welcome Welcome to our Autumn 2019 Season. I love the fact that many of our Patrons have been visiting our Theatre for years. Some of our most loyal supporters can remember the opening of our Theatre in 1936! A key part of my role is to ensure that we nurture and grow their love of the theatre in general, and this Theatre in particular, and to honour the astonishing history of our Institution. The best way we can do this is to continue to produce and present theatre of the highest calibre but it is also vital that we learn from, and celebrate, our rich and diverse theatrical heritage. We are very grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, who have awarded us a sizeable grant to help us record and preserve our history. We will be cataloguing our extensive archive which contains costumes, programmes, posters, set designs and much more besides. We will be training local volunteers to record oral histories from our supporters, old and young, to build a living archive of theatrical memories. Our collection will be available to view and we will be able to produce educational resources to inspire and inform school children in advance of them coming to see one of our productions. Permanent and temporary exhibitions within the Theatre will enable us to display the most cherished reminders of our heritage. Our history is important to us but it only matters if it inspires us to go to theatre anew, now and in the future. This season highlights our sustained efforts to inspire the next generation of theatregoers. Emma Rice’s new company Wise Children return with a musical adaptation of Enid Blyton’s classic Malory Towers. Oedipus at Colonus continues the tradition of the University Greek play which we are proud to present every three years. Astonishingly, despite being performed in Ancient Greek, it will attract students and school children from across the country and will play to sell out audiences. The Woman in Black returns to us once again and given the fact that it is both terrifying and on many school syllabi we are expecting coachloads of screaming school children! Dance students can choose to see the wildly popular BalletBoyz in their double bill Them/Us or to see the final performances of the wonderful Richard Alston Dance Company. A-level literature students will be able to look jealousy and revenge in the eye in our new production of Shakespeare’s Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. Othello or consider the meaning of coming of age in the breathtaking new production of Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones. The season finishes with the Olivier Awardwinning West End production of A Monster Calls which is a stunning theatrical adaptation of a wonderful novel. We are expecting huge numbers of school children to experience this devastating but uplifting tale about a young boy finding timeless wisdom as he faces tragic events at home. Truly, a must see. Finally, for the biggest production in our year, Cinderella, we are expecting to see around 10,000 school children, partly funded by our own in-house charity Panto Wheels, and another 12,000 children to be brought by their families. Panto is the greatest single recruiting sergeant for a lifetime of theatregoing. With our traditional in-house panto featuring laugh-out-loud comedy moments, dazzling song and dance numbers and the classic rags to riches tale of Cinderella, we are hoping to inspire a lifetime of theatregoing for thousands of Cambridgeshire youngsters. We are hugely blessed to have this wonderful Institution in our City. Those of us that work here feel very honoured to be able to look after our theatrical heritage and to hopefully continue to build new supporters for many years to come. We could not do it without your steadfast support so thank you, as ever, and I hope that I will see you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With my best wishes

panto babe auditions
First Round: Sunday 22 September. Call backs: Sunday 29 September. Are you aged 9 – 13 years? Do you have a passion for performing? Have you got what it takes to perform on stage at Cambridge Arts Theatre this Christmas? We are looking for a group of 20 talented boys and girls between the ages of 9 – 13 years to join the cast of Cinderella as panto babes.
We will be holding an informal and fun audition workshop on Sunday 22 September. Not only will you have the chance to showcase your dancing and singing skills in front of a panel of theatre professionals, you’ll learn some great dance routines and make new friends! Panto Wheels is a charitable project, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd, to help children from disadvantaged areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel and/or tickets. For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts. Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. In our 2018/19 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped over 4,300 children from 25 schools and groups experience the magic of Aladdin. We are proud to reach out to the local community, helping children from a range of backgrounds and with diverse needs. This year, with your support we can increase our reach and make sure that even more children enjoy the special shared experience of live theatre at Christmas.

BOOKING FEE
All tickets for the Arts Theatre include a £3 per-ticket booking fee. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre. Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By charging a booking fee we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity.
REFUNDS & EXCHANGES
Tickets are not refundable unless a performance is cancelled. Exchanges and resales may be made under certain conditions; please contact the Box Office for details of our policy.
DISCOUNTS
Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to most performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for over 65s, students, groups and schools. Please note there are no discounts on the lowest price seats and only one discount applies and all discounts are subject to availability. Please check with the Box Office at time of booking for available discounts.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOUR VISIT The safety and security of our patrons is of the utmost importance to us. Please take note of the below information regarding our bag policy. In the interest of customer safety the following items cannot be taken into the auditorium and must be stored in our cloakroom: Rucksacks or backpacks of any size, children’s rucksacks, handbags that can be worn as backpacks, handbags larger than 25cm x 35cm, shopping bags and large items such as holdalls and suitcases. We strongly urge you to leave all bags at home or in your car, where it is practical. If you bring them to the Theatre you will be asked to check them in to the cloakroom which is situated on the first floor past the Stalls Bar (Peas Hill entrance). Customers with access needs who wish to check in bags should make themselves known to the Duty Manager. Please allow sufficient time to travel to the Theatre and to allow for the additional delays this may cause. We recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the performance. 42

The Arts Theatre aims to care for every patron as an individual, on a one to one basis. There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 on Wheeler Street; 7 on King’s Parade and 36 in the Grand Arcade car park. If you have mobility requirements, please advise the Box Office when booking tickets so we are able to allocate you the correct space. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building. We have five house wheelchairs (including one electric) available for use during all performances, subject to availability. We have a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system, designed to help DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING patrons both without hearing aids, and for those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are also able to provide headsets and personal induction loops. If you have never used one before, we recommend arriving at the Theatre early so that our Front of House staff can explain how they work. Some of our performances are BSL INTERPRETED. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children. Details of accessible performances are highlighted on Page 2 and on the relevant show pages.
