welcome Welcome to our summer 2016 season. Many years ago, I used to work in New York and at lunchtimes I would stroll down to the Central Park boating lake. There, the proud makers of the most amazing model boats would lovingly place their creations in the lake and, with a final hopeful shove, send their little boats out across the water. I remember rooting for their boats to get to the other side without incident and marvelling at how much faith it must take to believe that luck would be with them. Every time we launch a new season it feels like our own final hopeful shove and sees the end of about six months spent crafting the programme, negotiating with producing companies for the best dates and deals for our Theatre and pulling together the best words and images for our brochure and website. I hope you like it as much as we do. The season contains something for everyone whether your tastes are for murder mysteries, classic drama, shows for young people of all ages, opera from the mainstream to the more challenging repertoire, a host of famous faces from Matthew Kelly to Helen George, a weekend jazz concert or just a cracking night out at the theatre. Although it only seems five minutes since we said goodbye to our wonderful Cinderella company, this brochure sees us launch our 2016/17 pantomime Dick Whittington and his Cat. Many of you, and particularly our huge schools audiences, have asked for a longer time to plan your

trip to the panto, but don’t wait too long as the performances around Christmas and New Year sold out in record time last year! An old friend of mine stopped me in our foyer recently and said how disappointed she was that she couldn’t get tickets for Martin Shaw in Hobson’s Choice and that she’d had to book tickets in Milton Keynes! As we get bigger and better shows and our audience and the city grows, it can be very difficult to get the tickets you want for many of our biggest productions. So, please book as early as you can, talk to our knowledgeable box office team if you are struggling to make your choices and keep hold of our brochure so you can refer to it whenever the theatre urge takes you. Just don’t blame me if you end up in Milton Keynes... Thank you, as ever, for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With kindest regards,

Another Sunday night shift. The smell of bread baking. The industrial thump, thump, thump of the machines that never stop. The ovens are cranked up to full blast, the factory is humming, and everyone wants to be somewhere else. But this shift is going to be different. Because when a crisis hits the factory, the men have more to lose than just their wages... From the writer of the international hit One Man, Two Guvnors, Richard Bean’s brilliantly observed drama stars the Olivier Award winning actor Matthew Kelly and Simon Greenall (Alan Partridge). HHHHH ‘Not to be missed’ WHATSONSTAGE

WITH

DUDLEY SUTTON (Tinker from Lovejoy) AS CANDY

Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place…with us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. Set in America during the Great Depression, this classic play tells the story of George and Lennie, two migrant farm workers, who go in search of new beginnings, in the hope of attaining their shared dream: of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land and building a home. After a long and exhausting journey, the pair arrive at a farm in California where they seek work. But they are no strangers to trouble and soon find themselves reeling from the fall out of an innocent misunderstanding which spirals out of control and leaves the two men, bound together by friendship, facing an earth-shattering climax.

NATIONA L TOUR

DIRECTED BY DANIEL BUCKROYD, DESIGNED BY JONATHAN FENSOM Clybourne Park is a razor-sharp satire that lifts the lid on race and real estate in a fictional Chicago neighbourhood.

‘Outrageously funny and provocative. A firecracker of a play’ DAILY TELEGRAPH

The swinging sixties are just around the corner as a black family move into a suburban white enclave, triggering all too predictable mutterings from the neighbours. Fifty years on, we return to the same house in 2009 as gentrification sets in and the roles are reversed.

MONDAY – SATURDAY, 7.45PM

One skillful ensemble of actors play two sets of characters in a play hailed as ‘shockingly entertaining’ and ‘appallingly funny’. Bruce Norris’ hilarious satire Clybourne Park took the West End by storm following a sold out run at the Royal Court Theatre in London.

HHHH ‘A joyous, playful and spirited production’ THE STAGE REVIEW

It’s 1871, and celebrated novelist Anthony Trollope is Australia-bound aboard the steamship Great Britain. Accompanied by his wife Rose and her maid Isabella, Trollope passes the time by writing his latest tale, Lady Anna. The story, full of intrigue, rebellion and social politics, proves divisive among his fellow passengers – and it’s not long before fact and fiction overlap. Is Trollope himself a surprising radical pitted against the status quo - or are his characters to blame for the controversy? An extraordinary set of circumstances finds both Lady Anna and Trollope facing some very difficult questions indeed – but will they follow their hearts and risk being disgraced? This play was first performed at the Park Theatre London in the summer of 2015, having been commissioned by the Trollope Society as part for the Anthony Trollope Bicentennial Celebrations.

SAMUEL WEST stars in

Directed by Stephen Unwin

PRIOR TO THE WEST END Actor, charmer and diva, Garry Essendine is determined to disregard his advancing years and receding hairline by revelling in endless tantrums and casual affairs. But just as he is about to depart for Africa, he finds himself besieged by a bevvy of would be seductresses, not to mention his longsuffering secretary, his estranged wife and an obsessed young playwright. As he attempts to disentangle himself from their clutches and demands, the humour escalates, accompanied by delicious dialogue and sparkling repartee. Often thought of as semi-autobiographical, Noël Coward’s Present Laughter is undoubtedly one of his funniest plays as he looks at life behind the theatrical curtain and reveals a world of glittering wits, dashing dressing gowns and ostentatious personalities. Samuel West’s film roles include Howards End, Notting Hill, Van Helsing and Hyde Park on Hudson. His television credits include Mr Selfridge, Waking the Dead, Cambridge Spies and Any Human Heart and he has portrayed both Richard II and Hamlet on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

THE CAMBRIDGE GREEK PLAY 2016 A DOUBLE BILL OF

by Sophocles

and

by Aristophanes DIRECTED BY HELEN EASTMAN MUSIC BY ALEX SILVERMAN DESIGNED BY NEIL IRISH LIGHTING DESIGN BY NEILL BRINKWORTH

PERFORMED IN THE ORIGINAL GREEK WITH ENGLISH SURTITLES The triennial Cambridge Greek Play returns to the Arts Theatre. After the success of 2010’s Agamemnon and 2013’s Prometheus/Frogs double bill, the same creative team return to Cambridge for another ground-breaking pairing of tragedy and comedy. The tradition of performing a play in Greek every three years at Cambridge University extends back to 1882, with alumni including Rupert Brooke, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Tom Hiddleston. This is a unique opportunity to hear the extraordinary language of these two great plays performed in the original Greek, with a newly commissioned orchestral score by composer Alex Silverman. The 2016 Cambridge Greek Play contrasts two very different women, who both ask for help to overturn the patriarchy. But while Antigone is left alone to bury her brother, Lysistrata persuades all of the women of Greece to join her strike. These rich and deeply resonant plays make for a moving, hilarious and thought-provoking night of theatre.
