starting defenders return led by Junior Kayla Klimasko who returns for her third year as a starter in the defensive backfield. Klimasko was voted All-PSAC West and NSCAA All-Region in her first two years with the program. Alvine believes she is a ‘pillar of strength’ and has grown into one of the best defenders in the conference and region in her time at Cal U. Joining Klimasko in the backfield is a trio of juniors in Kelsey Fisher, Elizabeth Johnston and Kristen Orrett. Fisher appeared in 19 games with 16 starts, while Johnston started all 26 games in 2009. Orrett appeared in 21 games making 20 starts and was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Third-Team. Returning in goal is junior keeper Paula Jackson. Jackson started 25 games in goal in 2009 while setting school records with 18 wins, 12 shutouts and 0.72 goals-against average (GAA) to garner her All-PSAC West Second-Team honors. Joining the program as a keeper will be Ashley Magruda who transfers after redshirting last season at West Virginia. Alvine expects Magruda to come in and immediately challenge Jackson for time in goal. “Their strengths and weaknesses complement each other. She [Magruda] will come in and push Paula.” Other key newcomers to the program include Jordan Egge, a Parade All-American Honorable Mention; Kamilla Lillefjaere, who has played in Norway’s First Division; Stephanie Thompson, a left-footer who can provide a different look on penalty and corner kicks. Also joining them will be Bethany Smyda, that Alvine says, “is fast and is an explosive scorer that has the ability to contribute right away.” The 2010 Vulcans hope to build upon the success of the last season and qualify for both the PSAC

Fresh off the best season in school history where California University of Pennsylvania finished 19-6-1 overall, captured its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title and appeared in both the PSAC and NCAA Tournaments, expectations have never been higher for the program. Gone is Amanda Heister who was selected the 2009 PSAC West Athlete of the Year in her senior campaign. “It’s a big loss, not just the goals, but the pressure she brought; she drew a lot of attention,” said fourth-year Cal U head coach Al Alvine. Heister finished her career as the program’s record-holder for career goals and points. “But she is one player and our team’s success last year was very much an effort by the whole roster. We have some players returning who can pick up that slack and we have some players coming in who we hope will be able to, too.” Those returning players include senior forward Sam Regney, who was voted All-PSAC West First-Team and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Atlantic Region after scoring nine goals and tallying eight assists for 26 points. “Sam has the ability to be an All-American caliber player,” said Alvine. “She’s one of our captains and leads by example. We’re counting on her to get us back to where we were last year.” The only other returning senior is Carina Honeygosky, who finished tied for second in the conference with nine assists. “Carina is an attacking midfielder, good playmaker and an excellent technical player,” said Alvine. “We lost her to injury in our first conference playoff game and definitely missed her.” Two returning sophomores who contributed a combined eight goals, 14 assists and 30 points as freshmen last season are Carley Work and Kayla Fransko Both were expected to come in and contribute, but how much was unknown. “They came in and hit the ground running,” remarked Alvine. On the season, Work contributed six goals (two game-winners) and five assists. Frankso finished tied with Honeygosky for second in the conference with nine assists while scoring two goals and tallying one gamewinner. The defense maintains its core as all four

AL ALVINE

Fourth Year at Cal U alvine@calu.edu Al Alvine enters his fourth season as head coach of the California University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer program in 2010. He has continued his track record of turning programs into winners as the Vulcans set the school record for wins and made their first appearance in the PSAC and NCAA Tournaments. Overall, Cal U finished with a 19-6-1 record and placed first in the PSAC West standings with a 10-3-1 divisional mark. The Vulcans then earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinal round after allowing only two goals in four games. Following the season, Alvine was selected the PSAC West and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year and Cal U was ranked No. 9 in the final NSCAA Top 25 poll. After a tough four-win season in his first year with the Vulcans, he directed the program to an eight-win improvement in 2008. With a 12-5-3 overall record, Cal U was the most improved team in NCAA Division II that season posted the seventh-biggest turnarounds in NCAA history. Prior to his arrival at Cal U, Alvine served as head coach for two years at Saint Anselm (N.H.). In each of his two seasons with the program, he led the Hawks to 10-win campaigns after the program failed to post a winning season in six years prior to his arrival.

In 2006, Alvine guided the Hawks to a 10-7-3 record and their first post-season win in more than a decade with an upset victory against Massachusetts-Lowell. Alvine, a native of Wayne, N.J., started his head coaching career at Castleton State (Vt.) in 2002. The Spartans, who had suffered nine-straight losing seasons prior to his arrival, posted a 15-5-1 mark in 2003. The following year, Alvine guided Castleton State to its best record in program history at 16-4-1. In addition to his positions within the college ranks, he has coached numerous other teams at various levels. Alvine served as head coach of the New Hampshire Lady Phantoms of the W-League, rated as the top women’s soccer league in the country and the second-ranked league in the world. At the youth level, he has served as head coach of the under-17 girls Olympic Development Program (ODP) girl’s program in Vermont and New Hampshire, Director of Coaching for the Rutland County Soccer Club in Vermont and as a staff coach for the NH Classics, a premier soccer organization in New Hampshire. In 2006, Alvine’s U-16 NH Classics team captured the New Hampshire state championship. A 1992 graduate from Robert Morris, Alvine was a four-year starter and senior captain on the varsity soccer team. During his scholastic career at DePaul High School in Wayne, N.J., he was a four-year starter, three-year all-state selection and two-year captain. He was also a three-year member of the New Jersey ODP program and a player within the Sportfriends S.C. and Union Lancers youth organizations. Other playing experience include stints with the Staten Island Vipers of the USISL and the Brooklyn Italians of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. Alvine holds an “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation.

mid-season injury. In her first year with the program, sophomore Paula Jackson established single-season school records for goals-against average, victories, shutouts and minutes. Third-year head coach Al Alvine was named the PSAC West and NSCAA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year after the Vulcans were ranked No. 9 in the final NSCAA Top 25 poll.

Only two years removed from a four-win season, Cal U finished with the most successful campaign in school history during 2009. The Vulcans posted a 19-6-1 overall record, captured first place in the PSAC West standings, appeared in both the PSAC and NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. Cal U featured the highest scoring offense in the PSAC behind the record-setting play of forward Amanda Heister. The senior led the league and tied the single-season school record with 19 goals en route to being named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. Heister finished her career with 107 points on 44 goals and 19 assists, breaking the previous record of 103 points set by Sherry Valera. Junior Sam Regney earned NSCAA and All-PSAC West First-Team honors after finishing second on the team with 26 points behind nine goals and eight assists. Newcomer Carley Work was one of only two freshmen on the All-PSAC West Teams after collecting 17 points on six goals and five assists. The midfield was directed by redshirt junior Carina Honeygosky and freshman Kayla Fransko. Both players led the team and tied for second in the PSAC with nine assists. Honeygosky received second-team all-region honors despite missing most of the post-season due to injury. The defense was anchored by the play of sophomores Kayla Klimasko and Elizabeth Johnston, who both started all 26 games in 2009. Klimasko continued to develop into one of the top defensive players in the region, as she received NSCAA all-region laurels for a consecutive season. with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “ScholarAthletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

riginating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and,

elcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan soccer. I am confident that Coach Al Alvine, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the women’s soccer tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final

standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 studentathletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.

On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirtytwo individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and fouryear graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media President & Mrs. Armenti Technology; Physical

The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Women’s Soccer and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

Angelo Armenti, Jr. President

Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.
