welcome Welcome to our spring/ summer 2017 season and what is my 40th season for the Theatre. When I sit down to write my welcome in the face of a looming print deadline, the feelings never change. Last minute doubts as to whether you, our ever loyal and discerning audience, will like the season. Money worries as I hope that we will sell sufficient tickets to keep our charity afloat. But when my mind settles, I feel pride, and not a little relief, that our Theatre continues to be able to attract the very best productions that are available. This means that we can offer a sufficiently varied programme to satisfy the theatre-going hopes of all of our, often very, different audience groups. If theatre for you is an entertaining night out and a diversion from your everyday concerns then the evergreen Annie, The Full Monty, the wonderful Nell Gwynn from Shakepeare’s Globe Theatre or Mike Leigh’s classic Abigail’s Party will be for you. If you want a new take on the classics, Cheek by Jowl’s The Winter’s Tale, the Marlowe Society’s Edward II or Tim Piggott-Smith in Death of a Salesman should fit the bill. If you want new writing and some real challenge to your world view you need to see Caryl Churchill’s incredible Escaped Alone prior to its Broadway run or The National Theatre’s My Country as it comments on the real views of post-Brexit Britain. Perhaps you just want a really good laugh. The theatrical phenomenon The Play That Goes Wrong will hit the spot, Alan Ayckbourn’s classic Henceforward... will remind us what a great playwright he is, there should be a car crash of classes in the hilarious Invincible, Sandi Toksvig’s new comedy Silver Lining promises to lift our spirits and remind us of the resilience of our elders as will James Bolam and Anne Reid in the hilarious Fracked! as a “stubborn old biddy” takes on the might of the energy companies. If horror or a decent murder mystery is your thing, Kara Tointon in Gaslight or Peter James’ Not Dead Enough will fit the bill nicely.

Our opera lovers are well served with Puccini’s Tosca and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience from the brilliant English Touring Opera and we are delighted to welcome back the Richard Alston Dance Company. Our younger audience members (5+) will be thrilled by the new musical version of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox. For something that defies convention I cannot recommend our new co-production highly enough. La Strada is a musical adaptation of the classic Fellini film directed and devised by one of the most exciting talents in theatre today, Sally Cookson. I am very proud that we will be presenting it prior to its West End run. Our annual panto extravaganza Dick Whittington and his Cat opens on 1 December and will fill the Theatre with families, school children and office parties over the festive period. Paul Nicholas will make his Cambridge panto debut as the evil King Rat and Matt Crosby makes a very welcome return as the irrepressible Sarah the Cook. Come along and join in the fun. Thank you as ever for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With kindest regards,

‘Cheek by Jowl brings fresh life to the classics using intense vivid performances like a laser of light to set the text ablaze’ THE GUARDIAN
TUESDAY – FRIDAY, 7.45PM SATURDAY, 2.30PM AND 8PM:
One of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, The Winter’s Tale, though written at the same period as The Tempest, smashes all the rules that The Tempest follows. Unity of time, place and action are hurled aside as we range across Europe, from court to country, from high tragedy to low comedy, across a time span of sixteen years.
14
The Winter’s Tale tells of a delusional and paranoid king who tears his family apart. But this is the new Shakespeare, after he completed his great tragedies, and the tough struggle for redemption yields flickers of hope. Initial darkness gives way to joy as Time leads the characters to a shattering conclusion...

WEDNESDAY 8 – SATURDAY 11 FEBRUARY THE MARLOWE SOCIETY PRESENT
EDWARD II By Christopher Marlowe
‘All live to die, and rise to fall’
Son to an impressive father, husband to a passionate queen, King Edward II struggles to find his own voice amidst the clamour of stronger personalities in the English court. Despite the disapproval of his nobles, he finds consolation in his relationship with the low-born Piers Gaveston, often choosing his pleasures with Gaveston over the responsibilities of his position. When his queen and nobles unite against Gaveston, Edward must decide how far he is willing to go to assert his own will in the face of hostile resistance.
WEDNESDAY – SATURDAY, 7.45PM AND SATURDAY, 2.30PM: £18/£23/£28 THURSDAY, 2.30PM: £18/£23 ALL TICKET PRICES INCLUDE A £3 PER-TICKET BOOKING FEE
In Edward II, Christopher Marlowe masterfully depicts the conflict between personal and political, in which duty wars with desire and even a king’s wishes must yield to the demands of state. Christopher Marlowe’s gripping drama of deceit and responsibility is brought vividly to life by the Marlowe Society, Cambridge University’s leading drama society. The Marlowe return to Cambridge Arts Theatre after their recent acclaimed productions of Measure for Measure and Dr Faustus; it has been responsible for launching the careers of some of Britain’s greatest actors including Ian McKellen, Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and Derek Jacobi.

PATRICK HAMILTON
‘A SUPERBLY GRIPPING PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER’ THE DAILY TELEGRAPH One of the greatest thrillers of all time comes to Cambridge, starring the highly acclaimed stage and television actress Kara Tointon. Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight is a masterpiece of suspenseful playwriting that will have you on the edge of your seat. While Jack Manningham is out on the town each evening, his wife Bella is home alone. She can’t explain the disappearance of familiar objects, the mysterious footsteps overhead or the ghostly flickering of the living room gaslight – is she losing her mind? Does the terror exist in her imagination or are dark secrets living in her home? The arrival of a retired detective leads to a shocking discovery that will shake her respectable Victorian marriage to its core. Kara Tointon has received universal critical acclaim for her West End performance of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, further stage credits include the West End revivals of Alan Ayckbourn’s Absent Friends and Relatively Speaking. Her television credits include winning the 2013 series of Strictly Come Dancing, Mr Selfridge and The Sound of Music Live! Casting includes Rupert Young who is best known for portraying Sir Leon in the BBC drama series Merlin and Keith Allen, direct from the highly acclaimed West End production of Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming. In the tradition of heavyweight thrillers from Hitchcock, Christie or Priestley, Gaslight is a genre-defining, sensationally elegant masterpiece. A definitive seat-gripping drama which is not to be missed and a tense, hugely satisfying evening of great British theatre.

Martin Lawrance’s Tangent. Photo by Chris Nash
Richard Alston Dance Company return to the Arts Theatre with a knock-out programme of superbly skilled choreography to music from all over the world.
18
In his brand-new Tangent, Martin Lawrance explores the vivid accents and attack of Tango. Four couples, intertwined but shifting and subtly syncopating, glide through the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Tango master Piazzolla, played live by Jason Ridgway on piano. Alston’s Isthmus Remix and Holderlin Fragments explore contrasting pieces of music by Japanese composer Jo Kondo and Benjamin Britten respectively. The closing piece Nomadic mixes Asian-influenced traditional Romany singing with the toughness of an urban beat. To explore the interaction between gypsy music and urban sound, Alston has collaborated with hip-hop choreographer Ajani Johnson-Goffe.

Charles II has cast off London’s drab, puritanical past with a love of all things loud, French and sexy. A young Nell Gwynn is selling oranges for sixpence in London’s burgeoning West End theatre scene. Little does she know who is in the audience one fateful night.

La Strada ‘The Road’, a metaphor for life, is a deeply impassioned tale of love and loss, set against the backdrop of a country still reeling from the devastating effects of the Second World War. We journey into the heart of the Italian countryside where Gelsomina, full of the innocent spirit of youth, is bought by Zampanò, a travelling street performer, to join his cheap ‘strong man’ act. When the mismatched pair stumble across a ragtag circus and a daredevil tight-rope walker, Gelsomina finds herself caught between the two men, not knowing which way to turn… Frederico Fellini’s Oscar-winning La Strada is one of the all-time masterpieces of world cinema. This musical adaptation is directed by Olivier Award nominee Sally Cookson (Jane Eyre & Peter Pan National Theatre, Hetty Feather West End) and boasts a beautiful new score by Benji Bower with songs performed by an international cast of actor musicians. Moving between the dazzling lights of the circus and the bare landscapes of rural Italy, this production of La Strada promises to be a theatrical feast for all the senses.

Abigail’s Party BY MIKE LEIGH ‘Brilliantly cringe-making’ MAIL ON SUNDAY
‘Pricelessly funny and painfully accurate’ TIME OUT
40TH ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION: PRIOR TO WEST END It’s been forty years since the appalling Beverly first put Donna Summer on the turntable, stacked a plate with little cheese and pineapple sticks, plied her guests with alcohol, cigarettes and Demis Roussos and slow-danced her way across the shag-pile into theatrical history. The drinks party from hell begins when Beverly and her estate agent husband Laurence invite round their new neighbours, Tony and Ange, along with the nervous divorcee Sue, who is jittery about the bash her teenage daughter Abigail is throwing down the road. As that party gets out of hand, this one too descends into chaos, and comedy, drama and tragedy combine into an iconic piece of theatre. Hilarious and horribly compelling, Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party is an undisputed classic. Amanda Abbington is best-known for playing Mary Morstan in Sherlock, Miss Mardle in Mr Selfridge and DS Jo Moffat in Cuffs.

Director Sarah Esdaile’s productions include Talking Heads for Theatre Royal Bath Productions and Death of a Salesman, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Deep Blue Sea for West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Deerland Energy’s plans to drill for shale gas in the pretty village of Fenstock are going well. The company is looking at big profits, they can count on the support of university departments funded by the energy companies, and Councillor Pilbeam, Chair of the Planning Committee, seems to be open to lucrative offers. The only slight snag is a ragged band of protestors, reluctantly led by retired academic, Elizabeth Blackwood. Surely she’s just another ‘mad old biddy’, as she’s characterised by ruthless PR guru Joe Selby? This new razor-sharp black comedy by Alistair Beaton takes a timely look at the conflicted core of planetary energy and earthly power. A much-praised political satirist, Beaton’s television work includes the BAFTA-nominated The Trial of Tony Blair and Spitting Image, and plays such as his revised version of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui.

MONDAY 12 - SATURDAY 17 JUNE A NATIONAL THEATRE PRODUCTION
MY COUNTRY; A WORK IN PROGRESS in the words of people across the UK and Carol Ann Duffy In the days after the EU referendum, the National Theatre began a nationwide listening project. A team of interviewers spoke to people around the country – from Leicester to Londonderry and Merthyr Tydfil to Glasgow – to hear their views of the country and town they live in, their lives, their future, and the referendum. Using exact words taken from the interviews, My Country puts those conversations centre stage. Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre, collaborates with Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, to create this new production which opens in London before playing at venues around the country. Created in collaboration with eight UK arts organisations in association with Cusack Projects Limited.
