welcome Welcome to our Spring/ Summer 2024 season brochure. As I write, our panto Mother Goose is still in full swing. I want to say a huge thank you, on behalf of everyone at the Arts Theatre, to all of you who have come along and joined in the fun. It has been brilliant to see so many panto-goers from across generations coming together to cheer on Gertie Goose! One of the joys of my job is that I get to see the show multiple times, from the auditorium and backstage. It is truly inspirational to see the commitment and craft that the company and crew of the panto put in for every performance, whether it is for a packed Christmas Eve show or an accessible Relaxed Performance. It’s also very special to watch audience reactions from the wings. To see a full house singing or laughing along, leaving the troubles of the world (and their mobile phones!) behind them for a few hours, and revelling in the unique British panto tradition makes all our work worthwhile. Thank you. Let the work on next year’s extravaganza begin! I’ve been running the Theatre for twenty years now and I’ve programmed over sixty seasons but it’s still nerve-racking when we finalise the season and send the brochure to the printers. Is there something for everyone, old and young? Is there a good blend of classic plays, musicals, murder mysteries, opera, jazz, new writing, modern plays, crowd pleasers and plays that will live on in the memory? Have we managed to find the best plays the UK touring market can offer? Have we successfully navigated the continuing postpandemic difficulties in our industry? Will all the productions sell as well as we hope and need them to? Given our desire to be affordable yet still balance our books, have we set the ticket prices appropriately?

BOX OFFICE: 01223 503333

It is often difficult to see the wood for the trees but I do hope you like what you find in these pages. However, the one thing we do feel certain about is the loyalty and discernment of you, our brilliant audience. Our overall ticket sales are now back at pre-pandemic levels and, thanks to your incredible support, we can attract the very best plays available to Cambridge. Thank you, please give us your feedback and rest assured we won’t be taking your support or the future of our Theatre for granted. Finally, I want to thank the individuals and companies who go the extra mile and give us additional financial support on a regular basis, over and above supporting us through buying tickets to our shows. As an independent theatrical charity we are critically reliant on this additional support to keep our Theatre open, keep ticket prices down, reach out to local children and schools and provide a full range of performances for those with additional needs. It need not be expensive for you, or your business, to get more involved with our Theatre in this way and it can be great fun to understand more about the workings of our charity. If you would like to talk to us about getting more involved please get in touch, either directly with me or with our Development team. Thank you, as ever, for your steadfast support and I look forward to seeing you again very soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre.

DOM JOLY: THE CONSPIRACY TOUR “Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean you’re not being followed!” Dom Joly has been off travelling the globe again. This time, he’s been looking into some of the strangest and weirdest conspiracy theories in existence. Now, he’s set to embark on a rather unique theatre tour, where Dom will be providing a hilarious, fascinating, and slightly anarchic guide to the wacky world of conspiracies. 1. Is the earth flat? 2. Does Finland exist? 3. Did JFK commit suicide? 4. Are Q Anon mentally ill? 5. Is Bill Gates using vaccines to take control of your mind? 6. Is Denver Airport a massive panic room for the Illuminati? 7. Are UFOs piloted by lizards? In the spirit of fairness, Dom will also be inviting a well-known and highly respected conspiracy theorist, Dr Julian Northcote, to take the stage and defend the alternate view. Due to the extremely controversial views aired in the show, security will be at an optimum and audiences are warned that angry demonstrations are very likely–or is that just another conspiracy?!

THE CIRCLE JANE ASHER, CLIVE FRANCIS & NICHOLAS LE PREVOST IN

BY

SOMERSET MAUGHAM

̒An exceptional cast. Thrilling to watch. A comic treat ̓ WhatsOnStage

Will history come full circle? Or can one generation learn from their parents’ mistakes? Jane Asher (Alfie, Deep End) plays Lady Kitty, a society beauty who notoriously abandoned her stuffy husband Clive (Clive Francis, The Crown), and eloped with the handsome Lord Porteous (Nicholas Le Prevost, Shakespeare in Love, Testament of Youth). Thirty years later, love’s young dream has descended into non-stop squabbling... Meanwhile Clive and Lady Kitty’s son Arnold faces the same marital fate, as his wife Elizabeth threatens to elope with the dashing Teddie Luton. Somerset Maugham’s sparky comedy of manners was first staged in 1921 and has remained a firm favourite with audiences ever since. Maugham was among the most successful novelists and playwrights of the inter-war years. Many of his novels, including The Painted Veil, Theatre, Up At The Villa and Of Human Bondage have been adapted for the screen.

DANNY ROBINS

A GHOST STORY

The stage phenomenon that has taken the West End by storm now comes to Cambridge. Winner of BEST NEW PLAY at the Whatsonstage Awards, this edge-ofyour-seat, supernatural thriller stars Vera Chok (Hollyoaks, Cobra), Jay McGuiness (The Wanted, BIG! The Musical, Rip It Up), George Rainsford (Call the Midwife, Casualty) and Fiona Wade (Emmerdale, Silent Witness). Written by Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcasts Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist, 2:22 A Ghost Story comes fresh from recordbreaking seasons at five West End theatres with a host of acclaimed star performances. It’s a brilliantly funny and adrenaline-filled night where secrets emerge and ghosts may or may not appear... What do you believe? And do you dare discover the truth? “There’s something in our house. I hear it every night, at the same time.” Jenny believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben. Can the dead really walk again? Belief and scepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening, and that something is getting closer, so they’re going to stay up… until 2:22... and then they’ll know. Age guidance 12+

“THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL, OPEN-HEARTED DEBUT THAT SHOULD HELP CHILDREN BE THE BEST THEY CAN BE AND REALISE THE POWER OF KINDNESS.” Book Trust

There used to be an empty chair at the back of the class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it. He’s nine years old (just like me), but he’s very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite! After learning that he has fled his own war-torn country, Ahmet’s classmates have ‘The Greatest Idea in the World’ – a magnificent plan to reunite Ahmet with his family. An unexpected and often hilarious adventure follows, all topped off with a terrific twist. Told from a child’s perspective, balancing heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class highlights the power of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn’t always make sense and reminds us that everyone needs a place to call home. ‘Shaffer’s sublime thriller is a masterpiece of plots... cracking entertainment that will appeal to everyone’ THE ADVERTISER Todd Boyce (Coronation Street’s notorious baddie, Stephen Reid) and Neil McDermott (EastEnders, The Royal) star in Anthony Shaffer’s masterpiece, directed by award winning Rachel Kavanaugh (The RSC/Chichester Festival Theatre). A young man (McDermott) arrives at the impressive home of a famous mystery writer (Boyce), only to be unwittingly drawn into a tangled web of intrigue and gamesmanship, where nothing is quite as it seems... This dark psychological ‘thriller about thrillers’ makes for an intriguing study of human conflict, jealousy, and manipulation. Proving to be far more than a ‘whodunnit’, it promises to baffle even the most proficient sleuth! Sleuth is one of the greatest ever stage thrillers and played for a total of 12 years in both London and New York. WEDNESDAY 4 – SATURDAY 7 MARCH

THE RECORD-BREAKING PRODUCTION RETURNS! A life in the balance. Twelve men. One verdict. Following a recording-breaking West End season, this powerful production of Twelve Angry Men is back in session! Reginald Rose’s gripping courtroom thriller stars Jason Merrells (Casualty, Emmerdale), Gray O’Brien (Coronation Street, Peak Practice), Tristan Gemmill (Coronation Street, Casualty), Michael Greco (EastEnders), Ben Nealon (Soldier Soldier) and Gary Webster (Minder, Family Affairs). Twelve Angry Men has been hailed ‘the classiest, most intelligent drama playing on the West End’. It brings the 1957 three-time Academy Award-nominated film, considered one of the great ‘mustsees’ of all time, to the stage. A jury has murder on their minds and a life in their hands as they decide the fate of a young delinquent accused of killing his father. But what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a huge dilemma, as prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial, and each other turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax… Now it’s your turn to witness a ‘brilliant’, ‘riveting’, ‘triumph’ of a show.

WEDNESDAY 1 & FRIDAY 3 MAY

BY PUCCINI Performed in English with English surtitles.

Manon Lescaut is a devastating depiction of a woman wrestling with her desire for love on her own terms, and the rigid double standards imposed on her by society. The opera was a breakthrough hit for its composer, Giacomo Puccini, packed with memorable music and heartbreaking drama. Jude Christian, fresh from a critically acclaimed Titus Andronicus at London’s Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, brings incisive direction and a sharp, poetic new translation to her radical new production, while ETO Music Director Gerry Cornelius conducts.

THURSDAY 2 & SATURDAY 4 MAY

BY STRAVINSKY Performed in English with English surtitles.

Igor Stravinsky’s brilliantly inventive The Rake’s Progress charts young Tom Rakewell’s journey from an unexpected riches to ruin at the hands of his own naivety and a devilish new friend. One of Stravinsky’s crowning achievements in his pioneering career, the opera is a cynical but humanistic depiction of loss, love and how the devil finds work for idle hands. The production is helmed by Polly Graham, Artistic Director of Longborough Festival Opera, and the up-and-coming conductor and composer Jack Sheen.
