Introduction If there is one sector of the Argentinean publishing industry that has been bustling with energy and renewal during the last years, it is that of books for children and young adults. Several new publishing houses have joined those with a longer, more settled tradition, and a new generation of brilliant illustrators has introduced sweeping changes in the visual aspect of the books. This catalogue, like the others prepared especially for this year’s Frankfurt Bookfair, only shows a small selection of a huge publication-panorama. But, again, it offers a good summary: there are adapted versions of world-classics like Don Quijote and indisputable local names like Horacio Quiroga and Javier Villafañe. But there are, above all, the many outstanding contemporary authors children have learned to love and expect anxiously: Canela, Pablo De Santis, Ricardo Mariño, Ana María Shua, Ema Wolf, to name but a few. Some of the books are small objects of art, like the tiny El hilito or the very unusual Un libro de tamaño real. Of course, the children will also find stimulating introductions to the world of local and international artists, of natural sciences and physics. And a wide array of ‘how-to’ books aimed at the very special needs of young adults, whether girls or boys. Books to dream and to have fun, to think and to learn: a whole world to be discovered!

Captain Arsenio’s diary was found by chance. Dating back to 1780, it is actually the most valuable and ancient manuscript on aeronautics besides Leonardo da Vinci’s. Its pages are filled with sketches, outlines and technical notes about various flying machines. The projects are naïve, precise, foolish and striking. It is for readers, who keep their feet firmly on the ground and their heads on the clouds, to decide whether each of these attempts was a success or a failure. Pablo Bernasconi´s works have been published in newspapers and magazines such as Clarín, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Times, Rolling Stone and Fortune. His illustrations were included in Luerzer’s Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 2005 and 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 2008. 23

Anyone can have a cat, a dog, a hamster or a canary at home, but very few people are courageous enough to take care of a polter, a marmolia, a rebudillo or a bunch of minimones. If you want to learn about them, open the book carefully lest any of them runs away. Ana María Shua has earned a prominent place in contemporary Argentine fiction with the publication of over forty books in nearly every genre: novels, short stories, poetry, children’s fiction, film scripts, journalistic articles and essays. Her award-winning works have been translated into many languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Korean, Japanese, Islandic, Bulgarian, and Serbian, and her stories appear in anthologies throughout the world.
LA GALLETA MARINERA / THE HARDTACK Wolf, Ema
ISBN 978-950-07-2927-7 Year of publication: 2008 RHM - Sudamericana Illustrator: Tabaré Pages: 64 Format: 12,5 cm x 19,5 cm CDD: A863.928 2 Juvenile Fiction (Age 8-12) - 40 24
In the eight stories contained in this book, Ema Wolf yet again demonstrates her special talent for absurd ideas, crooked characters and imaginative nonsense. On a few pages each, she spins literary miniatures that delight both young and old readers. She confidently helps herself to the most various of elements: history, the Bible, and ancient folklore. Thus we read in a passage from Noah´s diary that he feels slightly overwhelmed by the capricious animal passengers on the ark and is plagued by the incompetent veterinarian Dr. Münzenmayer. Or we witness how a shrewd trade representative gets on board Columbus´s ship –shortly before landing in America! A book that is great fun to read! This book has been included in The White Ravens Catalogue 2009 (Internationale Jugendbibliothek).

EL FABULOSO MUNDO DEL ROCK / THE FABULOUS WORLD OF ROCK Cascioli, Andrés
ISBN 978-987-612-277-1 Year of publication: 2010 V&R Editoras Illustrations: Colour Andrés Cascioli Pages: 152, Format: 29 cm x 21 cm Spanish (Latin America) CDD: 780.9 Music, Young Adult / Teenager Non-fiction
Rock has become a resounding musical phenomenon and a complete aesthetic manifestation. Despite its Anglo-Saxon origins, it has become “naturalized” in many countries and, during its intense 50 years of life, rock culture has become a reference of its time. Many visual artists have been seduced by the expressive power of rock and have dedicated relevant works to it. Andrés Cascioli was one of them. The remarkable Argentine cartoonist conceived this book as a collection of biographies and curious, essential, amazing facts and records. A work full of extraordinary illustrations and portraits which, just like rock, are associated with surprise, innovation, excess and extravagance.
