welcome Welcome to our spring/ summer 2015 season. One of the characteristics of us all at the Arts Theatre is that we want to share our love of theatre with as many customers, regular and new, young and old, as we possibly can. Our mission as a theatrical charity is to inspire and nurture a lifelong of the performing arts; whether it is a three year old visiting us for the first time or a lifelong theatre aficionado we want everyone to walk out of our Theatre having had a truly memorable experience. This season is a perfect vehicle for us to show off our Theatre and the very best that the British performing arts can offer. David Suchet is returning to Cambridge after nearly ten years in what promises to be a comedic tour-de-force as Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of being Earnest; Kneehigh, the company that produced one of my all time favourites, Brief Encounter, are bringing us their new adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca; Chichester Festival Theatre will be bringing us their wonderful new production of The King’s Speech; the classic anti war musical Oh What a Lovely War will be challenging us anew in Theatre Royal Stratford East’s critically-acclaimed revival; the Royal Shakespeare Company will be returning in Thomas Middleton’s bawdy A Mad World My Masters and finally the hapless Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, who brought us the hilarious The Play That Goes Wrong will be reliving the nightmare in Peter Pan Goes Wrong.

to have the Richard Alston Dance Company back at the Arts Theatre in what will be their twentieth anniversary season and proud to continue our relationship with the award winning Ballet Black fresh from their Royal Opera House triumphs. As I write we are just about to open Aladdin, our traditional family pantomime. The ever-popular Matt Crosby will be giving us his Widow Twankey, Stephen Beckett will once again reveal his inner baddie as the evil Abanazer and we are delighted to welcome Lowri Walton as Aladdin; leading West End Director David Grindley will be on hand to make sure they all follow the rules and to ensure this year’s production is as spectacular as ever. Join us for what promises to be the ultimate magic carpet ride and have a smile on your face for the whole Christmas season, and do book early as many of the peak performances are already selling out. I hope this season does the trick and creates many new theatre lovers and that it will once again remind many of you just how lucky we are to have this amazing theatre here in Cambridge. Thank you as ever for your loyal support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre With kindest regards,

Dave Murphy Chief Executive

There will be plenty of Room on the Broom for our Cambridge Arts Theatre youngest audience members and fresh from his West End 6 St Edward’s Passage Triumph, The Tiger Who Came to Tea will be coming back Cambridge for seconds, whilst The Children’s Touring Partnership, CB2 3PJ who brought us the beautiful Swallows and Amazons, will Administration: 01223 578933 be staging the heart-rending premiere of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. By Thomas Middleton Edited by Sean Foley & Phil Porter Director Sean Foley

HHHH ‘A disgracefully entertaining evening’ DAILY TELEGRAPH

HHHHH ‘Riotously funny rendition of Thomas Middleton’s Jacobean romp’ DAILY MAIL

London’s Soho, 1956. Here, glamour rubs up against filth, and it likes it! The posh mix with musicians, whores and racketeers; virginity is ‘no city trade’, and the dashingly cash-strapped bachelor, Richard Follywit, in pursuit of quick cash and a good time, has to live on his wits… Sean Foley – whose previous hits include the Morecambe and Wise tribute The Play What I Wrote and the West End adaptation of The Ladykillers - turns his comedic brilliance to Middleton’s 1608 comedy. Acclaimed as a ‘whopping success’ (Independent), a cast of nineteen performs Sean Foley’s uproarious update which features a live 1950s-style band, and post-war setting yet remains true to the bawdy spirit of the Jacobean original.

FRIDAY 15 – SATURDAY 16 MAY

Richard Alston Dance Company

Proudly celebrating its twentieth year, Richard Alston Dance Company returns to the Arts Theatre with a knock-out new programme showcasing Alston’s superbly skilled choreography. Richard Alston’s brand new piece, Nomadic, connects Romanian gypsy music and electronic sound, exploring deeper the world of his hugely popular Gypsy Mixture. Burning, Martin Lawrance’s latest piece, is inspired by the Dante Sonata of Franz Liszt, played live onstage. It’s an intensely dramatic dance, immediately greeted with rapture by critics and audiences alike. Set to Britten’s masterpiece, Illuminations paints a vivid picture of the wild young genius Arthur Rimbaud. Britten and Alston combine to depict images from the turbulent life of the young poet, visionary and misfit in equal part.

MONDAY 18 - SATURDAY 23 MAY

Prior to a West End run, David Suchet will star as Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s much-loved masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest. Wilde’s superb satire on Victorian manners is one of the funniest plays in the English language - the delightful repartee and hilarious piercing of hypocrisy and pomposity can still make you laugh out loud. Two bachelor friends, the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff and the utterly reliable John Worthing J.P., lead double lives to court the attentions of the exquisitely desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The gallants must then grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions, and with the formidable Lady Bracknell. David Suchet is one of Britain’s most respected actors on both stage and screen. Best known for his title role in television’s Poirot, his most recent stage credits include Long Day’s Journey Into Night and All My Sons in the West End. Winner of an International Emmy award for his performance in BBC drama Maxwell, he has been nominated for numerous Olivier, Tony and BAFTA awards throughout his career, and was awarded the CBE in 2010. Directed by Adrian Noble, be the first to experience this major new production before it opens in the West End next summer.

Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building and customers who are unable to access the Theatre by other means must inform the Box Office at the time of booking or upon arrival. We have four house wheelchairs which we can provide for all performances. DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CUSTOMERS Please note that we no longer have an induction loop fitted around our auditorium as we have invested in a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system. This is designed to help customers, without hearing aids, and those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are able to provide, free of charge a limited number of Sennheiser headsets and Sennheiser personal induction loops, which are discreet and easy to use. If you have never used one before, we would strongly recommend coming to the Theatre, a few minutes early, to allow our Front of House staff adequate time to explain how they work. BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED CUSTOMERS We can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office, at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. BSL PERFORMANCES The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES Words will appear, as they are spoken, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES The describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance through the Sennheiser headsets. A pre-show touch tour is usually available (tickets are free but require booking). The tour may include set, costumes and props.

RP

RELAXED PERFORMANCES Relaxed performances are specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children. We offer reduced priced tickets for customers with disabilities and one companion. Please enquire at Box Office when booking. If you would like any advice or have any questions about our Sennheiser equipment, seating arrangements or would like to discuss our access provision please contact the Box Office in person, call 01223 503333 or email access@cambridgeartstheatre.com.
