DR. ANGELO ARMENTI, JR. W
elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan softball. I am confident that Coach Rick Bertagnolli, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the softball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Trophy is emblematic of athletic supremacy in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference—the PSAC, the premier Division II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the Fall 2009 academic semester, a total of 201 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the seventh-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Lilly Field. Softball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

HEAD COACH Entering his 17th season at California University of Pennsylvania, Rick Bertagnolli has guided the Cal U softball program into a perennial n a t i o n a l contender and placed himself among the elite coaches Rick Bertagnolli insoftball the country. softball@calu.edu The Vulcans have reached the NCAA Tournament 15 times with back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 1997 and 1998. Currently in his 26th season as a head coach, Bertagnolli has a career collegiate coaching record of 830-233 (.781) and holds an overall mark of 567-183 (.756) with the Vulcans. He enters the year ranked sixth among active coaches in NCAA Division II in winning percentage and is the winningest coach in all of Cal U sports history. Bertagnolli’s Vulcan teams have appeared in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Game 11 times and set a NCAA record with 88-consecutive conference wins from 1994-99. Numerous Vulcan players have garnered national, regional and conference recognition under Bertagnolli’s direction. He has coached 27 All-Americans, 62 all-region honorees and 107 all-conference selections. In 1998, Bertagnolli helped tutor two-time All-American Danielle Penner, who was named the National Player of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). He has also coached a pair of Olympians in Meaggan Wilton (2000 Sydney) and Megan Timpf (2008 Beijing), both of whom represented Team Canada. The Cal U softball success under Bertagnolli has also been evident in the classroom as last year 10 players were named PSAC ScholarAthletes. Bertagnolli’s career at Cal U began in 1994 and in his first season the Vulcans recorded a 38-13 record, advanced to the PSAC
championship game, and captured the regional championship. After a combined 93 wins the next two seasons, the stage was set for a historic 1997 season. With Penner dominating opponents on the hill, Cal U rolled to a program-best 53-5 record to capture the first Cal U national championship in any sport in school history with a 2-1 victory in the championship game. In 1998, Cal U became only the fourth (and last) school in Division II softball history to win back-to-back National Championships. The Vulcans registered a 47-7 overall record behind the play of five different All-Americans, including Penner, who was named NFCA Player of the Year after finishing her career with a NCAA record 141 career victories. Bertagnolli and his staff were named NFCA Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year by the NFCA. Since the two National Championships, Cal U has maintained a tradition of excellence by qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 11 seasons. The Vulcans also won 12 PSAC West Championships (1994-2004, 2009) and qualified for 16-straight PSAC Tournaments (1994-2009) under Bertagnolli. In 2009, Bertagnolli registered his 800th career win as a college coach after guiding the Vulcans to a 35-10 overall record, an outright PSAC West title and appearances in the PSAC Tournament and NCAA Tournament. Bertagnolli started his college coaching career at Wabash Valley Junior College for three seasons before serving as head coach at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg for two seasons. Bertagnolli resides with his wife Jodi and their daughters Ava and Mia.

O
riginating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
