welcome Welcome to our summer 2014 season. Once again, I am delighted that we can continue to bring you the very best of British and international theatre. Alison Steadman will be visiting us as part of a short preWest End run of Emile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin; fresh from its West End triumph, Jeeves and Wooster will be gracing our stage in the hilarious Perfect Nonsense, adapted from my favourite P.G. Wodehouse book, The Code of the Woosters; the critically-lauded Chichester Festival Theatre production of the haunting tale of English public school life, Another Country, will be joining us following its London run; Dreamboats and Miniskirts will carry the Dreamboats and Petticoats nostalgia-fest into the swinging sixties; once again we will be presenting the Globe Theatre with Much Ado About Nothing in the classic Cambridge setting of the Master’s Garden at Corpus Christi College; and those brave Sheffield boys will be doing The Full Monty here in Cambridge!
ensemble that brought us the unforgettable Andromaque. If you can only take one risk this season it should be on Cheek by Jowl.
Don’t miss the brilliant Cheek by Jowl, who will be visiting us twice this season. Their thrilling production of ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore vividly depicts a brother and sister’s incestuous relationship and their violent descent into hell. It is one of my favourite productions of recent years and I am thrilled we are able to bring it back to Cambridge. Ubu Roi, charting the exploits of the despotic King Ubu, profoundly challenges our ideas about convention and will be performed by the same world-class French acting

Our new Foyer is working well and more and more of our customers are discovering the wonderful new spaces around the building. Thank you for all the positive feedback on the new areas. Over the coming months we will be doing our best to tempt those of you who arrive just before the performance, or who stay in the auditorium in the interval, to try out our new bars all around the building. As a charity, we really rely on the money we can generate from our bars so please support us. I don’t regard a visit to the theatre as a success unless I can get a decent ice cream and a G&T at the interval. I do hope we can encourage you to indulge! Thank you, as ever, for your loyal support and I look forward to seeing you all soon at the Cambridge Arts Theatre. With kindest regards,

A LIFE OF GALILEO
by Bertolt Brecht
Translated by Mark Ravenhill In association with the Royal Shakespeare Company Directed by Roxana Silbert
STARRING
IAN MCDIARMID ‘Brilliantly presented in McDiarmid’s masterful rendering’ OBSERVER
This thrilling production from the Royal Shakespeare Company received tremendous acclaim when it opened in Stratford-upon-Avon in Spring 2013. Now, one of the UK’s finest actors, Ian McDiarmid reprises his astonishing performance as Galileo, leading a huge ensemble cast in this theatrical tourde-force. The year is 1609 and a brilliant Italian scientist is about to make a discovery that will change the world. Observing the night sky using the recentlyinvented telescope, he sees the solar system with a clarity never before experienced by astronomers and realises that the earth orbits the sun. When Galileo’s opponents convince the Pope that these new findings pose a threat to religious dogma and may spark unrest and civil disobedience, he is denounced by the Inquisition as a heretic and forced to publicly denounce his theories… This much-acclaimed translation of Brecht’s masterpiece by RSC Writer in Residence Mark Ravenhill is directed by Roxana Silbert, Artistic Director of Brimingham Rep, who recently directed Dunsinane, Measure For Measure and Richard III for the RSC.
6
Ian McDiarmid is perhaps best known for his iconic role as Emperor Palpatine in George Lucas’s epic Star Wars films. Other films include Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Gorky Park and Dragonslayer. Recent leading theatre roles include Timon of Athens for Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Emperor and Galilean for the National Theatre, John Gabriel Borkman for The Donmar Warehouse and Six Characters in Seach of an Author for the Chichester Festival Theatre.

HHHH ‘Endlessly entertaining and intriguingly inspiring’ WHAT’S ON STAGE
When young Emmett was a high flyer in the City he was a regular customer in an upmarket restaurant but now, thanks to a recent reversal in his fortunes, he’s starting a new career there – as a dishwasher! His new colleagues are Dressler, who’s happily been scraping and scrubbing for over 30 years and is a bit of a philosopher, and Moss, who’s sadly well past his sell by date and heading for the dustbin. Together they attack the endless supply of crockery that descends from above. In this world of dirty dishes, soapsuds and despair, playwright Morris Panych brings wit and humour to their quest for existential meaning. David Essex returns to the stage in The Dishwashers following his hugely successful portrayal of Eddie Moon in BBC TV’s EastEnders. He enjoys a remarkable career that has combined theatre, films, television and music. David’s stage work includes Peter Hall’s production of She Stoops to Conquer in the West End and his numerous musicals include Evita, Godspell, All The Fun of The Fair, Mutiny! and Aspects of Love.

CLAIRE PRICE, NATALIE IMBRUGLIA, EDWARD BENNETT, SIMON GREGOR One of the world’s greatest stars; one of the world’s greatest playwrights and one of the greatest plays of the nineties - Things We Do For Love promises to be one of the theatrical highlights of the year. In South West London Barbara, elegant and glacial, lives in immaculate order on the middle floor of her converted house. Downstairs, lovelorn postman and part-time plumber Gilbert has created a shrine to his landlady. Upstairs, the flat is empty, a perfect bolthole for Nikki, Barbara’s old school-friend, and her fiancé Hamish. Unfortunately Hamish is everything that Barbara despises (bearded, Scottish and vegetarian) and Hamish takes an instant dislike to the ever-intolerant Barbara - a hostility which hides deeper feelings. This bedroom farce soon develops into something more complex as the two adversaries fall head over heels in lust. This is the UK’s greatest living playwright at the peak of his art, making hilarity and ingenuity from the things we do for love.

Natalie Imbruglia has enjoyed success both as an actress and singer, receiving three Grammy nominations and two Brit Awards for her musical achievements. Acting credits include Johnny English with Rowan Atkinson and the 2009 film Closed for Winter. TUESDAY 27 – SATURDAY 31 MAY
ENGLISH TOURING OPERA MOZART’S
THE MAGIC FLUTE THURSDAY 29, FRIDAY 30 AND SATURDAY 31 MAY
Probably the world’s favourite opera, The Magic Flute tells the enchanting story of a young prince and princess on a dreamlike journey in pursuit of love. Great comedy, spectacular costumes and memorable tunes mean this is the opera to charm children and captivate anyone going to the opera for the first time.
BRITTEN’S
PAUL BUNYAN WEDNESDAY 28 MAY
Musically charming and dreamlike, this cross between an opera and a musical re-creates the great myth of the American frontier – peopled by a giant, singing geese and cats, dancing Swedes, lumberjacks, and good and bad cooks. The score is brilliantly inventive, mixing elements of blues, folk songs and hymns in a witty and irreverent response to the American Dream. Featuring Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor, Damian Lewis (Homeland, Band of Brothers), as the voice of Paul Bunyan.
TIPPETT’S
KING PRIAM TUESDAY 27 MAY
Troy is under siege. In the city, the old King recounts the events leading up to the war, waiting for his own death. All the familiar characters and stories – Hector and Achilles, Paris, Helen and the gods – are brought to life in this memorable meditation on the futility of war. Brilliant, insightful and musically gripping, King Priam is a prime example of British opera at its best.

MONDAY 23 – SATURDAY 28 JUNE A CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE PRODUCTION
By Julian Mitchell DIRECTED BY JEREMY HERRIN
‘Setting and performances are immaculate... Jeremy Herrin handles the cast superbly. Rob Callender is a treat’ TIMES
DIRECT FROM THE WEST END What would lead a man to betray his country? What would lead a boy to betray his friends? In Julian Mitchell’s award-winning Another Country, which won an Olivier Award for Play of the Year and helped launch the careers of Kenneth Branagh, Daniel Day-Lewis, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth, these questions become fatally entwined. Another Country follows a company of public schoolboys through a summer term in the early 1930s where Bennett and Judd are both outsiders; one coming to terms with his sexuality, the other already a committed Marxist. But the Establishment has traditional ways of dealing with rebels and when a scandal rocks the school, the young men must confront their beliefs and make choices which will have a momentous impact on their lives and on the future of their country. Another Country balances subtle wit and thought-provoking drama in a fictionalised account of the youth of such people as the spy Guy Burgess and the Communist John Cornford, who died in the Spanish Civil War.
22
Another Country is directed by Jeremy Herrin, whose credits include Uncle Vanya and South Downs (Chichester Festival Theatre and the West End), That Face (Royal Court Theatre), This House (National Theatre), Much Ado About Nothing (The Globe) as well as Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies for the RSC.

The tender and heart-warming tales of country vet James Herriot, among the dales and moors, farmhouses and public houses, were expertly captured in a series of novels which have sold in their millions all over the world, and have been made into two films and a classic BBC TV series. Now these stories are being brought to the stage in a major new dramatisation. The adventures of James, Siegfried and his easy-going brother Tristan Farnon, are brought to life alongside the unique characters – and animals – that live and work on the Yorkshire moors. The play captures the laughter, joy and magic of the original novels which inspired the hit BBC TV series, and is a chance to escape into a much simpler time, when life moved at a slower pace, the health of your animals was your one concern and the only thing that tweeted was the birds!

Thérèse Raquin by Emile Zola
In a new version by Helen Edmundson DIRECTED BY JONATHAN MUNBY
STARRING
ALISON STEADMAN Written in 1867, Zola’s Thérèse Raquin is a story of lust, madness and destruction set within the backstreets of Paris. The beautiful but doomed heroine is married off according to her aunt’s wishes, trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille. Every Thursday evening she watches her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin, play dominos... until one day her husband brings along an old friend – the alluring and athletic Laurent. As the two embark on an illicit affair, a turbulent passion is unleashed that drives them ultimately to violence and murder. Zola’s enduringly fascinating play did not receive its London première until 1891, due to the Lord Chamberlain’s censorship. Both the original novel and the play have been seen in many stage, screen, television and radio adaptations, including a 2013 Hollywood film. Alison Steadman who plays Madame Raquin, is one of the UK’s best-loved actresses, recently known for her role in Gavin & Stacey, she is soon to be seen in the new BBC sitcom Grey Mates. Her theatre credits include Beverly in Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, for which she won an Olivier Award. Director Jonathan Munby’s credits include: Wendy and Peter Pan (RSC) and Julius Caesar for Chicago Shakespeare’s Courtyard Theatre. Helen Edmundson’s work includes the award-winning The Mill on the Floss with Shared Experience and Coram Boy for the National Theatre.

‘Unforgettable… an extraordinary experience.’ THE INDEPENDENT
Following critically acclaimed sold-out performances at the Royal Court Theatre and London’s West End, this trilogy of Beckett plays performed by Lisa Dwan arrives in Cambridge. Beckett’s Not I is an intense monologue, set in a pitch-black space lit by a single beam of light. A disembodied female mouth floats eight feet above the stage and delivers a stream of consciousness, spoken, as Beckett directed, at the speed of thought.

Footfalls is the moving story of May, a ghostly figure who paces back and forth like a metronome on a strip bare landing outside her dying mother’s room. Completing the trilogy is Rockaby. Probably the most famous of Beckett’s last works, Rockaby explores loneliness and loss as a woman sits on her rocking chair - that appears to rock of its own accord - recounting moments from her past. Lisa Dwan has worked extensively in theatre, film and television both internationally and in her native Ireland. Credits include : Beside the Sea at the South Bank Centre and Margot, Diary Of An Unhappy Queen at the Barbican. Director Walter Asmus was Beckett’s long-time friend and collaborator, assisting him on many of his productions at the Schiller Theatre in Berlin and for TV in Stuttgart.

access
The Arts Theatre aims to care for every customer as an individual, on a one to one basis. We continue to develop and expand our Access Programme through creating inclusive theatre events. TRAVEL AND PARKING There are parking spaces for customers with blue badges in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 in Wheeler Street; 7 on King’s Parade and 36 in The Grand Arcade car park. We are happy to book a taxi to take you home; please ask a member of our Front of House staff on your arrival. MOBILITY AROUND THE THEATRE We have eight spaces reserved for wheelchair users in the stalls. When booking tickets, the Box Office staff will ask if the wheelchair has a headrest, to ensure the correct space is allocated. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building and customers who are unable to access the Theatre by other means must inform the Box Office at the time of booking or upon arrival. We have four house wheelchairs which we can provide for all performances. DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CUSTOMERS Please note that we no longer have an induction loop fitted around our auditorium as we have invested in a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system. This is designed to help customers, without hearing aids, and those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are able to provide free of charge a limited number of Sennheiser headsets and Sennheiser personal induction loops, which are discreet and easy to use. If you have never used one before, we would strongly recommend coming to the Theatre, a few minutes early, to allow our Front of House staff adequate time to explain how they work. BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED CUSTOMERS We can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office, at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. BSL PERFORMANCES The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES Words will appear, as they are spoken, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES The describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance through the Sennheiser headsets. A pre-show touch tour is usually available (tickets are free but require booking). The tour may include set, costumes and props. Details of Access performance are highlighted on Page 2 and on the relevant show pages. We offer reduced priced tickets for customers with disabilities and one companion. Please enquire at Box Office when booking. If you would like any advice or have any questions about our Sennheiser equipment, seating arrangements or would like to discuss our access provision please contact the Box Office in person, call 01223 503333 or email access@cambridgeartstheatre.com.
