welcome Welcome to our summer 2018 season. From the regal drama of Mary Stuart, the sensational Almeida and West End hit, to the riotous fun of Filter’s take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I hope we have been able to create a season that has something to offer everyone. It is important to all of us who work at the Arts Theatre that we cater for all of our audiences, from serious drama lovers and murder mystery addicts, comedy aficionados and young theatregoers, to longstanding supporters or new audience members. An Inspector Calls will continue to be many school students’ first taste of real theatre; Robert Powell and Liza Goddard will bring a new spin to Sherlock Holmes, delighting our longstanding audience; and Jonathan Pryce and Dame Eileen Atkins starring in Florian Zeller’s (who wrote The Father) family drama The Height of the Storm, immediately prior to its West End run, will wow our serious drama buffs. I hope you can all find something that will provide you with a truly memorable night at our Theatre. As ever, if you want any help selecting shows or want to know more about a production, please ring our helpful and knowledgeable Box Office staff. They all love theatre, and our Theatre in particular, and can tell you so much more than an online booking system! Our in-house producing efforts are continuing to bear fruit. The wonderful Pressure, written by and starring David Haig, which we co-produced with The Touring Consortium in February, has enjoyed a brilliant regional tour and will be transferring to the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End in June. Our production of 84 Charing Cross Road starring Stefanie Powers and Clive Francis, which did so well here in September 2016, will be embarking on a regional tour in May 2018 and making a triumphant return to us in June. In-house producing

will further improve the quality and mix of productions we can present at our Theatre and in the future could provide valuable future income to help ensure our long term sustainability. Please support us both here, on tour and in the West End. By the time you read this our new lift will be in service. Thank you to you all for being so understanding during the installation. You have all been kind and gracious about the lift and we have all lost weight from going up the six flights of stairs to our offices! Our new box office system is up and running and the implementation process was much less painful than we had feared. Thank you for all your forbearance and your helpful feedback. It is a huge improvement on our old system and provides us with a solid foundation for the future. We will be continuing to invest in the long-term success and sustainability of our Theatre over the coming years. As a registered charity we are able to reinvest any surpluses we make back into the Theatre rather than having to pay dividends to shareholders and I hope you approve of the results. Thank you as ever for all your support and friendly feedback and I hope to see you again soon at the Cambridge Arts Theatre. With my best wishes

Hollywood and Broadway legend, Stefanie Powers, returns to Cambridge to reprise her role as Helene Hanff in a major new UK tour of 84 Charing Cross Road, alongside Clive Francis as Frank Doel. Adapted from Helene Hanff’s best-selling book, 84 Charing Cross Road is a tender and heartwarming tale of transatlantic friendship. The bittersweet comedy is based on the extraordinary true story of the remarkable relationship that developed over 20 years between a vivacious New York writer and a London bookseller. Through their exchange of humorous and often intimate correspondence a snapshot of Britain from the post-war 1940’s to the swinging 60’s is revealed, alongside a touching human story that still deeply resonates today. Stefanie Powers plays Helene Hanff. A star of stage and screen with a career spanning over 50 years, Powers is best known for her iconic role opposite Robert Wagner in Hart to Hart, which ran over 5 series and 8 TV movies between 1979 and 1996. Her extensive film and TV credits include McLintock!, The Magnificent Seven Ride Again, The Rockford Files, The Bionic Woman, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. Clive Francis’ recent theatre credits include An Inspector Calls (West End), Les Blancs (National Theatre) and Enron; on screen he has appeared in The Queen, Mr Turner and most recently as Lord Salisbury in the award-winning Netflix series, The Crown. 84 Charing Cross Road premiered at the Salisbury Playhouse in 1981 before transferring to the West End and Broadway. It was adapted into a film in 1987, starring Anthony Hopkins, Judi Dench and Anne Bancroft as Helene, who won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress.

Christopher Hampton Jonathan Kent I M M E D I AT E LY P R I O R T O W E S T E N D André and Madeleine have been in love for over fifty years. This weekend, as their daughters visit, something feels unusual. A bunch of flowers arrives, but who sent them? A woman from the past turns up, but who is she? And why does André feel like he isn’t there at all? The Height of the Storm is a beautifully compelling family drama by Florian Zeller, ‘the most exciting playwright of our time’ (The Guardian). Starring two of the greatest actors of their generation on stage together for the first time, this major new play from the writer of Olivier Award-Winning The Father is a searing exploration of love, compassion and the fragility of life. Jonathan Pryce is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning actor of stage and screen. His varied work includes lauded performances in film including Brazil, Glengarry Glen Ross, Carrington and Evita and on stage in a landmark international tour of The Merchant of Venice, Comedians for which he received a Tony Award and Miss Saigon in the West End and on Broadway. He most recently appeared as the High Sparrow in the hugely successful Game of Thrones. Dame Eileen Atkins is a three-time Olivier award-winning actress. She is known for her BAFTA and Emmy award-winning performance in Cranford, as well as roles in film including Gosford Park, The Hours and Robin Hood. Her many stage appearances include Honour, Retreat from Moscow and Ellen Terry. She can be seen most recently as Queen Mary in Netflix’s The Crown.
