welcome Welcome to our Spring/Summer Season. I want to start by thanking all of you who have supported us through this latest Omicron wave. We were recovering nicely and looking forward to a brilliant panto season when Omicron hit. Our panto was already fully rehearsed and we had shows lined up well into the Spring when suddenly advance ticket sales stopped and our industry went into a blind panic again. As ever, the magnificent team of staff and volunteers here at the Arts Theatre rose to the challenge. New COVID protocols were put in place and we were able to welcome nearly 25,000 of you, including many schoolchildren and groups, to Aladdin. Things were a little less calm backstage. As COVID ravaged through the panto company we battled to keep the show on stage. At one point six of the fourteen actors were off, musicians had to be replaced mid-show and our depleted stage crew took on new levels of multitasking. You, our audiences, were all amazing, joining in with what felt like a wartime spirit and together we made it happen. It felt like one of our greatest achievements and we could not have done it without you. Thank you from everyone at the Arts Theatre and the Company of Aladdin.

Broadway and West End triumphs; it’s time to do the Time Warp again with the ever-popular Rocky Horror Show and embark an unforgettable journey with Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

As Omicron took hold, we sadly had to cancel or postpone a number of shows in our Spring season, but we have now managed to get things back on track and put together a fantastic and varied season. Opera is back with English Touring Opera bringing us a double bill of Puccini’s La bohème and Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel. The ever-popular BalletBoyz return with their thrilling take on modern dance. Younger audience members are well served from their first steps into our Theatre with The Smartest Giant in Town to the very best in drama with Robert Icke’s new version of Animal Farm, Michael Morpurgo’s tale of courage and devotion Private Peaceful and J B Priestley’s classic tale An Inspector Calls.

Thank you as ever for your steadfast support and I hope that I will see you again very soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre.

Those of you needing a pick-me-up after the COVID gloom will enjoy Cluedo, a spoof thriller from the director of The Play That Goes Wrong or the homage to Morecambe and Wise The Play What I Wrote, with the obligatory appearance of a famous guest star each evening. We are thrilled to present Beautiful – The Carole King Musical fresh from its

If you, like me, have missed first class theatre during the pandemic this is the season to re-establish your theatregoing habit. We are delighted to be co-producing a new adaptation of Strindberg’s The Dance of Death starring the fabulous Lindsay Duncan and Hilton McRae; Gryff Rhys Jones and Janie Dee star in An Hour and a Half Late, a tale of marital meltdown; Mathew Horne and Keith Allen bring to life Pinter’s masterpiece The Homecoming, exploring the brutal politics of a dysfunctional family and Patrick Duffy makes a welcome return to the stage in the classic Broadway thriller Catch Me if You Can. Film fans are in for a treat with stage adaptations of Fatal Attraction and the hugely popular The Da Vinci Code. The feel-good comedy drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, about a game group of retirees re-shaping their lives in a dilapidated Indian hotel, promises to be the big hit of the season. We will continue to do our best to look after you when you visit our Theatre, whatever current COVID regulations are in place, so please be sure to check our website for our latest advice before you visit us.

TUESDAY 31 MAY – WEDNESDAY 1 JUNE

BARRY HUMPHRIES: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK National treasure Barry Humphries will take you on a revelatory trip through his colourful life and theatrical career with his new show The Man Behind the Mask. An intimate, confessional evening seasoned with highly personal, sometimes startling, and occasionally outrageous stories. The UK welcomed Dame Edna with open arms, immediately becoming a household favourite and filling our living rooms with many years of laughter. Barry’s other alter egos included Sir Les Patterson and Sandy Stone. Barry peels off his mask to introduce the man behind the clown. “This is a show in which I am the principal character; it’s not Les, it’s not Edna, it’s not Sandy Stone. It is really about this character called ‘me’. I’m not in disguise,” Humphries says. Audiences can expect a virtuoso, comic, solo performance filled with laughter, drama and surprise. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and the magic of technology may even allow appearances – or interruptions – by unexpected guests.

When The Play What I Wrote opened in London’s West End, every single review was a rave, every show a sell-out and it won every major theatre award. The Sunday Times called it ‘a triumph’ and The Observer said ‘audiences weep with laughter’. Thom has written a play, an epic set in the French Revolution called ‘A Tight Squeeze for the Scarlet Pimple’. Dennis, on the other hand, wants to continue with their double act. He believes that if they perform a tribute to Morecambe and Wise, Thom’s confidence will be restored and the double act will go on. But first Dennis needs to persuade a guest star to appear in the play what Thom wrote... With a mystery guest star at every performance, this ‘recklessly, tear-inducingly funny show’ (The Guardian) is ‘a loving celebration of comic genius which is itself touched with comic genius’ (Daily Telegraph). Previous mystery guest stars have included Ralph Fiennes, Ewan McGregor, Joanna Lumley, Daniel Radcliffe, Kylie Minogue, Nigel Havers, Tom Hiddleston, Sue Holderness, Charles Dance, Dawn French and Sting. Who will you see when you see The Play What I Wrote?

‘Down in deepest W9, there is no more mozzarella al pesto. The baked cod is history. What was a fish, now – just a few pathetic bones. A stilton put out to breathe this afternoon, has probably started to evolve.’ Life seems good for Peter and Linda Travers. Home is a luxury riverside apartment. Their third child has finally moved out and they have more money than they know what to do with. They are just about to leave and meet friends to celebrate a lucrative business deal when Linda drops a bombshell – she’s not going… Olivier Award-winners Griff Rhys Jones (Oliver!, The Wind in the Willows) and Janie Dee (Carousel, Hello Dolly) star in this devastatingly funny portrait of a couple whose five minutes of candid conversation launches an outpouring of emotions, home truths, wine, nibbles and anarchy.

‘FIFTY YEARS AFTER ITS LONDON PREMIERE, HAROLD PINTER’S PLAY CONTINUES TO PUZZLE, ASTONISH AND DELIGHT’

THE GUARDIAN

DIRECTED BY JAMIE GLOVER “They’re very warm people, really. Very warm. They’re my family. They’re not ogres.” Harold Pinter’s 1960s masterpiece is widely regarded as his finest play. This bleakly funny exploration of family and relationships has become a modern classic and winner of the Tony Award for Best New Play. Teddy, a professor in an American university, returns to his childhood home accompanied by his wife, Ruth, to find his father, uncle and brothers still living there. In the subsequent series of encounters, life becomes a barely camouflaged battle for power and sexual supremacy fought out with taut verbal brutality. Who will emerge victorious – the poised and elegant Ruth or her husband’s dysfunctional family? Star of BBC’s Gavin & Stacey Mathew Horne (Death in Paradise, Bad Education) is perfectly cast as Lenny, Teddy’s enigmatic brother. Actor, comedian and musician Keith Allen (The Young Ones, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Pinter 3 in the West End) plays the brutal patriarch Max.

LA BOHÈME BY PUCCINI

SUNG IN ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SURTITLES WEDNESDAY 20, FRIDAY 22 & SATURDAY 23 APRIL

THE GOLDEN COCKEREL BY RIMSKY-KORSAKOV

SUNG IN ENGLISH WITH ENGLISH SURTITLES

THURSDAY 21 APRIL

English Touring Opera returns to Cambridge with a poetic production of the most popular of operas and a lively new production of a comic Russian fantasy. Puccini’s La bohème is a story of young love, starting on Christmas Eve in a Parisian garret. On this festive, snowy night the lovers draw close, but poverty forces them apart in a story told with the most memorable music, from 'Che gelida manina' to the shattering brass chords announcing Mimi’s death. ETO’s muchpraised production, in period dress and inventive designs, sung in Italian, promises to break every heart and breathe joy into the spirit of everyone who has ever wanted love. The Golden Cockerel was the final – and favourite – opera of Rimsky-Korsakov, the brilliant Russian whose exotic orchestration has made similar works such as Scheherazade so popular. A daring satire on the last days of the Romanov empire, and in particular the debacle of the Russo-Japanese War, it is as explosive as it is charming. Led by new ETO Music Director Gerry Cornelius and ETO Director James Conway, with Grant Doyle (ETO's Macbeth) in the role of the sleepy Emporer Dodon, this should be an evening of fantasy, mischief and enough musical delight to ice a lemon cake!

Based on the classic motion picture, James Dearden’s intoxicating new stage play Fatal Attraction brings the definitive movie thriller to the UK stage. A brand new production of the award-winning West End and Broadway show Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, comes to Cambridge. Mehmet Ergen As their 40th wedding anniversary approaches, Alice and Edgar are locked in a bitter struggle. They’ve driven away their children and their friends. Their relationship is sustained by taunts and recriminations. When a newcomer breaks into the midst of the fray, their insular lives threaten to spin out of control. Laced with biting humour, The Dance of Death is August Strindberg’s landmark drama about a marriage pushed to its limits. Olivier and Tony Award winner Lindsay Duncan stars as Alice. One of our best-loved actresses, Lindsay is well-known for her BAFTA nominated performances on screen in Alan Bleasdale’s G.B.H and Stephen Poliakoff’s Shooting the Past. Hilton McRae’s numerous credits in his forty year stage and screen career include Mansfield Park, Monarch of the Glen, Far From The Madding Crowd and the multi award-winning HBO drama, Chernobyl. Oscar winning playwright Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Her Naked Skin, National Theatre) reunites with Arcola Theatre's co-founder and Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen for the world premiere of a thrilling new version.
