Last year, Cal U debuted a state-of-the art facility, advanced to the second of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history and finished the year ranked No. 15 in the NSCAA poll. Expectations are high for the Vulcans in 2012, as they return seven starters from last season. However, head coach Dennis Laskey will be replacing an AllPSAC goalkeeper for the second-straight year. The Vulcans have three candidates with collegiate experience to help fill the void in net. Sophomore Shane Donovan appeared as a reserve in one game last season, helping to record a shutout. Junior Alex Heston joins the program after serving as the starting goalkeeper at Philadelphia for the last two seasons, while sophomore Mitch Mack played nearly 1,200 minutes last year at St. Bonaventure. Despite the loss of two starters on defense, Cal U returns a veteran corps in 2012. Senior captains Chris Moehler and Nemanja Visekruna anchor the back line after combining to start 90 games in their careers. Visekruna earned first-team NSCAA and AllPSAC laurels last year without recording a point. As a sophomore, he received second-team honors from the NSCAA and PSAC after setting career highs with six goals and 15 points. Moehler has established career highs in points every year of his career, including last year when he scored four goals. Senior transfer Billy Wilson and freshman Lubos Kubik also figure to open the year as starters on defense. A native of Scotland, Wilson was a threetime All-WVIAC selection while playing the last three years at Wheeling Jesuit and helped the Cardinals advance to the WVIAC Championship Game in 2011. Kubik has an impressive pedigree, as his father played four seasons in the MLS and was an assistant coach with the U.S. Men’s National Team.

Sophomores Kevin Helbig and Chris Hunkele, along with senior Ryan Grindle, provide experienced depth at defense. Grindle has played in nearly 50 games during his career and Helbig scored the game-winning goal in last year’s NCAA Tournament win over Shippensburg. Cal U will also have significant experience at the midfield position this year. Senior Paul Silvestrone and junior Scott Campbell will anchor the position after both received All-PSAC Second-Team honors in 2011. Silvestrone, a former two-time All-WVIAC selection while at Wheeling Jesuit, returns as the team’s leader in all three offensive categories, highlighted by four goals. Campbell collected two goals in his first season as a starter. Sophomores Brad Colvin and Jon Murphy both tallied three goals last year and combined to start 26 games. Junior Gaby Deller-Borgono and freshman Jesse Brior will both see significant time this season in the midfield. Deller-Borgono set a career high in goals last year while playing primarily as a reserve. At forward, sophomore Jeffrey Kyei figures to be an impact player for the Vulcans in 2012 after being forced to sit out last season. He previously played in one of the premier amateur leagues in his native Germany before playing this summer in the Premier Development League. The trio of junior Christopher Karns, sophomore Tyler Woolum and freshman Anthony DiFrancesco figures to challenge for the other starting forward position. Karns, who scored the first-ever goal at the Phillipsburg Complex last year, doubled his previous career high in points last year behind three goals. Woolum started all three postseason games last year and finished the season with two goals and two assists. DiFrancesco was a prolific goal scorer and an all-state selection while playing scholastically in Georgia. Senior Ryan Slaby also provides valuable depth at forward for Cal U, as he posted six points in his first year playing since 2007.

Cal U Head Coach Cal U Head Coach

The longest tenured Cal U head coach, Dennis Laskey enters his 27th season (22nd consecutive) at the helm of the men’s soccer program in 2012. He ranks in the top 20 nationally among active head coaches in NCAA Division II in career victories. Laskey has been with the Vulcans for almost the entire 29 years of the program, dating back to the inaugural season of 1984. During his time at Cal U, he holds a 247-21739 overall record (.530) with five appearances in the PSAC Championship Game and three berths in the NCAA Tournament. In 2011, Laskey helped lead the Vulcans back to the postseason for the first time in three years while the program debuted the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility. He also guided the program to its first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament last year. Behind an improbable late-season surge in 2008, Cal U won the PSAC West title and claimed the program’s first-ever PSAC Tournament Championship. The Vulcans also garnered a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. In addition to his 27 years with the men’s program, Laskey was also instrumental in the creation of the women’s soccer program at Cal U. He served as the first head coach for the women’s program in 1990 and coached both the men’s and women’s soccer teams from 1991-2001. A native of nearby Dunlevy, Pa., he has coached five players that were inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame. Nicholas Addlery, who plays professionally, and

Audrey Dawson were both inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. Laskey played in the Pennsylvania West Soccer League for more than four decades and was a member of the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) National Championship team in 2005. Two years later, he was inducted into the Mid-Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame. This summer, Laskey was selected to All-Half Century Team at Charleroi High School and will be recognized this fall as one of the top 18 players in school history. A four-year starting defender at AldersonBroaddus, Laskey earned honorable mention from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Following his time at A-B, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1972 and continued his playing career throughout Europe for the U.S. Navy Phiblant team stationed in the Mediterranean. Laskey, who finished his degree at Cal U after his tour of duty, entered the coaching ranks as head coach at Charleroi High School from 1978-83. He also served as the co-founder and first president of the Mon Valley Youth Soccer Association. He moved to the collegiate game in 1983 working with the Vulcan men’s soccer team

EMEDIN SABIC ASSISTANT COACH Sixth Year at Cal U sabic@calu.edu A veteran of the Cal U soccer programs, Emedin Sabic enters his third year with the men’s soccer team in 2012. Sabic previously served three seasons as an assistant coach with the women’s soccer program. Over the last two seasons, the Vulcans have posted 23 wins and an impressive .684 winning percentage. Cal U has featured seven All-PSAC players during that time, including two-time All-PSAC defender Nemanja Visekruna. While working with the women’s team at Cal U, Sabic helped lead the program to a combined 31 victories from

4

2008-09 after managing only four victories the previous year. In 2009, Cal U advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in its first-ever postseason appearance. Originally from Bosnia, Sabic is no stranger to men’s soccer in the PSAC after playing four years for head men’s soccer coach Dennis Laskey from 2003-06. He registered 11 goals and 11 assists, while playing 82 career games (55 starts) for Cal U. During his playing career, the Vulcans compiled 45 victories and reached the PSAC Championship Game three-straight years. As a sophomore in 2004, the

on the club level before the program moved to the NCAA level in 1984. He coached Cal U for five seasons, winning three-straight West Penn Intercollegiate Soccer conference titles (1986-88). In 1989, he moved back to the scholastic level coaching Upper St. Clair High School to a pair of WPIAL titles before returning back to Cal U to start the women’s soccer program. Laskey resides in Charleroi, Pa., with his wife Jeanne. The couple has three children, Deni Lynn, Deiter and Marissa, and three grandchildren, Jesse, Jude and Priya.

Vulcans qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The following year, Cal U tied the school record with 14 wins. Sabic moved to Germany in 1991 and played club soccer in Europe until his family moved to the United States in 1999. He attended Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa., and helped lead the Ramblers to a state championship in 2001. He was a three-time, first-team all-metro and first-team all-district selection while playing at Prep. PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of fulltime members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 201112 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 fulltime institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC ScholarAthletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. HISTORY T

he game of soccer is deeply rooted in the Mon Valley region surrounding California University of Pennsylvania. The tiny borough of Dunlevy, Pa., formed a soccer recreation league that began to teach the game and develop players in the 1970s. It is because of this league that every year head coach Dennis Laskey and the Cal U men’s soccer program host “Dunlevy Day,” in which players, coaches and alumni of that league are invited and recognized at a Vulcan soccer game. Without the tireless efforts of those individuals who helped increase awareness of the sport, soccer would not have reached the popularity it has in the area. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the game of soccer exploded onto the American college scene. Laskey worked with the administration at the time to help form a men’s soccer program. In 1983, working out in the gym at 5:30 a.m. because that was the only practice time available to them, Laskey entered a group of young men in to the Keystone Soccer League (KSL), which was a part of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) amateur league. The point of this was simple: build enough interest in the sport and program to eventually be able to make the transition to creating a full-time intercollegiate program. Laskey went to Cal U Athletic Hall of Famer Elmo Natali, the Vice President of Student Development, who was from the area and knew a lot of the same people in the soccer community, with a proposal of how to start the program on campus. Natali liked what he saw and heard from the ambitious coach and took the proposal before the board which was approved with Laskey being appointed the first head coach in program history. The first couple of seasons, the schedule included a lot of teams that Laskey felt were better than Cal U. His reasoning was that at the beginning of a program, the results are not as important, having the ability to teach and compete against higher-caliber players will do more for long-term success. Over the first two seasons, 1984-85, the Vulcans went 5-24-1, but by 1986-87, teams were not interested in playing Cal U because they feared defeat. In 1986, the Cal U men’s soccer program posted its first winning record, finishing 8-8-3 before going 8-8-2 in 1987 and 10-8-2 in 1988. Since an eight-win campaign in 1997, the Vulcans have reached doubledigit victory totals in 12 of 14 seasons. In 2011, the Vulcans secured their 15th double-digit win total by posting a 12-4-4 mark. Aside from a two-year period where he left the University to pursue other opportunities, Laskey has served as the Mike Luecke is tied head coach for second in school history of Cal U men’s with 52 career goals. soccer from
