welcome Welcome to our extended autumn/spring season. Creating a programme for our main stage is an all year-round task and we are constantly on the lookout for the best theatre from the UK and beyond. This season it’s particularly difficult to choose the best productions from such a strong line-up but there are some that deserve special mention as my personal ‘top picks’. We are the final venue on the post-West End tour of Mary Stuart, a huge success for the Almeida Theatre in 2016 and sure to be a sell-out when it visits with the original leads, Juliet Stevenson and Lia Williams, deciding on a coin toss at the start of each performance who takes the role of Queen Elizabeth or Mary Queen of Scots. Fresh from a sell-out West End run, the UK tour of Art, starring Nigel Havers, Stephen Tompkinson and Denis Lawson, begins its life in Cambridge and is sure to have us all pondering the true meaning (or not) of modern art once again. Jemma Redgrave and Oliver Cotton will team up in the intensely moving Duet for One, inspired by the life of Jacqueline du Pré, to tell the story of a celebrated musician whose career is tragically cut short by illness. Two plays visit Cambridge direct from sell-out success at the National Theatre and subsequent West End transfers: James Graham’s hit, This House, offers an apposite insight into today’s political landscape by harking back to the machinations of Labour Whips during a hung parliament in the 1970’s; whilst People, Places & Things, Headlong Theatre’s must-see 2015 production, is a theatrical tourde-force in its depiction of a young woman’s struggle with addiction. Our co-producing efforts continue this season and see us collaborating with more new companies to bring highquality theatre to the regions and our stage. We will be producing, along with Theatre Royal Bath and the Rose Theatre, Kingston, a major UK revival of Tom Stoppard’s celebrated hit, The Real Thing, starring Laurence Fox which opens with us in September; February sees us working with the Touring Consortium and Jonathan Church Productions to produce David Haig in his new Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. play, Pressure, a moving drama about the weatherman tasked with advising Eisenhower’s final preparations for the D-Day landings. Remember that members of our Supporters’ Circle get priority access to on-sale periods of up to two weeks before the general public for most shows. If you’re reading this and wishing you could have booked front row seats for any of our forthcoming productions, contact our Development team for information on how you can get an enhanced theatregoing experience whilst supporting our charitable aims. Please be aware that following professional advice, we have introduced important additional safety measures in the Theatre. We are no longer able to allow rucksacks, holdalls, shopping bags or any bag larger than 35cm x 25cm into the auditorium. This is to eliminate potential trip hazards in our cramped auditorium in the event of an emergency evacuation for whatever reason. You can find full information on our website. I urge you to help us wherever possible by leaving your large bags at home, but if you are not able to, you will be asked to make use of our free cloakroom facilities when you visit. Thank you to all of you who have been supportive of these changes and offered positive feedback on this policy. I do hope you find many things to tempt you in our forthcoming season and we look forward to welcoming you to Cambridge Arts Theatre again soon. With kindest regards,

DAVID STARKEY
HENRY VIII: THE FIRST BREXITEER? Henry VIII bestrides the history of our country like a colossus. He invented the idea of British uniqueness and the Reformation could be defined as the first Brexit, when his ministers devised the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty. For one night only, David Starkey draws on his extraordinary knowledge of Henry’s reign to examine his tumultuous personal life, which pitted religion against politics as brutally as our own age of Isis, offering so many parallels with the Brexit situation we find ourselves in today.

‘The Best Man makes you wish that Vidal were writing the dialogue for the presidential debates’ NY Times
How far would you go to be most powerful man in the world? Martin Shaw (Hobson’s Choice) leads the cast in the timely UK premiere of Gore Vidal’s award-winning play about the race to the White House.
Two opposing presidential party candidates are neck and neck in an unscrupulous battle for the nomination. The only thing that separates the ex-Secretary of State and his populist opponent is an endorsement from a respected ex-President. But where does compromise end and corruption begin? And who in the end will be proven to be “the best man”? One of the UK’s best loved and most respected actors, Martin Shaw first rose to stardom in the late seventies in The Professionals, in which he starred as the hard-hitting Ray Doyle, launching a career that has hardly seen him out of the limelight since. He is best known for starring in the multi award-winning BBC drama Judge John Deed and more recently Inspector George Gently. On stage, his revelatory performance as Lord Goring in Peter Hall’s production of An Ideal Husband earned him an Olivier and a Tony nomination and the coveted New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. Other West End triumphs include the acclaimed Twelve Angry Men, Are You Lonesome Tonight and A Man For All Seasons.

For the first half of Fourteen Days, choreographers Javier de Frutos, Craig Revel Horwood, Iván Pérez and Christopher Wheeldon were teamed with composers Scott Walker, Joby Talbot, Charlotte Harding and Keaton Henson and each given just fourteen days to create their pieces. Playing with the concept of balance and imbalance, the result is an exciting and varied programme of dance and music. Fallen forms the second half of the evening, choreographed by Russell Maliphant and set to a powerful score by French film composer Armand Amar. Fallen won the National Dance Award for Best Modern Choreography in 2013.

Jonathan Tunick Originally produced on Broadway by Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Robert Fryer, Mary Lea Johnson, Martin Richards in association with Dean and Judy Manos The Demon Barber of Fleet Street sets out his stall in Cambridge Operatic Society’s (CaOS) exciting production of Sweeney Todd. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, Sweeney Todd is a tasty theatrical treat that has shocked, awed and thrilled audiences around the world. It tells the tale of Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, who returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. Todd’s bloody revenge becomes a dish served hot by Mrs Lovett, the entrepreneurial and lovestruck proprietress of a pie shop, to queues of hungry Londoners who begin finding her wares very delectable indeed. And the carnage has only just begun! Directed by Chris Cuming, with musical direction by James Harvey, CaOS’ production of Sweeney Todd follows their well-received 2017 production of Annie and the company’s NODA Award-winning Sister Act. Winner of the 1997 Olivier Award for Best New Play, Conor McPherson’s chilling, modern classic The Weir comes to Cambridge as part of a UK tour to mark the play’s twentieth anniversary. In a small Irish town, the locals exchange stories round the crackling fire of Brendan’s pub to while away the hours one stormy night. As the beer and whisky flows, the arrival of a young stranger, haunted by a secret from her past, turns the tales of folklore into something more unsettling. One story, however, is more chilling and more real than any of them could have ever imagined. A shadowy tale delving into the dark corners of human lives, The Weir is a co-production between English Touring Theatre (French Without Tears, The Herbal Bed) and Mercury Theatre Colchester.

Following sell-out runs at the National Theatre and in the West End, this extraordinarily prescient play takes on a new importance in the current political climate. Are we in the midst of a political revolution? Can the country stay united? Roll back to 1974. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. In an era of chaos, both hilarious and shocking, fist fights break out in the parliamentary bars, high-stake tricks and games are played, while sick or dying MPs are carried through the lobby to register their crucial votes as the government is close to falling apart. James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes, who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments. Directed by Jeremy Herrin (People, Places & Things, Wolf Hall), This House gives us a timely, moving and often amusing insight into the workings of British politics.

Following acclaimed productions of The King’s Speech and Single Spies, the same creative team bring you a major new revival of Terence Rattigan’s classic family drama. The Winslow Boy comes to Cambridge direct from the Chichester Festival Theatre and Birmingham Repertory Theatre and is directed by Olivier Award nominated Rachel Kavanaugh. Having been expelled from the Royal Navy College for stealing a five-shilling postal order, young cadet Ronnie Winslow’s entire family are pulled apart by the repercussions of this charge. Set against the values of 1910 Edwardian London, the Winslow family fight to clear his name or face social ostracism as the case becomes a national scandal. Based on a real-life event, The Winslow Boy is a courageous and often delicately humorous window into the class and political hypocrisy of the time. A gripping masterpiece that is engrossing for Rattigan lovers or newcomers alike. Star cast to be announced.

panto wheels
Panto Wheels is a charitable project, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Limited, to help children from disadvantaged areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel and/or tickets. For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts. Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. Many schools also use the pantomime story to inform teaching and learning across the curriculum, helping children encounter subjects, such as Science and Mathematics, in exciting contexts. In our 2016/17 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped over 2600 children from 19 schools and groups experience the magic of Dick Whittington and his Cat. £5 will help 1 child £25 will help 5 children £125 will help 25 children £250 will help 50 children

The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
