DR. ANGELO ARMENTI, JR. W

elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan swimming. I am confident that Coach Ed Denny, his staff and the players will make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Trophy is emblematic of athletic supremacy the PSAC — the premier Division II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for the magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 167 California University of Pennsylvania student athletes, representing all sports were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natalie Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Swimming and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were athletes have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2009-2010 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

HEAD COACH Ed Denny enters his eighth season as head coach of the California University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team after a banner 2008-09 campaign. Last year, the Vulcans finished a programbest third at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Ed Denny Conference denny@calu.edu ( P S A C ) Championships and qualified a school-record nine swimmers for the NCAA Championships. For his efforts, Denny was selected the PSAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. During his time with the program, Denny has coached three individual NCAA All-Americans, highlighted by five-time AllAmerican Ester Bosch. Last year, Cal U also featured its first-ever All-American relay team (200 freestyle). In addition to their success in the pool, Denny’s teams have also excelled in the classroom. The Vulcans have been honored as a Scholar All-American team for sevenconsecutive years by the College Swimming Coaches Assocation of American (CSCAA). Cal U featured eight PSAC Scholar-Athletes last year and also had three CSCAA Scholar All-Americans. Originally from Derry, Pa., Denny began his swimming career at Kiski Prep School before enrolling at West Virginia University. He completed his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from WVU in 1982 before earning his master’s degree in education from Long Island University in 1991. With the Mountaineers, Denny was a NCAA Qualifier in both the 1500 (1980) and 1650 (1981) freestyle. A co-captain in 1981, he still holds WVU natatorium records in the 1,000 (9:22.01 - 1979) and 1,650 (15:34.07 - 1980) freestyle races. He also held the Penn State University natatorium record in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:23.40) for 19 years and still holds the Atlantic-10 Conference record in the 1,650-yard freestyle at 15:34.07, which he set in 1980.

During his time at WVU, Denny placed third in the 1,500 freestyle at the 1978 National Junior Olympics in Santa Clara, Calif. In 1980, Denny placed 13th in the 1,500 freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Irvine, Calif. He started his coaching career in 1983 as graduate assistant with the Mountaineers under head coach Kevin Gilson. A year later, Denny joined the coaching staff at the U.S. Naval Academy. After four seasons at Navey, he returned to Kiski as head coach in 1988. A year later, he returned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy, where he stayed for three seasons. Following his time at the Military Academy, accepted the head-coaching position of the men’s and women’s swiming programs at Fairmont State University (W.Va.). Denny guided the Fighting Falcon swim programs from their transition of NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1995. Under Denny’s leadership, Fairmont State had 19 swimmers earn NAIA All-America honors in 59 events from 1993-95, including the men’s 200 butterfly national champion in 1995. After the transition to NCAA Division II, Denny guided nine of his swimmers to individual All-America recognition in 29 events from 1995-2001 and an 11th place finish in the team standings by the 1999 women’s team. The Fairmont State teams were recognized for their exemplary individual and team academic achievements by the CSCAA five-straight years. Denny resides in California.

SCHEDULE

riginating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 200809 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
