how you get better,” said Montana. “It’s no secret that you get better by playing better opponents - you see a faster ball and have to react a little faster.” The Vulcans will certainly look towards junior transfers Annabel Pieschl and Franziska Steinhardt in those competitive matches. Pieschl comes to the program after playing the last two seasons at Stony Brook (N.Y.) and Steinhardt played at Illinois State. “They [Pieschl and Steinhardt] are such hard workers and good kids,” said Montana. “Not only are they great tennis players, both are great leaders and student-athletes. They absolutely make our team stronger.” During the fall season, Pieschl captured titles in both singles and doubles at the PSAC Individual Championships. She opens 2011 ranked as the top contender for the No. 1 spot in the line-up and ranked No. 20 in the country. Steinhardt also made an immediate impact this fall as a member of the doubles team that won the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships and went undefeated in singles during dual play. Junior Anastassiya Zherdeva and sophomore Jade Pondicas will also contend for spots in the top half of the line-up. Zherdeva finished with 22 wins in singles last year and was chosen as the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch, while Pondicas compiled an impressive 38 combined wins last year while playing only the spring season. The Vulcans also return senior Laurie Navarro and junior Axelle Fernandez, both of whom will provide key veteran leadership and see extensive time on the court. Navarro set a career high last year with 15 doubles victories following titles at the ITA Atlantic Regional and PSAC Championships, while Fernandez totaled a combined 40 victories in singles during her first two seasons. Junior Mariana Oliveira will also help Cal U at the bottom of the line-up and contend for playing time. Cal U has dominated within the conference in recent years, winning four-straight titles, and has made six-consecutive NCAA Tournaments. With quality, veteran players throughout the lineup, the Vulcans look to make another run to the quarterfinals and beyond in 2011. “I think we are right there with the top teams in the country. Our players are just as competitive as they are and we play a tougher schedule than a lot of those schools,” said Montana. “I think we have done everything we can to prepare ourselves properly and now we just have to try to make our luck a little bit [in the tournament].”
2010-11 2010-11 PREVIEW PREVIEW
The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team has firmly established itself as a national power with three quarterfinal appearances in the NCAA Tournament in the last four years. The 2011 season should only strengthen the reputation of the Vulcans, who return six players from last season and added two transfers from NCAA Division I programs. “We have a lot of great things going on here at Cal U and we have gotten to the point where the great players are contacting us,” said head coach Pablo Montana, who was selected as the ITA National Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2010. “We always have been fortunate to get the best players from their respective countries to help us compete at the national level.” In a change from recent years, the Vulcans will be able to rely on quality experience as they have one senior, six juniors and an experienced sophomore on the roster. “This is a very experienced team because we played so many matches last year and this fall,” said Montana. “They know my system and philosophy and they know what we are trying to accomplish. It’s nice to have a group of girls that believe in the same goals you do.” Senior Nina Kowalski returns for her final season after earning All-PSAC West honors as a doubles player in each of her previous three seasons. A native of Germany, she has won over 70 matches in doubles play and totaled over 20 wins in each of the past three years. In the fall of 2009, Kowalski was a member of the doubles team that won both the ITA Atlantic Regional and PSAC Championships. Kowalski, like virtually every tennis player with the Cal U program, has excelled both athletically and academically, as the program has been honored as an ITA All-Academic Team in each of the last seven seasons. During the Fall 2010 semester, the tennis program boasted the highest team GPA among varsity sports at Cal U. “I have a great bunch of girls that are so dedicated on the court and in the classroom,” said Montana, who is in his ninth year with the program. “When you have that type of discipline in the classroom, it transitions on the tennis court. They take being a student-athlete very seriously.” The Vulcans will certainly be challenged on the court in 2011 with eight dual matches against NCAA Division I programs and five matches versus the top programs in Florida over spring break. “We have added a lot of Division I schools [to our schedule] this year and we will go down to Florida to play the best teams because that’s

PABLO MONTANA Ninth Year at Cal U montana@calu.edu Entering his ninth season as head coach with the California University of Pennsylvania tennis program, Pablo Montana has built the Vulcans into one of the elite collegiate tennis programs in the nation. Montana, the 2007 and 2010 Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year, has posted a combined dual record of 169-48 overall (.779) and 54-15 (.783) in PSAC play to become the winningest coach in program history. The Vulcans have earned a berth in the NCAA Championships in seven of the last eight seasons, including quarterfinal appearances in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Additionally, Montana has coached four All-Americans in the last four years in Yumi Matsuto, Inga Chilingaryan, Helena VanEysendeyk and Jutta Bornefeld. In 2008, Cal U capped one of Montana’s finest seasons with an appearance in the Round of 16, where it fell to West Florida by a 5-1 count to finish No. 9 in the ITA rankings with a 26-3 overall record. The Vulcans advanced to the round of 16 in Houston, Texas, with first- and second-round wins over Saint Michael’s (Vt.) and Bloomsburg, respectively. That same season, Chilingaryan and VanEysendeyk earned doubles All-America status by finishing No. 2 in the ITA doubles ranking after posting a 20-1 record. The pair also received AllAmerica laurels in singles action with VanEysendeyk finishing No. 4 in the ITA rankings. In 2007, the Vulcans advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. For his effort in guiding Cal U to a school-best 28-2 record and a No. 6 ranking by the ITA, Montana received Wilson/ITA National and Regional Coach of the Year accolades. Under his coaching, the

Vulcans featured its first All-American doubles team in recent program history with Chilingaryan and Matsuto. Montana guided Cal U to the NCAA Championships in his first season with the program in 2003 with a 12-9 overall record. Over the next three seasons, the Vulcans posted at least 17 victories with two NCAA Championship postseasons. In addition to the success on the court, Montana has guided the program into an elite program in the classroom. In each of the last seven seasons, the Vulcans have earned ITA AllAcademic honors with 17 different players receiving ITA Scholar-Athlete status. A tennis standout in college, Montana was a two-time All-American at the University of Tennessee (1993-96). He was a three-time AllSoutheastern Conference (SEC) selection, earning first-team honors in both singles and doubles play in 1996. Montana and doubles partner Chris Mahony were the No. 4 ranked collegiate doubles team in the country at the end of his junior year, posting 23 victories. Montana and Mahony rank second in Volunteers’ history with 75 career doubles wins. After his collegiate career was finished, he served as a national coach with the United States Tennis Association in 1999. In his first college coaching experience, Montana served as the assistant coach with Vanderbilt University for three seasons. While with the Commodores, he helped coach Andrew Nisker, who in 2000 became the first Vanderbilt player to win an SEC Championship since 1982. During Montana’s tenure at Vanderbilt, the Commodores were ranked as high as No. 28 in 1999, the highest mark in the history of the program to that point. A native of Miami, Montana completed his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Regents (N.Y.) in 1998 before he earned his master’s degree from Cal U in 2004. Montana and his wife Karen reside in Canonsburg, Pa., with their two children, Alexis and Silas.

2010-11 PREVIEW
Under the direction of ITA National Coach of the Year Pablo Montana, the Vulcans captured a fourth-straight PSAC Championship and made their third appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in the last four years. Cal U finished the season with a 24-6 overall record and was the top team in the PSAC West standings for the sixth-straight year. Cal U featured the top player in the conference for the fifth-consecutive season, as freshman Jutta Bornefeld (above) was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. Playing only the spring, she finished the year as the 19thranked singles player in the country to earn ITA All-America honors after she posted a 20-2 mark in singles action. Sophomore Alina Stanila led the team with 27 victories in singles play and received All-PSAC West honors in singles action, while
Bornefeld and junior Nina Kowalski received AllPSAC West laurels as a doubles team. Newcomer Jade Pondicas and sophomore Anastassiya Zherdeva led all doubles teams with 14 wins. The Vulcans also added former SEC Rookie of the Year and ITA All-American Julia Cohen in 2010 and she finished the year with an 8-1 combined record in limited action. In the fall, juniors Nina Kowalski and Laurie Navarro captured the doubles titles at both the PSAC Individual and ITA Atlantic Regional Championships. Stanila earned the singles crowns at both fall individual championships. Cal U was also named an ITA AllAcademic Team for the seventh-straight year and featured six ITA Scholar-Athletes. In addition to the academic honor from the ITA, Kowalski (below) earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Third-Team.

PSAC O
riginating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.
While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa. elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan women’s tennis. I am confident that Coach Pablo Montana and the players will continue to build upon the tennis tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final
standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 studentathletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.
On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirtytwo individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Tennis and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010-11 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
