welcome Welcome to our summer 2017 season. As a charity our aim is to inspire and nurture a lifelong love of the performing arts and to secure the future of our Theatre for future generations. It’s an ongoing challenge to make the books balance and it’s only possible thanks to the loyalty of our audience and the generosity of the many supporters who donate to help us with our work. Our Trustees make sure we always act in the long-term interests of our Theatre and, if we make a surplus in any given year, that we invest it wisely for the future benefit of our charity. First and foremost our seasons need to sell sufficient tickets to pay our bills. They should entertain and cater to all our audiences, from veteran theatregoers to overexcited two-year-olds making their first trip to the Theatre. They should inspire people to come back to our Theatre year after year and encourage them to get involved with our charity by volunteering or becoming a member of our Supporters’ Circle. This season we have been able to do our charity proud. Seasoned theatregoers will relish our new co-production of Fellini’s masterpiece La Strada, Tim Piggott-Smith in Arthur Miller’s classic Death of a Salesman, a fresh new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma and the bawdy romp Nell Gwynn direct from its West End triumph. Those in search of a wonderful night out shouldn’t miss Mike Leigh’s cringe-inducing Abigail’s Party, the theatrical sensation The Play That Goes Wrong which is returning to us for a second week this year because the first week sold out so quickly, the next Peter James murder mystery Not Dead Enough or Edward Fox in Sand in the Sandwiches, his one-man tribute to John Betjeman. Opera and music lovers are in for a treat with English Touring Opera bringing us their wonderful Tosca and a new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience and the amazing all-male Sasha Regan Company will be blowing

the cobwebs off the G&S repertoire with their hilarious version of The Mikado. Those of you who know you want to see a musical, but aren’t sure which you want to see, should come to the Olivier Award winning Showstopper! The Improvised Musical. If you like your theatre to be more topical you will want to see James Bolam and Anne Reid in the hilarious Fracked!, and the National Theatre’s controversial new take on Brexit, My Country, will provoke furious debate. Our youngest theatrical aficionados will be flocking to see The Gruffalo in the flesh, hoping the good Witch will find Room on the Broom for them, worrying that they might turn out to have a relative like David Walliams’ Awful Auntie and willing the Fantastic Mr Fox on as he outwits the horrid farmers. In the days following the Brexit vote, a team from the National Theatre spoke to people nationwide, aged 9 to 97, to hear their views on the country we call home. In a series of deeply personal interviews, they heard opinions that were honest, emotional, funny, and sometimes extreme. My Country puts their words centre stage. Britannia calls a meeting, to listen to her people. Caledonia, Cymru, East Midlands, North East, Northern Ireland and the South West bring the voices of their regions. The debate is passionate, stereotypes nailed and opinions divided. Can there ever be a United Kingdom? These real testimonials are interwoven with speeches from party leaders of the time in this ground-breaking new play by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, and director Rufus Norris. Mon 12 – Sat 17 June A brand new play in the words of people across the UK and Carol Ann Duffy. Considering the fallout from Brexit, the words of the public, on all sides of the argument, are put into a dramatic space to allow those, who are often unheard, a voice. BOOKING FEE
All tickets for the Arts Theatre include a £3 per-ticket booking fee. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre. Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By charging a booking fee we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity. Tickets are not refundable unless a performance is cancelled. Exchanges and resales may be made under certain conditions; please contact the Box Office for details of our policy.

Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to most performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for over 65’s, groups and schools. Please note there are no discounts on the lowest price seats. Only one discount applies and all discounts are subject to availability. The Arts Theatre aims to care for every patron as an individual, on a one to one basis. There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 in Wheeler Street; 7 in King’s Parade and 36 in Grand Arcade car park. If you have mobility requirements, please advise the Box Office when booking tickets so we are able to allocate you the correct space. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building. We have four house wheelchairs available for use during all performances. We have a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system, designed to help DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING patrons both without hearing aids, and for those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are also able to provide headsets and personal induction loops. If you have never used one before, we recommend arriving at the Theatre early so that our Front of House staff can explain how they work. Some of our performances are BSL INTERPRETED. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
