welcome Welcome to our 2021 Reopening season. I am delighted, thrilled and more than a little relieved to announce that we will be reopening our doors on Tuesday 8 June 2021. All of us at the Theatre feel very proud to be able to present a brilliant new season, after our longest closure period since World War II and what has been an unbelievably challenging year for us all. We will be welcoming you back into the Theatre from June to celebrate the return of live performance with an exciting and varied season of shows, from the original stage thriller The Woman in Black to the ever-popular musical Blood Brothers. Our season opens with Oleanna, David Mamet’s controversial masterpiece about political correctness and campus sexual harassment, eerily foreshadowing the #MeToo era. We will be welcoming Ralph Fiennes in the world premiere of his theatrical production of T.S. Eliot’s Four Ouartets. Looking ahead to Autumn, Julian Clary and Matthew Kelly will star in the classic play about theatre The Dresser, while Patricia Hodge and Nigel Havers star in Noël Coward’s evergreen comedy Private Lives. For those looking for a more riotous night out, Mischief are back with Magic Goes Wrong, direct from the West End. What could go wrong? Our younger audience members will be excited to go on a magical journey in The Snail and the Whale, while older kids discover our horrible history in Barmy Britain. Original Theatre’s A Splinter of Ice explores an unlikely friendship born during the Cold War, while Michael Frayn’s awardwinning Copenhagen speculates on the profound exchanges between two Nobel Prize winning physicists during the Second World War. We have thought long and hard about how to tackle the uncertainties of the coming months. Shows will initially be presented on a socially distanced basis until 20 June in accordance with the Government Roadmap.
Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. Registered in England No. 03536370 Registered Charity No. 1069912. Registered Office: 6 St Edward’s Passage, Cambridge CB2 3PJ. VAT Registration No. 229 1368 04
BOX OFFICE: 01223 503333
From 21 June, we will be selling tickets for each show on a full capacity basis. If this is not allowed due to Government regulations, and we have to reduce the number of customers in any given performance, we will refund tickets on the basis of the last booking being refunded first, so I would advise booking as soon as you can. We will continue to make sure your visit is COVID safe and enjoyable and we will implement the See it Safely code of practice throughout the Theatre. Finally, if you are one of our more frequent theatregoers, you will notice many of our start times have been changed from 7.45pm to 7.30pm, please check the performance when you book your tickets. In recent months, as we have dared to imagine the possibility of reopening, many of you have told me just how much you have missed the experience of live performance and what an incredible asset this Theatre is for our community. Well now we are back, full of hope and optimism and excited about bringing brilliant drama back to our Theatre once again. We could not have made it through the last year without your steadfast support. Thank you, as ever, and I hope that I will see you again very soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With my best wishes

A VERY BRITISH MURDER Renowned historian Lucy Worsley returns to Cambridge for one night only with an illustrated exploration of our fascination with murder. Already covering the history of this very British obsession in a BBC television series and book, Lucy Worsley shares its secrets and explores the history in forensic detail, examining not only the crimes themselves but also how murder became a form of middleclass entertainment through novels, plays, artefacts and the press. From a Regency serial killer to Agatha Christie… this is the story of how crime was turned into art. Lucy Worsley is Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces and a hugely popular writer, broadcaster and speaker. Set on an American campus, a seemingly innocuous conversation between a college professor and his female student warps into a nightmare which threatens to destroy them both, when she files a claim of sexual harassment against him. With its take on the corrosive excesses of political correctness and exploration of the use and abuse of language, this is the ultimate drama of pupil power and student revenge. Addressing issues which are strikingly current, this new production is a fascinating opportunity to see this landmark play from the perspective of the #MeToo era, following its success at the Theatre Royal Bath. STEPHEN MALLATRATT Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story, The Woman in Black, comes dramatically alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation. This gripping production, directed by Robin Herford, is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror. A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a woman in black, engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. The Woman in Black will reopen in London’s West End in September 2021 and now embarks on a major UK tour. Age guidance 12+

Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in a world premiere adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s Four Ouartets to welcome audiences back to live theatre. Compelling, moving and symphonic, Four Ouartets offers four interwoven meditations on the nature of time, faith, and the quest for spiritual enlightenment. Mostly written during WWII when the closure of playhouses during the Blitz interrupted Eliot’s work in theatre, the four parts (Burnt Norton, East Coker, The Dry Salvages and Little Gidding) were the culminating achievement of Eliot’s Nobel Prize winning literary career.

Michael Frayn’s multi award-winning masterwork is a dazzling exploration of two brilliant minds and their motives. In Nazi occupied Copenhagen in 1941, a clandestine encounter took place between two Nobel Prize winning physicists, Dane Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, a German. The men were old friends and long-term colleagues, but now found themselves on opposite sides of the divide. Under the watchful eye of Bohr’s wife, Margrethe, the two men debate and exchange their transformative ideas, which had huge implications for both the Nazis and the Allies, and for our world today. This totally absorbing historical detective story, conjured from a smattering of scientific facts, is a daring, fascinating and stimulating drama that enjoyed a hugely acclaimed run at the National Theatre before transferring to the West End and Broadway and winning the 2000 Tony Award for Best Play. It’s taken thirty years and the beginnings of a new world order. As Philby’s last wife, Russian memoirist Rufa, watches the two men raise their vodka glasses, Ben Brown’s compelling political drama asks whether Philby betrayed his friend as well as his country, and how much the writer of The Third Man knew about Philby’s secret life. From the award-winning producers of The Habit of Art and Birdsong, and the writer and director of the West End hit play Three Days in May, which inspired the Oscar-winning film Darkest Hour. Ben Brown’s coruscating new political drama explores an unlikely friendship, yet a friendship woven of deceit as well as loyalty. Starring Olivier Award-winning Oliver Ford Davies (Game of Thrones) as Graham Greene, Stephen Boxer (The Crown) as Kim Philby and Karen Ascoe as Rufa Philby.

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary musical Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on the opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received such acclaim. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the Standing Ovation Musical, as inevitably it ‘brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval’ (Daily Mail). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

It is 1942 and in a war-torn provincial theatre an ageing actor manager, known to his loyal acting company as ‘Sir’, is struggling to cling on to his sanity and complete his two hundred and twenty seventh performance of King Lear. It’s down to Norman, Sir’s devoted dresser, to ensure that the show goes on. For sixteen years Norman has been there to fix Sir’s wig, massage his ego, remind him of his opening lines and provide the sound effects in the storm scene. Norman will be played by one of the UK’s most unique and best loved entertainers. Julian Clary’s successes include television, radio, films, writing and stand-up comedy. His West End starring roles range from London Palladium pantomimes to Taboo. Playing Sir will be Matthew Kelly, winner of an Olivier Award for Of Mice and Men. His other West End credits include Waiting for Godot with Ian McKellen, Comedians and Troilus and Cressida.

NOËL COWARD’S CLASSIC COMEDY
PRIVATE LIVES Noël Coward’s gloriously entertaining Private Lives is the inaugural show from The Nigel Havers Theatre Company which will be touring the country with a wonderful line-up of theatrical gems. Elyot and Amanda, who were once married, find themselves on honeymoon with their new partners, in the same hotel on the French Riviera, admiring the view from adjoining balconies. Their initial horror quickly evaporates and soon they are sharing cocktails. Who knows what the future holds for them now… The Olivier Award-winning Patricia Hodge, one of the country’s most loved actresses, plays Amanda. Nigel Havers, ever suave and thoroughly charming, plays Elyot, the role taken by Noël Coward himself in the original 1930 production.

There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 on Wheeler Street; 7 on King’s Parade and 36 in the Grand Arcade car park. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform the Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket.
