Game Notes LOCK HAVEN HEAD COACH: Coming off a memorable 2013 campaign, John Allen is in his fourth season as head coach at Lock Haven. He has posted a 6-36 overall record with the Bald Eagles with his first victory coming in the final week of the 2012 season, snapping a 52-game losing streak - a NCAA Division II record. Last year, Lock Haven shifted to the PSAC East and Allen guided the program to its first three-win season since 2004. Allen previously served as an assistant at Lock Haven from 1996-03. SCOUTING THE BALD EAGLES: Lock Haven lost all four of its All-PSAC selections from last year, which marked the most for the program since 2005. The Bald Eagles rank in the bottom three of the PSAC in scoring offense (15.5 points/game) and total offense (286.0 yards/game). Junior quarterback Caleb Walton is on pace to become the program’s first 2,000-yard passer since 1995 after throwing for over 220 yards in each of the opening three games of the season. In his first year as the starter, junior Beau Swales leads the team with 546 rushing yards after posting back-to-back 100-yard games last month. Junior David Cook and senior Bernard Smack have both totaled over 40 receptions and have combined for seven touchdowns. Lock Haven sits in the middle of the league in both scoring defense (26.7 points/game) and total defense (408.8). Senior defensive back George Christas leads the team and ranks fourth in the PSAC with 90 tackles (52 solo) and has also added three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Sophomore Daniel Strawbridge sits second on the team with 71 stops (51 solo) and is tied for fourth in the league with four interceptions. On special teams, junior Bryce Stambaugh ranks fourth in the PSAC with a career-best average of 37.3 yards/punt with eight punts of 50-plus yards. Junior kicker Alex Boumerhi has made a pair of 40-plus yard field goals, but is only 6-of-14 overall this year. WHO’S IN: The latest Super Region One rankings were released on Monday and the PSAC continues to feature four teams in the rankings with Cal U slotted ninth. The region enters the weekend with a pair of undefeated teams. Super Region One consists of four conferences - PSAC, MEC, CIAA and NE-10 - and no league earns an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Playoffs. The top-two teams in the final regional rankings receive first-round byes, while the third and fourth seeds host first-round games. AGAINST THE EAST: Since 2004, Cal U holds a combined 26-9 record against PSAC East opponents. The Vulcans and Bald Eagles last met during the 2012 season when Lock Haven was still a member of the PSAC West. Lock Haven shifted divisions last year when the league expanded with the addition of Seton Hill. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: In last week’s contest, Cal U and Mercyhurst combined for 1,174 yards of total offense while running a combined 146 plays. Cal U quarterback James Harris and Mercyhurst quarterback Brendan Boylan both set single-game school records for their respective schools while passing for a combined 1,017 yards and 10 touchdowns. Cal U wide receiver Garry Brown and Mercyhurst wide receiver Stephen Yarbrough combined for over half of the receiving yards (520) and six scores while each set single-game school records. The teams combined for 70 points in the second half with the teams scoring touchdowns on seven-consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter. HOME SWEET HOME: Cal U has posted a 53-10 overall record (.841) at Adamson Stadium since 2005, highlighted by a 30-3 mark (.909) against opponents in the PSAC West.

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 6) – In a game featuring two lightning delays and a combined 48 first-half points, the Vulcans claimed a 33-24 season-opening victory against Virginia State at Adamson Stadium. Quarterback James Harris finished with a career-high 280 passing yards while making his seventh career start. He completed 15-of-27 attempts with two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Trojans. Harris recorded three lengthy passes in the first half, throwing for 207 yards before halftime behind touchdown passes of 69 and 49 yards. Cal U took a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter when Jordan Bowman returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. The opening four minutes of the second quarter featured three quick touchdown passes, all nearly at least 50 yards. The Trojans reclaimed the lead on a 60-yard score before Harris connected with wide receiver Garry Brown for a 69-yard touchdown on the opening play of the ensuing drive. Cal U forced a three-and-out before stretching the lead to 24-14 on another one-play touchdown drive, as Harris found wide receiver Kowan Scott for a 49-yard score with 12:26 left before halftime. Linebacker Branko Busick led the team with 10 tackles, while defensive lineman Kenny Wilkins tallied nine stops and 3.0 TFL in his college debut.
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 13) – The Vulcans capped a two-minute drive with a 50-yard field goal by kicker Cody Nuzzo as time expired to force overtime before suffering a 24-21 loss at No. 21 Bloomsburg in PSAC play. Trailing 21-18 with 2:01 remaining, the Vulcans started the gametying drive from their 5-yard line. Cal U converted a fourth-and-two from its 13-yard line before quarterback James Harris connected with tight end Desimon Green for another first down at the Cal U 31-yard line. Following a holding penalty on the Vulcans, Harris connected with wide receiver Mark Thomas for a pair of 10-yard completions that resulted in a first down. Bloomsburg called a timeout with 25 seconds remaining before Cal U crossed midfield following a pair of completions by Harris. Following a spike on third-and-one, running back Derrick Fiore converted a fourthand-one with a four-yard rush to the Bloomsburg 33-yard line. After another spike, Nuzzo broke the school record with a 50-yard field goal as time expired to tie the game at 21-21. Cal U started on offense in overtime and Harris was intercepted on the opening play of the drive by defensive lineman Shawn Mitchell. On their possession, the Huskies advanced the ball to the 16-yard line following three-straight runs before Braden Drexler made the gamewinning 32-yard field goal. Linebacker Branko Busick set a career high with 12 tackles and 4.0 TFL, while fellow linebacker Spencer Lynn added 11 stops.

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 25) – The Vulcans scored four early touchdowns and overcame a dozen penalties on Saturday afternoon to post a 43-32 win against Clarion at Memorial Stadium in PSAC West action. Quarterback James Harris finished with 284 passing yards on 18-of33 attempts. He passed for three first-half touchdowns, each to a different wide receiver, and threw his first interception since Sept. 13, which ended a streak of 182-straight attempts without an interception. Running backs Terrell Roberson and Nick Grissom combined for 152 rushing yards against the Golden Eagles. Roberson totaled 83 yards on 19 attempts and two scores, while Grissom posted 73 yards on 15 carries. After Clarion scored midway through the fourth quarter, Cal U forced a turnover on downs deep in Golden Eagles territory after an intentional grounding penalty. The Vulcans later turned the ball over on downs at the Golden Eagles 2-yard line before recording a quarterback sack in the end zone with less than one minute remaining in the game. Linebacker Spencer Lynn led the team with 12 tackles and fellow linebacker Jeff Knox, Jr. posted 11 stops, 3.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks.
