primarily in the outfield. “With the physical skill attributes of our returners and now added with Shelby Lia, Natalie Wideman and Stephani Ellis, it gives us a lot of leeway to play a lot of infielders and outfielders - putting speed or arm strength where we need it,” said Bertagnolli. One of the most scouted players in Canada, Wideman will see time in the line-up at a variety positions in 2011, whether in the infield, outfield or behind the plate. One player set at her position is senior pitcher Maria Greco. Battling injuries late last season, she posted a 16-8 record and a 1.69 ERA with over 175 strikeouts and earned All-PSAC West honors. “Greco is a finesse pitcher with a great change-up and she spots the ball well,” said Bertagnolli of the 2009 PSAC West Pitcher of the Year. However, Greco is the only returning pitcher with any game action as the rest of the rotation features three true freshman and a redshirt freshman. “There is a lot of competition among the freshmen pitchers,” said Bertagnolli. “They are doing tremendous and are going to get a lot of time this year.” Given the quality of experience returning and quick developing pitchers, it easy to see why the Vulcans could be again reloading for their 19th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last 21 years.
2011 2011 PREVIEW PREVIEW
It’s not often a team reloads rather than rebuilds after losing six seniors and advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals, but that’s the way 18th-year head coach Rick Bertagnolli views the 2011 season. “The way the team has practiced, and the energy and enthusiasm they have come out with, I look at us actually reloading this year rather than rebuilding, even with the loss of key players,” said Bertagnolli, the all-time winningest coach in Cal U history. Keying that reloading process is the return of five players that earned All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West honors last season and one of the largest incoming classes in recent years. The offense returns the top of the order completely intact with veterans Merissa Daley, Danielle Easton, Alyson Johnson and Jillian Russell. The quartet combined for 30 homers and 200 starts last season in helping the Vulcans finish with a 37-14 overall record and advance to the PSAC Championship for the first time since 2004. A two-year starter at shortstop, Russell was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Year after hitting .313 with 11 homers and 38 RBI last season. The 5-8 junior returns to the program after playing last summer for the Canadian National Team. “She [Russell] came in with all the physical traits of being a great softball player and really developed her confidence,” said Bertagnolli, who earned his ninth PSAC West Coach of the Year honor last season. Easton posted a career year in 2010, hitting .382 with 14 doubles, nine homers and 47 RBI en route to earning her second-straight All-PSAC West selection. One of the most dangerous hitters in the region, Johnson enters her third season as a starter for the Vulcans. Last year, she hit .296 with nine homers and 36 RBI after being named PSAC West Freshman of the Year in 2009. “Everybody knows she [Johnson] hits the ball very well and is always attacking at the plate,” said Bertagnolli. “She’s also a little faster now and it really shows in the rest of her game.” Daley looks to hit in the leadoff spot again after excelling there last season, setting career highs in average, hits and runs. Junior Kristen McKenzie also is a returner in 2011 and should improve on her numbers from last year when she hit .297 with 17 RBI while starting

RICK BERTAGNOLLI 18th Year at Cal U softball@calu.edu Entering his 18th season at California University of Pennsylvania, Rick Bertagnolli has guided the Cal U softball program into a perennial national contender and placed himself among the elite softball coaches in the country. The Vulcans have reached the NCAA Tournament 15 times with back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 1997 and 1998. Currently in his 27th season as a head coach, Bertagnolli has a career collegiate coaching record of 867-247 (.778) and holds an overall mark of 605-197 (.754) with the Vulcans. He enters the year ranked seventh among active coaches in NCAA Division II in winning percentage and is the winningest coach in all of Cal U sports history. Bertagnolli’s Vulcan teams have appeared in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Game 12 times and set a NCAA record with 88-consecutive conference wins from 1994-99. Numerous Vulcan players have garnered national, regional and conference recognition under Bertagnolli’s direction. He has coached 30 All-Americans, 96 all-region honorees and 115 all-conference selections. In 1998, Bertagnolli helped tutor two-time All-American Danielle Penner, who was named the National Player of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). He has also coached three players who played on the Canadian Senior National Team: Meaggan
Wilton (2000 Sydney Olympics), Megan Timpf (2008 Beijing Olympics) and Jillian Russell (2010 ISF World Championships). The Cal U softball success under Bertagnolli has also been evident in the classroom, as the Vulcans boasted the sixth-highest GPA and led the nation with three ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in 2010. Bertagnolli’s career at Cal U began in 1994 and in his first season the Vulcans recorded a 38-13 record, advanced to the PSAC championship game, and captured the regional championship. After a combined 93 wins the next two seasons, the stage was set for a historic 1997 season. With Penner dominating opponents on the hill, Cal U rolled to a program-best 53-5 record to capture the first Cal U national championship in any sport in school history. In 1998, Cal U became only the fourth (and last) school in Division II softball history to win back-to-back National Championships. The Vulcans registered a 47-7 overall record behind the play of five different All-Americans, including Penner, who was named NFCA Player of the Year after finishing her career with an NCAA record 141 career victories. Bertagnolli and his staff were named NFCA Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year by the NFCA. Since the two National Championships, Cal U has maintained a tradition of excellence by qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 11 times in 12 seasons. The Vulcans also won 13 PSAC West Championships (1994-2004, 2009-10) and qualified for 17-straight PSAC Tournaments (1994-2010) under Bertagnolli. In 2009, Bertagnolli registered his 800th career win as a college coach and last year he earned his 600th victory at Cal U while leading the team to the NCAA Super Regionals. Bertagnolli started his college coaching career at Wabash Valley Junior College for three seasons before serving as head coach at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg for two seasons. Bertagnolli and his wife Jodi have two daughters Ava and Mia.

Stephani Moore begins her fourth season as an assistant coach on the California University of Pennsylvania softball staff after a five-year stint as head coach at Washington & Jefferson, a Division III program in nearby Washington, Pa. Moore is responsible for working with Cal U pitchers and outfielders. While at W&J, Moore elevated the Presidents from a last-place team in the conference to a league title in just four seasons. After a combined 19 wins in her first two seasons, she guided W&J to a 21-win season in 2005. The following season, the Presidents claimed the conference crown with a 25-15 mark, including an appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. She finished her W&J tenure in 2007 following a 1915 season and another selection to the ECAC Championship. The Vulcans continued their reign as a perennial power in the PSAC and NCAA Atlantic Region during the 2010 season, as they finished ranked No. 12 in the NFCA poll and only two wins shy of advancing to the College World Series. Cal U finished the season with a 37-14 overall record and 15-1 league mark, marking the 13th PSAC West title under head coach Rick Bertagnolli. The 37 victories were the most in a season since the 2000 campaign. Cal U earned three of the four post-season PSAC individual awards and featured eight All-PSAC West selections. Bertagnolli received PSAC West Coach of the Year for the 10th time in his career after earning his 600th victory with the Vulcans in 2010. Senior Lauren Shaheen was tabbed the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year and sophomore shortstop Jillian Russell was named the PSAC West Player of the Year. Russell led the team with 11 homers and was among the team leaders with a .313 average, 13 doubles, 38 RBI and 38 runs scored. of success under leadership from then head coach Linda Kalafatis. Kalafatis, a former allregion performer for the Vulcans, took over the program in 1989. In her five seasons from 1989-93, Kalafatis tallied a 175-53 overall record. During her coaching career at Cal U she led the Vulcans to five-straight PSAC West championships, made the NCAA Tournament on three occasions and captured one PSAC crown. During her time as head coach, Kalafatis also had the opportunity to coach some great student-athletes who earned second team AllAmerican honors. These three student-athletes include Stacy Eppinger who is tied for the most doubles at Cal U with 50, Lori Burkholder the alltime school leader in stolen bases with 73 and Lauren Mitchell who is still in the top five in both total hits and triples. In addition to these three All-Americans, she had seven other all-region honorees suit up in a Vulcan uniform. Not only have these young women had great careers on the field here at Cal U, but many of these Vulcan greats have also gone on to coach in the collegiate ranks. Becky Mezyk, Penner, Maggie Fricko, Wilton, Christy Cameron, and Sue Kunkle are a few former Vulcans who went into the coaching ranks. Numerous others have also coached at the high school and club levels as well. In addition to these Vulcans continuing their softball careers outside of Cal U by entering the coaching ranks, two former Vulcans made the ultimate dream in any sport by competing for their country at the international level by being selected for their country’s Olympic team. Wilton participated in the 2000 games held in Sydney and Megan Timpf played in the 2008 Beijing games. Both of these former Cal U standouts played for Team Canada. As time goes on, the softball program at California will continue to produce quality student-athletes both on and off the field. As the 2011 season is upon us, we wish the Vulcans the best of luck in their goal of capturing another conference championship and success on the national level.
2011 PREVIEW
Originally tabbed “women’s baseball,” the sport of softball has held a strong presence on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania. Dating back as early as 1934, records show that many young women participated in softball at the intramural level. However as time passed bye, it was not until the mid-1960’s when softball began to make a name for itself on campus. From the mid60’s throughout the early 1970’s participation in the softball intramural program saw a steady increase of women and the sport itself was garnering attention throughout the country. Very few small colleges or universities can boast that one of their athletic programs have won two national championships and produced two Olympians. However, the softball program at Cal U is able to do just that. Longtime head coach Rick Bertagnolli took over a solid program in 1994 and has turned it into one of the nation’s elite. During his 17year tenure, Bertagnolli has produced 96 NFCA All-Region athletes, 30 NFCA All-Americans and two Olympians. The combination of these talented student-athletes, along with the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with the program has resulted in five conference titles, five regional titles and two NCAA Division II National Championships in 1997 and 1998, while also earning National Coach of the Year honors both seasons. Since the 1994 season, numerous Vulcan greats have graced Lilly Field. Two of the alltime greats are Danielle Penner, a three-time All American and National Player of the Year in 1998, and Lith Webb, a four-time All American who still holds school records for batting average, hits, doubles, runs scored, total bases, and sacrifices. In addition to these two Vulcan greats, there were 23 other NFCA All-Americans at Cal U from 1994-2004. During this time period the Vulcans tallied an astonishing 194-16 PSAC West record. Other All-Americans and game changing performers in this time period include; three-time All-American Jen Wagner, Kimmie Miller who led the NCAA in batting average in 2004, Meaggan Wilton a two-time All-American, Kristin Heslop who still holds the home run and RBI records at Cal U, along with Tara Douglas and Daysha Grimes who garnered first team AllAmerica honors in 1998 and 2002. Prior to the Bertagnolli era at Cal U, the Vulcan program experienced a great deal

HISTORY
ABOUT CAL U
O
riginating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 200809 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest footballplaying conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.
While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “ScholarAthletes” for maintaining a gradepoint average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa. elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan softball. I am confident that Coach Rick Bertagnolli, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the softball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final
standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 studentathletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.
On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science President & Mrs. Armenti in Multi-Media Technology;
The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Lilly Field. Softball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 20102011 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
