SOCIO EXITOSO: JEFFERSON

La Unidad Educativa Bilingüe Jefferson se fundó el 27 de abril de 1977, ¿cómo fueron sus inicios?

Jefferson empieza como un proyecto en el año 1976, se funda el 27 de abril del 77 y abre por primera vez sus puertas en mayo de 1978 en una pequeña villa ubicada en Urdesa. La primera casa de Jefferson quedaba cerca de un parque, y es allí donde nuestros alumnos tenían su recreo porque no teníamos espacio en la villa. Así empezó todo, gracias al sueño de mi padre, Norberto Nurnberg, y su socio, Basil Haylock.

Nuestra propuesta educativa se asentó en dos pilares que marcaron una gran diferencia: excelencia en Inglés y educación personalizada. Desde el inicio, tuvimos una inmensa acogida, y es así como al poco tiempo nos cambiamos a las instalaciones de Santa Cecilia, en donde actualmente funcionan las secciones de Educación Inicial, Básica Elemental y Básica Media. Diez años después, construimos una sede solo para los estudiantes de Secundaria, ubicada en la Av. Del Bombero.

En el transcurso de los años, la familia Jefferson se ha extendido a otras ciudades,¿cuántas sedes tiene y en dónde están ubicadas?

La sede en Salinas nace por la insistencia de muchas personas que vivían allí y que buscaban tener una alternativa bilingüe para sus hijos. En el transcurso de 7 semanas Norberto y Basil tomaron la decisión de construir un Jefferson en Salinas. Después de 5 años se fundó la última sede de Jefferson en la ciudad de Manta, en un terreno frente a lo que antes era la base militar americana.

¿Bajo qué metodologías forman a sus estudiantes?

Las metodologías varían dependiendo el nivel de los chicos. Sin embargo, todos los métodos pedagógicos que utilizamos como Institución ponen al estudiante en el centro de su educación, desarrollan interdisciplinariedad, promueven la reflexión, cuestionamiento continuo y, sobre todo, generan amor por el aprendizaje.

Vivimos en un mundo globalizado y las instituciones educativas no son ajenas a ello, ¿pueden sus estudiantes acceder a intercambios estudiantiles?

Jefferson cuenta con un programa de internacionalización que incluye algunos ejes de acción: programas de intercambio, certificaciones internacionales, bachillerato con doble titulación, eventos estudiantiles internacionales y convenios con universidades extranjeras.

Con la llegada de la COVID-19, ¿qué cambios se generaron en los programas de estudios?, ¿cómo se han desarrollado las actividades?

Desde el inicio sabíamos que la modalidad virtual no se trataba únicamente de un cambio de escenario, debíamos atender necesidades específicas de cada grupo de estudiantes según su edad, rediseñar programas de estudio, definir nuevos procesos de aprendizaje, restructurar la jornada escolar, entre otras cosas.

El reto no ha sido fácil, pero el esfuerzo ha valido la pena. No puedo dejar de mencionar el gran apoyo que han recibido nuestros estudiantes desde casa, los padres han sido parte fundamental del éxito de esta modalidad de estudio.

Bajo el eslogan “Un mejor mañana, empieza hoy”, ¿cuál es el mensaje para la comunidad en general?

El futuro se lo trabaja todos los días, y el presente siempre es el punto de partida. Nos referimos a un mejor futuro en la educación, en nuestras comunidades, en la institución y sobre todo un mejor futuro para nuestros estudiantes. Independientemente de lo que “mejor” signifique para cada uno de ellos.

Para concluir, ¿cuál es su visión para los próximos años? No podemos negar que este último año la educación ha dado un salto muy grande, y ha sido el escenario perfecto para romper paradigmas. Me gusta pensar en la educación como un concepto vivo y dinámico, como un fenómeno progresivo que cambia y se adapta por el bien y el desarrollo de los estudiantes.

Jefferson Bilingual Educational Unit was founded on April 27, 1977, how did it start?

Jefferson began as a project in 1976, was founded the following year on April 27, and opened its doors for the first time in May 1978 at a small house located in Urdesa. Jefferson’s first home was near a park, and it was there where our students had their lunch breaks because we didn’t have an outdoor space. That’s how it all began, thanks to my father’s dream, Norberto Nurnberg, and his partner, Basil Haylock.

We based our educational proposal on two pillars that made a significant difference: excellence in English and personalized education. From the beginning, we had a huge acceptance, and that is how we soon moved to the Santa Cecilia facilities, where Preschool and Elementary School currently operate. Ten years later, we built another campus for just High School students, located on Av. Del Bombero.

Over the years, Jefferson’s family has spread to other cities, how many branches does it have and where are they located?

We thought about building a Jefferson campus in Salinas because many people who lived there insisted they needed a quality bilingual alternative for their children. In just seven weeks, Norberto and Basil decided to build a Jefferson in Salinas. Five years later, Jefferson’s last campus was founded in Manta, across from what was once the American military base.

Under what methodologies do you train your students?

The methodologies vary depending on the level of the kids. However, all methods we use at Jefferson states our student as the center of the process. The learning is focused on developing an interdisciplinary curriculum, promoting reflection, reinforcing continuous inquiring but mainly, generating love for learning.

We live in a globalized world and educational institutions are no strangers to it., can your students access student exchanges?

Jefferson has an international program that includes some lines of action: exchange programs, international certifications, double degree Diploma, international student events, and agreements with foreign universities.

The U.E.B. Jefferson is recognized for its academic excellence, especially for teaching English, where does her success lie?

English is and has been one of our four main pillars. For Jefferson’s students and teachers, this language is not just another subject; it is part of their life. English is not only found in books, notebooks, or classrooms; at Jefferson, you can find it in the corridors, breaks, lunch conversations, soccer games, even in the morning greeting. Our key to teaching English is in the methodology. The fundamental part of the process is that students develop oral and written communicational skills naturally.

With the arrival of COVID-19, what changes were generated in the study programs? , how have the activities been developed?

From the beginning, we knew that virtual school was not only a change of scenery. We had to adapt resources, redesign schedules and curriculum, and redefine the learning process for each group of students’ according to their age and needs.

The challenge has not been easy, but the effort has been worth it. I cannot fail to mention the outstanding support our students have received from home; parents have been a fundamental part of the whole virtual-year experience success.

Under the slogan “A better tomorrow starts today”, what is the message for the community?

The future is built in every day, and the present is always the starting point. We refer to a better future in education, in our communities, in the institution and above all a better future for our students. Regardless of what “best” means for each of them.

To conclude, what is your vision for the next few years?

We cannot deny that education has moved forward this year, and it has been the perfect setting to break up paradigms. I like to think of education as a living and dynamic concept. It is a progressive phenomenon that changes and adapts for students’ benefit and development.
