welcome Welcome to our Summer/Autumn 2022 season. Dare I say it but things seem to be gradually getting back to normal. I need to start by saying thank you to all of you for coming to our Theatre in such numbers since Christmas. The main reason we continue to be able to attract such amazing productions is because of you, our ever loyal and discerning audience. Thank you. I know, from talking to so many of you, that what you value in a Theatre like ours is the sheer range and quality of productions. Everyone’s taste in theatre varies hugely and even our own tastes can change wildly depending on how we feel and the world around us. Our job is to put together a program that has something to tempt you, whatever your mood. Sometimes you might fancy some serious and enriching drama. Why don’t you try our co-production of a stunning modern adaptation of Strindberg’s The Dance of Death starring the stage legend Lindsay Duncan; August Wilson’s Jitney, the tale of a racially segregated America straight from the Old Vic; The Globe’s new production of Julius Caesar; the tale of The Two Popes exploring why the ultra-conservative Pope Benedict stood aside in favour of the populist football-loving Pope Francis or immerse yourself in the perennially popular double bill of Greek plays in Ancient Greek! If an evening of comedy and escapism is what the doctor ordered, how about our modern take on Oscar Wilde’s evergreen The Importance of Being Earnest; the Olivier Award winning Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of); the West End juggernaut The Play that Goes Wrong; that other timeless backstage comedy Michael Frayn’s Noises Off starring national treasure Felicity Kendal or the stage adaptation of the classic Ealing comedy The Lavender Hill Mob? The airborne comedy Boeing Boeing will have you laughing out loud and you can root for the gang of up and at it pensioners forging a new life for themselves in India in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Perhaps it’s time to introduce your children or grandchildren to the theatre. If it is, you will struggle to do better than the late Judith Kerr’s blissful The Tiger Who Came to Tea. It was one of the first shows that I took my boys to see and my wife still has their copy of the book all these years later! Or Julia Donaldson’s tale of Zog, the flying dragon ambulance, and his trusty crew of doctors is sure to delight the little ones. If your family like a good scare, how about Dinosaur World Live, where amazing lifelike puppets will transport you all straight back to Jurassic times. And of course, no theatrical year would be complete without a trip to our panto. This year’s homegrown spectacle will be Dick Whittington and his Cat. Our plucky hero, Dick, arrives in London seeking fame, fortune and adventure with his trusty companion Tommy the Cat. What could go wrong? Matt Crosby will reprise his role as Sarah the Cook and lead our brilliant cast in a show that will ensure your year ends on a high. Book early for the best seats! I hope we have succeeded in tickling your theatrical fancy with our program but if you need to know more, or would just like to chat through your choices, please ring our friendly and knowledgeable Box Office staff on 01223 503333. We would love to hear from you! Thank you as ever for your steadfast support and I look forward to seeing you again very soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre.

If you want some cheesy eighties rock anthems complete with big hair and over the top costumes then Rock of Ages is the show for you. Fancy doing the Time Warp again? It’s got to be Rocky Horror Show. Perhaps you fancy an alternative take on the stories of Henry VIII’s six wives? Then the global hit Six is the show for you. The gang from Showstoppers want you to tell them which musical numbers you want to hear and they will create a unique musical just for you!

As their 30th wedding anniversary approaches, Alice and Edgar are locked in a bitter struggle. They’ve driven away their children and their friends. Their relationship is sustained by taunts and recriminations. When a newcomer breaks into the midst of the fray, their insular lives threaten to spin out of control. Laced with biting humour, The Dance of Death is August Strindberg’s landmark drama about a marriage pushed to its limits.

Celebrating twenty years, Ballet Black are delighted to present two new works. Say It Loud is choreographed and directed by Ballet Black's Founder and Artistic Director, Cassa Pancho. It is a ballet created by Pancho and the BB Company artists charting the struggles and inspiration behind the formation of this exciting and pioneering company, from the uncomfortable reasons behind the Company’s existence to the frenetic, creative energy that has seen them create an enviable repertoire and build a reputation as a necessary part of the British ballet industry. The second ballet in this double bill, Black Sun by acclaimed South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma (Vuyani Dance Theatre) featuring an original score by Michael 'Mikey J' Asante (Boy Blue) is a work that draws energy from the sun and the moon giving rise to descendants of ancestors. These forces only meet to blacken, allowing us to draw from their powers as we prepare for life after life. Age guidance: 7+ (contains fleeting strong language and themes of racism)

MUSIC & LYRICS BY JOE STILGOE · ADAPTED & DIRECTED BY EMMA KILBEY Zog, super keen student turned air-ambulance, still lands with a crash-bang-thump. Together with his Flying Doctor crew, Princess Pearl and Sir Gadabout, they tend to a sunburnt mermaid, a unicorn with one too many horns and a lion with the flu. However, Pearl’s uncle, the King, has other ideas about whether princesses should be doctors, and she’s soon locked up in the castle back in a crown and a silly frilly dress! With a bit of help from some friends and half a pound of cheese, can Pearl make her uncle better and prove princesses can be doctors too? Age guidance: 3+ Running time: 1 hour (without an interval)

From the writer of the Academy Award-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, Darkest Hour and The Theory of Everything, comes the play that sparked a major motion picture. Nine years ago, Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world by resigning, the first Pope in 700 years to do so. What drove this archconservative to break with sacred tradition and make way for a one-time tango club bouncer, football-loving reformer with the common touch to become Pope Francis, one of most powerful men on earth? Starring Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones) and Nicholas Woodeson (Baptiste) this gripping and entertaining new play from Anthony McCarten premiered at Royal & Derngate, Northampton in 2019 and was adapted into the multi-award-winning film for which McCarten was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA Awards. The Two Popes is a fascinating and humorous story that shines a light into one of the world’s most secretive institutions. At its heart lies a timeless question: in moments of crisis, should we follow the rules or our conscience?

THE CAMBRIDGE GREEK PLAY PRESENTS A DOUBLE BILL OF
by Aeschylus
The triennial Cambridge Greek Play returns to the Arts Theatre. Following the success of 2019’s Oedipus at Colonus, the same creative team led by director Dan Goldman presents an exciting double bill: the earliest surviving Greek tragedy Persians by Aeschylus and the only remaining satyr play Cyclops by Euripides.
by Euripides
While Persians draws on recent Greek history and Cyclops is derived from the well-known episode in Homer’s Odyssey, both plays present an outsider as the central character. Can those we consider monsters become the object of our pity, if only we look at them closely enough? The tradition of performing a play in Greek every three years at Cambridge University extends back to 1882, with alumni including Rupert Brooke, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Tom Hiddleston. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see two rarely staged plays, highly relevant to our times, performed in the original Greek (with English surtitles).

The men who broke the bank and lost the cargo are back! The world premiere adaptation of The Lavender Hill Mob, the classic Ealing Comedy starring Alec Guinness, is heading to Cambridge! Come and see one of the ‘greatest British films of all time’ (BFI) brought to life on stage by Olivier-nominated playwright Phil Porter, directed by Tony and Olivier-nominated Jeremy Sams and starring acclaimed comic actors Miles Jupp (A Very British Scandal, Mock The Week, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans) and Justin Edwards (The Thick of It, 1917, The Ferryman). This side-splittingly funny, fast-paced comedy tells the story of Henry Holland, an unassuming bank clerk who dreams of stealing the van full of gold bullion he drives across London each day. When Henry learns that his new lodger makes Eiffel Tower paperweights out of lead, he devises a plan to make his dream a reality. It’s a golden opportunity to pull off the crime of the century, they’d have to be fools to mess it up…
