welcome Welcome to our Autumn/Winter 2021 Season brochure. I want to start with a huge thank you to all of you have come back to our Theatre since we reopened our doors with David Mamet’s Oleanna on 8 June. We were determined that we would be amongst the first theatres in the Country to reopen, we wanted to do so without fuss and with a firm emphasis on the quality of the productions on our stage rather than the difficulties of reopening. Together with you, we have all negotiated the changing and unclear landscape of COVID restrictions with absolute determination to get live theatre back to Cambridge as soon as possible. You have been so supportive and helpful throughout and on behalf of all of us at the Arts Theatre I cannot thank you enough. I now find myself introducing our second season which, COVID fortunes permitting, sees us programming wonderful shows right through until April 2022. As ever there will be famous faces gracing our stage including David Suchet, Nigel Havers, Patricia Hodge, Griff Rhys Jones, Julian Clary, Mathew Horne, Ian McDiarmid, Matthew Kelly and the wonderful Penelope Keith. We have a host of classic plays from Shakespeare’s masterpiece A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ronald Harwood’s bittersweet tale of the theatre The Dresser, Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming to Noël Coward’s sublime Private Lives. Musicals include Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tell Me on a Sunday and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. There will be stunning new writing and adaptations including the fabulous Robert Icke’s take on George Orwell’s Animal Farm, a new theatrical version of the evergreen TV classic The Good Life, a gloriously inventive twist on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles and the story of a real-life meeting between Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel in Charlie and Stan. Murder Mystery fans will be spoilt for choice with Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder, Peter James’ new thriller Looking Good Dead and a new stage version of Cluedo. Family audiences can choose between David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny, a magical new production of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful and the breathtaking puppetry of Dragons and Mythical Beasts. new comedy Groan Ups as they hilariously follow a class of six-year-olds on their journey to adulthood. One night events will include artist and activist Ai Weiwei, naturalist Chris Packham, the legend that is Brian Blessed and jazz from Claire Martin, Clare Teal and the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars. And finally, I am delighted to announce our new production of Aladdin featuring our very own pantomime legend Matt Crosby as Widow Twankey. Last year’s production Dame Trott’s Panto Palaver provided much needed cheer amidst the COVID gloom. This year’s Aladdin will be a return to a fullscale production with all the hilarity, glamour, ribaldry and happiness that you expect from a Cambridge Arts Theatre panto. Please join us for Aladdin, the most magical journey of them all. I couldn’t finish without thanking our staff and volunteers for all their efforts to get us up and running again and in keeping our Theatre open whatever COVID throws at us. Their commitment to a thriving and safe theatre here in the heart of our historic city is little short of astonishing. If you do have a brilliant night at the Theatre or a wonderful trip to the panto please go out of your way to let them know. For sixteen years Norman has been there to fix Sir’s wig, massage his ego, remind him of his opening lines and provide the sound effects in the storm scene. panto wheels Panto Wheels is a charitable project, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd, to help children from disadvantaged areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel and/or tickets. For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts. Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. In our 2019/2020 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped over 4,300 children from 21 schools and groups experience the magic of Cinderella. We are proud to reach out to the local community, helping children from a range of backgrounds and with diverse needs. This year, with your support we can increase our reach and make sure that even more children enjoy the special shared experience of live theatre at Christmas.

All tickets for the Arts Theatre include a £3 per-ticket booking fee. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre. Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By charging a booking fee we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity.

REFUNDS & EXCHANGES

Tickets are not refundable unless a performance is cancelled. Currently, if you are unable to attend due to COVID-related illness or self-isolation we can offer you a full refund, exchange or credit voucher for a future performance. Other exchanges may be made under certain conditions, with at least 48 hours prior notice; please contact the Box Office for details as policy is subject to change.

Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to most performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for students, groups and schools. Please note there are no discounts on the lowest price seats and only one discount applies and all discounts are subject to availability. BAG AND CLOAKROOM POLICY In the interest of customer safety the following items cannot be taken into the auditorium: Rucksacks or backpacks of any size, children’s rucksacks, handbags that can be worn as backpacks, handbags larger than 25cm x 35cm, shopping bags and large items such as holdalls and suitcases. We strongly urge you to leave all bags at home or in your car, where it is practical. If you bring them to the Theatre you will be asked to check them in to the cloakroom which is situated on the first floor past the Stalls Bar (Peas Hill entrance). Please allow sufficient time to travel to the Theatre and to allow for the additional delays this may cause. We recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

The Arts Theatre aims to care for every patron as an individual, on a one to one basis. There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 on Wheeler Street; 7 on King’s Parade and 36 in the Grand Arcade car park. If you have mobility requirements, please advise the Box Office when booking tickets so we are able to allocate you the correct space. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building. We have five house wheelchairs (including one electric) available for use during all performances, subject to availability. We have a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system, designed to help DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING patrons both without hearing aids, and for those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are also able to provide headsets and personal induction loops. If you have never used one before, we recommend arriving at the Theatre early so that our Front of House staff can explain how they work. Some of our performances are BSL INTERPRETED. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform the Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
