2011 REVIEW
on the team with 39 RBI and tied for second on the team with seven homers while serving as the team’s primary leadoff hitter. A first-team all-state selection in high school, freshman Breanna Morris is the projected starter at shortstop. Fellow newcomers Katie Natter and Madison Yanek figure to see time throughout the season at the corner infield positions. Senior Kristen McKenzie will anchor the outfield after starting all but one game last season. As a junior, she posted career highs with a .338 average, eight doubles, 21 RBI and 21 runs scored. Sophomore Stephani Ellis also returns to the outfield after making 30 starts last season. After a strong fall practice, she figures to drastically improve on her .237 average from last year. Perhaps the top freshman power prospect since Johnson and Russell, Natter looks to post impressive offensive numbers while starting in center field. With the ability to hit for a high average, fellow freshman Shelby Heyd figures to see significant time as a corner outfielder and designated player in 2012. Sophomore Paige Onuska returns as a valuable defensive replacement and pinch-runner. In addition to Johnson, freshman Paige Johnson looks to see plenty of action at catcher this year. She was a member of two state championship teams while playing in New Jersey. The Vulcans return a pair of talented pitchers in sophomores Kaitlyn Schilling and Hope Spancake. The duo combined to record nearly 25 wins and pitch over 200 innings last season. Spancake received AllPSAC West First-Team honors after leading the team in victories, innings pitched and strikeouts. Schilling finished with a team-leading 2.04 ERA and 10 wins while tossing nearly 100 innings as a freshman. Freshman Madison Cashner also looks to see action in the circle as a reliever this season after an impressive fall practice. With the majority of the offensive returning, including Russell and Johnson, and a pair of experience sophomore pitchers, the Vulcans should again challenge for a conference title while continuing their success at the national level.

PLAYERS
The Vulcans narrowly missed posting another 30-win season last year, as they finished 29-14 overall and claimed a third-straight PSAC West title. Cal U also made its 20th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2011. Under 19th-year head coach Rick Bertagnolli, Cal U is again poised for success in the coming year with six returning position starters and a pair of experienced sophomore pitchers. The Vulcans return two of the most prominent power hitters in program history in seniors Jillian Russell and Alyson Johnson. The two-time PSAC West Athlete of the Year, Russell enters her senior season ranked third in school history with 33 career homers. Last year, she tied the single-season school record and finished second in the PSAC with 14 homers. She also established career highs with a .346 average and 50 RBI, which marked the highest total by a Vulcan in over a decade. A three-year starter at shortstop, Russell figures to move to third base in 2012. She has started at third base in recent years while playing for the Canadian Senior National Team. Johnson enters the campaign ranked fourth in school history with 29 homers, including a freshman school record 13 homers in 2009. Last year, she led the team with a career-high .409 average and finished with 14 doubles, seven homers and 29 RBI. After starting over 15 games in the outfield last season, Johnson looks to return her primary position of catcher in 2012. With Johnson behind the plate, sophomore Natalie Wideman opens the spring as the probable starter at second base. A versatile athlete, Wideman became the first freshman catcher to earn All-PSAC West First Team honors since 2006. She finished the year hitting .348 with eight doubles, 23 RBI and 28 runs scored. Wideman helped the Canadian Junior National Team place fifth at the ISF Junior World Championships in December. In another position change, sophomore Shelby Lia will start the year at first base. Lia was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year in 2011 while starting at second base. She finished second

Entering his 19th season at California University of Pennsylvania, Rick Bertagnolli has guided the Cal U softball program into a perennial national contender and placed himself among the elite softball coaches in the country. The Vulcans have reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times with back-toback NCAA National Championships in 1997 and 1998. Currently in his 28th season as a head coach, Bertagnolli has a career collegiate coaching record of 896261 (.774) and holds an overall mark of 634-211 (.750) with the Vulcans. He enters the year tied for sixth among active coaches in NCAA Division II in winning percentage and is the winningest coach in all of Cal U sports history. Bertagnolli’s Vulcan teams have appeared in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Game 12 times and set a NCAA record with 88-consecutive conference wins from 1994-99. Numerous Vulcan players have garnered national, regional and conference recognition under Bertagnolli’s direction. He has coached 28 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Americans, 70 NFCA all-region honorees and over 100 all-conference players. In 1998, Bertagnolli helped tutor two-time All-American Danielle Penner, who was named the National
Player of the Year by the NFCA. He has also coached three players who played on the Canadian Senior National Team: Meaggan Wilton (2000 Sydney Olympics), Megan Timpf (2008 Beijing Olympics) and Jillian Russell (2010 ISF World Championships, 2011 Pan American Games). The Cal U softball success under Bertagnolli has also been evident in the classroom, as he has mentored seven Academic All-Americans, including three in 2010. Bertagnolli’s career at Cal U began in 1994 and in his first season the Vulcans recorded a 38-13 record, advanced to the PSAC Championship Game and captured the regional championship. After a combined 93 wins the next two seasons, the stage was set for a historic 1997 season. With Penner dominating opponents in the circle, the Vulcans rolled to a programbest 53-5 record to capture the first national championship in any sport in school history. In 1998, Cal U became only the fourth (and last) school in NCAA Division II softball history to win backto-back National Championships. The Vulcans registered a 47-7 overall record behind the play of five different All-Americans, including Penner, who was named NFCA Player of the Year after finishing her career with an NCAA record 141 career victories. Bertagnolli and his staff were named NFCA

The Vulcans also won 14 PSAC West Championships (19942004, 2009-11) and qualified for 18-consecutive PSAC Tournaments (1994-2011) under Bertagnolli. Bertagnolli registered his 800th career win as a college coach in 2009, and he earned his 600th victory at Cal U while leading the team to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2010. Bertagnolli started his college coaching career at Wabash Valley Junior College for three seasons before serving as head coach at South Carolina-Spartanburg for two seasons. Bertagnolli and his wife Jodi have two daughters Ava and Mia.

2012 PREVIEW
State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into
NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

19-TIME PSAC WEST CHAMPIONS • SIX-TIME PSAC CHAMPIONS • 20 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES • TWO-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
HISTORY Originally tabbed “women’s baseball,” the sport of softball has held a strong presence on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania. Dating back as early as 1934, records show that many young women participated in softball at the intramural level. However as time passed by, it was not until the mid-1960’s when softball began to make a name for itself on campus. From the mid-1960’s throughout the early 1970’s, participation in the softball intramural program saw a steady increase of women and the sport itself was garnering attention throughout the country. Very few small colleges or universities can boast that one of their athletic programs have won two national championships and produced two Olympians. However, the softball program at Cal U is able to do just that. Longtime head coach Rick Bertagnolli took over a solid program in 1994 and has turned it into one of the nation’s elite. During his 18-year tenure, Bertagnolli has produced nearly 75 NFCA All-Region athletes, almost 30 NFCA All-Americans and two Olympians. The combination of these talented student-athletes, along with the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with the program has resulted in five conference titles, five regional titles and two NCAA Division II National Championships in 1997 and 1998, while also earning National Coach of the Year honors both seasons. Since the 1994 season, numerous Vulcan greats have graced Lilley Field. Two of the all-time greats are Danielle Penner, a three-time All American and National Player of the Year in 1998, and Lith Webb, a four-time All American who still holds school records for batting average, hits, doubles, runs scored, total bases and sacrifices. In addition to these two Vulcan greats, there were 23 other NFCA All-Americans at Cal U from 1994-2004. During this time period the Vulcans tallied an astonishing 194-16 PSAC West record. Other All-Americans and game-changing performers in this time period include: three-time All-American Jen Wagner, Kimmie Miller who led the NCAA in batting average in 2004, Meaggan Wilton a two-time All-American, Kristin Heslop who still holds the home run and RBI records at Cal U, along
The Vulcans captured the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1997 and 1998, compiling an overall record of 100-12 (.893) in those seasons.
with Tara Douglas and Daysha Grimes who garnered first team All-America honors in 1998 and 2002. Prior to the Bertagnolli era at Cal U, the Vulcan program experienced a great deal of success under leadership from then-head coach Linda Kalafatis. Kalafatis, a former all-region performer for the Vulcans, took over the program in 1989. In her five seasons from 1989-93, Kalafatis tallied a 175-53 overall record. During her coaching career at Cal U she led the Vulcans to five-straight PSAC West championships, made the NCAA Tournament on three occasions and captured one PSAC crown. During her time as head coach, Kalafatis also had the opportunity to coach some great studentathletes who earned second team All-American honors. These three student-athletes include Stacy Eppinger who is tied for the most doubles at Cal U with 50, Lori Burkholder the all-time school leader in stolen bases with 73 and Lauren Mitchell who is still in the top five in both total hits and triples. In addition to these three All-Americans, she had seven other all-region honorees suit up in a Vulcan uniform. Not only have these young women had great careers on the field here at Cal U, but many of these Vulcan greats have also gone on to coach in the collegiate ranks. Becky Mezyk, Penner, Maggie Fricko, Wilton, Christy Cameron, and Sue Kunkle are a few former Vulcans who went into the coaching ranks. Numerous Danielle Penner finished her career as the all-time wins leader in others have also coached at NCAA Division II history with 141 victories. the high school and club levels

as well. In addition to these Vulcans continuing their softball careers outside of Cal U by entering the coaching ranks, two former Vulcans made the ultimate dream in any sport a reality by competing for their country at the international level by being selected for their country’s Olympic team. Wilton participated in the 2000 games held in Sydney and Megan Timpf played in the 2008 Beijing games. Both of these former Cal U standouts played for Team Canada. In 2011, Jillian Russell tied the single-season school record with 14 homers. Russell repeated as the PSAC West Player of the Year and became the first NFCA All-American since 2004. Bertagnolli earned PSAC West Coach of the Year honors for the third-straight year and 11th time in his career. As time goes on, the softball program at California will continue to produce q u a l i t y studentathletes both on and off the field. As the 2012 season is upon us, we wish the Vulcans the best of luck in their goal of capturing a n o t h e r conference championship and success The softball program won the on the first National Championship national level. in school history in 1997.

elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan softball. I am confident that Coach Rick Bertagnolli, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the softball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second placefinish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the Fall 2011 semester, a total of 239 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 240 student-athletes earned the honor during previous fall semester. For the 11th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Lilley Field. Softball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2012 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
