The Vulcans feature virtually a new roster this season with only one senior and five newcomers, but should again challenge on the national stage this spring. Led by two-time ITA National Coach of the Year Pablo Montana, Cal U has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament five times in the last six seasons. The Vulcans have proven to be the premier program in the PSAC, winning six-consecutive league titles. In each of those years, Cal U has featured the top player in the conference. Senior Jade Pondicas is the only returning upperclassman for the Vulcans. She was selected the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch last season after earning All-PSAC status in singles and doubles as a sophomore. Pondicas has been nationally-ranked in singles in each of the last two years while primarily playing the second and third positions. However with the many additions, she looks to play at the fifth slot as a senior and enters the spring with over 75 career victories. Junior transfer Lucie Sipkova will likely play at first singles. She recorded an impressive fall by winning the PSAC Championships titles in singles and doubles. At Oklahoma Christian, Sipkova was a two-time NAIA First-Team All-American and a Capital One Academic All-American. Freshman Alexandra Borgenhoff looks to play at the second slot after capturing the singles title over Pondicas at the ITA Regional Championships. She opens the spring as the top-ranked singles player in the region and No. 20 in the country. After playing last season in the bottom half of the lineup, sophomore Ramon Czakon figures to play at the third position this spring. She led the team last year with 27 wins in singles and lost only twice in dual play. Junior Lucie Rey brings NCAA Division I experience to the program after transferring from USF. She looks to play at the fourth slot after posting 10 wins in tournament play during the fall with her only loss coming against Sipkova in the finals of the

PSAC Championships. Last season, Rey played in the bottom half of the singles lineup for the Bulls and posted six victories. Sophomore Jesse Burrell played sparingly last spring and will compete with freshmen Maxime Colen and Elizabeth Guy for time at sixth singles. Colen and Guy joined the program at semester break and will make their debuts this spring. The influx of new talent will also lead to different doubles tandems this season. Czakon and Pondicas both collected over 20 victories last year, including a career-best 31 wins by Pondicas. The duo combined for eight wins in tournaments during the fall with their only losses coming against the duo of Rey and Sipkova. Rey and Sipkova will open the spring as the No. 8 doubles team in the country. During the fall season, the tandem captured the PSAC and ITA Atlantic Regional titles in doubles play and placed sixth at the ITA National Championships. In the spring, Czakon looks to play with Borgenhoff at the second position. Czakon split last season between second and third doubles and was a member of the fourth-ranked doubles team in the region. Borgenhoff will be making her collegiate debut in doubles play during the spring. Pondicas will anchor the team at third doubles and could play with the trio of Burrell, Colen and Guy. Pondicas has a been a member of a nationallyranked doubles team in each of the last two seasons and has totaled 85 wins in her career as a doubles player. Burrell played with three different partners last spring as a freshman. The Vulcans will once again be tested this spring with nearly a dozen dual matches against NCAA Division I opponents, including six versus BIG EAST members. Montana will look to lead one of his most youthful teams to the program’s seventh-straight league title and to challenge the rest of the premier teams in NCAA Division II for a national title.

PSAC

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania

State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island UniversityC.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa. HISTORY Over the last decade, the Vulcans have transformed into the most dominant team in the Atlantic Region and one of the elite programs across NCAA Division II. Leading the transformation has been head coach Pablo Montana, a former two-time AllAmerican doubles player while at Tennessee. For his effort, Montana has been selected the ITA National Coach of the Year twice in his career. In the years preceding his hire, Cal U posted a pair of two-win seasons and the 2001-02 campaign was suspended due to an incomplete roster. Montana made an immediate impact with the program, as the Vulcans qualified for the NCAA Tournament in his first season. Cal U finished the season with a 12-9 overall record and was ranked seventh in the region. After not playing the previous year, sophomores Linda Escobedo and Olga Gonzalez earned All-PSAC honors for the second time in their careers. Cal U built upon the success the following season, compiling an 18-8 mark and ranking sixth in the region. However, the Vulcans finished sixth in the conference and were not selected to the post-season. Escobedo was named to the All-PSAC First-Team for the first time in her career. In 2005, Cal U captured its first PSAC West title in more than a decade and advanced to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament. The Vulcans finished the season with a 17-9 overall record and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. For his efforts, Montana was selected the PSAC West Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. Escobedo, Gonzalez and junior transfer Melissa Anderson each received All-PSAC West First Team honors. A native of Texas, Escobedo was also the recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Regional Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. The award is presented to a player who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. With the addition of Inga Chilingaryan, the Vulcans posted 17 wins in 2006, while repeating as divisional champions and finishing as the runner-up at the PSAC Championships. A dominating player, Chilingaryan posted a 29-1 record in singles and was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. In 2007, Cal U ascended onto the national stage after totaling a school record 28 victories and ranking No. 6 in the country. Montana guided the Vulcans to their first PSAC Championship since 1993 and led the program to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
