welcome Welcome to our autumn 2018 season which sees us programming through until Christmas and beyond. This year we continue to produce more of our own in-house work, taking productions on tour around the UK to complement the wide range of touring productions we host on our stage. Our in-house producing enhances the mix of productions we can present at our Theatre and in the future could provide valuable income to help ensure our long term sustainability. As I write this, we are nearing the halfway mark in our UK tour of 84 Charing Cross Road, starring Stefanie Powers and Clive Francis. This heart-warming play, with its life-affirming themes of friendship and the power of the written word, is captivating audiences on tour and makes a welcome return to Cambridge in June. We have also successfully transferred our first West End production in well over thirty years with David Haig’s wonderful D-Day drama, Pressure, now playing at the Ambassadors Theatre following a highly successful regional tour. On our own stage we continue to present the highest quality touring theatre available; whether it is Jonathan Pryce and Dame Eileen Atkins starring in the pre-West End drama The Height of the Storm (written by The Father playwright, Florian Zeller), the first tour of Alan Bennett’s The Habit of Art with Matthew Kelly, or the perennially popular monster hits The Full Monty and An Inspector Calls, our latest season offers something for everyone regardless of theatrical tastes. The stars of The Young Ones Adrian Edmondson and Nigel Planer reunite onstage in the hilarious new comedy Vulcan 7, whilst Gavin & Stacey’s Ruth Jones will be making her Arts Theatre debut in The Nightingales, a sparkling new comedy about an ‘a cappella’ group. Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. Registered in England No. 03536370 Registered Charity No. 1069912. Registered Office: 6 St Edward’s Passage, Cambridge CB2 3PJ VAT Registration No. 229 1368 04
Serious drama buffs might be drawn to the new adaptation of the hit film Rain Man, starring Mathew Horne (also from Gavin & Stacey!) and Downton Abbey’s Ed Speleers, the touching adaptation of Still Alice with a sensational central performance from Sharon Small, or the star-studded thriller The Case of the Frightened Lady. We are delighted to be one of the first venues on the tour of Emma Rice’s new play, Wise Children, which visits Cambridge after opening at London’s Old Vic Theatre. The major new stage adaptation of the hit film Shakespeare in Love will warm even the most hardened of hearts; and if the Bard himself is your thing, Shakespeare’s Globe bring us three of his most-loved works: The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew. As ever, our younger audiences are well catered for with the evergreen Horrible Histories bringing their Terrible Tudors and Awful Egyptians shows back by truly horrible demand. And the biggest hit of them all, our traditional family pantomime Aladdin is now on sale! Our helpful and knowledgeable Box Office staff are always on hand to advise you on the best availability during the busy Christmas period so book early to avoid disappointment. Thank you as ever for all your support and friendly feedback and I hope to see you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With my best wishes

Adapted from Helene Hanff’s best-selling book, 84 Charing Cross Road is a tender and heartwarming tale of transatlantic friendship. ‘All this time They’ve been just one word in a stupid rhyme So they picked up a pen and a microphone History’s about to get overthrown.’
From Tudor queens to pop princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII finally take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into a 75 minute celebration of 21st century sisterly sass-itude. These Queens may have green sleeves but their lipstick is rebellious red. Following six sold out and highly acclaimed ‘showcase’ performances at the Arts Theatre in London, this homegrown histo-remixed pop-concert musical by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss arrives at the Cambridge Arts Theatre this July before opening in the West End in August. The Merchant of Venice Twelfth Night The Taming of the Shrew
Shakespeare’s Globe returns to Cambridge Arts Theatre with three of the playwright’s most popular plays – The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night. How did a company tour in Shakespeare’s day? We know that when the theatres closed, a small group of actors, juggling a variety of roles in three or four plays from their extensive repertoire, would leave London and head off on tour. So, following in the tradition of the Globe’s resident playwright, a company of eight actors will be bringing three plays to Cambridge. Pick your favourite play to see, or see all three across a couple of days for the ultimate Shakespearean experience this summer. ‘The combination of Shakespeare, the Globe and touring ticks every box for me. The chance to share those glorious words and my experience of playing that beautiful theatre with audiences throughout the world excites me beyond measure.’ Brendan O’Hea, Director Wed 29 Aug Thurs 30 Aug Fri 31 Aug Sat 1 Sept

A NEW COMEDY STARRING
This hilarious new comedy about the actor’s life is written by and co-stars Adrian Edmondson and Nigel Planer (Comic Strip Presents...,Filthy, Rich & Catflap, The Young Ones) and is directed by Steven Marmion, Artistic Director of Soho Theatre.
ADRIAN EDMONDSON
Gary and Hugh were students at RADA together. Now in their sixties, they meet in an Icelandic, on the set of a fantasy movie. Hugh has had a plodding career but has landed the role of Vulcan’s butler – a small but regular role – and he’s making his seventh film for the franchise. Gary is a one-time Hollywood A-lister who has fallen on lean times and is playing a guest monster with four hours in make-up and one word in the script. Sparks fly inside the trailer as old wounds are opened and outside the trailer things are not going to plan either: the director’s gone AWOL, the catering truck’s on the wrong side of a ravine, and the volcanic activity is growing more and more lively by the minute… Adrian Edmondson is best known for his role in Bottom, which he wrote with Rik Mayall. On stage they starred together in Waiting For Godot and Ade also appeared in the West End run of The Rocky Horror Show. More recently he has appeared in War & Peace, Twelfth Night at the RSC, and in a cameo role as Captain Peavey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Nigel Planer has worked extensively in the West End with leading roles in the original productions of Evita, Chicago, We Will Rock You, Wicked, Hairspray, Feelgood and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He won a BRIT award in 1984 and has been nominated for Olivier, TMA, What’s On Stage, and BAFTA awards. He created the spoof actor character Nicholas Craig and featured in the Doctor Who: Live tour as Vorgenson, The Inter-Galactic Showman.

Based on the Oscar winning film which famously starred Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman and won Oscar’s for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor, Bill Kenwright presents the inaugural Classic Screen to Stage Theatre Company production of Rain Man. When self-centred salesman Charlie Babbitt discovers that his long-lost brother Raymond, an autistic savant with a genius for numbers, has inherited the family fortune, he sets out to get ‘his half’. Charlie ‘borrows’ Raymond from the institution where he has spent most of his life and the two brothers embark on a trip across America where Charlie soon discovers that Raymond is worth more than he could have ever imagined… Mathew Horne (Raymond Babbit) is best known for playing Gavin in the much-loved, double BAFTA winning comedy series Gavin & Stacey, as well as the BBC series The Catherine Tate Show, and Jack Whitehall’s Bad Education. His most recent West End stage credit was The Miser opposite Griff Rhys Jones and Lee Mack. Ed Speleers (Charlie Babbit) starred as Jimmy Kent in the Golden Globe award winning series Downton Abbey, his breakthrough came after landing the lead role in the fantasy blockbuster Eragon, since then he has starred in many films and TV series and has just been announced as joining the cast of Outlander. Alice strives to remain true to the woman she has always been, while relationships shift within her family, in her work and most importantly with herself. DAVID YELLAND
Alan Bennett is one of our greatest and most celebrated playwrights, with a plethora of stage and screen blockbusters including The History Boys, The Madness of King George III and Talking Heads. He is applauded as a genius for his sharp character observations and treasured for the way he beautifully balances wit, wistfulness and compassion. In The Habit of Art, Bennett gives us a play about a meeting between the poet WH Auden and the composer Benjamin Britten. Exploring friendship, rivalry and heartache, this multi-layered masterpiece examines the joy, pain and emotional cost of creativity. This production, directed by Philip Franks, marks the first ever revival of the play and stars the Olivier Award-winning Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men, Toast, Pride and Prejudice), David Yelland (Chariots of Fire, The Crown) and Veronica Roberts (Peak Practice, Tenko)

EMMA RICE (DIRECTOR)
“Let’s have all the skeletons out of the closet, today, of all days!” It’s 23 April, Shakespeare’s birthday. In Brixton, Nora and Dora Chance - twin chorus girls born and bred south of the river – are celebrating their 70th birthday. Over the river in Chelsea, their father and greatest actor of his generation Melchior Hazard turns 100 on the same day. As does his twin brother Peregrine. If, in fact, he’s still alive. And if, in truth, Melchior is their real father after all... A big, bawdy tangle of theatrical joy and pain, Wise Children is a celebration of show business, family, forgiveness and hope. Expect show girls and Shakespeare, sex and scandal, mischief and mistaken identity - and butterflies by the thousand. Emma Rice (Romantics Anonymous, Tristan & Yseult, The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk and Brief Encounter) brings her unique, musical and exuberantly impish vision to Angela Carter’s great last novel, Wise Children, at the same time launching her new theatre company of the same name.

panto wheels
Panto Wheels is a charitable project, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Limited, to help children from disadvantaged areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel and/or tickets. For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts. Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. Many schools also use the pantomime story to inform teaching and learning across the curriculum, helping children encounter subjects, such as Science and Mathematics, in exciting contexts. In our 2017/18 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped over 2,000 children from 12 schools and groups experience the magic of Jack and the Beanstalk. £250 will help 50 children £1,000 will help 200 children £2,500 will help 500 children
To make a donation of any amount to help even more children attend the pantomime this year, please contact Kirsty Keegan on 01223 578908 or email kkeegan@cambridgeartstheatre.com

SUMMER MENU LAUNCH At The Cambridge Chop House our focus has always been on British no-nonsense food. With the launch of our new menu this summer we’ve gone a step further - our chef Jason has buried himself in historical cookery books and unearthed some real gems. Of course you can still enjoy our much-loved classics (a great quality steak, chop or suet pudding) but here are a few of the more unusual dishes you might discover on your next visit... SALMAGUNDI C. 17TH CENTURY — a decadent banquet salad arranged in layers comprising a hodgepodge of ingredients such as cooked meats, fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and flowers. Ours includes pink shrimps, bacon, peach, tomato & mixed leaves. BRAISED CHICKEN HEARTS 19TH CENTURY. — our variation on devilled kidneys, a classic Victorian breakfast dish. We braise the chicken hearts with spiced sausage in red wine and chicken stock for 2 hours until they melt in the mouth. C.
FAT RASCAL
19TH CENTURY. — you may end up as one after one too many sticky toffee puddings, but a fat rascal is also a type of scone made famous by Betty’s Tea Rooms. Fitting then to serve one with our Earl Grey Burnt Cream.
ORIGIN YORKSHIRE C.
SAMBOCADE 1390. — an almost forgotten recipe worthy of resurrection. Sambocade is a Medieval elderflower cheesecake. “Do þerto sugar the þridde part, & somdel whyte of ayren, & shake þerin blomes of elren; & bake it vp with eurose, & messe it forth.” We’re doing just that... C.
RUMBLEDETHUMPS ORIGIN SCOTLAND. — a simple but hearty proposition from our Caledonian cousins, akin to the English bubble & squeak or Irish colcannon. It gets its name from the noise in the kitchen as the tatties are rumbled and thumped in preparation. Ours uses potato, carrot, onion, cabbage, Perl Wen cheese and cherries. PARMO
TEESIDE C. 1958. — arguably Middlesbrough’s greatest contribution to British street food. The story begins with Nicos Harris, a chef fighting with the American army in WWII. After being wounded in France he was hospitalised in the UK and ended up settling in Middlesbrough where he opened an American grill. Essentially a breaded cutlet, the dish is smothered in parmesan from which its name was coined. Our version is topped with smoked beef brisket. Last year the mayor of Teeside launched a campaign to secure Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status for the beloved Parmo. ORIGIN
