Following an impressive fall season, the Vulcans appear ready to build upon the success this spring. Led by head coach Peter Coughlin, Cal U looks to again qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships and improve on three-straight, 10th-place finishes. Cal U placed second at the 2012 PSAC Championships for the second time in the last four season after the program was reinstated just eight years ago. Under head coach Peter Coughlin, the resurgence looks to continue with the emergence of sophomores Charlie Durman and Jordan Eck mixed with improving veterans. Durman recorded arguably the best season by a Cal U golfer in decades while just a freshman. The English native was selected the 2012 PSAC Freshman of the Year and was named to the All-PSAC First Team. Durman also garnered PING all-region laurels last spring after finishing just one stroke shy of qualifying for an at-large berth to the NCAA National Championships, a feat not accomplished in over 30 years. He continued his strong play this fall by posting the best individual finish by a Cal U golfer at the PSAC Championships in recent years, shooting a three-under 141 to place second overall. After playing one event last fall, Eck developed into one of the team’s top players in the spring. He was the opening-round leader at the NCAA Regional Championships before tying for eighth place and finishing only two strokes shy of qualifying for the NCAA National Championships as an individual. The Williamsport native also recorded the top score in the first round of the 2012 PSAC Championships before placing third at two-under 142. Junior Adam Jeffery showed marked improvement in the fall, leading the team in scoring average while playing three events. In his season debut, he earned medalist honors at Washington & Jefferson and tied for third overall at Mercyhurst. Jeffery competed sparingly over the last two

Seniors Justin Newbauer and Austin Stoddard are two of the most veteran players in recent years, as they have combined to play 63 events in their careers. Newbauer posted one of the best fall seasons of his career and played in the PSAC Championships for the fourth-straight year. After missing last season, Stoddard opened the fall with a match-play victory against Fairleigh Dickinson, an NCAA Division I program. He boasts significant post-season experience, as he played in the NCAA Regional Championships each year from 2009-11. Junior Chris Tull and senior Chad Pappasergi, all recorded impressive fall seasons while seeing limited action. Pappasergi opened the fall with a win in match play before playing in two tournaments. Senior Evan Matoske also returns after missing the fall season due to academic commitments. Matoske and Tull have combined to play 32 events during their careers. The Vulcans feature additional depth with the addition of redshirt freshman Jake Brawley and true freshmen Grant Newton, Mark Paradise and Brad Thornton. In his college debut this fall, Brawley tied for first overall at the Powerade Invitational and became the first Cal U golfer in recent years to be named the PSAC Athlete of the Week. Thornton competed in all five events in the fall and registered a pair of match play victories, including a 1-up win against George Mason. Paradise also earned a victory in match play during the fall. With the improvement the team showed in the fall, the Vulcans appear poised not only to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships but show marked improvement in the team standings with Durman and Eck possibly challenging for at-large berths to the NCAA National Championships.

Peter Coughlin has led Cal U to the NCAA post-season in each of his first five years with the program. Now in his sixth year, Coughlin has also guided the Vulcans to a pair of second-place finishes at the PSAC Championships in the last four years. Coughlin has the Vulcans off to a strong start in the 2012-13 season. In the fall, Cal U placed second at the league championships and boasted two of the top-five players on the leader board. Last year, Cal U featured two AllPSAC First-Team selections and nearly qualified two individuals for the NCAA National Championships. Newcomer Charlie Durman was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year and finished just one stroke shy of qualifying as an individual to the NCAA National Championships. Fellow freshman Jordan Eck was only two strokes shy of qualifying after being the openinground leader at the regional event. The Vulcans also captured a pair of tournament titles last season, while Durman earned medalist honors once. In the 2009-10 campaign, the Vulcans tied for second in the team standings at PSAC Championships. Prior to the league championships, Cal U claimed its first invitational title under Coughlin at a 17-team tournament. The Vulcans also placed 10th at the NCAA Regional Championships after finishing 16th in

the team standings the previous year. While with the Vulcans, Coughlin mentored Paul Babashanian, who became the first three-time All-PSAC honoree since the program was reinstated. Babashanian placed third overall at the league championships as both a sophomore and senior. A graduate of Maryland, Coughlin came to Cal U after leading nearby Washington & Jefferson, an NCAA Division III program, to tremendous success. While with the Presidents, he served as both the head men’s & women’s golf coach for four-plus years. During the 2006 and 2007 season, Coughlin guided W&J to a combined four Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championships behind four medalist golfers and seven allconference golfers. In 2006, he was selected as the Eaton Golf Pride MidAtlantic Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the Presidents to their firstever appearance in the NCAA National Championships. Among the PAC medalists was Michael Grasso, who became the first golfer in W&J history to be named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) PING All-America Team. Coughlin also coached Grasso to two-straight NCAA Tournaments. Prior to his tenure at W&J, the Pennsylvania native served as the golf services assistant at the Heron Creek

Golf Club in North Port, Fla. During his time at Heron Creek, he represented the club in various PGA professional tour events, including the Canadian Tour Winter Qualifying School. Coughlin earned his degree in marketing from Maryland in 1999 and served as the assistant golf professional at the University of Maryland Golf Course for two years. Among his duties at the course were planning and organizing tournaments for the Terps, instructing students on techniques to improve their game and scheduling and marketing the course’s junior program, which included summer camps.

Cal U annually hosts the Dr. Diane Nettles and ollege of Education and Human Services Invitational during the fall season at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

PSAC

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania

State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions.
