welcome Welcome to our spring/summer 2013 season. Even after nearly ten years and thirty seasons the novelty of preparing each one for our Theatre has never worn off. By the time we reach brochure stage, and my indecision has finally got too much for our marketing team, I often feel like I am sending my first-born child off into the world. Have we got a good mix of classic drama, new writing, great comedy, opera and dance? Have we got the right balance between subsidised and commercial theatre? Will it sell well and will it give our patrons some truly memorable experiences? So here it is: the best we can do and I suspect it is one of the best programmes in regional theatre. I hope you agree. From the whimsy and nostalgia of Steptoe and Son to the laugh-out-loud moments of Noises Off and the truly impressive Lenny Henry in Fences, alongside the pure terror of The Woman in Black and the cringe worthy, but vaguely familiar drinks gathering in Mike Leigh’s classic Abigail’s Party, we truly have an embarrassment of theatrical riches. As if that wasn’t enough, you can experience the joy of Mozart’s masterpiece Così fan tutte or the sheer physicality of the BalletBoyz, while our younger patrons will delight in the genius of Phillip Pullman’s gem I Was a Rat and the classic bedtime story of The Gruffalo’s Child. I hope we have given you everything you could ever want, and more, from your Theatre. As I write, I can hear the strains of the James Bond theme blasting up from our rehearsal rooms as the panto company make their final preparations for this years show. Has Dame Trott turned into a villain? Will Jack get some help from Bond? Come along to Jack and the Beanstalk to find out, and join in the fun. Christmas in Cambridge wouldn’t feel right without a trip to the best traditional panto in the region. So, do please let us know what you think about our programme. These days it’s obligatory to say why don’t you post on our Facebook page or send us a tweet on Twitter. On the other hand, you could just write us a letter, telephone us or have a chat with us in the Foyer. However you choose to do it, please do get in touch. Us theatre folk are always secretly craving applause! Thank you, as ever, for your steadfast support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre.
With kindest regards,

Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 February Cambridge University Marlowe Society presents
By William Shakespeare Directed by Michael Fentiman
“There had she not been long but she became a joyful mother of two goodly sons; And, which was strange, the one so like the other As could not be distinguish’d but by names.” The Marlowe Society return with Shakespeare’s most delightfully mischievous of farces, The Comedy Of Errors. A case of dual mistaken identity that confounds and amuses at every hilarious turn, this is a young Shakespeare at his most humourous, resonant with the themes of loss, family and identity that will shape his future work. When Antipholus and his manservant, Dromio, arrive in Ephesus, little do they know that their estranged twins – also Antipholus and Dromio – live in the city. With not one, but two sets of identical twins unwittingly wreaking havoc on the streets, the stage is set for a series of spousal mishaps, mistaken identities and hilarious errors that give the play its title. The Marlowe Society have an established reputation in Cambridge for their fresh and inventive approach to interpeting Shakespeare’s plays. Its alumni include Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Derek Jacobi, Tilda Swinton and Sam Mendes.

DAILY TELEGRAPH
After a triumphant West End run, Lindsay Posner’s acclaimed revival of one of the most popular plays ever written comes to Cambridge. Beverly, and estate agent husband Laurence, have invited round new neighbours, Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue, twitchy about the party her fifteen year old daughter, Abigail, is throwing over the road. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery. Comedy, drama and tragedy combine into an iconic piece of theatre. Mike Leigh is one of Britain’s most influential theatre and film directors. His numerous awards have included the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Secrets and Lies and an Oscar for Topsy Turvy. Lindsay Posner recently directed the allstar revival of Noises Off at the Old Vic and Butley, A View from the Bridge and Fiddler on the Roof in the West End.

Inspiration for the much-loved Oscar-winning movie, Driving Miss Daisy is the charming and poignant tale of the unlikely, long-lasting friendship that blossoms between a prickly, elderly southern matriarch, Daisy Werthan and her kind-hearted chauffeur, Hoke Colburn who is employed by Daisy’s son Boolie Werthan. As the wheels turn and the decades roll by against a backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, the pair slowly transcend their differences and ultimately grow to rely on each other far more than either ever expected. Sparklingly funny, irresistibly heart-warming and with a wonderful much-loved cast, Driving Miss Daisy is the must-see show of 2013.

Adapted and Directed by Emma Rice
Two Men. Two World Wars. Two lives knitted together as tight as a trice darned sock. Bound together by birth, business and bloody bad luck, Albert and Harold Steptoe wake up every morning to the same old, same old, same sickening sight of each other. Do they even notice the world turning as they cling on? There are ladies if they would only look around them, and space travel… and Cliff Richard! Adapted from the legendary scripts of Galton and Simpson, this new co-production with West Yorkshire Playhouse charts the surprising dance of father and son. This is for anyone who has had a parent, anyone who has had a child, anyone who has wanted to tear the walls down and run across the fields naked. Darkly comic, and deeply moving, this is a 20th century icon, re-imagined for the new generation.

OBSERVER on Roger McGough’s Tartuffe
Master wordsmith Roger McGough dips his quill into a Molière classic in this mockery of manners and morals set amid 17th century French aristocracy. Considered by many to be Molière’s best work, The Misanthrope will again join the creative forces of McGough, Director Gemma Bodinetz and English Touring Theatre to complete a tricolour of Molière comedies following the huge successes of Tartuffe and The Hypochondriac. Poet Alceste is disgusted with French society. Powdered fops gossip in code and be-jewelled coquettes whisper behind fans wherever he looks. In pursuit of honesty, he embarks on a one-man crusade against forked-tongues, frippery and fakery. But could the woman he has fallen in love with be the worst culprit of all? And in this artificial world will his revolution prove just revolting?

Monday 15 – Saturday 20 April Theatre Royal Bath Productions presents
Fences By August Wilson Directed by Paulette Randall
Starring
Lenny Henry
‘One of the richest theatrical experiences I have ever had in the theatre. I wasn’t just moved. I was transfixed.’ NEW YORK POST
Following his triumphant performance as Othello in the West End, Lenny Henry takes on one of the 20th century’s most unforgettable characters. Troy Maxson was once a gifted athlete but was denied his turn at the big time and now struggles through daily life in Pittsburgh. Resentful of a world he believes has denied him chances at every turn, he takes out his anger on a sports-obsessed son and his loyal wife. Fences is one of the greatest American dramas of the 20th century, and winner of the New York Drama Critics’ Award, two Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Set between the Korean and Vietnam wars, it is the story of a family trying to hold itself together and of what happens when a strong man is robbed of his dreams – a universal story which will touch a chord in every heart.

Monday 22 – Saturday 27 April Bill Kenwright Presents the Live Theatre Newcastle and National Theatre co-production of
‘Lee Hall’s superb play’
‘Everyone should see it’
DAILY TELEGRAPH
THE TIMES
Originally produced by Newcastle’s acclaimed Live Theatre, and following sellout seasons at the National Theatre, in the West End and on Broadway, Bill Kenwright presents the award winning play The Pitmen Painters. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

Richard Alston Dance Company Unfinished Business Lachrymae The Devil in the Detail
‘Witty, chic… The whole inventive work is a delight’ SUNDAY TIMES
‘A thing of truth and beauty’ INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY
The Richard Alston Dance Company return to Cambridge Arts Theatre with a programme of three pieces all accompanied by live music. Unfinished Business is danced to the beautiful, lucid and flowing music of Mozart – the two movements of an unfinished piano sonata, Opus K533. To these, Alston has added an extraordinary arrangement of Mozart’s brilliant Gigue in D by the Italian virtuoso Federico Busoni, creating a third movement and bringing things to a rousing close. Lachrymae, set to the compassionate and tender music of Benjamin Britten, for viola and piano, spins emotional variations on a gentle song by John Dowland – quietly but deeply moving. Richard Alston has revived his effervescent The Devil In The Detail, inspired by the music of ‘King of Ragtime’ Scott Joplin. Irresistible classics such as ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ and ‘The Entertainer’ are blended with the lightness and finesse of Alston’s choreography.
