ABOUT CAL U
Atlantic/East Region Championships this May. Led by head coach MerriLyn Gibbs, the women’s team looks to rebound in the spring after finishing second at the PSAC Championships. Cal U won the previous three league titles and has made back-to-back appearances at the NCAA National Championships, finishing seventh last year. The Vulcans return one of the premier players in the country this season in senior Dianne Luke. She was selected an NGCA First-Team All-American and the PSAC Golfer of the Year in 2011. A three-time AllPSAC honoree, Luke led the team in scoring average last season with 11 top-10 finishes. The remainder of the starting five will likely be comprised of four veteran juniors: Lorena Aranda, Inez del Rosario, Maria Lopez and Kim Thomas. Last year, Thomas ranked second on the team in scoring average. She was selected to the All-PSAC First-Team after carding six finishes among the top 10 on the leader board. The former PSAC Freshman of the Year, Lopez played every event last season and earned All-PSAC for the second-straight year. She tied for second overall this fall at the PSAC Championships, marking her third-straight, top-10 finish at the league event. Aranda played only one event this fall, but figures to be a regular in the starting five. She received All-PSAC Second-Team laurels and earned medalist honors for the first time last season. del Rosario enters the spring on pace for a career-best scoring average. Last fall, she tied for sixth overall at the PSAC Championships. Sophomores Katharina Albert and Marine Verchere provide young depth and will play rounds on a limited basis this spring. With virtually the entire starting five back from the last two years, Cal U looks to challenge for a third-consecutive appearance on the national stage.

PLAYERS
Despite each team having only one senior, the Cal U men’s and women’s golf teams look to build upon recent success and once again compete at the NCAA Championships in May. Under the direction of Peter Coughlin, the men’s program features a veteran corps mixed with a pair of talented freshman in 2012. In the fall, the Vulcans finished fourth at the PSAC Championships after featuring a pair of top-10 performances. A two-time All-PSAC honoree, senior Paul Babashanian placed third overall at the league championships for the second time in his career. He posted a team-best finish seven times last year with five appearances in the top 10 on the leader board. Freshman Charlie Durman tied for eighth at the PSAC Championships and figures to build on that success in the spring. Overall, he posted three top-10 finishes in five events during his initial fall campaign. The Vulcans also feature a talented freshman this year in Jordan Eck. Despite playing one invitational during the fall, he figures to play significantly in the spring after finishing fourth overall in his college debut. Junior Justin Newbauer and the sophomores tandem of Campbell Quirk and Chris Tull figure to consistently be in the starting five for Cal U. Tull played in all 12 events last season and ranked second on the team in scoring average and was the team’s low scorer three times. After playing just three events last year, Quirk was the team’s top finisher twice during the fall with a top-10 showing at the Powerade Invitational. Newbauer is one of the most veteran players on the team, playing 25 events over the last two-plus season. With talented youth and a solid group of veterans, the Vulcans look to improve upon consecutive 10th-place finishes at the NCAA

Peter Coughlin is in his fifth season as head coach of the California University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team after joining the program in the spring of 2008. Last season, Coughlin led Cal U to a fourth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships. He coached All-PSAC Second-Team selection Paul Babashanian, who posted five top-10 finishes and earned medalist honors for the first time in his career. Coughlin directed the Vulcans to a second-place finish at the 2009 PSAC Championships behind a pair of individual top-five finishes. Prior to the league championships, Cal U claimed its first invitational title under Coughlin at a 17team tournament. The Vulcans also finished 10th at the NCAA Regional Championships the following spring after finishing 16th in the team standings the previous year. In his first full season with the program in 2008-09, Coughlin guided the Vulcans to a third-place finish at the PSAC Championships and an appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships. A graduate of Maryland, Coughlin came to Cal U after leading nearby Washington & Jefferson, a Division III program, to its most success years in program history. While with the Presidents, he served as both the head men’s & women’s golf coach for four-plus years. During both the 2006 and 2007 season, Coughlin guided W&J to a combined four

Cal U posted the highest finish of any PSAC school in the Directors’ Cup by placing second in 2009-10. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to finish in the top five of the standings since the award was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year.
The Vulcans are the first team in the PSAC history to win at least a share of seven-straight divisional titles in football. Cal U also won 24-consecutive games in divisional play from 2007-10 while winning three outright league crowns.

HISTORY HISTORY
ABOUT CAL U
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions.
