Carrie’s War is the unforgettable story of one ordinary girl and her brother who are evacuated to the Welsh mining valleys at the start of war. Sent to live with the reclusive Evans family they do their best to make friends in this new community. Soon, however, they become involved in a series of extraordinary events each more mysterious than the last. Nina Bawden’s award-winning book has been consistently voted one of the nation’s best-loved novels. Direct from the West End, this hugely successful stage adaptation brings to life Bawden’s heart-warming, funny and evocative tale in a beautifully staged production. Carrie’s War features a thirteen-strong cast starring Brigit Forsyth (Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, Calendar Girls) and Hannah Waterman (Eastenders, Calendar Girls and Strangers on a Train). www.carrieswar.com

welcome
Designed & Printed by David Grady at John Good Ltd, Coventry
Welcome to our autumn 2014 season. At the halfway point in the year I’m delighted that we can continue to bring the very highest quality British and international touring theatre to Cambridge audiences of all ages and theatrical tastes. Never before has there been such a diverse programme with such a strong connection to the West End as in our autumn season; the Royal Court Theatre are bringing their outstanding trilogy of Beckett plays direct from three sell-out London seasons; Alison Steadman, one of our most loved actresses, returns to Cambridge in Thérèse Raquin before a West End transfer as does Maureen Lipman, currently appearing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in Daytona before it visits us in September. Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, The Full Monty, Headlong’s vivid interpretation of 1984 and the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of To Kill A Mockingbird have all been delighting London audiences this year and I’m thrilled that they will all be gracing our stage, alongside Felicity Kendal in Hay Fever and Tony Robinson in The Hypochondriac. Looking further ahead, our family pantomime this year will be Aladdin and I’m delighted to announce that our director is David Grindley, whose incredible list of West End and touring credits include Pygmalion, Journey’s End and Abigail’s Party. David brings a wealth of theatrical
experience to what is the highlight of our year and I can’t wait to begin working on the production with him. After all, what better way to spend a summer’s day than thinking about what will make our family audiences howl with laughter on a cold winter’s night in December! Looking even further ahead to 2015 we have some stellar productions lined up including a visit from the Royal Shakespeare Company with A Mad World My Masters and the triumphant return of David Suchet in The Importance of Being Earnest. You will only be able to book for these productions if you are a Supporter of the Theatre until we open public booking later in the year, so please contact our Development team to discuss membership options to be in with a chance of securing the best seats in the house. Thank you as ever for your loyal support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With kindest regards,

Cambridge Arts Theatre presents this year’s traditional family pantomime
CAST TO BE ANNOUNCED! Join us on the adventure of a lifetime this Christmas with Cambridge Arts Theatre’s traditional family pantomime, Aladdin! The team that brought you last year’s sell-out ‘feel-good family show’ (Cambridge Edition) Robin Hood are reunited once again to take you on a thrilling magical carpet ride to far-off lands in an adventure for all the family to enjoy, whether you’re three… or ninety-three! The son of a humble washerwoman, Aladdin Twankey dreams of a better life filled with adventure. When an evil wizard Abanazer persuades Aladdin to help him on a dangerous quest to find a magic lamp, a few gold coins are all it takes for him to say yes! But Aladdin soon finds himself trapped in an enchanted cave, with only a battered, bent lamp for company. It’s only when he rubs the filthy lamp on his sleeve, however, that his adventures really start to begin!

JOHN CLEESE SO, ANYWAY John Cleese is a comedy legend and the most senile member of Monty Python; best known for his idiosyncratic turns in Monty Python and Fawlty Towers John will be bringing his unique comedic perspective to audiences across the UK this autumn with tales from his new book, So, Anyway. Cleese has achieved a lot in his career which started as a sketch writer for BBC Radio’s Dick Emery Show and then The Frost Report. After this, stardom beckoned, and Monty Python was created with Cleese co-writing and starring in four series and three films. He went on to achieve further success as the neurotic hotel manager Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, which he co-wrote with then wife Connie Booth.
8
After huge UK success John went on to crack the USA with A Fish Called Wanda (which he wrote and starred in with Jamie Lee Curtis). The late 1990s saw the unstoppable Mr Cleese appear in Bond movie The World is Not Enough and later Die Another Day. From writing and starring in plays, musicals, theatrical and comedy productions, to films and sitcoms, Cleese has done it all, and now it’s time for him to tell you about his jam-packed life, up until the age of thirty. What made him the star he is today?

The Tudors and Us
The UK’s leading constitutional historian, known for his forthright views, visits Cambridge Arts Theatre as part of our celebrated ‘For One Night Only’ series to talk about the period he describes as “the most glorious soap opera , with the whole future of countries turning on what these huge personalities felt like when they got out of bed in the morning” David Starkey is a Cambridge educated grammar school boy who became a respected LSE lecturer, a uniquely abrasive debater on Radio 4’s Moral Maze, a controversial contributor to Question Time, and the creator and presenter of many very popular historical TV series on such subjects as Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, The Monarchy, The Churchills, and recently Music and Monarchy. There are few more stimulating thinkers, and few who understand better the way the most powerful have thought throughout our history.

Clare Teal and her 16 piece Hollywood Band led by Grant Windsor are proud to present a very special celebration of the music of the iconic and much-loved Doris Day to mark the great lady’s 90th Birthday this year. The programme takes in aspects of Doris’ long and varied career, from her early days with Les Brown and his Band of Renown through her time in Hollywood to her later more pop influenced material. The show includes many of the songs that music lovers associate with Doris, ‘Secret Love’, ‘Move Over Darling’, ‘Perhaps Perhaps, Perhaps’, ‘Deadwood Stage’, ‘It’s Magic’, ‘Ready Willing & Able’, ‘Everybody Loves A Lover’, ‘I’ll Never Stop Loving You’ and ‘Que Sera Sera (What Will Be Will Be)’. A fitting tribute to a great star.

From the pen of the inimitable and ever popular Noël Coward comes this exquisite collection of nine one-act plays performed together, three plays per night, for the first time in the UK since Coward starred in them in 1936. From vaudeville to satire, from farce to intricate comedy of manners, from melodrama to romance, these plays span the full, glorious range of Coward’s writing. Peep through your fingers at the chaotic Red Peppers music-hall show, witness a bankrupt couple use all Ways and Means to scheme their way out of debt, and break your heart along with Laura in the famous Still Life, the original version of the film Brief Encounter. Performed in trios of three per evening, this is a unique opportunity to see a stellar ensemble cast perform all of these wonderful plays. Claudio loves Hero and Hero Claudio and nothing seems capable of keeping them apart. Claudio’s friend Benedick loves Beatrice and Beatrice Benedick, but (because neither will admit it) nothing seems capable of bringing them together. Only the intrigues of a resentful prince force Benedick to prove his love for Beatrice – by killing his best friend. Driven along by a romance all the more charming for being in denial, Much Ado About Nothing is a miracle of comic and dramatic suspense and gives us, in the bantering Beatrice and Benedick, two of Shakespeare’s wittiest, most endearing pair of lovers. There will be no seating for these performances, but there will be limited room for patrons to bring their own chairs. Written in 1867, Zola’s Thérèse Raquin is a story of lust, madness and destruction set within the backstreets of Paris. The beautiful but doomed heroine is married off according to her aunt’s wishes, trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille. Every Thursday evening she watches her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin, play dominos... until one day her husband brings along an old friend – the alluring and athletic Laurent. As the two embark on an illicit affair, a turbulent passion is unleashed that drives them ultimately to violence and murder. Zola’s enduringly fascinating play did not receive its London première until 1891, due to the Lord Chamberlain’s censorship. Both the original novel and the play have been seen in many stage, screen, television and radio adaptations, including a 2013 Hollywood film.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Following critically acclaimed sold-out performances at the Royal Court Theatre and London’s West End, these three short plays by Samuel Beckett performed by Lisa Dwan - arrive in Cambridge. Beckett’s Not I is an intense monologue, set in a pitch-black space lit by a single beam of light. A disembodied female mouth floats eight feet above the stage and delivers a stream of consciousness, spoken, as Beckett directed, at the speed of thought. Footfalls is the moving story of May, a ghostly figure who paces back and forth like a metronome on a strip bare landing outside her dying mother’s room. Completing the trilogy is Rockaby. Probably the most famous of Beckett’s last works, Rockaby explores loneliness and loss as a woman sits on her rocking chair - that appears to rock of its own accord - recounting moments from her past.
22
Lisa Dwan has worked extensively in theatre, film and television both internationally and in her native Ireland. Credits include : Beside the Sea at the Southbank Centre and Margot, Diary Of An Unhappy Queen at the Barbican. Director Walter Asmus was Beckett’s long-time friend and collaborator, assisting him on many of his productions at the Schiller Theatre in Berlin and for TV in Stuttgart.

The Bliss family – recently-retired Judith, the once glittering star of the London stage; David, an egocentric novelist; and Sorel and Simon, their two Bohemian adult children – are incapable of sharing the spotlight. Unconventional, risqué, and often downright rude, they are everything a respectable English family should not be. When each member of the family invites a guest to their rural retreat, the unassuming visitors are thrown into a living melodrama. Misjudged meetings, secret seductions and scandalous revelations proliferate during one outrageous weekend in Berkshire. Born into a theatrical family, Felicity Kendal is one of the UK’s most popular actresses. She shot to fame in The Good Life on television and has won numerous awards for her stage work.

PANTO WHEELS Panto Wheels is a scheme, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre, to help children from culturally and socially deprived areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel, which can prove prohibitive. For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts. Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. Many schools also use the pantomime story to inform teaching and learning across the curriculum, helping children encounter subjects, such as Science and Mathematics, in exciting contexts. In our 2013/14 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped 2400 children from 17 schools come and experience the magic of Robin Hood. To make a donation to help even more children attend the pantomime this year, please contact Victoria Willingale on 01223 578912.
