This season sees us venture into doing more of our own in-house productions. We have always produced our panto in-house, along with a number of student and amateur shows each year. As part of a longer-term strategy to further increase the range and quality of productions we are able to offer, we are producing two new productions in-house this season. The Shakespeare Revue is an irreverent cabaret-style musical with songs and sketches celebrating all things Bard related. Featuring songs and sketches from many of our best known comedians, an in-depth knowledge of the Shakespearean canon is most definitely not required! We will be taking the show on the road to six further theatres this autumn and hope it will delight theatregoers around the country as much as it does in Cambridge.
Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. Registered in England No. 03536370 Registered Charity No. 1069912. Registered Office: 6 St Edward’s Passage, Cambridge CB2 3PJ VAT Registration No. 229 1368 04
84 Charing Cross Road chronicles the touching correspondence between an impoverished New York author and the manager of a London bookshop, revealing the enduring power of friendship and community, celebrating a love of books and literature and reminding us all that we need to get on and live life before it is too late. The play sees us pair Hollywood and Broadway star Stefanie Powers with the ever-brilliant Clive Francis, fresh from his National Theatre triumph in Les Blancs. If it is successful in Cambridge we hope we can give it a future life in the West End and beyond. These productions are a huge step for us and we are working with two of the best producers in the business, Lee Dean (Gypsy, Blithe Spirit) and Kenny Wax (Top Hat, The Play That Goes Wrong) to make them happen. Please come and support us and I hope the productions meet with your approval. Finally, preparations are now fully underway for our biggest in-house production: this year’s pantomime extravaganza, Dick Whittington and his Cat. We are delighted to welcome back the ever-popular Matt Crosby as Sarah the Cook for what promises to be another thrilling adventure in panto-land. Come along with all your loved ones for what is sure to be the best family Christmas treat in Cambridge. Thank you, as ever, for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With kindest regards,

PRIOR TO THE WEST END
Two of the UK’s favourite actors star in Noël Coward’s Present Laughter, undoubtedly one of his funniest plays, looking at life behind the theatrical curtain. Actor, charmer and diva, Garry Essendine is determined to disregard his advancing years by revelling in endless tantrums and casual affairs. About to depart for Africa, he finds himself besieged by a bevy of would-be seductresses, not to mention his long-suffering secretary, his estranged wife, and an obsessed young playwright. As he attempts to disentangle himself from their clutches and demands, the sparkling comedy escalates.
Miles Davis and John Coltrane were born just four months apart in 1926. Together, during the 1950s and 60s they formed one of the most significant partnerships in jazz. This special 90th birthday concert, organised by the multi award-winning Cambridge based saxophonist Dan Forshaw, will showcase some of the seminal recordings in jazz such as Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme and Blue Train. Joining Dan will be members of his quartet and special guests Martin Shaw, the BBC Big Band trumpet legend and alto saxophonist, Tony Kofi.

Hollywood and Broadway legend, Stefanie Powers, stars in a major new production of 84 Charing Cross Road, alongside Clive Francis as Frank Doel, reprising the role he played to critical acclaim in 2015. Adapted from Helene Hanff’s best-selling book, 84 Charing Cross Road has been delighting audiences since its premiere in 1981. A tender and heartwarming tale of transatlantic friendship, this bittersweet comedy is based on the extraordinary true story of the remarkable relationship that developed over 20 years between a vivacious New York writer and a London bookseller. Through their exchange of humorous and often intimate correspondence a snapshot of Britain from the post-war 1940’s to the swinging 60’s is revealed, alongside a touching human story that still resonates today. Stefanie Powers plays Helene Hanff. A star of stage and screen with a career spanning over 50 years, Powers is best known for her role opposite Robert Wagner in Hart to Hart, which ran over 5 series and 8 TV movies between 1979 and 1996. Her extensive film and TV credits include McLintock!, The Magnificent Seven Ride Again, The Rockford Files, The Bionic Woman, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. Clive Francis’ recent credits include Les Blancs (National Theatre), Enron, The Madness of King George III (West End), The Queen and Mr Turner; he will shortly be appearing in the major new Netflix drama, The Crown, written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Audience).

The triennial Cambridge Greek Play returns to the Arts Theatre. After the success of 2010’s Agamemnon and 2013’s Prometheus/Frogs double bill, the same creative team return to Cambridge for another ground-breaking pairing of tragedy and comedy. The tradition of performing a play in Greek every three years at Cambridge University extends back to 1882, with alumni including Rupert Brooke, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Tom Hiddleston. This is a unique opportunity to hear the extraordinary language of these two great plays performed in the original Greek, with a newly commissioned orchestral score by composer Alex Silverman. The 2016 Cambridge Greek Play contrasts two very different women, who both ask for help to overturn the patriarchy. But while Antigone is left alone to bury her brother, Lysistrata persuades all of the women of Greece to join her strike. These rich and deeply resonant plays make for a moving, hilarious and thought-provoking night of theatre. Suitable for 14+

By Richard Stirling With Jason Merrells Directed by Matthew Gould Lighting by Mike Robertson Kensington Palace, 1993. She was the Diana of her day. That day has gone. But HRH The Princess Margaret, the most glamorous figure of her generation, has a final chance to be of service. While the Royal Family is at Balmoral, she removes several bags of correspondence from the Queen Mother’s home, including potentially sensational letters from Prince Charles – and Diana, Princess of Wales. She means to burn them all. But there are other papers. Some of them relate to Margaret herself, and a scandal as dangerous as anything since. When an ex-gangster arrives to bring her even closer to her past, the Queen’s sister has the choice to make or break her family yet again.

Edward II lives in the shadow of his father, who conquered Wales and waged war to annex Scotland. But can Edward follow his father’s legacy?
TUESDAY – FRIDAY, 7.45PM SATURDAY, 2.30PM AND 8PM:
One of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, The Winter’s Tale, though written at the same period as The Tempest, smashes all the rules that The Tempest follows. Unity of time, place and action and hurled aside as we range across Europe, from court to country, from high tragedy to low comedy, across a time span of sixteen years.
34
The Winter’s Tale tells of a delusional and paranoid king who tears his family apart. But this is the new Shakespeare, after he completed his great tragedies, and the tough struggle for redemption yields flickers of hope. Initial darkness gives way to joy as Time leads the characters to a shattering conclusion...

The nobles of England think not. The King would seem preoccupied in rewarding his male favourites, including the hated Piers Gaveston, than tackling problems at home and abroad. The time has come for Edward to take the lead, but how will he respond when his own wife, together with the senior magnates, act to bring down the King’s circle of flatterers and favourites? And what will the consequences be for the King’s son and heir? Christopher Marlowe’s gripping drama of deceit and responsibility is brought vividly to life by the Marlowe Society, Cambridge University’s leading drama society. The Marlowe return to Cambridge Arts Theatre after their recent acclaimed productions of Measure for Measure and Dr Faustus; it has been responsible for launching the careers of some of Britain’s greatest actors including Ian McKellen, Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and Derek Jacobi.

panto wheels
Panto Wheels is a project, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre, to help children from disadvantaged areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel and/ or tickets. For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts. Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. Many schools also use the pantomime story to inform teaching and learning across the curriculum, helping children encounter subjects, such as Science and Mathematics, in exciting contexts. In our 2015/16 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped over 2600 children from 19 schools and groups experience the magic of Cinderella.

For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
