welcome Welcome to our summer 2014 season. Once again, I am delighted that we can continue to bring you the very best of British and international theatre. Alison Steadman will be visiting us as part of a short preWest End run of Emile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin; fresh from its West End triumph, Jeeves and Wooster will be gracing our stage in the hilarious Perfect Nonsense, adapted from my favourite P.G. Wodehouse book, The Code of the Woosters; the critically-lauded Chichester Festival Theatre production of the haunting tale of English public school life, Another Country, will be joining us following its London run; Dreamboats and Miniskirts will carry the Dreamboats and Petticoats nostalgia-fest into the swinging sixties; once again we will be presenting the Globe Theatre with Much Ado About Nothing in the classic Cambridge setting of the Master’s Garden at Corpus Christi College; and those brave Sheffield boys will be doing The Full Monty here in Cambridge!

ensemble that brought us the unforgettable Andromaque. If you can only take one risk this season it should be on Cheek by Jowl.

Don’t miss the brilliant Cheek by Jowl, who will be visiting us twice this season. Their thrilling production of ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore vividly depicts a brother and sister’s incestuous relationship and their violent descent into hell. It is one of my favourite productions of recent years and I am thrilled we are able to bring it back to Cambridge. Ubu Roi, charting the exploits of the despotic King Ubu, profoundly challenges our ideas about convention and will be performed by the same world-class French acting

This thrilling production from the Royal Shakespeare Company received tremendous acclaim when it opened in Stratford-upon-Avon in Spring 2013. Now, one of the UK’s finest actors, Ian McDiarmid reprises his astonishing performance as Galileo, leading a huge ensemble cast in this theatrical tourde-force. The year is 1609 and a brilliant Italian scientist is about to make a discovery that will change the world. Observing the night sky using the recentlyinvented telescope, he sees the solar system with a clarity never before experienced by astronomers and realises that the earth orbits the sun. When Galileo’s opponents convince the Pope that these new findings pose a threat to religious dogma and may spark unrest and civil disobedience, he is denounced by the Inquisition as a heretic and forced to publicly denounce his theories… This much-acclaimed translation of Brecht’s masterpiece by RSC Writer in Residence Mark Ravenhill is directed by Roxana Silbert, Artistic Director of Brimingham Rep, who recently directed Dunsinane, Measure For Measure and Richard III for the RSC.

Ian McDiarmid is perhaps best known for his iconic role as Emperor Palpatine in George Lucas’s epic Star Wars films. Other films include Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Gorky Park and Dragonslayer. Recent leading theatre roles include Timon of Athens for Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Emperor and Galilean for the National Theatre, John Gabriel Borkman for The Donmar Warehouse and Six Characters in Seach of an Author for the Chichester Festival Theatre.

When young Emmett was a high flyer in the City he was a regular customer in an upmarket restaurant but now, thanks to a recent reversal in his fortunes, he’s starting a new career there – as a dishwasher! His new colleagues are Dressler, who’s happily been scraping and scrubbing for over 30 years and is a bit of a philosopher, and Moss, who’s sadly well past his sell by date and heading for the dustbin. Together they attack the endless supply of crockery that descends from above. In this world of dirty dishes, soapsuds and despair, playwright Morris Panych brings wit and humour to their quest for existential meaning. David Essex returns to the stage in The Dishwashers following his hugely successful portrayal of Eddie Moon in BBC TV’s EastEnders. He enjoys a remarkable career that has combined theatre, films, television and music. David’s stage work includes Peter Hall’s production of She Stoops to Conquer in the West End and his numerous musicals include Evita, Godspell, All The Fun of The Fair, Mutiny! and Aspects of Love.

Last of the Duty Free reunites Keith Barron, Gwen Taylor and Neil Stacy to play-out the next hilarious instalment in a series which regularly pulled in TV audiences of over twelve million. When working class David and Amy met upper-middle class Robert and Linda whilst holidaying at the San Remo in Spain, their differences were immediately apparent. But, opposites were proven to attract, and a most unlikely romance developed, with hilarious consequences! Keith Barron also starred in BBC’s Lapland and All Night Long, was a regular on ITV’s Where the Heart Is and in 2007 joined ITV’s Coronation Street. Gwen Taylor played the title role in ITV sitcom Barbara, Ann Foster in Coronation Street, and has starred in Heartbeat and Midsomer Murders. Her theatre credits include Michael Morpurgo’s Butterfly Lion, Driving Miss Daisy, Calendar Girls, Prick Up Your Ears and Shirley Valentine. Neil Stacy has appeared in TV favourites including To Serve Them All My Days and Rumpole of the Bailey. Joining them is Carol Royle, known for her role as Jenny Russell in the BBC sitcom Life Without George, along with TV appearances in Heartbeat, The Professionals and Casualty.

Claudio loves Hero and Hero Claudio and nothing seems capable of keeping them apart. Claudio’s friend Benedick loves Beatrice and Beatrice Benedick, but (because neither will admit it) nothing seems capable of bringing them together. Only the intrigues of a resentful prince force Benedick to prove his love for Beatrice – by killing his best friend. Driven along by a romance all the more charming for being in denial, Much Ado About Nothing is a miracle of comic and dramatic suspense and gives us, in the bantering Beatrice and Benedick, two of Shakespeare’s wittiest, most endearing pair of lovers. There will be no seating for these performances, but there will be limited room for patrons to bring their own chairs. This will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and so cannot be guaranteed. There will be limited wheelchair spaces provided. ALISON STEADMAN Written in 1867, Zola’s Thérèse Raquin is a story of lust, madness and destruction set within the backstreets of Paris. The beautiful but doomed heroine is married off according to her aunt’s wishes, trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille. Every Thursday evening she watches her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin, play dominos... until one day her husband brings along an old friend – the alluring and athletic Laurent. As the two embark on an illicit affair, a turbulent passion is unleashed that drives them ultimately to violence and murder. Zola’s enduringly fascinating play did not receive its London première until 1891, due to the Lord Chamberlain’s censorship. Both the original novel and the play have been seen in many stage, screen, television and radio adaptations, including a 2013 Hollywood film. Alison Steadman who plays Madame Raquin, is one of the UK’s best-loved actresses, recently known for her role in Gavin & Stacey, she is soon to be seen in the new BBC sitcom Grey Mates. Her theatre credits include Beverly in Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, for which she won an Olivier Award. Director Jonathan Munby’s credits include: Wendy and Peter Pan (RSC) and Julius Caesar for Chicago Shakespeare’s Courtyard Theatre. The Arts Theatre aims to care for every customer as an individual, on a one to one basis. We continue to develop and expand our Access Programme through creating inclusive theatre events. TRAVEL AND PARKING There are parking spaces for customers with blue badges in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 in Wheeler Street; 7 on King’s Parade and 36 in The Grand Arcade car park. We are happy to book a taxi to take you home; please ask a member of our Front of House staff on your arrival. MOBILITY AROUND THE THEATRE We have eight spaces reserved for wheelchair users in the stalls. When booking tickets, the Box Office staff will ask if the wheelchair has a headrest, to ensure the correct space is allocated. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building and customers who are unable to access the Theatre by other means must inform the Box Office at the time of booking or upon arrival. We have four house wheelchairs which we can provide for all performances. DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CUSTOMERS Please note that we no longer have an induction loop fitted around our auditorium as we have invested in a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system. This is designed to help customers, without hearing aids, and those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are able to provide free of charge a limited number of Sennheiser headsets and Sennheiser personal induction loops, which are discreet and easy to use. If you have never used one before, we would strongly recommend coming to the Theatre, a few minutes early, to allow our Front of House staff adequate time to explain how they work. BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED CUSTOMERS We can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office, at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. BSL PERFORMANCES The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES Words will appear, as they are spoken, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES The describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance through the Sennheiser headsets. A pre-show touch tour is usually available (tickets are free but require booking). The tour may include set, costumes and props. Details of Access performance are highlighted on Page 2 and on the relevant show pages. We offer reduced priced tickets for customers with disabilities and one companion.
