welcome Welcome to our autumn 2015 season. Programming a season of high quality theatre is a Herculean task and one of the most rewarding parts of my job is the moment when I know that I have got the perfect mix of the best shows to satisfy our audience’s diverse and sophisticated theatrical tastes. This is without a doubt our best season ever and the perfect showcase for our Theatre as we head into our 80th anniversary year. King Charles III is a ‘future’ history play, which sees the new King of England, Charles III struggle to reconcile his constitutional role with his strongly-held personal views. It was an enormous West End hit, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play and is now on its way to Broadway. It’s provocative, laugh out loud funny and truly great theatre. The Father is with us for two weeks and you can only see it in Cambridge before it transfers to the West End. Starring Kenneth Cranham in a career-defining performance, the award-winning play is a moving portrait of a family living with the impact of dementia. It’s lifeaffirming, humorous and reminds us of the continuing need to see the world through the eyes of others; in short, it is must-see theatre. Bad Jews comes to us following its triumphant West End run and manages to combine deeply irreverent comedy with a profound examination of what it means to be religious in today’s world. In Handbagged, also on its first post West End tour, we discover, with hilarious effect, what two icons born in the same year - the Queen and Mrs. T - talked about in their weekly audiences. As one critic wrote, it really is “a clever mischievous pleasure with the sharp teeth of a kicked corgi”. English Touring Theatre will be bringing us what promises to be a fresh take on Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, in an adaptation by leading poet, Simon Armitage; Original Theatre, who brought us the wonderful Birdsong, will doubtless excel with their new production of Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path, a classic tale of WWII pilots and their loved ones waiting behind; the risqué puppets from Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. Registered in England No. 03536370 Registered Charity No. 1069912. Registered Office: 6 St Edward’s Passage, Cambridge CB2 3PJ VAT Registration No. 213 2677 84
Avenue Q will once again have us rolling in the aisles with a brand new tour for 2015, and CaOS will delight us all with their rousing production of Sister Act. As ever our younger audience members have not been forgotten with a week long visit from our ever-popular friend, The Gruffalo, and our traditional half term treat Horrible Histories: Groovy Greeks and Incredible Invaders. Our theatrical year will finish on a real high with our new production of Cinderella. The classic tale of rags to riches will be given the full Arts Theatre treatment and is sure to combine our classic panto ingredients with a riotous contemporary twist. It’s the biggest seller of them all, so book early to make sure your family enjoys Cambridgeshire’s traditional Christmas treat. If you are struggling to make your choices (I certainly would be!) please don’t hesitate to phone our friendly and knowledgeable Box Office. The efficiency of online booking has its place, but there is no substitute for a chat with real life theatre-lovers. As many of you know, our award-winning new foyers and bars are now opening earlier at 6pm. We think we can offer a unique alternative to the high street for a glass of wine and bite to eat with friends before the show. What’s more, as a charity every penny you spend on your cup of coffee or gin and tonic provides much-needed income to support the ongoing work of our Theatre - so please join us for a drink both before the show and during the interval. Thank you as ever for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With kindest regards,
Dave Murphy Chief Executive Cambridge Arts Theatre 6 St Edward’s Passage Cambridge CB2 3PJ Administration: 01223 578933

DAVID STARKEY; MAGNA CARTA
The UK’s leading constitutional historian, known for his forthright views, visits Cambridge Arts Theatre to talk about the Magna Carta; the 13th century century agreement that, for the first time, limited the power of the monarch by stating the basic rights, privileges, and liberties of leading citizens and clergy. David Starkey is a Cambridge educated grammar school boy who became a respected LSE lecturer, a uniquely abrasive debater on Radio 4’s Moral Maze, a controversial contributor to Question Time, and the creator and presenter of many very popular historical TV series on such subjects as Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, the Monarchy, the Churchills and Music and Monarchy. There are few more stimulating thinkers, and few who understand better the way the most powerful have thought throughout our history.

(GREEN WING, TWENTY TWELVE)
Alan Bennett sealed his reputation as the master of observation and brilliant comic phrasing with this series of groundbreaking monologues, originally filmed for television. This is a rare opportunity to see three of the original Talking Heads, at once darkly comic, poignant and uplifting. Widely regarded as modern classics, this new revival stars three exceptional actors, Stephanie Cole, Siobhan Redmond and Karl Theobald.
A CREAM CRACKER UNDER THE SETTEE
Stephanie Cole stars as 75 year-old widow Doris, obsessive about tidiness and maintaining her independence. Prostrate on the floor after a fall, she spies a cream cracker under the settee, which she determines to use as evidence against her incompetent home help. The original production was nominated for three BAFTA awards.
A CHIP IN THE SUGAR
Graham Whittaker is a devoted son whose life begins to unravel when he discovers his aging mother has taken up with an old flame. Alan Bennett himself played Graham in the original production in 1988.
A LADY OF LETTERS
The acerbic Miss Ruddock watches the world from behind her curtains and constantly dashes off letters expressing her ill-informed opinions, one of which pushes her to the brink with unexpected but liberating consequences.

TUESDAY 25 – SUNDAY 30 AUGUST GLOBE THEATRE ON TOUR PRESENTS
OUTDOOR PERFORMANCES IN THE MASTER’S GARDEN, CORPUS CHRISTI COLLEGE (ENTRANCE VIA FREE SCHOOL LANE)
By William Shakespeare Claudio loves Hero and Hero Claudio and nothing seems capable of keeping them apart. Claudio’s friend Benedick loves Beatrice and Beatrice Benedick, but (because neither will admit it) nothing seems capable of bringing them together. Only the intrigues of a resentful prince force Benedick to prove his love for Beatrice – by killing his best friend. Driven along by a romance all the more charming for being in denial, Much Ado About Nothing is a miracle of comic and dramatic suspense and gives us, in the bantering Beatrice and Benedick, two of Shakespeare’ s wittiest, most endearing pair of lovers. There will be no seating for these performances, but there will be some limited room for patrons to bring their own chairs. This will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and so cannot be guaranteed. There will be limited wheelchair spaces provided. Performances go ahead in all but the most inclement weather conditions so please dress accordingly. Admission will be 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

The most acclaimed new play of the decade comes to Cambridge Arts Theatre, starring Kenneth Cranham (Shine on Harvey Moon, Oliver!) and Claire Skinner (Outnumbered, Silk). Now eighty years old, Andre was once a tap dancer. He lives with his daughter Anne and her husband Antoine. Or was he an engineer whose daughter Anne lives in London with her new lover, Pierre? The thing is, he is still wearing his pyjamas and he can’t find his watch. He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control…
The Father is the winner of France’s highest theatrical honour, the 2014 Molière Award for Best Play, and in Christopher Hampton’s crisp and witty translation has dazzled audiences and critics alike at the Theatre Royal Bath and the Tricycle Theatre.

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE Day, Flare Path is the epic wartime romance by acclaimed playwright Terence Rattigan. Set in 1942, against a backdrop of heartache and quiet bravery, Flare Path paints an evocative portrait of life in wartime Britain for the RAF bomber crews, their wives and sweethearts, who were left awaiting their return. RAF pilot Teddy and his wife, former actress Patricia, have their marriage tested to the limit by the surprise arrival of her ex-lover Peter Kyle. Highly charged drama with a truly authentic taste of the fear, camaraderie and passion combine when an unexpected and dangerous mission over Germany puts Patricia at the centre of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies. Recently seen in London’s West End, this brand new production will be directed by rising star Justin Audibert (RSC, Young Vic, West Yorkshire Playhouse). Directed by
Stephen Daldry
From Stephen Daldry, the Oscar nominated Director of The Reader, The Hours and Billy Elliot, comes the multi award-winning West End production of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller, An Inspector Calls. Hailed as the theatrical event of our generation, winning more awards than any other play in history, this landmark production from the National Theatre has thrilled audiences in the West End, on Broadway and throughout the world with its epic and wildly imaginative staging, raw emotion, evocative score, lashing rain and chilling suspense. When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences.

panto babes auditions
First round: Sunday 6 September and callbacks: Saturday 12 September Are you aged 9 – 13 years? Do you have a passion for performing? Have you got what it takes to perform on stage at Cambridge Arts Theatre this Christmas? We are looking for a group of 20 talented boys and girls between the ages of 9 – 13 to join the cast of Cinderella as panto babes.
We will be holding an audition workshop on Sunday 6 September. It will be informal and fun, and not only will you have the chance to showcase your dancing and singing skills in front of a panel of judges, you’ll learn some fun dance routines and hopefully make some new friends! To book your place at the audition please call 01223 503333. Full details will be available on the Arts Theatre website: www.cambridgeartstheatre.com. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so early booking is recommended. Please note: There is a £5 administration charge per auditionee which must be paid when booking your place. All proceeds go to the Arts Theatre Panto Wheels Scheme. Due to changes in Children’s Entertainment Licensing rules we will no longer be able to cast children under the age of 9 in our pantomime. We’re sorry for any disappointment this may cause and would like to personally thank all of our younger auditionees and hope that we see them again soon.
panto wheels
Panto Wheels is a scheme, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre, to help children from culturally and socially deprived areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel and tickets, which can prove prohibitive. For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts. Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. Many schools also use the pantomime story to inform teaching and learning across the curriculum, helping children encounter subjects, such as Science and Mathematics, in exciting contexts. In our 2014/15 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped 2420 children from 14 schools come and experience the magic of Aladdin. To make a donation to help even more children attend the pantomime this year, please contact Victoria Willingale on 01223 578912 or email vwillingale@cambridgeartstheatre.com If you would like to discuss the educational resources for any of the shows featured in the brochure please contact Victoria Willingale, Marketing and Education Officer on 01223 578912 or email at vwillingale@cambridgeartstheatre.com.

There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 in Wheeler Street; 7 in King’s Parade and 36 in Grand Arcade car park. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
