welcome Welcome to our spring 2014 season and the first one in our splendid new building. After twenty-two weeks of pretty radical building work we finally took the hoardings down in mid November 2013 and what an amazing transformation it’s been. Our narrow, cramped corridor that passed for a foyer has been transformed into beautiful light-filled public spaces and bars with wonderful views of historic Cambridge. It is now possible to move enjoyably around the building, get a drink and relax in one of our three spacious bars before, during and after the show and to buy and pick up tickets from the Box Office without getting trampled! At long last, the quality of our front of house facilities matches the quality of the productions on our stage. The team that carried out the building work truly excelled themselves, proving to be supremely skilled craftsmen and technicians. The project was delivered on budget and to a quality standard higher than we had ever dared hope. Thank you to all involved. Our spring season showcases the rude health of British Theatre today. The National Theatre in its 50th year in partnership with Talawa Theatre Company will be bringing us the beautiful Moon on a Rainbow Shawl; for the first time in many years The Royal Shakespeare Company will be coming to the Arts with the phenomenal Ian McDiarmid in A Life of Galileo; Alistair McGowan stars in a new West End bound production of the evergreen Pygmalion; the team that brought us Anne Boleyn, to such great acclaim last year brings us Eternal Love, the unforgettable love story of Abelard and Heloise; our younger audience can choose from the classic Tom’s Midnight Garden, Jacqueline Wilson’s tale of the plucky Hetty Feather, Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful and the bed time classic We’re Going On a Bear Hunt and Cheek by Jowl are sure to thrill us again with their unforgettable ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore and their anarchic version of the French classic Ubu Roi. If you are struggling to make your choices from this cornucopia of theatrical delights don’t forget you can always call our friendly and knowledgeable box office team who will be happy to answer any of your questions about our season. As I write, our panto rehearsals are well underway. Robin Hood, Maid Marian and their band of Merry Men will soon be taking on the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and rescuing the Babes in the Wood. Many of our panto favourites are back including Matt Crosby as Nurse Nelly and Stephen Beckett as The Sheriff of Nottingham. They and the rest of our astonishingly talented cast will take you all on the best family adventure this Christmas. Come along and cheer them on. Thank you, as ever, for your support and for the many positive comments you have already made about our new foyer. More than ever, I am looking forward to seeing you all again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With kindest regards,

The Marlowe Society returns to Cambridge Arts Theatre, celebrating the 450th anniversary of Christopher Marlowe’s birth with a lavish new staging of the playwright’s most famous work, Doctor Faustus. From the splendour of the court of Emperor Charles V of Germany to the excesses of the Pope’s banquet in Rome, Faustus experiences all the earthly delights on offer in this world and beyond. But as he gets deeper and deeper in his time is running out… Doctor Faustus forms the centrepiece of a year-long festival of works celebrating the 450th anniversary of the playwright’s birth. PYGMALION By Bernard Shaw STARRING
ALISTAIR MCGOWAN AS HENRY HIGGINS WITH RULA LENSKA AND JAMIE FOREMAN
A major revival of one of the best loved plays of the 20th Century. Alistair McGowan leads an established company of actors in a 100th anniversary year production of Shaw’s enduring masterpiece directed by Tony Award-winning David Grindley. Pygmalion is perhaps best known as the inspiration for the musical My Fair Lady. The aristocratic and pompous Professor Henry Higgins (made famous by Rex Harrison) makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform the manners and speech of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and pass her off as a society lady. Packed with a host of larger than life characters including Alfred Doolittle and lovelorn Freddy Eynsford-Hill, Pygmalion remains one of Shaw’s most popular plays and a classic British drama; full of his trademark wit, style and humour. Bafta award-winning Alistair Mcgowan stars in this major new revival of Shaw’s enduring masterpiece. His prolific career as an impressionist, comic and writer also includes an Oliver Award-nominated performance for Little Shop Of Horrors. Rula Lenska joins Alistair to play Mrs Higgins and Jamie Foreman will play Alfred Doolittle. A LIFE OF GALILEO
by Bertolt Brecht
Translated by Mark Ravenhill In association with the Royal Shakespeare Company Directed by Roxana Silbert
STARRING
IAN MCDIARMID This thrilling production from the Royal Shakespeare Company received tremendous acclaim when it opened in Stratford-upon-Avon in Spring 2013. Now, one of the UK’s finest actors, Ian McDiarmid reprises his astonishing performance as Galileo, leading a huge ensemble cast in this theatrical tourde-force. The year is 1609 and a brilliant Italian scientist is about to make a discovery that will change the world. Observing the night sky using the recentlyinvented telescope, he sees the solar system with a clarity never before experienced by astronomers and realises that the earth orbits the sun. When Galileo’s opponents convince the Pope that these new findings pose a threat to religious dogma and may spark unrest and civil disobedience, he is denounced by the Inquisition as a heretic and forced to publicly denounce his theories… This much-acclaimed translation of Brecht’s masterpiece by RSC Writer in Residence Mark Ravenhill is directed by Roxana Silbert, Artistic Director of Brimingham Rep, who recently directed Dunsinane, Measure For Measure and Richard III for the RSC. Ian McDiarmid is perhaps best known for his iconic role as Emperor Palpatine in George Lucas’s epic Star Wars films. Other films include Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Gorky Park and Dragonslayer. Recent leading theatre roles include Timon of Athens for Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Emperor and Galilean for the National Theatre, John Gabriel Borkman for The Donmar Warehouse and Six Characters in Seach of an Author for the Chichester Festival Theatre.

DAVID ESSEX
When young Emmett was a high flyer in the City he was a regular customer in an upmarket restaurant but now, thanks to a recent reversal in his fortunes, he’s starting a new career there – as a dishwasher! His new colleagues are Dressler who’s happily been scraping and scrubbing for over 30 years and is a bit of a philosopher and Moss who’s sadly well past his sell by date and heading for the dustbin. Together they attack the endless supply of crockery that descends from above. In this world of dirty dishes, soapsuds and despair, playwright Morris Panych brings wit and humour to their quest for existential meaning. David Essex returns to the stage in The Dishwashers following his hugely successful portrayal of Eddie Moon in BBC TV’s EastEnders. He enjoys a remarkable career that has combined theatre, films, television and music. David’s stage work includes Peter Hall’s production of She Stoops to Conquer in the West End and his numerous musicals include Evita, Godspell, All The Fun of The Fair, Mutiny! and Aspects of Love.

TUESDAY 29 APRIL – SATURDAY 3 MAY HEADLONG, WEST YORKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE AND NUFFIELD, SOUTHAMPTON PRESENT
by Frank Wedekind in a new version by Anya Reiss Unnerving, entertaining, funny and dark, Wedekind’s definitive play about youth caused riots when it exploded onto the stage in 1906 and has lost none of its provocative power. Brought bang up to date by award-winning young playwright Anya Reiss and director Ben Kidd, this new version examines the exuberance, intensity and confusion of teenage life today. Spring Awakening asks important and pressing questions about how young people are shaped for their future by a generation that doesn’t understand them. Following their recent sell out productions of new plays Chimerica and The Effect, and their remarkable versions of 1984, The Seagull and Romeo and Juliet, Headlong breathe fresh life into another classic text, with co-producing partners West Yorkshire Playhouse and Nuffield, Southampton. Anya Reiss has won both the Evening Standard and the Critics’ Circle Awards for Most Promising Playwright.

THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE by Alan Ayckbourn DIRECTED BY LAURENCE BOSWELL
STARRING
NATALIE IMBRUGLIA
One of the world’s greatest stars; one of the world’s greatest playwrights and one of the greatest plays of the nineties - Things We Do For Love promises to be one of the theatrical highlights of the year.
‘It is sharp and it is gorgeously funny’
In South West London Barbara, elegant and glacial, lives in immaculate order on the middle floor of her converted house. Downstairs, lovelorn postman and part-time plumber Gilbert has created a shrine to his landlady. Upstairs, the flat is empty, a perfect bolthole for Nikki, Barbara’s old school-friend, and her fiancé Hamish. Unfortunately Hamish is everything that Barbara despises (bearded, Scottish and vegetarian) and Hamish takes an instant dislike to the ever-intolerant Barbara - a hostility which hides deeper feelings. This bedroom farce soon develops into something more complex as the two adversaries fall head over heels in lust. This is the UK’s greatest living playwright at the peak of his art, making hilarity and ingenuity from the things we do for love.

Musically charming and dreamlike, this cross between an opera and a musical re-creates the great myth of the American frontier – peopled by a giant, singing geese and cats, dancing Swedes, lumberjacks, and good and bad cooks. The score is brilliantly inventive, mixing elements of blues, folk songs and hymns in a witty and irreverent response to the American Dream. UBU ROI
By Alfred Jarry
In French with English surtitles.
Following its European tour and a sell-out London run in 2013, Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod return with their ‘crack ensemble’ (THE GUARDIAN) of French actors in their production of Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi. Charting the exploits of the despotic Ubu, the play stands as a startling challenge to the comfortable and conventional. Menacing, hilarious and anarchic, Ubu Roi’s piercing humour continues to fascinate us, enabling a world of rich theatrical possibility in a parade of the grotesque that keeps pace with our own times. Cheek by Jowl has established an international reputation for bringing ‘fresh life to the classics using intense, vivid performances like a laser of light to set the text ablaze’ (THE GUARDIAN).
