“Megan did a great job on the block last year and we will look to her to add a great deal to our offense this season.” Kelly Fromknecht, a setter and right-side hitter, “has the ability to challenge for the starting spot as a setter and on the right side,” said Burner. Ana Almeida, a native of Brazil, has adjusted to the culture and new environment and hopes to play a bigger role for the Vulcans. “Ana is one of our smartest players and contributes to the ball control aspect on the court,” believes Burner. Two sophomores that Burner think are exciting players and have grown a lot since last season are Brandy Harris and Niki Keno. “It’s been impressive to see how much they have improved,” said Burner. The most improved player in the spring was Chelsea Wilson. Burner says, “She will challenge for position in the middle and continues to improve as her confidence grows.” Two freshmen Burner expects to come in and challenge for playing time right away are Molly Delaney and Abbey Freund. Both played at prominent levels for their high school and club teams and should be able to adjust quickly to the speed of the college game. “Molly and Abbey have amazing work ethics and strong court personalities,” said Burner. Gaby Follmer is a middle hitter standing over 6-0 that has an extremely high ceiling that Burner believes she can reach. Defensive specialist Megan Casey has a head start on her classmates after enrolling in the spring. The Vulcans open up the season at the Lynn (Fla.) Tournament. “We try to schedule challenging competition early and throughout the year in addition to our conference play,” said Burner. “Improving from the beginning of the season to the end will be imperative for us to reach our ultimate goals for this season.”
2010 2010 PREVIEW PREVIEW
Cal U has amassed a record of 111-12 with appearances in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals in each of the past three seasons. Over that same time period the program has won the PSAC title, as well as the NCAA Atlantic Regional each year. Last season, the team finished with a 36-6 overall record and 19-0 mark in PSAC play while also having three players selected to various All-America lists. Despite having graduated four starters from last year’s team, the goals and expectations for 2010 remain the same. “This situation provides an exciting opportunity for our talented, but young, underclassman to step up and earn playing time,” said thirdyear head coach Stephanie Burner. “The hard part to replace is the leadership.” The 2010 edition of Cal U volleyball has a small senior class with only two on the roster: Julie Paronish and Arica Smith. Paronish started at libero last year and defensive specialist the year before. “Julie adds a lot to our communication and leadership on the court,” said Burner. “Arica’s experience is valuable whether she is on the court or on the sideline, as she is able to point things out to her teammates.” The junior class has four players, but provides an experienced group. Bridget Bielich has started at middle hitter each of her first two seasons with the program. “Bridget had a great season for us last year and was one of our strongest players in the post-season,” said Burner. Also back in the junior class is Sara McMullen, a libero/defensive specialist. “Sara is a fast, athletic player with strong technique who will challenge for time at libero,” said Burner. Setter Kortney Eshleman returns for her junior season after filling in last season when the starting setter was injured. “Kortney played against some of the toughest competition on our schedule last year and that experience will help her this season.” The newest member of the junior class is Katya Kopanarova, a transfer from Casper College (Wyo.) originally from Bulgaria. “Katya adds consistency and intelligence to the court.” With eleven sophomores and freshmen on the roster, there will be young, inexperienced players that will have great opportunity to see significant playing time and continue the winning tradition of Cal U volleyball. Meghan Franz was a starter at middle hitter last season and has extensive court experience.

HEAD COACH

STEPHANIE BURNER Third Year at Cal U burner@calu.edu In her first two seasons as head coach, Stephanie Burner has guided the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team to the most wins in school history and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Quarterfinals. She enters her third season as head coach of the Vulcans in 2010 with an impressive 76-8 career record (.905). Burner has led the Vulcans to a third-consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships. In her short time with the program, she has coached three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American setter Renata da Silva and three-time Daktronics Atlantic Region Player of the Year outside hitter Joanna Nist. da Silva, who is now a volunteer assistant with the Vulcans, became the program’s first-ever ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in 2009. Despite being only in her third season with the program, Burner is quite familiar with the PSAC as she was a four-year starter at rival Edinboro (1999-2002). During her playing career, the Fighting Scots posted an 87-41 overall record (.680) and earned four NCAA Tournament berths, highlighted by a quarterfinals appearance during her senior season. A native of Pittsburgh, Burner started her coaching career at Bellwood Antis High School and led the team to two-straight Mountain Conference titles and a 41-6 record in two seasons. The Blue Devils also advanced to the PIAA state playoffs for the first time in school history in 2004 before repeating the feat in 2005. The following year, Burner accepted an assistant coaching position with the University of North Alabama and helped guide the Lions to an appearance in the National Championship match. After starting the season 7-5, UNA
mounted a 28-match win streak to advance to the title game after winning the Gulf South Conference and South Central Regional Tournaments. Burner served as the Lions’ recruiting coordinator and worked with the team’s defensive players and outside hitters. During her collegiate career, Burner was a record-setting outside hitter while playing for Edinboro. She helped the Fighting Scots post three 20-win seasons and advance to the PSAC Championship match in four-consecutive years. During her junior season, she established a then-school record for digs with 565 and was named a Daktronics Second-Team All-American as Edinboro won its second PSAC Tournament title in four years. As a senior captain, Burner broke her own school record by recording 568 digs to help the Fighting Scots advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals and post a 26-9 overall record. She earned All-PSAC West First-Team and All-Atlantic Region honors after finishing her career with the then-school record 1,707 career digs. The Upper St. Clair High School graduate now ranks second in Edinboro history in career digs. She also is among the school’s all-time leaders in total attempts (2,658) and games played (455). In the 2006-07 academic year, Burner was named to the Edinboro all-time volleyball team.

record 634 kills in 2003 as Edinboro posted a 2612 overall record. For her efforts, she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and an AVCA Third-Team All-American. The only AVCA All-American in program history, Walton helped Edinboro post a 91-42 overall record (.684) in her four seasons and the Fighting Scots advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all four years. Walton was a four-time All-PSAC West selection, including a three-time, first-team honoree. After earning her bachelor of science degree in Health and Physical Education, Walton started her coaching career at Littlestown High School in Littlestown, Pa. After two years working with the girls’ junior varsity volleyball program, she accepted the varsity head-coaching responsibility with the Thunderbolts in 2006. A native of Manchester, Pa., Walton also was a volunteer coach at the West Shore YMCA, where she worked with an under-16 club volleyball team. Walton, like Burner, was one of 15 former Fighting Scots named to Edinboro’s all-time volleyball team.
COACHING STAFF
Ashley Walton is in her third season as an assistant coach with the Vulcans, but is certainly no stranger to volleyball in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Walton was a two-time All-American and teammate of head coach Stephanie Burner at rival Edinboro. Walton finished her career with the Fighting Scots (2000-03) as the school’s all-time leader with 1,906 career kills and ranks among the top players in school history with 403 total blocks and 466 games played. She made an immediate impact with Edinboro, earning PSAC West Rookie of the Year and Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year honors after the Fighting Scots advanced to the PSAC Championship match and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. A middle hitter, she helped lead Edinboro to the 2001 PSAC Championship and another NCAA Tournament appearance. As a junior, Walton earned AVCA Third-Team All-America honors after leading the team with 462 kills and 96 blocks as the Fighting Scots advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 1998. Walton then registered a single-season school

Seniors Ashley Moore and Nist both posted over 450 digs in 2009 with Nist registering 21 kill/dig double-doubles in her final season with the Vulcans. 16
For the only the third time in school history (all sports), California University of Pennsylvania completed the rare triple three-peat in volleyball during the 2009 season after winning the PSAC West crown, PSAC Tournament title and NCAA Atlantic Regional championship. Anchored by the play of four veteran senior leaders, the Vulcans finished the season with a 36-6 overall record and a school-record 19 wins in PSAC play. Senior setter Renata da Silva was selected an AVCA All-American for the third-straight year after ranking ninth in the country with 11.49 assists per set. She was also chosen as the PSAC Tournament MVP for a consecutive season and became the first ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in program history. For her career, da Silva finished with an astounding record of 5,507 assists considering she is the only player in school history with 4,000-plus career assists. Outside hitter Joanna Nist also closed her record-setting career in 2009. She was named the PSAC West Player of the Year after finishing her career as the school’s all-time leader in kills, service aces and sets played. Nist was also named the Daktronics Atlantic Regional Player of the Year for the third-straight year. Senior middle hitter Ludmila Amaral earned All-America Honorable Mention from Daktronics and AllPSAC West First-Team laurels after she finished the year among the conference leaders in hitting percentage and blocks. Sophomore Bridget Bielich received All-PSAC West Second-Team accolades after averaging 2.60 kills on a team-best .349 hitting percentage, which ranked third in the league.

Cal U student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2009-10 season, five PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and two NCAA regional trophies with nine team and 14 individual appearances in NCAA post-season play. The success continued as Cal U finished second in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 205 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. HISTORY
ABOUT CAL U
O
riginating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest footballplaying conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “ScholarAthletes” for maintaining a gradepoint average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

ABOUT CAL U

elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan volleyball. I am confident that Coach Stephanie Burner, her staff and the players will continue to build upon the volleyball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final
standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 studentathletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.
On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirtytwo individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and fouryear graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media President & Mrs. Armenti Technology; Physical
The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Volleyball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
