team honors. Senior punter Derek Fiorenza was selected to the Football Gazette all-region teams for a thirdstraight year. Junior linebacker Brett Diamond, senior offensive lineman Dan Jordan and senior quarterback Josh Portis each received the laurel for a consecutive season. J ordan represented Cal U on the all-region first-team after starting all 12 games this season on the offensive line. He anchored an offensive line that helped the Vulcans average nearly 40 points, 170 rushing yards and 400 yards of total offense per game. A Football Gazette All-American last year, Jordan made 40 career starts with 27 consecutive over the last two seasons. Senior defensive lineman Sam Fikaris, Fiorenza and junior defensive back Erik Harris were selected to the Football Gazette all-region second-team. Fikaris led all defensive linemen with 33 tackles (16 solo) and made a career-high 10.0 tackles for loss (TFL) and 4.5 sacks this season. Fiorenza, who also earned second-team laurels last year, ranked second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in 2010 with 39.6 yards per punt. Harris led the secondary with 61 tackles (33 solo) and tied his career high with three interceptions in his second year as a starter. Diamond, senior kicker Marc Domonkos, sophomore defensive back Rontez Miles, Portis and sophomore running back Lamont Smith all received third-team all-region accolades. Diamond equaled his career best and led the team with 64 tackles (29 solo) and added 9.0 TFL and 4.5 sacks. Domonkos finished with 91 points, which tied for the most in the PSAC by a kicker, after making 49-of-50 PAT attempts and 14-of-18 field goals. Miles made 60 stops (28 solo) and 12.0 TFL, both career highs, as a safety for the Vulcans. Portis led the conference in passing efficiency after throwing for 2,650 yards and 33 touchdowns, while completing 61.2 percent of his passes. Smith rushed for 1,166 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first year with the program. The Football Gazette began selecting NCAA Division II all-region teams in 2003, while honoring All-Americans since 1988. A total of 108 players representing 35 universities were honored on the 2010 All-Super Region One Teams.

CAMPBELL SELECTED TO EASTHAM ALL-STAR GAME California University of Pennsylvania senior defensive back Tommie Campbell was invited to play in the inaugural Eastham Energy All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 23, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. Campbell, who started at the Valero Cactus Bowl earlier in January, was one of eight players from NCAA Division II programs selected to the all-star game. He was listed as one of five cornerbacks on the roster for the Stripes, which were coached by former Kentucky head coach Hal Mumme. A 6-3 defensive back, Campbell played in all 12 games this season and posted 29 tackles (17 solo) and two interceptions – both in the NCAA Playoffs against Bloomsburg. The Aliquippa, Pa., native originally started his college career by playing linebacker and safety at Pitt. Campbell was the only player from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) selected to the Eastham Energy All-Star Game. He was joined on the Stripes roster by several notable players from NCAA Division I programs, including Mississippi quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, USC linebacker by Mike Morgan and TCU wide receiver Jimmy Young. The Stripes faced the Stars which were led by Joe Moglia, who was the CEO of TD Ameritrade and the executive advisor to Nebraska head football coach Bo Pelinni the last two seasons. The Stars roster featured West Virginia safety Sidney Glover, Minnesota quarterback Adam Weber and center Ryan Pugh, who started for BCS National Champion Auburn. The Eastham Energy All-Star Game was broadcasted live on FS Arizona, FS West, Fox Prime Ticket and Fox College Sports. The Stripes defeated the Stars, 40-34. Campbell registered one tackle and one assist in the loss.

CAMPBELL, MOORE PLAY IN CACTUS BOWL California University of Pennsylvania seniors Tommie Campbell and Terrance Moore both played in the Valero Cactus Bowl with the Blue Devils suffering a 28-6 loss to the Red Storm at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville. The game featured seven representatives from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with the majority of the conference’s players on the Blue Devils. The Red Storm took a 14-0 lead into halftime and expanded their lead to 21-0 midway through the third quarter. The Blue Devils then scored their only points in the final minute of the third quarter before the Red Storm sealed the win with a touchdown on the ensuing possession. Campbell started at cornerback and finished third on the Blue Devils with five tackles (three solo), while Moore was second on the team with four receptions for 25 yards. Central Missouri quarterback and Harlon Hill winner Eric Czerniewski (Red Storm) was named Offensive MVP after passing for 187 yards on 8-of-13 attempts with two touchdowns. Colorado School of Mines defensive lineman Marc Schiechl (Blue Devils) earned Defensive MVP laurels after making a game-high eight tackles (four solo) with 2.0 sacks. This year marked the Division II All-Star Game’s first season without the traditional East-West format, as the Cactus Bowl sought to select the top players at each position regardless of their region of the country. Since 2005, the Vulcans have had 12 players chosen for the game, now in its 17th year.

NEWS & NOTES CAL U RANKS NO. 14 IN FINAL AFCA POLL ABOUT CAL U A LOOK BACK ROSTER

For the fourth-straight season, the Vulcans finished the season ranked in the Top 15 of the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. After making its fourth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Playoffs, the California University of Pennsylvania football team finished the year ranked No. 14 in the country. The Vulcans continued their run of success by posting a 10-2 overall record and claiming a share of their sixth-consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title, the longest streak in divisional history. Over the last four seasons, Cal U has compiled an overall record of 46-9 (.836) with an incredible 26-1 mark (.963) in divisional play. Cal U is one of four PSAC teams to finish the season in the AFCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. Conference-champion Mercyhurst (10-3) was the highest PSAC team in the final poll at No. 11, while Kutztown (10-2) and Bloomsburg (10-3) ranked just ahead and behind the Vulcans at Nos. 13 and 15, respectively. Under ninth-year head coach John Luckhardt, Cal U opened the season ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll and moved up to school-best No. 3 ranking in mid-October. The Vulcans tied the school record by remaining in the AFCA poll for all 14 weeks this season; the only previous time they accomplished the feat was in 2007. In addition to the AFCA Top 25 poll, the NCAA announced the final statistics from the 2010 season. The Vulcans’ defense and several individuals were among the nation’s elite. Under the direction of defensive coordinator Mike Conway, Cal U finished the year second in NCAA Division II by yielding just 217.17 yards per game. The Vulcans also ranked fifth in the country in scoring defense (14.42 points), passing defense (138.75 yards) and tackles for loss (8.67 TFL). Individually, senior quarterback Josh Portis ranked No. 15 in the nation with a passing efficiency of 155.97 behind 33 touchdown passes and a 61.2 completion percentage. Sophomore running back Lamont Smith also was among the national leaders in rushing, finishing No. 24 with 106.00 yards per game. Cal U featured a dynamic special teams unit, as three individuals ranked among the best in NCAA Division II. Senior kicker Marc Domonkos tied for No. 19 in field goals with 1.17 per game (14-of-18), while kickoff return specialist Chedrick Cherry was tied at No. 23 with 25.40 yards per return. True freshman Trey Johnson was among the top punt returners in the country, averaging 12.12 yards per return.

VULCAN FOOTBALL HISTORY

22

Since head coach John Luckhardt took over the California University of Pennsylvania football program in 2002 the Vulcans have garnered national attention and have been a force to reckon with by winning multiple PSAC West titles and PSAC championships. Cal U has also made four straight appearances in the NCAA tournament, while capturing two NCAA regional titles along the way. Even though many think that the recent success of Vulcan football is a first that could not be more inaccurate as the rich tradition of Cal U football dates back over 110 years ago. The history of the Vulcan football program extends back to the turn of the 20th century. In 1898, the program transitioned from a club team to a varsity sport. Prior to this, the sport grew in popularity across the country and began to gain interest on campus. The interest shown at the club level provided reassurance that a varsity sport would be a successful program on campus. As the game evolved, so did the Vulcan football program. During the early years of the program, the Vulcan football team saw many changes and experienced numerous growing pains over the first quarter of the 20th century. Initially, it was believed that participating in collegiate football led to personal growth. The school’s administration and coaching staff stressed the importance of developing courage, determination, self-control, aggressiveness, self-reliance, obedience, quick decision-making, teamwork, and physical strength within these young men. Administration felt that the personal growth equated with participation in the program would produce better young men once they left the university. By 1925, Cal football had gained popularity and had become a source of pride for fans, and players alike. With the increase of popularity, the1930’s brought multiple firsts to the program. In the 1930 season, WMNM radio out of Fairmont, West Virginia broadcasted the game against Fairmont State in a play-by-play format to open the season. This broadcast opened new doors as a way to publicize the sport and help grow the popularity of Cal U football in region. Two years later, the Vulcan’s also played in their first ever night game. The opportunity to play under the lights sparked an interest not only on campus, but also within the surrounding communities. Night games such as these evolved into a community event. Like most other events during the 1940’s, World War II took precedence over just about everything and Cal U football was no different. During the war, due to the lack of male students, football was not played and put on hold until 1946. When football resumed in 46’, the Vulcans produced their most successful year in school history to date. Many people touted the Vulcans as one of top-16 teams in country as they went undefeated. This success carried into and through the 1950’s, as this was one of the most successful eras of Cal U football. This period also brought in the first thoughts of weight training and out-of-season workouts and practices. Even though there was no regularity to these workouts and practices, coaches and student athletes alike began to see the advantages. Then in 1958, California produced the only undefeated team in the state and country, making them one of the nation’s elite teams. The 1960’s became a progressive time within the sport. Team rosters were increasing in size, out of season workouts and practices were becoming more structured, and dedication to the sport was becoming necessary if the student athlete wanted to be successful. In addition to things changing on the field, multiple changes took place off the field. The program added additional coaches to their staff that focused on teaching certain positions, academic requirements were instituted, and transfers from other high profile universities such as Maryland, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt were accepted to compete for the Vulcans. Cal U was able to capitalize on these changes as they captured the 1968 PSAC championship, where they tied East Stroudsburg. As Cal U and the rest of the country transitioned into the 1970’s, the Vietnam War affected the football program. Many individuals looked at football as a form of violence and resented it; therefore, not receiving the support it once did from fans and administration. Focus was also taken off of the program from the university administration, which allowed the student-athletes to take more time for their social life. This decrease in dedication to the sport outside of the normal season practices and schedules resulted in some heartfelt seasons as the Vulcan program struggled to make tallies in the win column. This change along with the lack of awarded scholarship dollars to the student athletes translated into just 18 wins over an eight-year period. However, as the War passed, the football program came back into focus. One bright spot of the 1970’s was the completion of Adamson Stadium. The new facility provided a place for the program to move to the next level. In addition to Adamson Stadium, university administration was once again showed its support to the program; by hiring its first full-time head coach in Hal Hunter. In what most call the modern era of the game (1980’s forward), the Vulcan program began to take the shape that we currently know. A classroom in Hamer Hall was converted to an office for the sole purpose of football operations and shortly after that, former standout quarterback, Jeff Petrucci took over the program and Cal U started regain the prestige that it had lost previously. Petrucci implemented a regimented weighttraining program, out of season workouts, and an unseen dedication to the program that translated into capturing the 1984 PSAC championship. The newly found out of season dedication to the program produced some great players that consisted of 1st Team All-Conference selections such as Bill Seidel, Dave Diesel, Ken Wysocki, Arthur Motton, and Perry Kemp who was also an AP All-American that went on to play for the Green bay Packers. During the 1990’s, the Vulcans experienced up and down success, however, many individual greats graced the field at Adamson stadium. Wideout Vic Shandor was a first team All-Conference selection in 1992 and In 1993 wide receiver Ken Cahoon picked up where Shandor left off by being selected as a st Team All-PSAC and Northeast Region selection. The 1997 squad featured defensive tackle Jon Bolen who received Honorable Mention All-American honors and in 1999, Jason Gross and Wesley Cates notched All Conference honors. The 2000’s have brought the Vulcan football program its highest points. Since Coach Luckhardt arrived, the Cal U football program has arguably been the best team in the PSAC. Compiling a 78-32 record since 2002, the Vulcans have featured seven AllAmericans including the likes of Antoine Bagwell, Tim McCutcheon, Tyler Lorenz, Kirby Griffin, Gary Butler, Jace Amore, and Terrence

ABOUT CAL U

Johnson. In 2007, the Vulcans made their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament and advanced to the National Semi Final before losing to the eventual National Champion Valdosta State (Ga.). In 2008 and 2009, the Vulcans found themselves in similar situations by making it the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament and losing to the eventual National Champion. The combination of tremendous student-athletes and a coaching staff that will not settle for anything but the best has a resulted in one of the most exciting times in Vulcan football. With hopes of not only earning a PSAC championship every year, but also knowing that Cal U football will be one of the nations elite generates enthusiasm across the campus. Over the years, numerous Vulcan football alums have had success after their years at Adamson Stadium. The latest to experience success at the next level is former wide receiver and special teams standout, Dominique Curry. This past season, Curry signed with the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League. In addition to Curry, former All-American defensive back Terrence Johnson also gained continued his career on the gridiron by participating in the New England Patriots pre-season camp and then later being signed to the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. This spring, Josh Portis was the first ever Vulcan selected to compete at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. In just two year at Cal U, Portis established himself, as an elite quarterback will look to take his talents to the next level in the NFL. Gary Butler a 2007 graduate and Kevin McCabe ‘08’ will also be competing this spring on the areas newest professional football team, The Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League that will play in the new Consol Energy Center. After a stellar two years at Cal U finishing in 2005, Antoine Bagwell has also been pursuing dreams of playing in the NFL. After being signed as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis in 2006, he is still trying to land his opportunity at playing in the pros. Wes Cates has also continued his prolific career after his days in a Vulcan uniform. Currently playing in the Canadian Football League, he has amassed over 4,200 rushing yards, 39 touchdowns, while averaging 5.4 yards a carry. At Cal U, Cates was a two-time All-American and Cal U Hall of Fame inductee. Going back in time, it is great to know that our football program has produced so many great young men. From Bob Brooks and Bill Booker who are still actively involved in the program today. To former Green Bay Packer Perry Kemp or Brian Oddi who played in the CFL and is now the Director of Athletic Performance at Cal U, the Vulcan tradition is living stronger than ever.

GENERAL

I have often heard people say “life comes and goes.” As I have grown older and look back, time seems to have gone by “ rather quickly. When I was a young boy, I couldn’t wait to grow up. I wanted everything to happen “now.” I couldn’t wait to drive, to graduate from high school, go to college, play football, get drafted in the NFL, get married, have children... things couldn’t happen fast enough. Oddly enough, I soon discovered that I wanted this process to slow down... just a bit. The years were going by faster than I wanted. I know now, after having faced and survived prostate cancer that as our lives continue moving forward, ever so gracefully, it brings both wonder and excitement and times so difficult that we are shaken to the core. It is those very times that mold us and cause us to become better people. It is easy to become discouraged and want to give up, but we don’t. We reach in, dig deep, further than we ever realized was possible and we find the strength to overcome. Learning to overcome our challenges is what makes up the fabric of our lives, so that it resembles a beautiful quilt. Every day of our lives, good or bad, represents a square of that quilt, some bright and colorful, some dark and dismal... yet they are all connected together to tell our story. I have learned that we are not alone when it comes to facing difficult times. I know that God never gives us more than we can handle. There are human beings in place to help us, but, also – and more importantly to me – there is spiritual help. We must strive to be aware of what is happening in these unique, miraculous bodies that God has created. There are no two of us alike. We are different heights and weights, colors and backgrounds. But, we are all men and we face our own unique challenge. We get prostate cancer. It does not discriminate. It strikes us in the prime of our lives, silently... and can be deadly. It steals husbands, fathers, brothers and sons. But the very, very bright side is that early detection can save these lives. A simple rectal exam and PSA blood test is all that is needed. Be diligent and get educated. That is what saved my life, the lives of four of my brothers, and countless other men. Please join me in this fight. May God bless us all.” - Robin Cole, Survivor-Found-Director

HISTORY

Proceeds from today’s game will benefit the Obediah Cole Foundation. T he Obediah Cole Foundation, founded in 2006 by Robin Cole, former NFL All-Pro linebacker, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is dedicated to prostate cancer education, awareness and early detection. The Obediah Cole Foundation provides information about prostate cancer, which affects 230,000 men a year. The foundation is aimed at spreading awareness of, and raising funds to fight, prostate cancer. Their goal is to alert and screen every man in the Pittsburgh area, particularly the underserved and underinsured populations. Cole was born in Compton, Calif., on Sept. 11, 1955. A former NFL All-Pro linebacker, he is an entrepreneur and dynamic speaker and motivator. After watching their father and uncle die from undiagnosed prostate cancer, three of Robin’s brothers were diagnosed with the disease. Robin realized his chances of developing cancer were increased, but did not know he already had it. In September 2004, a routine physical revealed a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test score of 3. Although not considered high, he underwent a prostate biopsy. He had cancer. Getting tested at the right time saved his life. He was 49 – the same age his father lost his fight with the disease. He underwent surgery and remains cancer-free today. He is a healthy husband, father and grandfather. His mission is to make a difference in men’s lives by educating them in the importance of physical exams and PSA testing.

Mickey Sahady

A 1962 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, Michael Sahady has established himself as one of the most successful people to ever put on a Vulcan uniform. From his days on the field where he was known as a hard-hitting defensive back to a thriving career as a medical executive, Sahady has always found a way to get the job done. After his graduation from Cal U and dreams of pursuing a career in education, Sahady went in a different direction and found himself working in the medical field. In 1976, he branched out on his own and founded MedSurg Industries. There he developed a system for computerized quoting and inventory management systems, which he is recognized for being a pioneer in the industry. In the beginning, he was forced to make hard decisions to assure his company’s success. One of those decisions was to demonstrate selfless leadership. As times were tough initially, there were occasions that Sahady had to forego his personal pay to ensure that his employees received their paychecks and benefits. This selfless well-being and personal sacrifices is what led to the ultimate success of MedSurg and his career as a top-notch medical executive. Today, Sahady is still actively involved in the medical profession as he serves on the Board of Directors for Medical Action as a Class II director. This latest accomplishment comes after he served as CEO and Chairman of the Board for AVID Medical. As the founder of AVID, he grew the company that occupied a 180,00-square foot building and become one of the Top 10 employers in James City County, Virginia.

ABOUT CAL U

Cal U’s all-time leading rusher, Wesley Cates is one of only six running backs in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single-season. As a backup tailback in 1998, Cates gained 424 rushing yards with five touchdowns and averaged 4.6 yards per carry. The following year, Cates’ sophomore season became one for the school and conference record books as he rushed for 1,935 yards on 298 attempts with 23 touchdowns. Cates became Cal U’s first running back to gain more than 1,000 rushing yards since 1995 Hall of Fame inductee Elmo Natali ran for 1,035 yards in 1951. His rushing attempts and yardage from that season are still single-season school records and the rushing yards total is fifth best in PSAC history. Cates concluded his brilliant career by gaining 1,615 yards with 14 scores in 2000 and 1,673 yards with 23 touchdowns (1 receiving) in 2001. His explosive running helped the 2001 Vulcans record the Wesley Cates school’s best overall record (5-5) in 14 years. After his storied career with the Vulcans, Cates still ranks second in PSAC history in rushing yards (5,647) and touchdowns (63) and is third all-time in overall touchdowns (64) and points scored (386). On top of that, he holds the fifth, 13th and 17th highest single-season rushing totals in the history of the conference. A three-time, first-team all-conference selection, he was named the 2001 PSAC West Player of the Year and was a 1999 and 2001 All-American. In 2006, Cates received the highest athletic honor from Cal U, as he was elected to the Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2004, Cates played for the Tri-City Diesel of the National Indoor Football League and was the league’s second-leading rusher and scorer with 1,050 yards and 36 touchdowns. In 2006, he signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL), for whom he played one season. Cates was traded to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2007 and helped his team win the Grey Cup, the league’s equivalent of the Super Bowl. During his five year CFL career, Cates has rushed for more than 1,000 yards twice (2008, 2010) and compiled 39 touchdowns while rushing for 4,262 yards on 792 carries. In addition, the 6-0 running back has made more than 40 receptions and amassed more than 400 receiving yards twice in a season. For his career, he has accumulated 1,880 receiving yards on 180 receptions. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Cates played scholastic football at Westerville North High School. After playing at several offensive skill and defensive positions for three seasons, Cates moved primarily to running back his senior year and gained over 1,400 rushing yards while receiving second-team all-state honors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Cal U in May 2002 before beginning his career in professional football.
