JAMES ADAMSON STADIUM Adamson Stadium is the University’s home for the football and track & field teams. The stadium, which was renovated in the 1990s, has an eight-lane, all-weather track that was renovated in 2002 (including runways), a two-level press box that can accommodate radio and television broadcasts, two large varsity locker rooms, two sets of public restrooms, concession stand, scoreboard with message board capabilities, ticket booths, training room and an equipment room. Just outside Adamson Stadium is the area for the throwing events (javelin, discus, shot put and hammer). The stadium, as well as the surrounding Roadman Park, are undergoing renovations. The former baseball field, adjacent to Adamson Stadium, has been replaced with a larger parking lot that spans the entire ‘home side’ of the stadium. Before the start of the 2009 season, a WaveCam was installed for permanent use at Adamson Stadium, as well as a color video board. Cal U is the first university in the United States to own its own WaveCam.

In 10 years at Cal U, John Luckhardt
has led the charge in what has been the best run in the history of football at the school. Since taking over the program prior to the 2002 season, Luckhardt has led the Vulcans to three NCAA Regional Championships, two appearances in the PSAC Championship Game, three top-10 finishes and seven-consecutive PSAC West titles. Luckhardt has posted an astonishing 88-33 record (.727) with the Vulcans and is already the program’s all-time winningest coach. In addition to the 88 wins, some other notable accomplishments during his decade with Cal U: only the second coach in PSAC history to direct threestraight teams to the NCAA Semifinals; only coach in Cal U history to post three-straight top-10 final rankings; only the second coach in Cal U history to beat Edinboro, IUP and Slippery Rock in the same season multiple times; only coach in Cal U history to guide the Vulcans to consecutive PSAC Championship appearances. Cal U’s success under Luckhardt has also extended into the classroom. In addition to 10 or more wins in the last five years, the Vulcans have had 68 PSAC Scholar-Athletes and seven CoSIDA Academic All-District selections. On the field, the Vulcans have produced several players who continued their football careers in the professional ranks. In 2011, four players were on active rosters with NFL teams throughout the season with Terrence Johnson becoming the first Cal U player to start a game on Monday Night Football. Last spring, defensive back Tommie Campbell was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. The Vulcans took a dominant leap as a national power in 2007. Luckhardt directed the Vulcans to a school-record 13 wins, their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Playoffs, an NCAA Regional
Championship and a perfect 11-0 regular season. That season, Cal U featured the top-ranked defense in NCAA Division II and set the then-school record for most points. The Vulcans suffered their only loss of the season in the NCAA Semifinals, while playing on ESPNU at Adamson Stadium against eventual-National Champion Valdosta State. The success continued in 2008, as Luckhardt guided Cal U to another NCAA regional title and the program’s first PSAC Championship since 1984. The Vulcans again lost at home in the NCAA Semifinals on ESPN2 to eventual-National Champion Minnesota Duluth. The Vulcans completed the threepeat in 2009, as they won the NCAA regional crown for the third-straight year. Cal U appeared in the PSAC Championship for a consecutive season behind a record-setting passing attack. The Vulcans won three-straight NCAA post-season games before losing on the road to another eventual-National Champion, Northwest Missouri State. Building a college powerhouse is nothing new to Luckhardt, who built nearby Washington & Jefferson into a national contender in NCAA Division III. Over his 17 seasons with the Presidents, he compiled a 13737-2 record and guided W&J to 13 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) titles, 11 appearances in the NCAA Playoffs, five regional championships and two appearances in the Stagg Bowl, the Division III Championship Game. Luckhardt received the American Football Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 before being inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2007, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at W&J, where he still holds the school record for most career wins
at 137. Luckhardt and his wife, Barbara, reside in Peters Twp., Pa., and have two grown children, Allyson Eckenrode and Matt, and two grandchildren, Mathison Ava Eckenrode and Beatrice Alia Eckenrode. Allyson lives with husband Tim and daughters, Mattie and Reece, in Richmond, Va., and Matt works as an athletic fundraiser at Cal U and lives with his wife Susan.

NEWS & NOTES VULCANS FEATURE OVER 30 NFL REPS AT PRO DAY The Cal U football program welcomed representatives from 22 NFL teams and one CFL team to Adamson Stadium on March 13, as nearly two dozen players from Pennsylvania schools participated in Pro Day. The Vulcans had 11 seniors participate at the annual Pro Day: defensive backs Shawn Anderson, Erik Harris, James Nixon and Patrick Swearinger; defensive linemen Marcus Cook, Kevin Crawford, Thomas Mulabah and Steve Santia; offensive lineman Rishaw Johnson; and wide receivers Chedrick Cherry and Thomas Mayo. Cal U also welcomed nine additional players from across the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schools and a pair of FCS players to Adamson Stadium: defensive backs Herschel Thornton (East Stroudsburg) and Gary Tillman (Millersville); defensive linemen Randy Colling (Gannon) and Keir Jeter (Edinboro); linebacker Ian Wild (Mercyhurst); offensive linemen Daryl Kurtz (Bloomsburg) and Rob Stoner (Edinboro); quarterback Chris Lum (Lehigh); tight end Kevin Doty (Lafayette); and wide receivers David Bostic (Edinboro) and Trevor Kennedy (Mercyhurst). The players were tested in a variety of drills conducted at the NFL Combine, such as the 40-yard dash, vertical jump and three-cone drill, and also participated in position work. The following teams attended Pro Day at Adamson Stadium: Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, New York Giants, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans and the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL. The 2012 NFL Draft is held at Radio City Music Hall in New York, N.Y., this weekend, April 26-28, and broadcasts live on a variety of ESPN outlets and the NFL Network. Over the last two years, three players from the PSAC have been selected in the NFL Draft with former Cal U defensive back Tommie Campbell being selected last season in the seventh round by the Tennessee Titans.
JOHNSON INVITED TO NFL COMBINE The Cal U football team was represented at the NFL Combine for the second-straight year, as former offensive lineman Rishaw Johnson was invited to participate at the week-long event at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., from Feb. 22-28. Johnson joined quarterback Josh Portis (2009-10) as the only two players in school history to attend the NFL Combine. Johnson was one of only five players from non-FBS programs invited to attend the annual event, which is attended by the top executives, coaching staffs and player personnel departments from all 32 NFL teams. After previously playing at Ole Miss, Johnson established himself as a dominant offensive lineman at the NCAA Division II level. He started 12 games at right guard in 2011 and was selected as one of the team’s captains. A 6-5, 310-pound senior, Johnson was named a D2Football.com First-Team All-American and received All-America Honorable Mention from Don Hansen. In January, he was chosen to participate in both the East-West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl against the top seniors from across the country. Johnson was one of 55 offensive linemen, including 17 guards, scheduled to work out at the NFL Combine. Among the notable offensive linemen that attended this year’s NFL Combine were USC’s Matt Kalil, Stanford’s David DeCastro and Michigan’s Rimington Trophy-winner David Molk. Johnson and Midwestern State tackle Amini Silatolu were the only two linemen from non-FBS programs invited to the event.

NEWS & NOTES JOHNSON, MAYO SELECTED TO EAST-WEST SHRINE GAME® Cal U seniors Rishaw Johnson and Thomas Mayo were selected to participate in the East-West Shrine Game® in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Jan. 28. The 87th-annual East-West Shrine Game® benefited the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in the United States, Canada and Mexico. After previously playing at Ole Miss, Johnson quickly established himself as a dominant offensive lineman at the NCAA Division II level. The 6-5, 310-pound senior started 12 games at right guard last year and was selected one of the team’s captain. He was named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West First-Team and received allregion laurels from Daktronics and Don Hansen. Johnson was one of 10 offensive linemen (four guards) selected to represent the East at Tropicana Field. In only one year with the program, Mayo registered one of the most prolific seasons for a wide receiver in school history. He ranked second in NCAA Division II with 16 touchdown receptions, while ranking fourth in the country with 1,359 yards on 79 catches. The 6-2, 200-pound wide receiver was selected an Associated Press (AP) and Daktronics All-American after finishing his career ranked 11th in NCAA Division II history with over 4,000 receiving yards. Mayo was one of eight wide receivers chosen to play for the East. Johnson and Mayo were two of only four players from NCAA Division II programs invited to participate in the East-West Shrine Game®. There are 246 former Shrine Game players currently in the NFL, 62 East-West alumni are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and 44 players from last year’s game were selected in the 2011 NFL Draft. Former San Diego Chargers head coach Bobby Ross led the East, while former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress guided the West.
SIX SENIORS SELECTED TO DON HANSEN BOWL Six senior standouts from the Cal U football team participated in the Don Hansen Bowl on Jan. 14 in Virginia Beach, Va. Senior defensive linemen Kevin Crawford, Thomas Mulabah and Steve Santia, along with senior defensive backs Erik Harris and James Nixon and senior wide receiver Chedrick Cherry were invited to the event. The game was played at Sportsplex Stadium, which features an artificial surface and a 6,000-seating capacity. The trio of Crawford, Mulabah and Santia helped anchor one of the nation’s top rushing defenses in 2011, as the Vulcans allowed only 101.2 yards/game. Crawford finished with 37 tackles (17 solo), 9.0 tackles for loss (TFL) and 5.5 sacks in his second year as the starter. Mulabah posted a banner senior campaign, breaking the all-time school record for TFL after leading the team with 7.0 sacks and 15.5 TFL. Santia finished with 37 stops (19 solo), 10.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks and one interception after starting all 13 games. Harris tied for fourth on the team with 71 tackles (37 solo) and ranked second on the team with three interceptions. He also registered 8.5 TFL, 3.0 sacks and seven passes defended as a senior. Nixon, who played the previous three seasons at Temple, posted 14 stops (eight solo) while playing 12 games with two starts. Cherry ranked second on the team in receiving this season, posting 716 yards and five touchdowns on 55 catches. He finished his career tied for second in school history with 22 receiving touchdowns and was one of only six players in school history to total 2,000 receiving yards. The game is named after Don Hansen, who passed away in 2010 and was a pioneer of national media coverage of small college football.

SEVEN-TIME PSAC WEST CHAMPS • THREE-TIME SUPER REGION ONE CHAMPS • THREE-TIME ECAC LAMBERT TROPHY • THREE-TIME NCAA D-II SEMIFINALIST
VULCAN FOOTBALL HISTORY S
ince head coach John Luckhardt took over the California University of Pennsylvania football program in 2002, the Vulcans have garnered national attention and have been a force to reckon with by winning multiple PSAC West titles and NCAA regional championships. Cal U has also made fourstraight appearances in the NCAA Playoffs, while capturing three NCAA regional titles along the way. Even though many think that the recent success of Vulcan football is a first, that could not be more inaccurate as the rich tradition of Cal U football dates back over 110 years. The history of the Vulcan football program extends back to the turn of the 20th century. In 1898, the program transitioned from a club team to a varsity sport. Prior to this, the sport grew in popularity across the country and began to gain interest on campus. The interest shown at the club level provided reassurance that a varsity sport would be a successful program on campus. As the game evolved, so did the Vulcan football program. During the early years of the program, the Vulcans saw many changes and experienced numerous growing pains over the first quarter of the 20th century. Initially, it was believed that participating in collegiate football led to personal growth. The school’s administration and coaching staff stressed the importance of developing courage, determination, self-control, aggressiveness, self-reliance, obedience, quick decision-making, teamwork and physical strength within these young men. The administration felt that the personal growth equated with participation in the program would produce better young men once they left the university. By 1925, Cal football had gained popularity and had become a source of pride for fans, and players alike. With the increase of popularity, the 1930’s brought multiple firsts to the program. In the 1930 season, WMNM radio out of Fairmont, W.Va., broadcasted the game against Fairmont State in a play-by-play format to open the season. This broadcast opened new doors as a way to publicize the sport and help grow the popularity of Cal U football in the region. Two years later, the Vulcans also played in their first night game. The opportunity to play under the lights sparked an interest not only on campus, but also within the surrounding communities. Night games such as these evolved into a community event. Like most other events during the 1940’s, World War II took precedence over just about

everything and Cal U football was no different. Due to the lack of male students during the war, football was not played and put on hold until 1946. When football resumed in ‘46, the Vulcans produced their most successful year in school history to date. Many people touted the Vulcans as one of the top-16 teams in country as they went undefeated. Then in 1958, California produced the only undefeated team in the state and country, making them one of the nation’s elite teams. The 1960’s became a progressive time within the sport. Team rosters were increasing in size, outof-season workouts and practices were becoming more structured and dedication to the sport was becoming necessary if the student-athlete wanted to be successful. spring of 2011 with the area’s newest professional football team, the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League. After a stellar two years at Cal U, finishing in 2005, Antoine Bagwell was signed as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis Rams in 2006. Wesley Cates, the all-time leading rusher and scorer in school history, also continued his career after his days in a Vulcan uniform. In six years playing in the Canadian Football League, he amassed nearly 5,000 rushing yards and over 40 touchdowns. At Cal U, Cates was a two-time All-American and Cal U Hall of Fame inductee. Going back in time, it is great to know that the football program has produced so many great young men. From Bob Brooks and Bill Booker, who are still actively involved in the program today, to former Green Bay Packer Perry Kemp to Terrence Johnson, the Vulcan tradition is living stronger than ever.

alums have had success after their years at Adamson Stadium. The latest to experience success at the next level is former wide receiver and special teams standout, Dominique Curry. In 2010, Curry signed with the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League. In addition to Curry, former All-American defensive back Terrence Johnson also continued his career on the gridiron by participating in preseason camp with the New England Patriots and then later being signed to the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts. In the spring of 2011, Josh Portis was the first Vulcan selected to compete at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Ind. In just two seasons at Cal U, Portis established himself, as an elite quarterback by setting the all-time school record for touchdown passes. Gary Butler (2004-07) and Kevin McCabe (2008) also competed in the

Wesley Cates notched all-conference honors. The 2000’s have brought the Vulcan football program its highest points. Since Luckhardt arrived, the Cal U football program has been arguably the best team in the PSAC. Compiling a 88-33 record since 2002, the Vulcans have featured several All-Americans including Antoine Bagwell, Kirby Griffin, A.J. Jackson, Terrence Johnson, Tim McCutcheon, Rontez Miles and Willie Walker. In 2007, the Vulcans made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA postseason and advanced to the National Semifinals before losing to the eventualNational Champion Valdosta State (Ga.). In 2008 and 2009, the Vulcans found themselves in similar situations by making it to the semifinals of the NCAA Playoffs and losing to the eventual-National Champion. The combination of tremendous student-athletes and a coaching staff that will not settle for anything but the best has a resulted in one of the most exciting times in Vulcan football. With hopes of not only earning a PSAC Championship every year, but also knowing that Cal U football will be one of the nation’s elite generates enthusiasm across the campus. Over the years, numerous Vulcan football

Bill Lee
Recruited from Charleroi High School, William Lee became one of the top quarterbacks in the history of the football program at California University. In the fall of 2011, he became the first quarterback in 10 years to receive induction into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame. Lee was the starting quarterback from the end of his 1963 freshman season into 1966. He guided the Vulcans to a 21-14 victory over Edinboro in his first collegiate start, the season finale of 1963. Two years later the Vulcans and innovative head coach Bill Hepner ranked among the nation’s top 10 in passing offense, and the 1965 team produced the program’s eighth winning season in nine years. During his 1966 senior season Lee passed for 367 yards, then a school record, and he earned PSAC Player of the Week honors in a 27-20 home victory over Lock Haven. The previous school record was 353 passing yards and stood for 13 years. At that time Lee ranked second in total offense among all NAIA players but suffered a season-ending separated shoulder the following week at Waynesburg. He was replaced at quarterback that season by Cal U Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Petrucci. Lee’s primary receiver was another Hall of Fame inductee, Ettore Perri, who scored 27 career touchdowns, another school standard at that time. Cal won four of five divisional games in 1966 and finished second in the PSAC West. In all, the Vulcans achieved three divisional winning seasons during Lee’s collegiate career. Originally from Charleroi, Lee is a 1963 graduate of Charleroi High School. He was an all-conference quarterback under legendary coach Rab Currie and helped the 1962 squad win the section title with a final 8-1-1 overall record. Lee was also a pitcher for the Cougars’ baseball team. His father, the late Frank J. Lee, played football and basketball at Cal and later was an assistant coach under Currie. During his undergraduate days, Lee became a PIAA licensed football official. After earning his bachelor’s degree in social studies and economics in 1967, he taught and coached football for nearly two years at Monongahela High School. Lee then decided to leave the education field and explore the pharmaceutical sales industry where he spent the next 13 years. Lee then made one final career move when he joined his cousin’s business, Lee Supply Co. Here he spent the next 30 years as the company’s environmental sales manager. In 2009, Lee was inducted into the Solid Waste Association of North America’s “Hall of Fame”. He resides in Speers, Pa., with his wife, Mary Lou. The couple has three grown children - Billy, Michelle Schwerha and Michael.

Terry O’Shea
COACHING STAFF
A native of Pittsburgh, Terry O’Shea not only made a name for himself on the gridiron, but he also developed into one of Western Pennsylvania’s premier businessmen. After graduating from Seton LaSalle High School, he was a dynamic player for the Vulcans and was inducted as a member of the second-ever Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame class in 1996. At 6-4 and 235 pounds, O’Shea became one of the top tight ends in the country and became the standard by which tight ends are measured at California. By redshirting in 1984, he was able to have a first-hand view of Cal U winning the first outright PSAC title in program history (The Vulcans previously finished tied with East Stroudsburg in the 1968 PSAC Championship Game). A three-year starter from 1986-88, O’Shea earned All-PSAC First-Team laurels each year. During his senior season, O’Shea ranked fifth in the PSAC with 42 receptions for 553 yards and three touchdowns. In 1988, he earned All-America honors from the Associated Press and was also named a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded annually to the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. The 6-4 tight end finished his collegiate career with 123 receptions for 1,429 yards and six touchdowns. Following his senior season with the Vulcans, O’Shea attended a free-agent tryout and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. As a rookie in 1989, he played in all 16 games with two starts and helped the Steelers advance to the divisional round of the AFC Playoffs. O’Shea also played in every game during the 1990 season with Pittsburgh before playing with the Barcelona Dragons of the World Football League. Today, O’Shea resides in Greensburg, Pa., where he is the owner of Gatoenterprises.com. The company specializes in offering exclusive products from the industry leaders in online health and beauty markets. Gatoenterprises also has developed relationships with national brands such as Dell and Disney.
