Following its lowest win total in nearly a decade, the Vulcans appear poised to bounce back with a 30-win season. Led by 17th-year head coach Mike Conte, Cal U features a veteran lineup and a deep pitching staff that should allow the program to reach the post-season. Senior standout Kyle Petty returns after being one of the most versatile players in the country in 2012. He received a plethora of accolades, highlighted by being a Tino Martinez Award Semifinalist. Petty started games at five different positions last year and finished as the team’s leader in batting average, wins and innings pitched. The New Jersey native looks to shift back to catcher and serve as a relief pitcher in 2013 after serving both roles as a freshman and sophomore. The infield will be anchored by a pair of returning starters in senior first baseman A.J. Robinson and sophomore shortstop Matt Peters. In his first year with the program, Robinson led the team with 30 RBI. Peters ranked second on the team in batting average and also received Gold Glove allregion status for his prowess in the field. Juniors Giovanni Morales and Derrik Zeroski will open the spring as probable starters in the infield. Morales looks to see the majority of time at second base after playing in 50 games in his career and Zeroski will start the year at third base after playing two seasons at Duquesne. Newcomers Chad Crockett and Kyle Mann, both transfers, provide depth and can play multiple positions in the infield. After playing the last two seasons at the corners, junior Ben Carson will shift to center field in 2013. He has batted over .300 in each of the last two years and finished last season ranked among the league leaders with a team-best 23 steals. Junior Chuck Gasti will be a regular in right field after playing last season primarily at third base. He led the team with four homers and 34 runs scored following a transfer from Cleveland State. Freshman Mick Fennell looks to be a regular in the outfield following a standout scholastic career at Butler. Junior John Orr, along with transfers Chris Mitko and

Zak Schmidt, provide tremendous speed and depth to the outfield. Freshman David Marcus will be the team’s primary designated hitter following an impressive fall. Sophomore Will Kaufman figures to see significant time at catcher during weekend conference play. Even with the move of Petty to the bullpen, the Vulcans return three conference starters from last season. Senior Kyle Thomas is the most veteran pitcher on the staff with 23 starts over the last two seasons. He totaled a career-high 71.0 innings as a junior while earning Gold Glove all-region laurels. Sophomores G.J. Senchak and Justin Taylor both tossed over 50 innings last year and figure to open the spring as the day-one starters in league doubleheaders. Senchak, who earned five wins, boasted a team-best 1.97 ERA in conference play last season. Taylor ranked second on the team in both ERA and strikeouts as a true freshman. The remainder of the conference rotation looks to be filled by Cory Craig, Jack Dennis and Fennell - all freshmen. Craig joins the program after twice earning region Pitcher of the Year honors in high school and Fennell was an all-section pitcher at Butler. Dennis joins the program after playing scholastically in Toronto. In addition to Petty, the bullpen features tremendous depth with middle relievers as well as other possible closers. Petty registered three saves in each of his first two seasons and averages over a strikeout per inning as a reliever. With Petty possibly staying at catcher late in games, junior transfer Adam Mylant looks to see time in the final innings as a closer. Senior Eric Francis missed most of last season due to injury and figures to be one of the most consistent relievers. Sophomore Luke Burton and newcomer Mann provide additional middle relief depth. With a veteran lineup and talented pitching staff, the Vulcans are poised to challenge for one of the top spots in the PSAC West standings and compete in post-season play.

A veteran of 19 seasons with the Cal U baseball program, Mike Conte has continued the tradition of the Vulcans as one of the most successful and stable teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Entering his 17th year as head coach, Conte has totaled 450 wins for an average of over 28 victories per season. While in the dugout, he has guided the Vulcans to six PSAC Western Division titles and 12 PSAC Tournament appearances with conference crowns in 2004 and 2010. In 2010, Cal U captured the PSAC title in walk-off fashion and made its fifth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the season with a 34-18 overall record. Conte also earned PSAC West Coach of the Year laurels for the sixth time in his career. In 2007, Conte guided the Vulcans to a school-record 36 wins, a fourthstraight divisional title, a second-place finish in the PSAC Tournament and the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament appearance since 1983. Conte led Cal U to four-straight PSAC West championships from 200407 with the first PSAC Championship in 25 years. The championship team of 2004 featured two-time Academic All-American and PSAC West Player of the Year Mike Larson. Larson was an all-conference outfielder/pitcher after leading the team in average, homers, RBI and ERA. The Vulcans won back-to-back PSAC West titles in 2001 and 2002 after posting a then-school record
16 conference wins. Outfielder Bryan Hartung was an all-conference player on the 2001 team before finishing his career as the school’s all-time leader in homers and RBI. Hartung became the first Conte-coached player inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. During his 16 seasons as head coach, Conte has coached 95 All-PSAC West players, five PSAC West Athletes of the Year and three ABCA AllAmericans. In addition to successful players on the diamond, he also has coached the only Academic AllAmerican in program history and the only two players to receive the academic Top 10 Award from PSAC. Since the start of the 2000 season, a total of 14 Vulcans have played professional baseball. Three members of the 2010 PSAC Championship team made their professional debuts the next summer. After a record-breaking spring with the Vulcans in 2011, pitcher Randy Sturgill signed with the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League during the summer. Prior to taking the head-coaching position in 1997, Conte served as an assistant coach for long-time Vulcan mentor Chuck Gismondi, who set then-school records for wins and games coached. A native of nearby Brownsville, Conte was a two-time all-conference outfielder at Virginia Tech. As a junior, he led the team with a .352 average and received an offer to play with the Baltimore Orioles, which he declined. Conte returned to school for his senior
season and led the team in triples, homers, RBI, stolen bases and at-bats. He finished his career and still ranks fifth in Virginia Tech history with 43 career homers. Following the 1989 college season, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 19th round and played five seasons in the A’s minor-league system before retiring after the 1993 season. Conte completed his undergraduate degree in 1990. Following his professional playing career, he started his coaching career in 1994 at Cal U as an assistant and completed his master’s degree in Geography and Regional Planning. Conte resides in California with his wife Jamie and their four children, Louden, Payton, Jessie and Nina.
Following his college career at Virginia Tech, Mike Conte played five seasons in the Oakland Athletics farm system.

COACHING STAFF CHRIS BRUNSON ASSISTANT COACH 13th Year at Cal U brunson@calu.edu A former player for the Vulcans, Chris Brunson enters his 13th season as an assistant coach with the Cal U baseball program in 2013. Throughout his career, Brunson has coached 22 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West pitchers. In 2011, he coached All-American and two-time PSAC West Pitcher of the Year Randy Sturgill, who set single-season school records with 10 wins and 107 strikeouts as a senior. Sturgill also broke the all-time school record for victories before signing with the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League. In his first season in professional baseball, Sturgill finished with a 6-1 record and a 3.33 ERA in 16 appearances (seven starts). Brunson made an instant impact when joining the coaching staff in 2001, as the Vulcans led the conference in ERA during his first season. The
following year, hurler Ryan Balan led NCAA Division II with a 0.91 ERA in 60.0 innings and was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. Under Brunson’s tutelage, pitcher Ian Heisel posted a career-high eight wins in 2004 to help lead Cal U to its first PSAC Tournament Championship in 25 years. He has also coached three-time All-PSAC West selection Chris Doerschner, who finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in innings pitched. Brunson was a two-year player for the Vulcans and received captain status his senior season. As a junior in 1999, he led the pitching staff in both ERA and innings pitched before posting five wins as a senior. A native of Greensburg, Pa., Brunson earned his undergraduate degree in business administration
from Cal U in 2000. He later completed his master’s degree in 2002, majoring in Geography and Regional Planning. He currently resides in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., with his wife Heather and their three daughters, Haylie, Krista and Kendra.
MASON HEYNE
VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH Second Year at Cal U Following a standout career at Rider (N.J.), Mason Heyne enters his second year as a volunteer assistant coach with the Cal U baseball team. Heyne was a four-year starting infielder for the Broncs and helped lead the program to pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) titles and two appearances in the NCAA Regional Tournament. He finished his career as the school’s all-time leader with 186 RBI and ranked fourth with 247 hits. Heyne also tied for seventh in Rider history with 24 career homers after posting 11 homers as a sophomore. As a junior, Heyne helped lead the Broncs to
a school-record 36 victories and a second MAAC crown in three years. He finished the year with 21 doubles, just one double shy of tying the singleseason school record, and set career highs with 56 RBI and 45 runs scored. As Heyne was breaking the school record for RBI last season, Rider finished with 33 wins to mark only the second time in school history that the team posted back-to-back 30-win campaigns (1994-95). Originally from Shrewsbury, Pa., Heyne posted 13 homers as a senior at Susquehannock High School to earn York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic
Association (YAIAA) Player of the Year honors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communication from Rider in 2011 and is pursuing his master’s degree in sport management at Cal U.

BRUCE DAL CANTON PITCHING AWARD Bruce Dal Canton was a charter member of the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame and spent over 30 seasons in professional baseball as both a player and coach. Dal Canton passed away in October 2008 from esophageal cancer and the award was initially presented the following spring. The Bruce Dal Canton Pitching Award is given to a Vulcan hurler who truly exemplifies greatness of character. A native of Pittsburgh, Dal Canton made his major league debut in 1967 with the Pirates before retiring in 1977. He appeared in 300 games during his career while playing with four organizations: Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox. Following his playing career, Dal Canton worked with the Atlanta Braves as a minor league and major league pitching coach. While with the Braves, he coached more than 30 future major leaguers, including John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Steve Avery. Del Canton spent the last 10 seasons of his career as a pitching coaching with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the former Advanced-A affiliate of the Braves. The Vulcans posted the highest finish of any PSAC school in the Directors’ Cup by placing second in 2009-10. Cal U is the only PSAC school to finish in the top five of the standings since the award was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into
NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa. On March 20, 2013, Geraldine Jones was named interim president of California University of Pennsylvania after serving as acting president since May 2012. Jones graduated from California State College in 1971 and began her career in education as a second-grade teacher in the Albert Gallatin School District, in Uniontown, Pa. She returned to California in 1974, serving as program director for Upward Bound for 20 years and as chair of the Department of Academic Development Services for 11 years. She was associate dean of the College of Education and Human Services for two years before serving as dean from 20002008. In July 2008, she was named provost and vice president for academic affairs. A member of the Cal U Alumni Association board of directors, Jones has received numerous honors, including the Cal U Alumni Association’s John R. Gregg Award for Loyalty and Service, the Black Alumni Association’s Outstanding Service Award, and the Community Service Award given by the Minority Students Association at Penn State Fayette. In 2010 Jones was one of 50 Women of Excellence honored by the New Pittsburgh Courier, one of the oldest and most prestigious black newspapers in the United States. Jones is a lifelong member of Mt. Zion AME Church of Brownsville, Pa., where she has been the church pianist since age 14. She has been married to Jeffrey B. Jones for 37 years; they have two adult daughters and a granddaughter.

Cal U’s world class facilities provide the best in student housing and the new geothermal technologies have helped California University reduce power consumption to 57 percent less energy. Cal U is home to more than 100 clubs and organizations. The Student Activities Board programs provide various programs which include: concerts, lectures, films, off campus trips, recreational activities to name a few. As undergraduates, Cal U students can choose from more than 150 programs of study in three undergraduate colleges: Education & Human Services, Liberal Arts and Science, Technology & Business.
