elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan men’s basketball. I am confident that Coach Bill Brown, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the basketball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Trophy is emblematic of athletic supremacy in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference—the PSAC, the premier Division II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 167 California University of Pennsylvania student athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Men’s Basketball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2009-10 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

ulcans V SEASON OUTLOOK

CAL U MEN’S BASKETBALL

In the backcourt, the Vulcans feature tremendous depth with the return of senior Jerial Nixon, junior Joe Berenato and sophomores Chad Tipton and Travon Vann. Nixon earned All-PSAC West honors last year after finishing second on the team in scoring and third in both rebounds and

Fellow newcomer LaRon Byrd and redshirt freshman Tim Tyree will battle for time behind Travis Williams at the point position. Last year, Byrd led the Philadelphia public league in scoring for most of the year. With the increased depth and varying skill sets found throughout the roster, Brown figures to have the Vulcans challenging for a spot in the PSAC Tournament and contending for their second league title in three years.

GENERAL

Junior forward Anthony Vaughn also provides depth to the frontcourt after missing last year due to injury. He features biggame experience after playing in 20 games as a reserve on Cal U’s Elite Eight team of 2007-08.

Despite the experience in the backcourt, junior transfer Travis Williams figures to open the season as the starting point guard after a solid preseason. A transfer from Potomac State in West Virginia, he is a slashing guard with the ability to find open players.

HISTORY

Young figures to make an instant impact after transferring from Harcum College in Philadelphia. He features the ability to score from inside the paint and on the perimeter. Hatten will give Brown another impact newcomer who is capable of playing three different positions. A good passer and defender, he features a good touch from the perimeter for being a 6-8 swingman.

Berenato and Tipton give the Vulcans a pair of perimeter players with the ability to shoot from beyond the arc. Berenato led the team last year in both three-point and free-throw percentages while playing primarily off the bench. Tipton saw significant action as a true freshman and provides difficult matchups with his skill set and size.

With his lengthy 6-8 frame, Moore gives Cal U a dominant defensive force in the paint. He finished last year as the PSAC’s leader and 14th in NCAA Division II with 2.6 blocks per game. A transfer from Morgan State (Md.), Moore also thrived down the stretch by averaging over eight points, six rebounds and four blocks in the last five games of the year.

Vann is perhaps the most improved player after spending significant time in the weight room over the summer. One of Senior guard Jerial Nixon earned the best defenders All-PSAC West Second-Team honors in last year, he has his first season with the Vulcans. improved his allaround game after missing the last month of the year due to injury

PLAYERS

Sophomore forward Kelsey Williams led the Vulcans in both scoring and rebounding last year.

After redshirting in 2007-08, Williams proved to be one of the top young players in the league last season. He became the first player since Boris Mesnager in 2005-06 to lead the Vulcans in both scoring and rebounding. Williams, who was selected the PSAC West Freshman of the Week four times last year, played his best toward the end of the season averaging nearly 18 points and eight rebounds over the final eight games.

COACHING PREVIEW STAFF

Head coach Bill Brown opens the year with a wealth of options in the frontcourt with the return of senior Chris Moore and sophomore Kelsey Williams, along with the addition of junior transfers Rashawd Hatten and Andrew Young. With Hatten’s versatility, the trio of Williams, Moore and Hatten could be on the court at the same time throughout the season.

assists. The 6-1 guard made a team-high 36 three-pointers and was one of the best free-throw shooters on the squad. Playing at a slimmer weight than last year, Nixon benefited from playing in Europe over the summer.

ABOUT CAL U

Cal U enters the 2009-10 season in the position of flying under the radar. After missing the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament for only the third time this decade, the Vulcans return a more seasoned team that is eager to improve upon last season’s 13-13 overall record.

Forward Chris Moore is one of the premier shot blockers in the nation.

CAL U MEN’S BASKETBALL

In his 13 seasons as head coach, Bill Brown has continued to enhance the rich history of the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball program. During his time with the Vulcans, Brown has amassed a record of 271-110 to become the winningest coach in program history. He has guided Cal U to eight 20-win seasons with the Vulcans qualifying for the PSAC Tournament in 10 out of 13 seasons and advancing to the Head Coach ‘State Game’ four times, brown_w@calu.edu winning it twice (1998-99, 2007-08). The 2007-08 campaign offered Brown and his staff one of the more challenging tasks of his Cal U tenure. Featuring four new starters, the Vulcans registered a 28-6 overall record, won their first PSAC Championship since 1999 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 1996. The 28 wins are also the second-most in school history. Brown has been named the PSAC West Coach of the Year in two of the last three seasons and five times during his 13-year tenure. Prior to his time at Cal U, Brown served as head coach at Division III Kenyon College for eight seasons. Under his direction, the Lords qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament in back-to-back seasons after posting 20-plus wins in 1993-94 and 1994-95. In 1993-94, Kenyon won its conference championship tournament and earned the top seed in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the year with a 24-4 record. Brown started his head-coaching career at Sacramento State University and coached the Hornets for two seasons during the program’s transition to NCAA Division I. He followed his time at Sacramento State with a season as an assistant

As a player, he was a three-year starter and twotime, all-conference selection for the Bobcats, who won a pair of Mid-American Conference (MAC) titles and played in two NCAA Tournaments during his playing career. After four seasons at Ohio as a coach, Brown served a one-year stint as an assistant at Kent State University before accepting the top assistant position with legendary coach Eddie Sutton at the University of Arkansas. His duties included serving as recruiting coordinator, assisting with on-the-floor coaching academic counseling, scouting, and directing Razorback Basketball Camp. In each of Brown’s five years with the program, Arkansas made NCAA Tournament appearances, won two Southwest Conference Championships, and remained in the Top 20 rankings. In 1984 and 1985, Brown was rated as one of the top five assistant coaches and recruiters in the nation by the Basketball Times. Brown was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Regional Coach of the Year in both 2007 and 2008, and was selected to serve as head coach in the senior all-star game at the 2007 NCAA Division II Championship Weekend in Springfield, Mass. Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Brown has served in every facet of the game of basketball as a player, a coach and an administrator. Brown earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 from Ohio with concentrations in English, Sociology and Social Work. He and his wife Christy reside in California and have two grown children, Aaron and Kerra, and three Elijah grandchildren, Jalen, Elijah and Kingston.

CUTV is heavily involved with the university and area high school sports coverage. Over the past several years, CUTV has produced all of California University’s football and basketball contests, as well as various volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball events. CUTV also produces a weekly coach’s show for the sport in season. CUTV also produces a High School Football Game of the Week, with several of these contests carried live to a statewide audience via PCN. To its credit, CUTV has been recognized by many national organizations. The National Association of Collegiate Broadcasters (NACB) awarded CUTV “Best in the Nation” for its news and sports, as well as station of the year, 1997-98. The station has also received multiple TELLY awards for its sports, news and documentary coverage. In addition, CUTV has received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, Communicator, Videography and Axiem organizations. Offices and studios are located in the Natali Student Center. CUTV maintains a fully loaded production truck capable of producing multicamera field events. The program employs a staff of three professionals and enjoys a student membership of over 40. For more information contact J.R. Wheeler, Assistant Dean of Student Services, Room 150 of the Natali Student Center, phone 724-938-4303 or e-mail: wheeler@cup.edu.

All Vulcan PSAC West games are broadcast live on 91.9 FM - Power 92 (Away) and rebroadcast on the CUTV network .
