welcome Welcome to our spring 2018 season. From our home “grown” panto Jack and the Beanstalk to the high stakes drama of the Elizabethan era in the wonderful Mary Stuart, I hope the season has something for all our audience members, young and old. Whether it is the the wide-eyed three-year-old cheering on Jack Trott or the veteran theatre cognoscenti awaiting the result of the coin toss to see who plays Elizabeth I or Mary Queen of Scots, our Theatre is there to feed everyone’s theatrical appetites. David Haig makes a welcome return in Pressure, telling the true story of Group Captain Stagg, the Scottish meteorologist tasked with advising General Eishenhower if weather conditions will permit the launch of Operation Overlord in June 1944. This House illuminates the murky dealings of the Whips’ offices in the heat of parliamentary battle in the 1974 hung parliament. Art, with its stellar cast of Nigel Havers, Denis Lawson and Stephen Tompkinson, is one of the great modern theatrical comedies, challenging our deepest preconceptions of the nature of art and the meaning of friendship. Filter’s riotous reinvention of A Midsummer Night’s Dream preserves the essential beauty of Shakespeare’s masterpiece whilst making the play accessible to a younger audience. Phil Daniels is sure to scare all comers witless in the classic Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson’s gothic horror thriller. We have decided to invest in two significant improvements to our Theatre over the coming months. We are replacing our ageing lift which is now 21 years old and increasingly unreliable. Our new lift will take 10 weeks to install and means that from mid January 2018 to the end of March 2018 there will be no lift access to the upper floors of our building. If you have any mobility issues, please contact our Box Office and they will advise you where best to sit when you visit the Theatre during this period. We will still have step free access from “street to seat” to the Stalls in our auditorium and we have disabled toilets and bar facilities on the ground floor, meaning wheelchair users can access the building. Patrons with limited mobility should be aware that whilst the lift is out of action, the Circle, as well as the Circle and Maynard Bars, will only be accessible via stairs until we complete the project. We have also made the momentous decision to replace our current Box Office system. This will streamline the booking process and will optimise the online booking experience on computers, tablets and mobile devices, enabling easier navigation between our recently revamped website and the new booking system. Online sales will not be available between the 1st and the 9th January 2018 and there may be an interrupted or slower than usual Box Office service as we make the upgrade. If you have any questions or are struggling to get through please email us on boxoffice@cambridgeartstheatre.com and the Box Office team will be happy to assist. Please bear with us whilst we implement these improvements and don’t hesitate to get in touch with our Box Office if you need any advice on making your visit to our Theatre as enjoyable as possible. We will update our website and social media channels with information on both of these projects in due course; please don’t be put off buying tickets for our shows whilst we make these improvements, as we need your support more than ever. Our much-loved panto is a home-grown Cambridge institution and I hope we will see you and your family this year for some outrageous festive fun. The singing legend Tony Christie will be leading us all the way back to Amarillo and our everpopular Dame, Matt Crosby will be bringing us his Dame Trott and some appalling jokes! With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, Sweeney Todd is a tasty theatrical treat that has shocked, awed and thrilled audiences around the world. It tells the tale of Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, who returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. Todd’s bloody revenge becomes a dish served hot by Mrs Lovett, the entrepreneurial and lovestruck proprietress of a pie shop, to queues of hungry Londoners who begin finding her wares very delectable indeed. And the carnage has only just begun! Directed by Chris Cuming, with musical direction by James Harvey, CaOS’ production of Sweeney Todd follows their well-received 2017 production of Annie and the company’s NODA Award-winning Sister Act. The Marlowe Society, Cambridge University’s leading drama society, returns to Cambridge Arts Theatre after their recent acclaimed productions of Edward II, Measure for Measure and Doctor Faustus. It has been responsible for launching the careers of some of Britain’s greatest actors including Sir Ian McKellen, Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and Sir Derek Jacobi. Tom Littler directed Measure for Measure at the Cambridge Arts Theatre in 2016. Formerly Associate Director of the Peter Hall Company, he is now Artistic Director of Jermyn Street Theatre.

All tickets for the Arts Theatre include a £3 per-ticket booking fee. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre. Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By charging a booking fee we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity. Tickets are not refundable unless a performance is cancelled. Exchanges and resales may be made under certain conditions; please contact the Box Office for details of our policy.

Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to most performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for over 65’s, groups and schools. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOUR VISIT The safety and security of our patrons is of the utmost importance to us. Please take note of the below information regarding our bag policy. In the interest of customer safety we do not allow all rucksacks and backpacks (including children’s rucksacks), holdalls, shopping bags or bags larger than 35cm x 25cm into the auditorium. We strongly urge you to leave all bags at home or in your car, where it is practical. If you bring them to the Theatre you will be asked to check them in to the Cloakroom which is situated on the first floor past the Stalls Bar (Peas Hill entrance). Customers with access needs who wish to check in bags should make themselves known to the Duty Manager.

Please allow sufficient time to travel to the Theatre and to allow for the additional delays this may cause. We recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

The Arts Theatre aims to care for every patron as an individual, on a one to one basis. There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 on Wheeler Street; 7 on King’s Parade and 36 in the Grand Arcade car park. If you have mobility requirements, please advise the Box Office when booking tickets so we are able to allocate you the correct space. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building. We have five house wheelchairs (including one electric) available for use during all performances subject to availability. We have a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system, designed to help DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING patrons both without hearing aids, and for those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are also able to provide headsets and personal induction loops. If you have never used one before, we recommend arriving at the Theatre early so that our Front of House staff can explain how they work. Some of our performances are BSL INTERPRETED. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.

We will be undertaking essential maintenance on our Lift and will be installing a new system in early 2018. Our stalls remain step-free from street to seat however the circle seating, along with the Circle Bar and Maynard Bar, will only be accessible by stairs for approximately 10 weeks from 8 January 2018 whilst we complete the project.
