The Convocation Center at Cal U is the latest addition to the campus of Cal U. The facility is the new home of Vulcan basketball. The arena also is used for Commencement, convocations and other campus gatherings. Cal U plans to host athletic tournaments, trade shows, job fairs, country music concerts and other public events in this spacious facility. The Convocation Center is available for executive-level conferencing. Located on the shores of the Monongahela River, just 35 miles from Pittsburgh, it is the heart of River’s Bend, a full-service conferencing service. The 142,000-square-foot Convocation Center is a model of “smart” technology, the hub of campus activities and a destination for visitors from southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond.
It took approximately two years for this landmark structure to rise at California University of Pennsylvania.
This state-of-the-art building houses a 6,000-seat arena, the largest indoor venue between Pittsburgh and Morgantown, W.Va.
The Convocation Center was a $59 million project. Nearly 400 laborers and skilled workers have worked at the Convocation Center site.
An 80-foot tower that stands alongside the building announces its high-tech character with scrolling text and digital images displayed along its sides.
This 142,000-square-foot building gives Cal U much needed space to welcome the families of graduating seniors and master’s degree candidates to enjoy Commencement together in comfortable surroundings.

The Vulcans made a second-straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament last season while beginning play in the Convocation Center. Cal U graduated five players, including three starters, from last year’s team that finished 17-12 overall. Senior captain Quentin Harding returns after making a combined 42 starts over the last two seasons. He averaged double-digits as a sophomore before moving to the interior last year due to his athleticism and positional need. A former Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 selection, Harding looks to move back to the perimeter this season as a multi-dimensional player. Over the summer, the McKeesport native teamed with players from all NCAA divisions to play five games in Belgium. Senior guard Keith Lowe is the top returning scorer while playing 17 games after joining the program following the fall semester. He ranked fourth on the team at 8.7 points per game and showed the ability to be a dynamic multidimensional player. In his first four games with the team, Lowe averaged 14.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. Sophomore Tynell Fortune and freshman Jake Jacubec figure to handle the duties at point guard. Fortune was one of the top free-throw shooters in the PSAC last season, making 85.9 percent (79-of92). He finished fifth on the team in scoring at 7.7 points per game despite making just two starts. Fortune is the top returning threat from beyond the arc with 25 three-pointers last year. Jacubec was a first-team all-state selection in Ohio while playing just outside of Youngstown. He helped lead Struthers High School to a pair of district titles and was selected the area’s Player of the Year after averaging over 26 points per game. Cal U features increased depth in the backcourt with the addition of freshman DeVonte’ Allen and junior transfer Tyrone Steals. Allen was a two-time All-European selection after playing in Germany, while Steals recently played at the Community College of Beaver County. Steals was the conference MVP while at New Castle High School and comes from a basketball family, as his father was a letterman at Robert Morris from 1987-91.
FT% .625
Cal U will have to replace Academic AllAmerican and All-PSAC West First-Team forward Steve Swiech, who led the team in scoring the last two seasons. Senior Mitchell Weedon figures to open the year as a starter after appearing in every game last year. He averaged 6.1 points per game while shooting over 50 percent from the floor. Weedon also collected 22 steals to rank third on the team. Sophomore Jeremy Posey returns as one of the premier shot-blockers in the PSAC. Standing at 6 feet 7 inches, he plays above the rim both offensively and defensively. Posey ranked sixth in the league with 1.4 blocks per game while making only one start. He also ranked third on the team with 4.1 rebounds per game. The forward position will also feature a proven starter in the PSAC with the addition of junior Anthony Lytle. The Altoona native played at Edinboro from 2009-11 and made 37 starts for the Fighting Scots. As a sophomore, Lytle led the team in rebounds and ranked fourth in the league with a .577 field-goal percentage (127-of-220). Junior Chris Williams figures to see an expanded role in his second season with the program. He appeared in 21 games last year and can play multiple positions with his size and skill set. Freshmen Art Cook and Josh Dombrosky provide additional depth at forward. Cook, similar to Williams, looks to play multiple positions after playing for a district championship team in Ohio. Dombrosky was an all-state selection while playing in Eastern Pennsylvania. He possesses classic forward size, standing 6 feet 7 inches and 215 pounds. Led by longtime head coach Bill Brown, the Vulcans were selected to finish fifth in the preseason PSAC West poll, their lowest position in recent years. Cal U looks to challenge not only for a berth in the PSAC Tournament, but also contend for its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2008. The Vulcans have averaged nearly 20 wins while making six appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 16 seasons under Brown.

In his 16 seasons as head coach, Bill Brown has continued to enhance the rich history of the Cal U program. During his time with the Vulcans, Brown has amassed a record of 321145 to become the winningest coach in program history. He has guided Cal U to eight 20-win seasons with the Vulcans qualifying for the PSAC Tournament in 12 of 16 seasons and advancing to the ‘State Game’ four times, winning it twice (1999, 2008). Brown has been named the PSAC West Coach of the Year five times and NABC Regional Coach of the Year twice during his tenure at Cal U. In the spring of 2012, he received the prestigious NABC Guardians of the Game Pillar Award for Advocacy. In the 2007-08 season, Brown led the Vulcans to a 28-6 overall record, their first PSAC Championship since 1999 and their first appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament since 1996. The 28 wins rank as the second-most in school history. Prior to his time at Cal U, Brown served as head coach for eight seasons at Kenyon, a NCAA Division III program in Columbus, Ohio. Under his direction, the Lords qualified for the NCAA Tournament in back-toback seasons after posting 20-plus wins in 1993-94 and 1994-95. In 1993-94, Kenyon won its conference tournament and earned the top seed in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the year with a 24-4 record. Brown started his career as a head coach at Sacramento State and coached the Hornets for two seasons during the program’s transition to NCAA Division I. He followed his time at Sacramento State with a season as an assistant coach at Tennessee. Brown started his coaching career at Ohio after a successful playing career for the Bobcats. As a player, he was a three-year starter and two-time, all-conference selection for the Bobcats, who won a pair of MidAmerican Conference (MAC) titles and appeared in two NCAA Tournaments during his playing career.
BIll & Christy Brown After four seasons at Ohio as a coach, Brown served a one-year stint as an assistant at Kent State before accepting the top assistant position with legendary coach Eddie Sutton at Arkansas. His duties included serving as recruiting coordinator, assisting with on-the-floor coaching, academic counseling, scouting and directing the Razorback Basketball Camp. In each of Brown’s five years with the program, Arkansas made NCAA Tournament appearances, won two Southwest Conference Championships and remained in the Top 20 rankings. In 1984 and 1985, Brown was rated as one of the top five assistant coaches and recruiters in the nation by the Basketball Times. Brown was named the NABC Regional Coach of the Year in both 2007 and 2008, and was selected to serve as head coach in the senior allstar game at the 2007 NCAA Division II Championship Weekend. In 2011, he served as head coach for a team that was assembled through Global Sports Academy and played five games in four European countries.
Brown has received national attention in recent years for his longstanding relationship with VCU head coach Shaka Smart, who led the Rams to the Final Four in 2011. While the head coach at Kenyon, Brown recruited Smart to play for the Lords, and after becoming the head coach at Cal U, Brown hired the recentlygraduated Smart as an assistant coach with the Vulcans. Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Brown and his wife Christy reside in California and have two grown children, Aaron and Kerra, and five grandchildren, Jalen, Elijah, Kingston, Aubrey and Kamille.

11 PSAC WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS • 13 NCAA APPEARANCES • THREE ELITE EIGHT APPEARANCES • TWO FINAL FOUR APPEARANCES
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
Senior guard Jon Breeden, an All-PSAC East First-Team selection, will pace the Golden Rams this season after averaging 12.9 points and 4.0 assists per game in the 2011-12 campaign.
