welcome Welcome to our summer/ autumn 2015 season. As we approach the 80th anniversary of our opening I often wonder what our founder, John Maynard Keynes, would make of what we have achieved. Our summer season is a showcase for the very best that the performing arts can offer: from David Suchet to Donizetti, Room on the Broom to An Inspector Calls, we are proud to present a programme that offers something thrilling for everyone. Our building is in better shape than it has ever been, though we still face enormous challenges to keep the Theatre working. Shoehorned into the centre of a residential and commercial block, spread over eight floors and welcoming around 150,000 customers each year, simply staying open is a major achievement. We have built an audience that is amongst the most loyal in the country and that is regarded as a real arbiter of the quality and likely future life of a production. Keynes would be proud of his creation and delighted by how much pleasure it continues to bring to Cambridgeshire residents. Over recent months we have had to think very carefully about how we can continue with the work we do as an independent theatrical charity. We are committed to providing subsidised schools’ tickets, workshops, pre and post show discussions and industry-leading special needs provisions that complement and enhance our world-class and inclusive programme. For the first time in our history we face the coming year without any public subsidy; costs from rent to repairs continue their inexorable rise and we are determined to hold down our ticket prices as much as we can. We are not a commercial theatre and don’t want to have to behave like one. It is therefore essential that over the coming years we continue to increase our income from sources other than direct ticket sales. We will be making much greater efforts

Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. Registered in England No. 03536370 Registered Charity No. 1069912. Registered Office: 6 St Edward’s Passage, Cambridge CB2 3PJ VAT Registration No. 213 2677 84

to persuade our customers to buy a drink or programme, introducing a tempting food offer and trying to make the maximum possible use of all our spaces. We will be increasing our fundraising efforts to try to obtain funds from supportive individuals, trusts and companies. As part of this drive, sadly, we have had to increase our booking fees by 50p per ticket from the 30th March 2015. We realise that booking fees are seen by some as synonymous with sharp practice and hidden charges; it is, however, now a common and transparent practice across cultural charities as an effective way of raising vital additional funds. If we had to raise the extra 50p per ticket through headline ticket prices, after accounting for the production companies share, royalties, VAT and credit card commissions, we would need to raise ticket prices by an average of £2.50 per ticket. I do hope you can all find something in this programme that will remind you just why we have been able to survive for 80 years and equally why it is important that we all work together to make sure that we will be here for future generations of Cambridgeshire residents. Thank you as ever for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With kindest regards,

THE OLIVIER AWARD WINNING COMEDY

LAST CHANCE TO BOOK

BY TOM STOPPARD DIRECTED BY BLANCHE MCINTYRE

!!!! ‘Tom Stoppard’s wonderwork, made for English Touring Theatre, comes whisperingly close to perfection’ THE SUNDAY TIMES

‘Tom Stoppard’s dazzling drama is crammed with so many towering ideas that it induces thrilling intellectual vertigo’

‘One of the most exquisite plays of the 20th century’

THE TIMES

First premiered at the National Theatre, Tom Stoppard’s undisputed masterpiece, Arcadia, is an exciting new collaboration between Theatre Royal Brighton Productions and English Touring Theatre. In a stately home in 19th Century rural Derbyshire, secret desires and professional rivalries take hold of the residents of Sidley Park as Thomasina, a talented pupil, makes a startling discovery well ahead of her time, whilst in the present day academics Hannah and Bernard attempt to piece together the fragments of truth that tell her story. One of the greatest plays of the last century, the Olivier Awardwinning Arcadia explores the delicate relationship between past and present, blending history with actuality as the focus drifts from 1809 to now, and back again. Arcadia was recently voted one of the Nation’s Top Five plays in English Touring Theatre’s ‘My Favourite Play’ poll.

London’s Soho, 1956. Here, glamour rubs up against filth, and it likes it! The posh mix with musicians, whores and racketeers; virginity is ‘no city trade’, and the dashingly cash-strapped bachelor, Richard Follywit, in pursuit of quick cash and a good time, has to live on his wits… Sean Foley – whose previous hits include the Morecambe and Wise tribute The Play What I Wrote and the West End adaptation of The Ladykillers - turns his comedic brilliance to Middleton’s 1608 comedy. Acclaimed as a ‘whopping success’ (Independent), a cast of nineteen performs Sean Foley’s uproarious update which features a live 1950s-style band, and post-war setting yet remains true to the bawdy spirit of the Jacobean original.

A BRAND NEW COMEDY BASED ON THE SUNDAY TIMES HUMOUR BOOK OF THE YEAR

“VERY VERY FUNNY” JAMES FOX

sunday times

JACK FOX PRIOR TO WEST END

BY ROGER MORTIMER AND CHARLIE MORTIMER ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY MICHAEL SIMKINS

“We went to a very good midday party at the Herns yesterday where there was a lot to drink and your dear mother took advantage of that fact... A former jockey called Stan Clayton, who breeds budgerigars, was good enough to tell me all about his blood pressure, while a tall lady with an azure wig explained at some length why she loathed her husband so much. Perhaps I am a sympathetic listener; possibly I just lack the energy to move away.”

Adapted by celebrated writer and journalist, Michael Simkins (Fatty Batter, Simkins’s World), this endearing new comedy reveals fresh, undocumented stories of Charlie’s life and his relationship with his father. Two times BAFTA Award winner James Fox, whose extensive film and TV appearances include A Passage To India, Patriot Games, The Remains of the Day and Downton Abbey, stars as Roger Mortimer.

Richard Alston Dance Company

Proudly celebrating its twentieth year, Richard Alston Dance Company returns to the Arts Theatre with a knock-out new programme showcasing Alston’s superbly skilled choreography. Richard Alston’s brand new piece, Nomadic, connects Romanian gypsy music and electronic sound, exploring deeper the world of his hugely popular Gypsy Mixture. Burning, Martin Lawrence’s latest piece, is inspired by the Dante Sonata of Franz Liszt, played live on stage. It’s an intensely dramatic dance, immediately greeted with rapture by critics and audiences alike. Set to Britten’s masterpiece, Illuminations paints a vivid picture of the wild young genius Arthur Rimbaud. Britten and Alston combine to depict images from the turbulent life of the young poet, visionary and misfit in equal part.

Prior to a West End run, David Suchet will star as Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s much-loved masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest.

WITH MICHELE DOTRICE AND RICHARD O’CALLAGHAN

Wilde’s superb satire on Victorian manners is one of the funniest plays in the English language - the delightful repartee and hilarious piercing of hypocrisy and pomposity can still make you laugh out loud. Two bachelor friends, the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff and the utterly reliable John Worthing J.P., lead double lives to court the attentions of the exquisitely desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The gallants must then grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions, and with the formidable Lady Bracknell. David Suchet is one of Britain’s most respected actors on both stage and screen. Best known for his title role in television’s Poirot, his most recent stage credits include Long Day’s Journey Into Night and All My Sons in the West End. Winner of an International Emmy award for his performance in BBC drama Maxwell, he has been nominated for numerous Olivier, Tony and BAFTA awards throughout his career, and was awarded the CBE in 2010. Directed by Adrian Noble, be the first to experience this major new production before it opens in the West End this summer.

ENGLISH TOURING OPERA OLIVIER AWARD WINNER 2014 – OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN OPERA

LA BOHÈME BY PUCCINI

THURSDAY 28 – SATURDAY 30 MAY, 7.30PM

Paris, 1840. On a snowy Christmas Eve, a starry-eyed poet meets a poor dressmaker over candlelight, and instantly falls in love. At first the good times roll. But will their happiness last, or does the bohemian lifestyle come at a price? English Touring Opera tells this most romantic of stories as it was meant to be told, with elegant period costumes and designs inspired by the Paris of the time. With some of the most memorable music in opera, a night at La bohème will lift every spirit and break every heart.

THE WILD MAN OF THE WEST INDIES BY DONIZETTI

WEDNESDAY 27 MAY, 7.30PM

ETO gives the modern UK premiere of this long-lost Donizetti opera, The Wild Man of the West Indies. The story of Cardenio, a wealthy man driven “wild” when he discovers his wife’s infidelity, is based on Cervantes and Shakespeare, but set on a Caribbean island in colonial times. A very rare treat with echoes of The Tempest, it’s not to be missed.

THE SIEGE OF CALAIS BY DONIZETTI

TUESDAY 26 MAY, 7.30PM

The invaders are at the gates and their king is demanding six victims in exchange for sparing the city from destruction. But will the people of Calais agree to the sacrifice? With echoes of Les Misérables, The Siege of Calais is a stirring tale of heroism in the face of defeat, and one of ETO’s most widelyacclaimed productions. Proud, fierce, exhilarating – this is history on stage, in thrilling music. All operas are sung in Italian, with English surtitles.

“The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.” Vivie Warren, a young Cambridge graduate is horrified to learn that her education and entire luxurious life-style has been financed by her mother’s career in the world’s oldest profession. Due to its frank portrayal of Mrs Warren’s Profession, this groundbreaking play was originally banned in England by the Lord Chamberlain. Written in 1894, it was not allowed a public performance for the next thirty years and during its first performance in New York, the police stopped the play and arrested the cast! MONDAY 17 – SATURDAY 22 AUGUST THEATRE ROYAL BATH PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS

BY ALAN BENNETT

30

DIRECTED BY SARAH ESDAILE

STARRING

STEPHANIE COLE Alan Bennett sealed his reputation as the master of observation and brilliant comic phrasing with this series of ground-breaking monologues, originally filmed for television. This is a rare opportunity to see three of the original Talking Heads, at once darkly comic, poignant and uplifting and widely regarded as modern classics.

A CREAM CRACKER UNDER THE SETTEE

Stephanie Cole stars as 75 year-old widow Doris, obsessive about tidiness and maintaining her independence. Prostate on the floor after a fall, she spies a cream cracker under the settee, which she determines to use as evidence against her incompetent home help. The original production was nominated for three BAFTA awards.

A CHIP IN THE SUGAR

Graham Whittaker is a devoted son whose life begins to unravel when he discovers his aging mother has taken up with an old flame. Alan Bennett himself played Graham in the original production in 1988.

A LADY OF LETTERS

The acerbic Miss Ruddock watches the world from behind her curtains and constantly dashes off letters expressing her ill-informed opinions, one of which pushes her to the brink with unexpected but liberating consequences. Stephanie Cole is one of the UK’s best-loved actresses, the winner of the Best TV Actress at the 1992 British Comedy Awards for Waiting For God and the Best Comedy Performance at the 2012 British Soap Awards for Coronation Street. She starred in the first series of Talking Heads in 1988. Other recent credits include Doc Martin and Still Open All Hours. Her numerous stage roles include A Passionate Woman and The Rivals. Multi award-winning Alan Bennett is one of the UK’s best-loved playwrights. His work includes The Madness of George III, The History Boys, Enjoy, and The Habit of Art. Panto Wheels Panto Wheels is a scheme, set up by Cambridge Arts Theatre, to help children from culturally and socially deprived areas attend the Christmas pantomime by subsidising the cost of travel and tickets, which can prove prohibitive. For many this is their first experience of theatre and, as pantomime is bright, engaging and fun, it gives a solid foundation for children to develop a relationship with the arts. Engagement with the arts can help children improve their core foundation skills by building confidence and widening perspectives. Many schools also use the pantomime story to inform teaching and learning across the curriculum, helping children encounter subjects, such as Science and Mathematics, in exciting contexts. In our 2014/15 pantomime season the Panto Wheels project helped 2500 children from 14 schools come and experience the magic of Aladdin. To make a donation to help even more children attend the pantomime this year, please contact Victoria Willingale on 01223 578912 or email vwillingale@cambridgeartstheatre.com
