Cal U was perhaps thought to be in a rebuilding mode last season, as the program lacked a proven scorer and head coach Jess Strom was in her first full season. However, Strom led the program to yet another run in the NCAA Tournament and a 22-win season. The Vulcans entered the NCAA Tournament as the seventh seed and recorded a pair of upsets over nationally-ranked teams before falling to the top seed in the Atlantic Regional Championship. Cal U will look to build off last year’s run with four returning starters and corps group of veteran players off the bench. Senior guard Kate Seebohm developed into one of the premier facilitators in the country last season. She received All-PSAC status and establishing career highs in every category after playing sparingly in the 2011-12 due to medical reasons. Seebohm ranked among the top 15 in NCAA Division II in assists last year while playing over 33 minutes per game. Despite the loss of leading scorer and sharpshooter Stephanie Michael, Cal U boasts experienced and talented depth in the backcourt. Senior Ryah Gadson has played over 75 games in her career and possesses the ability to shoot from the perimeter consistently. Junior Chelsea McKnight continues to be a solid presence on defense, as she has totaled nearly 100 steals the last two years. The backcourt depth will be bolstered by the addition of pair of prolific scorers in junior transfer Kaitlynn Fratz and true freshman Miki Glenn. Fratz was a two-year starter at conference-newcomer Pitt-Johnstown, leading the Mountain Cats in scoring both years. She earned All-WVIAC First-Team honors as both a freshman and sophomore and ranked third in the league in scoring last season. At the scholastic level, she set her all-time county record for scoring with over 2,000 points. Glenn was the State Player of the Year in West Virginia after leading her high school to a state championship. She was a three-time first-

team all-state selection and broke her school’s career records for points, assists and steals. Juniors Irina Kukolj and Emma Mahady figure to return to the starting line-up after breakout sophomore campaigns. Kukolj finished fourth on the team in scoring after totaling only 29 points as a true freshman. The Virginia native also ranked third on the team in rebounding with double-digit games. Mahady is the team’s top returning scorer at 9.4 points per game, which nearly doubled her freshman average. The 5-11 Australian started 29 games last season and finished second on the team with 1.7 steals per game The post will again be anchored by seniors Elena Antonenko and Ashley Hines. Antonenko set career highs in every category in her first year as a starter and ranked among the league leaders in blocks for the second-straight year. Despite starting only two games, Hines led the team in rebounding and shot a team-best 56.3 percent from the field. She was tabbed the PSAC West Athlete of the Week in the opening two weeks of the season behind a pair of doubledoubles against the top teams in the WVIAC. Cal U added length and size to its bench this season, as four newcomers are at least 6 feet tall. Sophomore Nia-Tyler Clark joins the program after playing last season at the NCAA Division I level with Chicago State. A former county champion hurdler, Clark averaged five blocks as a senior at the scholastic level in Maryland. Fellow transfer Shanice Clark played in nearly 60 games over the last two years in junior college at Sante Fe in Gainesville, Fla. True freshman Precious Martin was a 1,000-point scorer and an all-state selection while starring at Central Dauphin. With the valuable post-season experience gained from last season and several skilled newcomers joining the program, the Vulcans look to continue their run as one of the prominent teams in the PSAC and Atlantic Region.

KATIE TETZLAW
VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT Second Year at Cal U
ASSISTANT COACH First Year at Cal U tetzlaw@calu.edu With coaching experience at both the NCAA Division II and III levels, Katie Tetzlaw was announced as an assistant coach at Cal U in July. Tetzlaw served last season as an assistant coach at Slippery Rock following a two-year tenure as head coach at Keystone (Pa.), a NCAA Division III program. She also has served as an assistant coach at Bethany (W.Va.), Allegheny and Washington & Jefferson. A native of Pittsburgh, Tetzlaw gained experience in the PSAC and the NCAA Division II level last season as an assistant coach with Slippery Rock. She previously posted a 16-34 overall record as head coach at Keystone. In her second year with the Giants, Tetzlaw guided the program to five-straight victories to close the year and an 11-14 overall record, which nearly equaled the win total from the previous two seasons combined. Tetzlaw was a four-year player and three-year starter at Bethany under then-head coach Jina DeRubbo. During her career, she helped the Bison capture three Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) titles and earned All-PAC Honorable Mention status as a senior. In the 2001-02 campaign, Tetzlaw started 10 games and helped the program tie the then-

She started a career high 25 games two years later, as the Bison broke the school record with a 23-5 overall record. Following her playing career, Tetzlaw served one season as a graduate assistant at Bethany before spending two years as an assistant coach at Allegheny. She helped lead the Gators to a combined 37-17 overall record with only eight combined losses in conference play. Tetzlaw then served three seasons as an assistant coach under DeRubbo at Washington & Jefferson. The Presidents reached the NCAA Tournament in each of her last two seasons after winning the ECAC South Region Championship in 2007-08. During her time at W&J, Tetzlaw worked with back-to-back PAC Player of the Year recipients in Emily Hays (2008-09) and Kennan Killeen (2009-10). A product of North Catholic, Tetzlaw earned her undergraduate degree physical education from Bethany in 2004 and completed her master’s degree in sport management from Cal U in 2009.
