level in recent years. “Each year our goal is to finish in the top five, in addition to being the best of the women’sonly teams, said ninth-year head coach Ed Denny. Of the 13 schools that sponsor swimming in the PSAC, six are women’s-only programs. Last season, the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team finished fifth at the PSAC Championships and qualified six swimmers to the NCAA National Championships. On the national stage, the Vulcans featured an All-American relay team and an individual AllAmerican. Cal U returns a trio of swimmers with national experience led by All-American Melissa Gates. Last season, Gates set a combined three school records, several pool records and earned NCAA All-America laurels as both an individual and as a member of 800 freestyle relay. “Melissa is making changes to her technique within a practice session and finding new ways to go faster with less effort,” said Denny. “With Melissa, I think it’s always a case that anything she wants to do she can; she made it a goal to win the 50 free at the NCAA and I’m not putting it past her.” In the 50 freestyle last year, she finished second at the PSAC Championships only six-hundreths of a second behind eventual-National Champion Jackie Borkowski. At her second NCAA Championships in as many seasons, Gates became the fourth different All-American in program history by finishing fourth in the 50 freestyle. Perhaps Gates’ biggest competition this season in the 50 freestyle will be teammate and freshman Clarissa Enslin, who hails from South Africa. “If there is a word bigger than impressed, then that is what we our with Clarissa,” said Denny. “She has adapted so well to yards coming from an all-meter background. Clarissa is so smooth and effortless in the pool.” Sophomore Georgia Emert returns after a stellar rookie season. Last year, she set the school records in both the 200 and 400 IM and should challenge for the PSAC title in both events in 2011. “She could be on one of the dominant 400 IM swimmers in the conference, if not the domi-
nant swimmer,” said Denny. “Georgia could be successful in any number of events.” Junior Christina Lysun has been impressive in preseason practices this season. “Christina has come in much better shape than in her first two years and I’m confident that she will qualify for the conference meet well pas the qualifying times,” said Denny. “When she does things correctly and the way she is cable of doing them, she could score at the conference meet.” With the departure of six-time All-American Ester Bosch and the losses of other swimmers, several relay positions are now vacant. “We have communicated to the girls that have the potential to be on the relays that spots are up for grabs,” said assistant coach Jessica Siegele. “It has created competition in practice and pushes everyone to get better.” “Clarissa will take Ester’s place on the relays,” said Denny. “I expect Georgia and Stephanie Bolt to contend on the 400 and 800 free relay, while Caitlyn Sirkoch could again be on the 200 relay with the fourth position wide open.” The Vulcans feature a varied scheduled from those in years past with a lot more competition on back-to-back days. “Our job is to make sure they are in good physical condition, but when you race backto-back then it’s a case of how strong you are mentally,” said Denny. “The way our schedule is set up this year, maybe we will be able work on that part of it better than in past years.” With the emergence of several young swimmers last year and in preseason practice, the Vulcans should again be near the top of the PSAC and be well represented at the NCAA National Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

The Vulcans have developed into one of the top contenders in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and a viable program on the national

Ninth Year at Cal U denny@calu.edu Ed Denny enters his ninth season as head coach of the California University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team after the best two years in program history. Last year, the Vulcans finished fifth at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships and qualified six swimmers for the NCAA National Championships. During his time with the program, Denny has coached five individual NCAA All-Americans, highlighted by six-time All-American Ester Bosch. Last year, Cal U also featured its second-ever AllAmerican relay team (800 freestyle). In addition to their success in the pool, Denny’s teams have also excelled in the classroom. The Vulcans have been honored as a Scholar AllAmerican team for eight-consecutive years by the College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA). Cal U featured four PSAC Scholar-Athletes last year. Originally from Derry, Pa., Denny began his swimming career at Kiski Prep School before enrolling at West Virginia University. He completed his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from WVU in 1982 before earning his master’s degree in education from Long Island University in 1991. With the Mountaineers, Denny was a NCAA Qualifier in the 1650 freestyle in both 1980 and 1981. A co-captain in 1981, he still holds WVU natatorium records in the 1,000 (9:22.01 - 1979) and 1,650 (15:34.07 - 1980) freestyle races. He also held the Penn State University natatorium

record in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:23.40) for 19 years and still holds the Atlantic-10 Conference record in the 1,650-yard freestyle at 15:34.07, which he set in 1980. During his time at WVU, Denny placed third in the 1,500 freestyle at the 1978 National Junior Olympics in Santa Clara, Calif. In 1980, Denny placed 13th in the 1,500 freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Irvine, Calif. He started his coaching career in 1983 as graduate assistant with the Mountaineers under head coach Kevin Gilson. A year later, Denny joined the coaching staff at the U.S. Naval Academy. After four seasons at Navy, he returned to Kiski as head coach in 1988. A year later, he returned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy, where he stayed for three seasons. Following his time at the Military Academy, accepted the head-coaching position of the men’s and women’s swimming programs at Fairmont State University (W.Va.). Denny guided the Fighting Falcon swim programs from their transition of NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1995. Under Denny’s leadership, Fairmont State had 19 swimmers earn NAIA All-America honors in 59 events from 1993-95, including the men’s 200 butterfly national champion in 1995. After the transition to NCAA Division II, Denny guided nine of his swimmers to individual All-America recognition in 29 events from 1995-2001 and an 11th-place finish in the team standings by the 1999 women’s team. The Fairmont State teams were recognized for their exemplary individual and team academic achievements by the CSCAA five-straight years. Denny resides in California with his wife Carolann.

W h i l e completing her masters at UCF, she served as an assistant coach with the Trinity Preparatory School and Trinity Preparatory Aquatics in Winter Park, Fla. In Florida, Siegele also worked as a camp counselor at Pine Crest Swim Camp in Fort Lauderdale. Siegele started her college coaching career at Ashland University of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in 2007. In her season with the Eagles, eight athletes qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships. Prior to her work at Ashland, she served an internship with the United States Association of Blind Athletes. A native of Wexford, Pa., and product of North Allegheny High School, she competed at the 2003 Irish National Swimming Championships in Belfast, Ireland and won seven gold medals.

Jessica Siegele is entering her second season as an assistant coach with the California University of Pennsylvania swimming program in 2010-11. She comes to the program after serving as an assistant coach with the University of Pittsburgh. In 2008-09, the Panthers women’s swimming & diving team finished third at the Big East Championships. Siegele worked with swimmers in the butterfly and backstroke. Siegele was a four-year letterman and twoyear captain on the swimming & diving team at the University of Kentucky from 2002-05. With the Wildcats, she set the school record in the 100 backstroke and is also among the school’s all-time leaders in the 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly. She received NCAA All-America Honorable Mention in 2005 as a member of the school record-setting 200 and 400 medley relay teams. A two-time member of the SEC All-Academic team, Siegele graduated from Kentucky in 2005 before earning her masters degrees in sport business management and business administration from the University of Central Florida in 2007.

After posting the most successful season in school history last year, the Vulcans posted another impressive campaign in 2009-10 by finishing fifth at the PSAC Championships and 19th at the NCAA Championships. Only a sophomore, Melissa Gates earned NCAA All-America honors as an individual in the 50 freestyle after finishing fourth overall with a time of 23.32 seconds at the NCAA Championships. She also earned All-America Honorable Mention by finishing ninth overall in 100 freestyle at the NCAA Championships. Gates posted her best time of the season in the 50 freestyle at the PSAC Championships, touching the wall with a school-record time of 23.27 seconds. The 800 freestyle relay of Gates, senior Rachel Kurta, freshman Georgia Emert and graduate student Ester Bosch also earned All-America status by finishing eighth at the NCAA Cham-
pionships in a school-record time of 7 minutes, 38.88 seconds. The 800 freestyle relay is only the second All-American relay team in school history. In the 200 freestyle relay at the NCAA Championships, the quartet of Gates, Kurta, freshman Caitlyn Sirkoch and Bosch finished 11th overall to receive All-America Honorable Mention. As an individual, Emert established a pair of school records in the 200 and 400 IM as a freshman. At the PSAC Championships, she finished second overall in the finals of 400 IM with a record time of 4:32.94. The Vulcans qualified six swimmers for the 2010 NCAA Championships in Canton, Ohio.

Cal U student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2009-10 season, five PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and two NCAA regional trophies with nine team and 14 individual appearances in NCAA post-season play. The success continued as Cal U finished second in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 205 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-straight semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Cal U also featured 16 ESPN The Magazine Academic Georgia Emert was one of 14 Vulcans to All-District selections highlighted by four Academic Allmake the AD Honor Roll last year. Americans. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletics and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible for the academic honor, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport. Cal U ranked sixth among the 16-member conference with 141 scholar-athletes. The men’s soccer team had seven players earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete status.

riginating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest footballplaying conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “ScholarAthletes” for maintaining a gradepoint average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan swimming. I am confident that Coach Ed Denny, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the cross country tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final
standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 studentathletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.
On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirtytwo individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and fouryear graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media President & Mrs. Armenti Technology; Physical
The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Swimming and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010-11 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.
