Championship and an appearance at the National Championships. Three of the members of that relay return in juniors Sandy Estep, Shakeria Love and Jerica Snedden. Snedden was also a provisional qualifier individually in the 800 meters last season, while Estep will move up to the 400and 800-meters and Love will take part in the 400-meters, 4x100 and the 4x400 relays. Kingdom has several young runners that he feels can immediately step right in on that relay team, as well as in the sprint events. Sophomore Katurrah Hayman-Alston and freshmen Bria Jay, Brittany Sargent and Monique Sims are all capable of coming in and immediately contributing. Kingdom believes that each of those runners is capable of posting sub-60 second times in the 400-meters. On the distance side, school outdoor 5,000-meters record holder sophomore Erin Kling is expected to return after missing the entire cross country season due to injury. Classmate Erika Coffey is also expected to contribute after missing a majority of the fall with an injury. After a strong cross country showing in the fall, junior Brittany Kanach is also expected to contribute to the distance events, along with sophomore Carly Youngeberg and freshman Julia Kubica. In the other events, junior Khyalyani Whitaker is the returning multi-eventer who posted a career-best score in the heptathlon at last year’s PSAC Outdoor Championships. Kingdom also believes that she has what it takes to qualify for the conference championships in the high jump. Senior Danielle Morrison returns in the pole vault after setting the school record a season ago. Kingdom expects sophomore Amber Saunders to qualify for nationals in the high jump. After breaking nearly a dozen school records a season ago, Kingdom believes that the 2011 women’s track & field team can, “not only double that, but add 10 percent more to that total,” roughly 24 records, or more than half of the total number of women’s track & field standards at Cal U.
2011 2011PREVIEW PREVIEW
Head coach Roger Kingdom has seen his fair share of talented track & field athletes. What he sees in this year’s California University of Pennsylvania track & field teams is no different. In 2010, the Vulcans broke 18 school records (seven men, 11 women) and had eight athletes qualify for nationals, including three-time All-American hurdler senior Brice Myers. “Brice is right there,” said Kingdom. “He has the potential to win nationals this year.” Junior Alex Smith is back after breaking the school record in the 800 meters and qualifying for nationals in 2010. “We are all excited to see what Alex can do this season,” said Kingdom. After provisionally qualifying for nationals last season, junior Jordan Boatwright, who holds three school records, is expected to qualify for nationals this season and break his own records. “We have high expectations for Jordan in both the triple jump and the high jump,“ said Kingdom. Freshman Aaron Dinzeo, who came on strong during the cross country season and earned AllPennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) honors, is expected to be impactful in the distance events ranging from the 1,500 meters to the 10K. Kingdom expects both junior Vince Wilson and sophomore Bobby Ralls to have breakout seasons in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, as well as in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. A young, talented group of hurdlers led by sophomore Toby Oduho await just behind Myers. “Toby has the opportunity to finish up right behind Brice, potentially in the top three or four in the conference,” said Kingdom. Joining Dinzeo in the distance events and expected to break out will be sophomores Chris Werner and Gavin Volosky. “Chris is going to excel; he has been right at that door for awhile,” said Kingdom. “Gavin is really going to step up his game after running the 4x800 and 4x400 for us last year along with the 800 meters.” On the women’s side, expectations have never been higher in Kingdom’s years with the program. “This can be our highest finish in the conference in 20 or 30 years. We feel as though we can finish in the top three in the conference,” said the head coach. In 2010, the 4x400-meter relay team broke the school record en route to a PSAC Outdoor

ROGER KINGDOM Seventh Year at Cal U kingdom@calu.edu Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom enters his seventh year working with the cross country and track & field programs at California University of Pennsylvania. Kingdom, the former world and American record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, serves as the Director of the Track & Field and Cross Country programs at Cal U. Kingdom is a five-time United States Outdoor Champion (1985, 1988-90 and 1995) and twotime gold medalist at the Pan Am Games (1983, 1995). He also holds a World Cup gold medal (1989) and won gold at the World University Games in 1989. He remains one of only two runners to ever win consecutive Olympic titles in the 110-meter hurdles (1984 Los Angeles, 1988 Seoul). A native of Georgia, he joined the Cal U athletic program in 2004 before being named interim head track & field coach in March of the following year. Shortly thereafter, he accepted the director position for both the cross country and track & field programs. In his time as head coach, Kingdom has mentored a handful of All-Americans as well as several more Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) indoor and outdoor champions. Four times during his tenure, Cal U
has had the PSAC Track Athlete of the Year and twice the PSAC Most Valuable Athlete. Under Kingdom’s supervision Cal U has had at least one All-American in each season from 2007-2010 including four-time member Christopher Clark (5K and 10K) and three-time honoree Brice Myers (60-meter and 110-meter hurdles). The women’s program has also had two All-Americans, with current assistant coach Danielle Malay receiving honors in the 400-meter hurdles in 2008 and Clare McSweeney earning recognition in the 800-meter dash in 2010. One of the most decorated athletes in Cal U history, Kingdom mentored 14-time PSAC Champion Brad Rager who excelled in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Rager was the two-time PSAC Track Athlete of the Year and was twice named PSAC Most Valuable Athlete. Kingdom is a 2002 graduate from the University of Pittsburgh and played football for the Panthers’ in the 1980s before concentrating his efforts on his track & field career. He set the world record of 12.92 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles in Zurich, Switzerland in 1989. Kingdom retired from active competition in 1998 and in 2005, Kingdom was inducted in to the USA Track & Field (USATF) Hall of Fame.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “ScholarAthletes” for maintaining a gradepoint average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

riginating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 200809 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest footballplaying conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.

elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan Track & Field. I am confident that Coach Roger Kingdom, his staff and the athletes will continue to build upon the track & field tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final
standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 studentathletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.
On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science President & Mrs. Armenti in Multi-Media Technology;
The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Track & Field and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 20102011 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
Angelo Armenti, Jr. President
Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.
